Now I'm curious how many takes did they do to get the kiss right...I saw one BTS picture where Lee Junki's hand position is different from the actual scene. In the scene, Lee Junki's hands are cupping IU's face, while in the BTS pic, his hands are gripping her arms.

Was it intended that HS would take over 13th prince's relationship and scenes with the 4th prince?

In the Chinese drama, we see many scenes that show that the 4th and 13th prince were best friends that were changed to show WS and HS's friendship instead. The 13th prince was the only one who knew about 4th prince's hiding spot and he was the one who told Ruoxi to look for the 4th prince in the pond. And when Ruoxi asked the 4th prince who else has he told about his desire to become king, the 4th prince said he's only told her, but 13th prince knew too without him having to saying anything because he knows him so well. 

Which makes me think, is HS going to confess a crime she didn't do in order to save WS and that's why she's demoted where she's wearing the white and red outfit?

It is obvious the directed favors KHN & IU (WW & HS) more, he expresses his favoritism in his comments in the interviews as well. He even said IU was a genius in acting (which makes IU uncomfortable because Knetz are putting all the blame on her, poor girl).

(Other directors can make the screen seem fuller with fewer resources.) Also, he openly expressed how he wants all the princes to get on the hallyu ride (especially KHN), and people think that's why so many So-centric scenes were cut from the international version. 

Unfortunately, the director had more authority in this production (the writer isn't well known) and he changed many things. This is why Korean fans are mad at him, because we know from the early leaked synopsis and scripts as well as the 6-minute preview and actors' interviews that many things were skipped or altered to highlight the Wook-Soo relationship. 

So yeah, the current biggest fear on DC about next week is that we may not see much of So once he drinks the poisoned tea.

from your explaination, the director had weird ideas and experimenting a lot in this project, that's why the SK viewers reacted badly. I have read the same in LJG's thread, the director actually had no experience in sageuk but his previous dramas are all melodrama. He really put this project at risk. The writer for this drama is not well known as well, I checked she didn't have any experience in writing sageuk as well. But I don't want to blame the writer, because sounds like the decision was with the director. And the editing problem, I believe they rushed the international versions because the Chinese authority needs to inspect it before it airs. 

So he really likes KHN & IU, I hope they can make a melodrama together in the future, it will be great, people will be happy. However to put new experiments on this drama project itself is very risky, specially for big budget and pre-produced. I don't speak korean/sageuk language, so for us, international viewers, it doesn't matter. But for korean people, I'm sure they will react to it.  And they complain about LJG screen time, that's why now the production team try to put more LJG on screen (therefore we are stuck with 2 versions...but now I get used to it, no complains.. lets put more LJG on our screen!)

Anyway, let's be positive, I hope this drama will get better ratings in SK, at least min 10-12% towards the end. It already has good reviews in China, Singapore & Malaysia and I'm sure in other countries as well. The story is good, and all the actors already worked very hard for this. LJG has lost 15 kgs for this drama for godsake  he's really amazing in this drama, so please keep supporting this drama and enjoy it until the end

I think she always saw Wang So as he was. But then she saw another side to him and grew to really like the other side, while momentarily forgetting the other side. (I think we "the viewers" did too) Neither aspect is more true of him than the other -- savage hunter and wounded soul. You and I know that people in general aren't that straightforward. The categories of "good" and "bad" are often impossible to pin down. At the end of the day Su needs is to commit herself to that duality, which humanly speaking is hard... which is why the writer has taken her time to be brutally honest about the nature of their dynamic. It is raw, intense and overwhelming. The guy has a lot of baggage (clearly noted by Lady O) which was poignantly represented by that kiss-that-shall-not-be-named. Su will have to crawl on shattered glass to be with him and she has to go into this with her eyes wide open. Perhaps the visions are really about her having to make that choice of walking the dark road with him more than anything else.

However, it's not one-sided. Because he is an all or nothing guy, he will crawl on glass for her too. There is no one else for him so he is completely and utterly invested in her. That's why I said a couple of weeks ago that things will get a lot harder for them before they get to enjoy the fruits of their pairing. Sadly it will probably never get easier within the confines of palace politics but there will be moments that the world will come to a standstill for them.

I agree with you. From my opinion, Hae Soo has always been like that: an optimistic person who sees people through rose-coloured glasses. In reality, she is only oblivious of the bad sides of people or better said, she wants to be oblivious of the negative sides. That's why her boyfriend and her friend abused her kindness. Both betrayed her many times: the debts, the cheating and the make-up she did for her friend. The latter used Hae Soo's skills in order to become more attractive and seduce Hae Soo's boyfriend. Furthermore she must have agreed to sign a contract for her boyfriend and she never questioned him. She wasn't even married to the boyfriend. So she never doubted them because she didn't want to. 

The question is : why is she acting like that? From my understanding, she wants to see people through rose-coloured glasses for two reasons:

1) She is doing it on purpose, believing that if so, she will never be hurt. In the end, the opposite happens. I am quite sure, she must have experienced it many times before the incidents with her ex-boyfriend but decided to remain like that because she has this belief, if you trust people first, then they will trust you. However, this way of thinking is dangerous because greedy people can abuse your trust. Since she decided not to change, she thought, she could still accept people therefore she kept being betrayed. She said to Wang So that she trusted people so easily and from my point of view, this must happened to her too before the cheating of her boyfriend. 

Interesting is that Wang So is the opposite. He told her, that he gave long thoughts, if he should trust her or not. So he was very open about it. He thinks a lot before trusting people which explains why Wang So has only a few supporters next to him. On the other hand, Hae Soo is able due to her personality to make new friends so easily, but she is more superficial with them. For example, she knew that Wang Eun loved her but she was not really honest with him. Sure, she didn't want to hurt him, however he got hurt in the end because she had to tell him the truth. That's why her relationship to people is more superficial compared to Wang So's relationship, hence they have no problem to betray her or not to keep their promise. Wang Wook is acting like her boyfriend, comforting her in the belief that she shouldn't be worried about her situation ("everything is going to be okay"), yet he is not trying very hard to help her. Hae Soo is trusting Wang Wook too easily again therefore she hasn't complainted to him that he never kept his promises: "You will never be treated like that again" f. ex. Wang Wook is reinforcing this optimistic attitude: seeing everything through rose-coloured glasses. Nevertheless, she is not honest to Wang Wook too, although he is her actual boyfriend. Why is Hae Soo not honest to Wang Wook and people generally speaking?  

I guess, deep down Hae Soo likes being with Wang Wook because he makes her feel good, though she is not really true to herself. She doesn't share her inner thoughts with him: "don't worry", "I am fine", "I can wait", I'll just have to wait". These quotes were never her real thoughts, especially the last one because she said to herself that she knew that this was not going to happen. Hence she keeps saying that she doesn't want to change: she doesn't want to show her real thoughts or her real problems. She doesn't express her real feelings, if she is mad, angry or upset. Remember in the episode 4, she said to Wang So that she had her own issues and she was more afraid of herself than him. In my opinion, she doesn't like acting on her true feelings because this would reveal an ugly side from herself. She thinks, if she behaves on her feelings, she is a bad person.

While Wang So is so direct that he can hurt people, Hae Soo is the opposite, she tries to smoothe things so that she can be judged as a good and nice person. But she will not share her inner thoughts to others, the only exception is Wang So. Here she is entirely honest. She can be upset, angry, hurt, happy or horrified next to him, while she is only smiling to others. Eun never thought that she knew all along about his feelings for her (that's why he called her a "liar"), so for Eun it was as if she had been playing with his feelings. Another example is, Hae Soo is keeping Wang So in the dark about Wang Wook and Wang Wook about Wang So. De facto, honesty is not her quality. She is showing this happy face all the time, doing good deeds but deep down, she is not very honest to herself and to people. She did flirt with Wang Wook, while lady Hae was alive and she knew at some point that it was not right. And that's the second reason: she wants to be seen as a good person and doesn't show her true feelings and thoughts because she sees all these as something bad therefore she is all the time smiling and acting as nice person. However due to her inner thoughts and conflicts, she would like to be sometimes more selfish or to act on her feelings. Remember, when she mentioned her dream to lady Hae, she added that she wanted to tell to her ex-boyfriend and friend so many things but she never managed to say all the things she wanted to say.

From my opinion, she never criticised her friends and boyfriend, she accepted everything from them, although she must have been sad, mad or upset. She never dared to be brutally honest with them, as she didn't want to hurt them. She hates hurting people because she sees it as something negative. But being nice is not right either. Sometimes, inflicting pain is necessary so that you don't become the loser. Since she was so nice the entire time, people came to think, they could do anything to her and abused her kindness. 

But with Wang So, it is different because from the start he never cared about people's opinion hence he didn't treat her nicely. Since he was a "bad/rude" person from the beginning, she didn't need to pretend to be good. She didn't care as well about his opinion. Therefore she came to be brutally honest with him. She shared her pain and her deepest thoughts. Since Wang So is so direct to people and he asks questions about their motives (Baek Ah and JM), he is used to behave like that. So he met a girl who would behave exactly like him in front of him, hence he thought, he could be direct to her as well. This explains why he confronts her with reality, like f. ex. how palace life really is, he gives her advices (be careful about what you say, behave like a normal court lady aso) which also explains why Hae Soo is listening more and more to Wang So. His influence was so visible, when she quoted Wang So in front of Wang Wook. Hae Soo is different with him, but so like him. She acts on her emotions and speaks up for her believes.

As conclusion, she doesn't allow herself to show her true thoughts and feelings because she has a very high standard for right and wrong. Being nice is one of her flaws in the end. She keeps being optimistic and nice so that she can feel better about herself and wants to be seen as a strong and nice person as well. 

Striking is that Wang So is the opposite. He doesn't care about his image at all and acts on his feelings, however Hae Soo is so similar to him, when she is around him.

Okay that's it. another long analysis about Hae Soo.

Gwangjong of Goryeo

 

Gwangjong (925 – 4 July 975), personal name Wang So, was the fourth king of Goryeo. He was known for squashing his political rivals and creating an atmosphere of fear within the political realm at the time.

Goryeo met the time of change by ascending of Gwangjong. At his early stage as ruler, he maintained a passive attitude to nobles. However, he became more and more drastic. Choi Seung-Ro said that his regime can be divided into three parts. First is the period of grouping. Second is the period of strengthening power, and the last is the period of purge.

First period - the period of grouping (949–955)

 

At the early stage of Goryeo, it was a syndicate of powerful clans. Furthermore, many clans of them were the supporting powers of him. It was not easy to reinforce his power and he started to find the way to reinforce his power. He studied how to consolidate his power by reading zhenguanzhengyao. He got the support of the public by supporting Buddhism.

Second period - the period of strengthening power (955–959)

The focus of his reform was strengthening the power of King. He started to drive out powerful clans from the Goryeo court. He brought Ssang Gi and naturalized people from China into his court and started aggressive reforms. He made the law of emancipating slaves (노비안검법, 奴婢按檢法) in 958, and the national civil service examination in 958. The national civil service examination helped the Goryeo court furnish new faces and expel people of powerful clans.

Third period - the period of purge (959–975)

 

Powerful clans were unhappy because of his aggressive attitude and reforms. They perceived that they would be purged by him intuitively. Finally, some of them had the intention to revolt. However, they were killed by him before the revolt. Typical examples of the executed were Prince Heunghwa and Prince Gyeongchunwon.

He got a serious disease in July 975 and died just after few days.

I saw the article where he praised IU as a genius on set and once again when he defended her acting post-ML airing. I remembered being like,"Director, you probably should stay quiet, so things wouldn't get worse for IU... girl has been hated enough :( ". I didn't know he did another interview about him favoriting Wang Wook - Hae Soo, do you have a link by any chance?

@Adnana yes, basically the story up to the middle of Ep 9 was supposed to be in the first four episodes. Some things have changed, like the reception of Chinese envoys being replaced by the rain calling ritual, but the general gist of the plot has remained the same.

I've been watching the Korean version as they come out and have been slowly watching the DramaFever version with my husband, and (aside from being annoyed by so many inaccurate translationissues in the subtitles) I was furious to see how they had minimized the role of Wang So in episode 6. In the Korean version, he threatens Ji Mong to reveal an alternate plan to stop HS's marriage, and the dialogue shows that So is quite intelligent. When So actually stops the king right after Wook, his lines were butchered as well (part of it is DF translator's fault). The Hae clan of Honghwajin had been secretly trading horses with the Khitans, so he was saying the king could either punish them and give another clan their position, or win them over with an exclusive privilege regarding horse trading. The king uses this moment to educate his sons about the practicality of those options. Eventually, when HS hurts herself, Wook explains that the king decided to grant fertile land to the Hae clan to secure their loyalty, while the DF subtitle glossed over that. Then, later, when HS says goodbye to the princes to enter Damiwon (I could be wrong about the specific timing), Wang So says to Ji Mong, "You just had to keep her in the palace, huh?" showing that he was aware that Ji Mong had a hand in it.

 

We know that they have shot at least some of the skipped scenes. Like the scene where Yo insults Baek Ah and So sticks out for him that was supposed to happen before YH whipping HS that had been completely left out and then was added in a later episode for the Korean audience. When HS faints from blood loss, the script said WS is the one catching her, and we even saw that they had rehearsed it in one of the BTS clips, but was ultimately changed to Wook. There are scenes in the 6-minute trailer and episode trailers that are never shown in the actual episodes. Scenes mentioned by the actors or their family that were skipped. That's why Korean fans want to demand an all-inclusive, no cut version released on DVD or Blu-ray so that those scenes won't go to waste. Nobody has volunteered to spearhead it though. It would be great if some of the LJG fans would do it since they have a lot of experience, but they are busy with Iljimae and hopefully Two Weeks and tend to distance themselves from the general SHR fans because LJG gets criticized too much for the lack of viewership rating in Korea.

people ever wondering why HS so invest in protecting Eun???? or WJ also WW cause all the prince are her family.. when she first arrived there she got the chance to meet and know all prince and became part of their live... HS who have nobody in this period of time relaying to the princes to have fun and care for each other.. you have to understand she gladly will sacrifice herself to save the one she love.. in BBJX Ruoxi try to protect 8th and 10th even when she with 4th.. its her nature...

in WS POV HS is the only one matter cause she the only one who actually care for him at the first place.. its make sense why he only care about HS and want to protect her.. what WS felt is so deep that he will do anything to make HS belong to him..

even here we can see that in HS world all the prince have her care and attention even the only one that she love is WS but in WS world only HS live there.. this is what thing going to take wrong turn in their relationship... HS will protect the one she love even its mean against WS and WS will protect HS even from the one she love....

what i think is they both hurting each other because of their heart.. its just too different in the way they love each other...

 

now i totally embracing the fact that this story will have a sad ending but i hope our lead get their love and be happy before the angst , tear and hurt occurs....

Please don't get angry on me, I don't want to upset those optimistic but I think Wang So, as a king, (and maybe sooner) will show his soft spot only towards Hae Soo. And even so he will become possessive and obsessed with her. For many others he will be a king of Hell. Tough times demand a harsh king. Otherwise a nation can not survive. If this is an adaptation after C-version they can't deviate too much from the original story. (A very sad one). They also can't deviate too much from history. I don't expect to see much happiness and sweet moments from now on. I think that times of tranquility for Hae Soo have passed. She will have to start her own fight to tame the volcanic temper of Wang So. It's time to reveal the need for the emergence of Ha-jin in those days.

I wonder if Wang So would have killed CP if his mother and Wang Yo would have said they'll support him to become king. Something makes me think yes. And I think if those two would not have kept their words... he would have kill them too... very possible. (Well maybe not his mother). I wish I'm wrong in my statement and everything will go much smoother but I have to prepare my soul for what is worse. In any way I will love this drama no matter in what direction it will take.

Sorry to jump from one idea to another but... In nine episodes they have described a year of the reign of King Taejo. As I understand, the story must cover another nine years in just 11 episodes, and I think the action it will develop very fast. I wonder how they can achieve that and I hope everything's gonna be okay.
