I read somewhere in this thread, Jung Ki purposesly lose 15kg for his role as Wang So. I saw him in Scholar Walk The Night. His face is more rounder.

dearies, LJG mentioned in one of his interviews that the director asked him to lose weight. And he did lose 33 lbs. I think one of the reason is because of his round face and him losing weight will make his jaw more prominent; thus, his profile is better onscreen. Notice his previous historical dramas, his face was rounder there but now his profile oncam is better. I think he is so thin, too, and i hope that he'll gain some weight since the drama ended already but i think he prefers his current weight now because he once said that he is maintaining it.

i know he lose weigh purposely for WS character and the director ask him too, because WS character need to be more sharp and dangerous like a wounded animal. some fans prefer him in his current shape since he looks more young etc, but i think i'm one of the few who prefer his body more fuller (?).. less than the previous one, but not as thin as this..

For those who asked whether last name of WY & WS's mother Queen Yoo (Yu, 劉) and the last name of the mother of WW's actual wife (Lady Yoo),  Queen Jeongdeok (Yu,  柳) are the same, THEY AREN'T.  Although Korean Hangul might sound the same, Hanja which came from Chinese characters are different as you can see.  As Mandarin has 4 tones, they sound similar but with different intonation. 

Also, Wikipedia (English) tag of Wang Eun (10th) and his wife are NOT correct (Reference 6 and 7 on that page).  They're confusing him with the son of 6th queen (Queen Jeongdeok), chief prince ( 元莊太子) who will establish his residence in Kaesong. Historically, one of his sister is married to WW (8th), another one is married to WJ (14th) and youngest one is married to another son of Taejo whose grandfather is one of 4 generals (Hongyu) who put WG on the throne. He is married to Princess Heungbang who is a sister of WY, WS and WJ and daughter of Queen Yoo. Historically, it wasn't mentioned whether WE got married before he died along with his grandfather's army.

So far, drama took the creative license for

(1) the birth order of princes as most of their birthdate except 1 to 4 were unknown. 

(2) Park Soon-duk, daughter of General Park Soo-kyung, is actually Taejo's 29th consort whose aunt (sister of General) was also a consort of Taejo. 

(3) wife of WW was not from Hae clan, but another daughter of Taejo from his 6th queen (Queen JeongDeok) 

(4) WS was not known to have scar in history but relatively good looking.

@outofspace @penelop3 It is definitely Baek Ah.  It is in one of the preview, both previews below have scenes where BA wore military attire. First link has exact scene you mentioned @ 0:37 and the second link has BA in military attire on horse next to WS @4:43. I'm pretty sure Baek Ah is trying to save Woo Hee.  

 

Just for curiosity, I have been checking number of Youku streaming every week. This week, MLSHR reached 1.35 billion and Friday alone was 770,000 hit. For Friday alone, it is very close to currently popular Chinese drama Zhu Xian which also released two episodes weekly (also on Mon & Tue) but free to watch for everyone in China. This week release MLSHR epi 10 & 11 are not free for non-VIP members (VIP members having to pay monthly).  I just hope that it'll reach up close to Kim Woo Bin and Suzy, Uncontrollably Fond, which was streamed on youku concurrently with SK and is currently still being watched on youku (3.54 billion). (I'm neither pro or con about UF as I haven't watched, so fans of UF, please DO NOT bash me )

I really wish we somehow get to know why WS was on the top of the city entrance fortress and how Crown Prince (WM) saved him. 

Although I should be studying for very important license exam, I could not control myself to say something about Queen Yoo. I know she is cruel and selfish and all the audiences hate her.  However, if I say that Queen Yoo is pitiful in a way and that all her brutality and scheming come from unrequited love from Taejo, will you all agree???

The reason I said this is because she still loves Taejo no matter how disappointed she is in him.  She even tried to stop his marriage by using her own son WS's life as well as mourning for her recently deceased eldest son (2nd prince).  She was trying to say against King marrying Hae Soo (not sure in which version).  She attacked Lady Oh who seemed to get King's heart as she is very resentful that she didn't get his.  People who want to win against someone in unethical ways are usually jealous and low self-esteemed (poison Lady Oh to have abortion, arrange someone from Damiwon to poison CP, argue Lady Oh that she won).  However, she never planned to hurt Taejo.  She planned to assassinate CP many times but did NOT plan to kill the king.  It was WY and his father-in-law (Park Young Ku)  are the ones working with Woo Hee.  WY knows about Woo Hee planned assassination attempt as a Gaesha (In preview, you can see when the king was stabbed by Woo Hee, WY smiled).  I really don't think that Queen Yoo knew about this plan though she also has connection with Park Young Ku.

Learning Korean might be useful for you when you visit them in SK

I improved my Mandarin (listening, speaking, reading) about 5-6 times by watching Chinese drama starting from 2011 (SH C-version was the initial culprit). I only attended chinese school during summer when I was in primary school and know third grade level of Taiwan primary school.  I only know Anya say yaw before I watched this drama and now my Korean phrases are increasing bit by bit

count me in!!!! LJG looks so sharp as WS and yeah he is dangerous with his tiny and sharp jaw face..but for me i always love my actors and LJG is one of them ofc look a bit meaty, meaty but healthy and have good body, meaty but still have abs and broad shoulder,,,i already enough to see skinny guy on kpop fandom,so i dont want to see skinny guys too on my kdrama fandom, its makes me want to feed them more and more..yeah that just my preference....added: but if they lose weight for a role in drama or movie then i must support them,its mean they are really dedication to their roles then,so two thumbs up for them..but for daily live just manhi meokeoooo...eat a lot and be meaty

yeah at least they must try to learn english too but we also must take a try too, learn their language too. If we love their dramas so it can be motivate us to learn their language right???im still learning too until today...i learn just by watching drama and variety show , listening music,i never spare my time irl to learn it in class or anything,,,though maybe its slow to learn by myself but its still fun learning by myself (and google help sometimes),,and this thread,this forum also makes me learn many things about SK especially their history and a bit of their language too..FIGHTING!!!!!

For me it is a good thing that he betrayed her before he destroyed her. Well, he almost did, didn't he? She was going to entrust her future to him and we saw all too clearly that the trust was unwarranted.  To me what's tragic is not that he betrayed her but that she didn't wake up to what kind of man he was until it was too late. Until someone had to die.

Which leads me yet to another glorious theme in this show... that of appearance and reality. If Uk hadn't been played by an extremely good-looking, accomplished actor like KHN, do you think people would have been as enamoured with the character? I doubt it. That's entirely the point. Looks are deceiving but in world where appearances are everything, people are conned into thinking that what they see externally can tell you a what the heart of a person is like. This is such a key part of what the drama is. Su and Uk "looked" good together. Their chemistry seemed off the charts, the skinship pushed all the right buttons and really KHN is so swoonworthy when he cracks a smile that no one could really hate him. But a relationship who's only strength is based on external beauty can't go the distance.

On the other side, So wears a mask and fearsome reputation because that world is utterly cruel to people with externally visible deficiencies. Rumours abound about him based on half-truths. The guy knows all about cruelty that humanity is capable of. He's experienced it all... from family to being a hostage in Sinju.

The palace seems like nice place for a 21st century optimist to hang out and make friends but in reality, it is toxic. Her naivete about the people and the place had to go through a paradigm shift of seismic proportions to set the stage for a much more challenging phase in her life. All the happy clappy stuff just couldn't last.

There has been a lot of criticism of the writer for taking too long for the Su-Uk romance here and elsewhere. However, I would argue that the longer we saw them together (contrasted too with her time spent with So), the more is obvious that there was something rotten in Denmark. Uk's hyperbolic promises and his inability to deliver on any promise was symptomatic of a larger issue and in ensuing episodes we saw explicitly what it was. But it seems that the writer wanted to bring in all these themes together in Ep.11 in one devastating fell swoop. That's why everyone generally agrees that 11 is the best episode because it is culmination of all the threads we saw being woven into this entire tapestry.

For me, it was clear that the writer intented to use Wang Wook's good looks and manners to create an illusion. I never thought that the romance between Hae Soo and Wang Wook took too long because at the same time we could see Hae Soo and Wang So becoming closer in each episode. Striking is that each scene between Wang So and Hae Soo corresponded to a scene between Wang Wook and Hae Soo. They were each time similar but revealed the difference in the nature of their relationship. For example, Wang So's hug in the episode 9 is full of joy and happiness, although Hae Soo doesn't come to appreciate it. The way they hug Hae Soo is totally different. 

Wang Wook is hugging her first halfhearted as he only uses one arm. Only after declaring his love, he hugges her entirely. Yet, his eyes are full of tears. He has jus promised her again to walk in the snow again too, another one he will break. On the other hand, Wang So's hug is the total opposite. He is so quick that Hae Soo is already in his arms before she protests. He is smiling and happy, unaware that she is feeling the total opposite. So the hug with Wang Wook is a way to make sure that she keeps loving him, while Wang So wants to express his happiness and his gratitude for her action. Interesting is that when Wang Wook was in the cavern with her and proposed to her, he noticed Hae Soo's hesitation. Therefore he added by asking if she had any doubts about him. His question illustrates that he is well aware that anyone would have started doubting him after the number of promises he couldn't keep. 

As conclusion, the writer's work is very good as the scenes are always used to draw parallels between wang Wook and Wang So so that people will realise the difference in their personality and behaviour!!  

Now, I would like to comment on the expression "toxic" you used. For many days the topic poison had been on my mind, but I wanted to write about it later. Yet, your comment pushed me to do it now. In this drama, poison appears so often and in different kind of forms. We have the poisoned tea that Hae Soo served to Wang So and the one that lady Oh drank so that she had miscarriage. Both are represented by a liquid poison. Yet, poison appears in form of words, like lies, rumours or poisonous influence too. Third the palace itself like you mentioned it, can be considered as a poison, where people start suffering from that toxic place. Lady Oh suffers from cancer, Wang Mu has skin disease and Hwangbo suffers from migraine. all of them are victims of the toxic environnement. The palace kills people slowly, little by little. We all know that exposed daily with little dosis of poison can be dangerous and fatal. Finally, poison is also represented in symbols like sun or rain. 

Striking is that poison appears in the first episode for the first time. Wang Mu's breakfast had been poisoned so that a bird died. Its first appearance so early underlines the importance of the existence of poison in Goryeo's world. Then Wang Wook mentions it in the episode 7 related to a plant:

. As we can see, this plant can either heal or kill. I did some research and found out that this plant is used for the heart. In order to become a poison, the quantity is the determinator. Too much of it can kill. The mentioning of this plant is interesting for many reasons:

1) It reminds us that the palace is a dangerous place because we can't help connecting it to the event in the episode 1, where Wang Mu's breakfast had been poisoned. 

2) Since the plant is connected to heart, it can be related to love and its negative impact. This could be considered as a clue for the future betrayal: Hae Soo will be devastated and heartbroken that Wang Wook abandoned her. This will definitely weaken her health too. 

3) Hae Soo hears for the first time about poison, unaware that she will become a victim of a poisoning. She doesn't realise the importance of poison in Goryeo.

Secondly, poison is connected with words. It is also used in the beginning. People are fearing Wang So due to rumours: he killed so many people in Shinju. This kind of rumours are the reason why Wang So is isolated and seen as a wolf dog. Many stories have been told about him, reality disformed so that Wang So has to live as an outcast. Even his own brothers don't know what is true and wrong. The result is that Wang So's isolation makes him suffer. He would like to get loved by his family, yet it is not possible. After Hae Soo met him, his relationship with his brothers change because since Hae Soo symbolises water, she can tamper the effect of the "poisonous" rumors. Baek Ah starts seeing Wang So's true personality. It is as if Hae Soo was diluating the poison as she represents water. But rumours are different from lies. Lies can be as dangerous as poison. One of the best examples is when Wang Won visit his brother Wang Mu in order to make him believe that Wang So knew about the corruption in Mu's family. Wang Won didn't lie just once, but the entire conversation only consisted of lies.

The effect is immediate and effective like poison: Wang Mu's trust in Wang So is shaken. He starts doubting his brother who had once put his life for him. Then another kind of poison are words as such. They are distinctive from rumors and lies because the two latter are more based on fiction. Lies don't correspond to reality, rumours represent a mixture of reality and fiction and words can be a reflection of reality. I could use Yoo for example who is using her son to become the Queen Dowager. She is not lying to Yo as she doesn't need to do it. She really thinks that her son deserves to be King and Yo has internalised her way of thinking. Her obedient son is expecting from her love and devotion if he executes her orders. Yo believes every words she says. So she has a huge influence on him therefore he looks down on all the other princes. His mother's words and influence have such a negative impact that he is arrogant, cruel and coldhearted like his mother. As we can observe, words can be poisonous so that they affect relationships. The best scene where the viewers witness the poisonous effect of words is when Yeon Hwa is with her brother. We have two scenes for that. The first scene is when she meets her brother after the rain ritual.

She is reminding him that the seat should have been his. Wang Wook is not looking at her, but her words have such an impact on him. First he refuses to listen to her, but her poisonous thoughts are effective because we see his struggling since he is convincing himself that he shouldn't be greedy. He knows that this is not right. In the end, he succumbs to the temptation as he is asking himself where he should stand.

Yeon Hwa's words and influence have worked like a poison, He gives in to his greed and ambition. Actually, Yeon Hwa's actions and words remind me a lot of a snake and the Bible story of Adam and the snake. The best scene where we can associate her to the poisonous snake is when her secret is discovered. When she is caught, she almost immediately talks Wang Wook into not giving up the throne. She tries to convince him that he always wanted to become the king. She is like the real devil as if she had seen his inner thoughts and desire and this is not a coincidence.

Now, we might wonder if Wang Wook's ambition and greed is the result of Yeon Hwa's influence. This makes ask ourselves if he has not been brainwashed by his sister, getting poisoned listening to her words that this seat should belong to him, just like Yo has been influenced by his own mother. In one of my earlier comments, I had written that Yeon Hwa was the Yoo in the making and here again, we see that both are working in a similar way. Using people's feelings in order to get what they want. In fact, it is Hyeon Hwa who is ambitious and greedy, but she is using her own brother to achieve her goal. Moreover, she would like to shine like a sun, exactly like Queen Yoo.

And we all know that sun can be dangerous as well. Too much sun can kill. And this is also represented by Wang So and Hae Soo. The latter will love Wang So so deeply that being close to him will make her suffer and weaken her health. At some point, Wang So will realise it therefore he will allow her to leave him. That's why I also noticed a difference between the episode 8 and 9. In the episode 8, Wang So was sure, he would never let her go, but in the episode 9, his determination is less stronger due to the afflicted pain. This time, he doesn't say, he will never let her, but  So the possibility that he let her go is now a little higher.

Finally, the rain as poison can be observed when Hae Soo is begging for lady Oh's life. Hae Soo is already so weak, rain is making her even sicker. This explains why Hae Soo will be physically weaker in the future.

@flower4junsu Yeah, Nicky Wu (4th in C-version) was interested in Cecilia Liu (Ruoxi) but at that time she was attached (wasn't sure who was her bf at that time though she dated one staff of her agency Tangren for ~3-4 years when she started acting). Nicky mentioned at a talk show that he met a nice girl during one drama shooting and fans speculated that it was Cecilia as it coincided with finishing SH. Later, Cecilia was rumored to be dating Ming Dao [another Taiwanese actor who she co-starred "Angel Happiness" with in 2011 Oct (the drama wasn't aired/ banned because it contains HIV related issues) ]. Since you mentioned actors' romance, do u know LJK ever dated???  I know this forum has a lot of Jun Ki's fans and that he only acted feminine/  high-end male prostitute in one movie (King's clown)  but does anyone heard of whether he is gay??? I'm not his fans or fans of any other Korean actors yet (I saw him in 2 weeks and thought pretty good acting macho criminal).  So, please please please do NOT egg me! I remember when HS was doing Lady Hae's makeup she talked about her life as Hae Jin and she mentioned how she didn't get to say anything to the two that betrayed her. I'm waiting for HS to change and in the scene from the preview where WW visits her at washing area I really want her to say something to him...

The reason I said this is because she still loves Taejo no matter how disappointed she is in him.  She even tried to stop his marriage by using her own son WS's life as well as her recently deceased eldest son (2nd prince).  She was trying to say against King marrying Hae Soo (not sure in which version).  She attacked Lady Oh who seemed to get King's heart as she is very resentful that she didn't get his.  People who want to win against someone in unethical ways are usually jealous and low self-esteemed (poison Lady Oh to have abortion, arrange someone from Damiwon to poison CP, argue Lady Oh that she won).  However, she never planned to hurt Taejo.  She planned to assassinate CP many times but did NOT plan to kill the king.  It was Yoo and his father-in-law (Park Young Ku)  are the ones working with Woo Hee.  Yoo knows about Woo Hee planned assassination attempt as a Gaesha (You can see he smiled when the king was stabbed by Woo Hee, he smiled).  I really don't think that Queen Yoo knew about this though she also has connection with Park Young Ku.

I agree with your point saying that Queen Yoo may be doing all of this because of disappointment that has been fostered becomes anguish and led her being so ambitious to make one of her children (which is Yo, someone that she can control) to ascend to the throne. She cannot win Taejo's heart (she knows it very well, Taejo's heart is forever being Lady Oh's possession), thus she needs to win the throne by herself because she had already sacrificed enough of her being Taejo's wife: she wasn't his first Queen and she needs to share her man to others. Deep down we know it is every single woman wish to keep her man by herself, even Hae Soo thinks the same. Thus, she wants the throne so bad so that the others would only look at her, not like her man who cannot look only at her. She poisoned Lady Oh because she knows that if Lady Oh's child born, Taejo would favor that child so much that it may interfere her. 

However from what I remembered, Queen Yoo tried to stop the marriage not because of jealousy, rather to be in disbelief on how Taejo have no heart for their dead child at all, and also for her, by directly marrying someone else when she was at her lowest-state (Queen Yoo, Wang Mu, and So were still wearing the white robe, so it seems the marriage was held on the same day when they cremated So's brother). Taejo always using the same excuses that he did this/that to protect the nation. This is why I quite despise some of Taejo's decisions. When things urgent came to him, he seemed to be lack of knowledge to solve the problem as the King.

Back to Queen Yoo, maybe at that time, what Queen Yoo needs the most was a comfort from Taejo. They just lost their child, at least Taejo should respect her. But she didn't get any of it, which I think that was the time Queen Yoo lost herself in dark side. She is no more a good mother (seeing So still respected her so much even after his family abandon him as a hostage to the Shinju, means that before Queen Yoo created scar on So's face, both had a good relationship as a mom and son. So never blames her for the scar. He blames the scar that made Queen Yoo acted that way to him.) but a scary woman who wants the power. I swear to God that every time she sees Wang So, she must be remembered what made her being so far like this, only her heart is already been washed out to be filled in with greed that makes her can't see clearly.
