When the bell tolled for Oh Sanggung, it marked several endings and beginnings. 

1. The end of Oh Sanggung's tragic life

2. The end of her love for Taejo. She could finally throw him away.

3. The end of innocence and naivety for Hae Soo

4. The end of Hae Soo's first love 

5. The beginning of a struggle to the throne between So and Wook

6. The beginning of regret for Wook that will haunt him till death

7. The beginning of So-Soo's epic love story that transcends time and space

8. The beginning of a stronger Soo to survive in the palace with So, Baek Ah and Jung by her side. 

Ep 11 is not an episode that one can re watch easily. An episode laden with so much wretched sadness and realisation. It is no wonder that the director is famous for melodrama - the death scenes are indeed all very well done.

Is anybody else worried about HS becoming like Lady Oh after WS becomes king?  I keep thinking about that scene where Lady Oh tells HS not to end up like her and I hope it's not foreshadowing.

We know from history that Gwangjong marries YH, and assuming the writers stick to that then it doesn't look like he will also marry HS.  HS may always be in his heart, but will that be enough?  While it seems that WS truly wants to marry her now, we all know what power and palace politics can do to promises of love.  Even Taejo seemed to love Lady Oh more deeply than any other woman, but it didn't compel him to marry her once he became king.  Another example is Wook, who also placed duty above his affections for HS.  While WS is vastly different to either Wook or Taejo, what compromises will he have to make in order to hold onto the throne?  The story doesn't look rosy for HS anyways, considering the history, the novel, and the Chinese version on which it is based.  

But then of course we don't have a clear idea of how realistic the writers intended the story to be.  Much also depends on how closely they followed the original Chinese version.  Is it likely that the writers didn't want to divert too much from history since that might be unpopular to Korean viewers?  

Whatever the case, I would like to believe that HS and WS's love will overcome in the end.  But I highly doubt it will happen in Goryeo.

I feel as though every episode of this show is better than the one before it and that's so great. This episode packed such a great emotional punch for all the characters and the acting was excellent. 

Lady Oh was the undisputed change agent of this episode. In episode 10 she warned Hae Soo about Wook it didn't seem as dire as it did today, she said something along the lines of "if one of them changes their mind you will die" and that came so close to happening today. Her essentially calling out Wook for being cowardly in his love for Soo was such a great moment. In a way much like So she considers Soo to be her person, her surrogate child so it probably pained her to watch Soo make the same mistakes with Wook that she made with the king, knowing that no matter how much Wook claimed to love her he wanted the power of the throne more than he wanted to protect her. I wonder what would have happened had Wook taken her advice and gone to the king and told him that he loved Soo and that he wanted him to spare her life based on that. The conversation between Lady Oh and the King was so sad her pulling out tha single item of baby clothing had me in tears, when she proclaimed Soo her daughter and used her final wish to ask for the king to not let evil queen take another one of her children from her. 

Oh Sangoong made such a great sacrifice to protect Hae Soo in the cave when she touches Soo's scar and repeats Soo's own lines back to her "I protected what I wanted to protect and now I must pay for it", I was sobbing. How lucky is Soo, to have two people who would protect her with their lives, who love her enough to ease her heart and mind by denying what she knows to be true. She also got her wish she will be remembered by not just one person but by many. So's face when he realized that she was taking the blame for something that he believed his mother had done to protect Soo indicates that he will remember her too. Woo Hee Jin was excellent in all scenes from being Soo's loving surrogate mother, to her defiance in the face of the evil queen's gloating. I do have to agree with her though I hope that evil queen Yoo lives a long lonely miserable life, I hope that she witnesses the purging of her clan by the son that she so cruelly threw away. Someone should tell SMS that stopping someone to gloat about winning means that you haven't won. 

I can appreciate that Wook is letting Soo go because he realizes that he can't have both her and his family/the throne, but did he really have to show up at her kneeling protest only to stop and walk away? No matter how I look at it, that was such a cruel thing to do. Soo had been waiting for him because he said that he was going to investigate to get the proof that was needed to free her, she was looking for him as she walked to the stockade, she had to stop herself from asking Baek Ah about him when he came to tell her to give up her kneeling protest, yet he shows up only to turn around and walk away without a word. It would have been better if he hadn't shown up at all. That said it was a great moment visually So standing protecting Soo from the rain, Wook with his back turned to them walking away, and Soo pulling herself together and gaining the strength to kneel in an upright position after having her faith in him shattered. 

Wang So stumbling down the hall to go to Soo because she was alone is such a great moment. One of the overarching beliefs about So is that he's a ruthless killer with no feelings but these two episodes proved differently, when he loves he loves hard and he will do anything to protect the people he loves. The conversation between Soo and So when he visits her while she is imprisoned was so layered and a great reminder of what I love about their relationship. On the surface it was very light but under the surface of the joking words was real worry that was also quite visible in both of their eyes. His conversation with Taejo was so indicative about the kind of leader that So would be while he's asking him to spare Soo's life Taejo makes an offhand comment about thinking that So was "a well-forged sword" and So replied that "the owner must be just to wield the sword properly" that line should come into play during Gwanjong's reign. 

A couple of moments this episode made me smh, Wook essentially accusing So of being the reason that Soo is in the position that she was in when in reality, he was the reason. YH orchestrating this entire thing because she wants Wook to be king so that they will never have to be fearful of the evil queen again yet her mom ended up on her knees begging evil queen to spare her children. 

Kinda side eyeing Wook for deriding So for wanting to marry a "maid", he can be jealous all he wants but he should not forget that he essentially threw Hae Soo away today, so while he may be jealous he has no one to blame but himself for not being the man in her life. This may sound mean but I hope that he has to suffer watching Soo fall in love with So and seeing their relationship and affection play out in front of him, breaking up with a girl and then getting mad/jealous when she moves on is so infuriating. It's not like he didn't know, Oh Sangoong warned him that he would regret turning his back on her.

I believe that Wook is a reflection of Taejo... atleast in most of the aspects... the same throwing people under the bus for greater good... sam justification of pathetic actions as sacrifice... same waiting for his chance behind the scenes.... basically he is Taejo 2.0

Common people will be as powerless under his reign as they were under Taejo....

Whereas So is everything that Wook is not.... Passionate, Driven and Dynamic.... he is by no means a saint... but he doesnt care for manipulations and waiting game.... he is straightforward , go Get It kinda guy.... when he makes a objective for  himself whether it is strengthening Goryeo by weakening the Noble clans strength.... or strengthening common people by providing opportunities for them to join the government.... he can do everything with a single minded devotion... without caring to making excuses for his means to achieve that end....

Toi summarize Gwangjong was the King Goryeo needed and not Wook.. just like So was the person Doo needed and not Wook..... 

Oh @sukbin I'm still laughing at don't begrudge Wook, Ok I won't, I'll just throw stones at him the very stones that was thrown at WS, but getting back to the choice who would make a better King.. I choose WS and need I say more, WW can't ptrotect himself his family or his women now how will he protect a country he's to passive to be King always over analysing everything he likes to make simple complicated.. With him as King if they went to war he would be to busy thinking while soliders be knocking at the palace door..

@ratgirlina  I think WW could have saved HS had he told on his sister if he spoke privately with the King not only the King would have no choice but to spare YH life but the Queen also would need to be spared he couldn't punish one without punishing the other so in my opinion he miss the opportunity again to change the outcome of the situation.. He let YH flip the script on him, He should have known his sister wouldn't take such drastic measures if the Queen wasn't involved..

In episode last night, we saw a brief scene with Chaeryung crying asking Wook to help Soo. It's been a while we not seeing Chaeryung. I wonder how or when will she back to Hae Soo. What will happen that can make her back with Hae Soo again. I love those duo.

Oh...I have just watched Ep 11.  I have no words atm.  I cried - I haven't cried while watching a drama for a long time and I think only twice - Damo and Chuno.  All the acting was amazing and I thought IU's crying scenes were very real and of course Lee Joon Gi - what can I say really that you don't already know.  I won't comment on anything else - I need to watch it again and again to take it all in.

I haven't read any of your comments yet cos I wanted to watch the Episode first and I see you are now 42 pages ahead of me haha.  It's becoming a lost cause.

I wanted to discuss a few points regarding some of the best scenes Yesterday:

It was testimony to the heartfelt care that Soo has for So when she is not worried about what happens to her but instead just asks So not to run around in his injured state,she asks him take rest and not to come over to the prison to visit her... since that might cause physical discomfort to him....

Though she is not in 'Love' with him yet in the Romantic sense of word.... (thats in my opinion only... dont take offense if yours differs) ...she cares about him from the depth of her Heart... with Wook she has the preconcieved notion of Love and Romance but with So she connects at a primal level... when it comes to protecting So... she surprises everyone with her passion and fierceness...
This was what made So imprint on her to the extent that he submits to her completely Mind,Body and Soul....

The Rain sequence when she sees Wook and her face lights up... only to stare in shock to see him hesitate and then turn his back on her.... she slumps down losing strength both physically and mentally.... she is all alone with no hope... then come the silent footsteps that stop beside her and a slight wave of a cloak protecting her from the stinging rain...and she is not alone anymore.. she knows who it is...  and she accepts his protection... she takes strength in that thought and straightens up engulfing herself completely in his care and protection... THIS !!! This is the moment that Wook lost Soo and SO gained Soo.... !!!!

The gallows sequence when Soo is taken to be hanged, So charged at the soldiers like a True Wolf protecting its mate.. in his case his soulmate... he knew no fear... he had already prepared to Die if thats what it takes in protecting Soo... the madness in his face... complete abandoning of fear and reason... burning with pure determination... thats what SO's love is all about... pure,innocent and allconsuming....Wook was sadly never built for such kind of love... if he had... he would have found a way out even with responsibilities on his head.... as the saying goes where there is a will there is a way....

Review Ep 11

WELL… Episode 11 hit me real hard. 

So leaves and walks after Hae Soo but before he can even reach her the poison has done too much damage. He reaches out his hand and a shower of blood flies out of his mouth. Soo runs to him cradling him in her arms and frantically asks what is wrong. He tells her to be quiet and to run. Even in his dying state he is only thinking about her. And on a side note WTF Soo is screaming so loudly yet no one can hear her where the f*** is everyone in the palace my gosh. Also LJK better win some awards for his amazing performance cause he is just INCREDIBLE.

Then we have pretentious Yeon Hwa who wants to make a request by making 3 drinks. I apologise for when I said in the live streaming that she drank the tea because she didn’t. Sorry for the false information! She requests for the King to approve any marriage for Wook. She has good intentions I guess just with really horrible methods. Also where is she pouring the tea? Down her sleeve? Anyways strong move Yeon Hwa strong me. Since she didn’t drink it she probably bit her tongue or the inside of her mouth to cause the bleeding. She’s got balls. Also Queen Yoo is the first to say that she drank poison. I mean yes it is one of the most possible reasons but her yelling it out first is quite suspicious why did no one pick it up SMH.

Yeon Hwa evilness is driven by great desire. We think Queen Yoo is bad and yes we feel that way cause all her plotting and scheming is shown to us but Yeon Hwa keeps whatever she does under the wraps. She is younger, meaner, smarter and more vengeful than Queen Yoo. She has a much greater drive and this is what makes her so dangerous. Queen Yoo better watch out cause I’m sure Yeon Hwa has set a target on that lady’s back.

I’m just glad the Baek Ah’s initial instincts once he found out the tea was poisoned was to run to see So. That bromance and loyalty is just YESSSSS!! #GOALS

Wook goes to visit Soo and grabs her hand. The very first thing she asks him is if So is okay. Look does not seem happy by her asking that and is also taken aback that she is more worried about him than about herself. He immediately let’s go of her.

“You may be tortured. Soo, you must survive.”

Ummmmm….hold up a minute.WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY?!?!? I cannot even with what he asked of her. 

“I will get you out of there.” 

Wook I’m not sure if anyone has ever told you don’t make promises you can keep because if I got a dollar for every time you broke a promise I would probably be rich enough to build a time machine and go to where you are and slap you.

The scene between the Crown Prince and the King was yet another sad scene of the episode. The Crown Prince does not wish for Soo to be the scapegoat of what happened and requests that her life be spared and his to be thrown away. We find out why the King is so insistent on keeping Mu safe and making him the next King. The fatherly love he possesses for the Mu is very strong and Mu cannot argue against him.

When So struggles over to see Hae Soo he is still very weak from the poison and Baek Ah tells him to stop as he is risking his own life. So’s response is that she is all alone. OTL! So knows exactly what it’s like to be alone and does not want the same for Soo. The OTP is just doing too many things to my heart.

“I should not have let Hae Soo get mixed with you.” Excuse you Wook. Last time I checked she got mixed into all this drama because she was related to you. Hmmmmm….

“I will find evidence.” Yup and do nothing with it.

 

Scene between So and Soo I have talked about here.

Wook has finally gotten a lead of who the actual suspect for the tea poisoning incident is. But when he finds out it is his sister he is in shock and does not know what to do. If he were to expose her his whole family would become traitors and yes he is in a very difficult situation so him not taking action is fair enough. His family is obviously his weak spot and really important to him. 

Yeon Hwa exposes him and his true hidden desires for the throne. She knows him better than he knows himself. I guess siblings have that weird connection and vibe about each other. He throws his hair pin into the maids back to ensure that his sister does not get framed. Man that throw was no chill he just went straight for it like an animal hunting for his prey. Much like when he threw the knife at the assassin at the end of Ep 2. Wook has a talent in throwing things and killing people. Interesting.

I am very confused as to whether I still like you at this point Wook. Wook has cut his sibling ties with Yeon Hwa and states that they are two people who are indebted to each other. His world is getting more complex by the second.

Because he could not fulfil his promise that he will get Soo out of her prison cell he is unable to face her. The pain and turmoil in his face says it all. He is full of regret and remorse that he has not been able to do anything for her, YET AGAIN.

Scenes with Lady Oh I have talked about in my character analysis and recap of her here.

Even as Soo was getting lead to her death she was thinking of Wook. "What about the 8th Prince?"  Till the end she was looking for him hoping he would show up but it was So who came to save her. It was So who tried to negotiate with the King to set her free. It was all So but Soo's image of Wook was so perfect that she could not see past him.

Protecting their children that’s what mother’s do. 

Queen Hwangbo gets down on her knees and begs for Queen Yoo to spare her children. Wook and Yeon Hwa watch in disbelief as their mother who like Queen Yoo is the wife of the King stoop this low because of the “crimes” of their past.

Crimes which Queen Yoo committed herself but because of where she stands could not be convicted. Yeon Hwa is well aware of this and her hatred for Queen Yoo seems to be heightened after seeing her mother in this state. It is Wook who has finally come to realise the reality of what it’s like being the lower class in the Palace. This I believe is what ultimately begins the transition of Wook’s goals.

OKAY HERE WE GO. I WENT FULL RAGE MODE WHEN I SAW THIS DURING THE LIFESTREAM YESTERDAY.

Wook appears in the rain and walks towards Soo who sees him and a small smile appears on her face. But he stops in his tracks and starts to back away. WTF DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!?!?!?! Okay lemme explain myself as I know not everyone will agree with me. Wook has a family which he needs to protect and yes that is completely understandable. There are more factors to deal with in his equation. If he knew he was going to do that he should NOT HAVE GONE AT ALL. He created false hope for her. He basically was like here you go oh wait sorry lemme take that away from you now. That's what did it for me.  OMG blood was boiling and face was covered in tears I just couldn't forgive him again. It was the final straw.

 

"Why?"

The disbelief and utter defeat in Soo's eyes when she realised what was happening was so excruciating.

Remember what Lady Oh told you Soo. Remember. 

But it's okay cause her dark horse came and stood by her side. He has been by her side everytime she has needed him. He has protected her and fought for her yet because she believed that he was the one to change and not Wook she distanced herself away from him. I hope that she finally realises who will change and who wouldn't. So has protected you all this time and you love him stop fighting what your heart is telling you Soo or you'll end up like Wook.

Episode 11 had me in tears like 90% of the time. It was an amazing episode and a great end to the first phase. The acting was on point and like I have mentioned previously only good actors can make me hate them. I am a huge fan of KHN and he is the sweetest cutest puppy ever but man is Wook pissing me off.  HAHAHA. Also I am glad they didn't show the torture scenes cause I really can't watch stuff like that so thank you director-nim!!  More importantly, WHERE THE HELL WAS EUN?!?!?!? Like did he disappear? Did the director forget about him? I miss him he's so adorable hoping to see him next week!

With all the heart wrenching moments this week I dare say I am happy to wait for the next episodes. My heart cannot handle anymore for a while cause these 2 episodes really tugged at my heartstrings. I am still beyond excited for the next week's episodes. The political showdown is going to happen and the bloody battle between brothers will take place. I hope Soo stays safe but it will be difficult as she is being sent to a place where no one can protect her. She's a strong girl and I think these chain of events will have strengthened her but Wook turning his back on her will effect her emotionally. But we all know So can fix that. Woo Hee's character will develop and I am excited to see what is in store from her. I feel like the preview is edited in such a way to make us think she killed the King but who knows... Let Baek Ah and her love story bloom PLEASE. 

The adorable kiss scene and "I missed you" scene is also coming!

Just finished watching ep 11. It's weird that throughout the whole seriesI only wait for scenes of  So  and almost skip some of Wook  because he is potrayed as such a goody two shoes in the first few eps and full of emty promises in the later. But in ep 11 , I actually feel sympathy for Wook . He has to choose between his family and Soo contrary to So who for long has already lost his bond with his family.(suddenly this becomes a good thing for So hehe) .He almost, i think, went out to help Haesoo in the rain and maybe just maybe by seeing Soo suffering like that Wook would actuallly change his mind and call out the name of the real culprit. But his family stood in the way , especially seeing his mom had to kneel to Queen Yo like that and with the personality of the family man like Wook, of course he couldn't turn away. The anger was boiling in him to have power to protect his famiy and his love .Some say that he could at least shelter  for Soo from the rain like So did but i dont think he can't bear the guilt  of knowing exactly how to stop Soo's suffering but have to turn a blind eye and seeing her suffering like that. Turn his back on her and walk away like that is painful but probably not as much as being useless next to her. Both options are indeed dead end for Wook .I never see Wook's desire for the throne is for his own but  for the one he loves. YH did said that he always has this deep-running desire for the throne but even before the poisioning event happened he almost asked the king to marry Soo and stayed away from the palace. He turns dark because of being pushed to dead end

No matter how twisted and dark the story ahead is waiting for us, the epic love between So and Soo has officially begun. Hooray
