Chingu I changed my mind on Putting all the blame on Hae Soo because she accomplished what her duties were in choosing the next King Since she chose him she should be happy that she chose right person for the job. After thinking real hard about everything that has happen, I will look at it this way. Hae Soo maybe be the reason WS will sit on the throne and yes History says says he murdered all his brothers. He may be a ruthless King but he accomplishes a lot for the people and he creates a system that helps the people academically and free the slaves.  From my POV , of he did not become king none of these would have never happen. Without HS.... WY and his mom would have succeeded in killing the CP the first time because WA would have never been there. So many deaths were delayed because of HS. Her appearance gave these princes some happpnews before everything went to hell. HS motivated JUng and Eun to grow up a bit. Even though there was sadness there was some happiness tooo. I feel HA should not feel any guilt because without HS WW would still be put in that uncomfortable situation in protecting his family. Lady OH would been by TaeJo side when he died but she would still have cancer Chingu.

Greetings all from a Chickpea with a heavy heart...  Here's the problem with the end of Ep. 14... JiMong!!!!!  He should have left Moo in the bath and let So cut down Yo and that other weasle brother then we wouldn't have this RIDICULOUS ending.  If I read the subtitles on the preview correctly, HS becomes the REASON So kills all his brothers... he is Yo's "wolf"...  RIDICULOUS.  I guess So will also end up marrying YH to "save" her because Yo dictates it.  This makes no sense.  If JiMong didn't step in, So would have cut down Yo and the Weasle (sounds like a Goryeo K-pop band) and HS would have been safe.  Moo was gone and nothing would bring him back.  So, my crystal ball says Weasle was slipping mercury into those bath-bags that CR was then floating in the King's bath.  Ergo, CR will die when this comes to light.  So will play the role of Yo's "canine" slaughtering anyone he's told to until the end of Ep. 15 when HS's life will be endangered anyway and he will have to do the necessary and take out Yo.  Why do Eun and Wife have to die... my guess is because it happens in history but also because she is the General's daughter and the General led the rebellion against Yo.  Its called payback.  This sets up for the drama to kind-of follow the history, I guess, and why when So eventually becomes King, there is so much blood-letting among the etended families.  

It drives me nuts when this happens in dramas.  Its like the writers are on a roll, then they need a transition and they come up with something that fits the story like a square peg in  a round hole but it gets them where they want to be.  Does anyone in his or her right mind think that in the middle of a fight, when a traitor thought dead would reappear, with the dead King in plain sight, that a Counselor would call a halt to the fighting to grieve over a dead regent and throw the battle to the bad guys... In what universe does this make sense....  I think we're seeing writer fatigue.  At this rate I'm thinking HS is just going to disappear from Goryeo and those SO/HS shippers are never going to see the ending they hope for.  Ah, well, who was it who said romance is only romance as long as there are forces keeping the couple apart...

Episode 14 - some thoughts

How I miss the lighter episodes in the beginning. Darkness is written all over ever since Oh Sanggung was hung.  I am afraid it is going to get darker and darker. Like some of you here - my heart gets heavier watching it but I am too invested to give up now. 

There were several key references back to BBJX C-version in this episode. 

1. So doesn't know about Wookie-Soo relationship

How can he not know? But I guess they have to keep the story arc close to the BBJX version. Queen and Yeonhwa will probably be instrumental in letting Soo know the extent of Wookie's change is largely due to her to cause Soo to breakdown (and possibly miscarry the baby). From the moment she covered So's scar - the wheel was set in motion. By the time she realises her role, a good number people close to her would have died or been sacrificed (Oh Sanggung, Chae Ryeong, Soon Deok, 10th Prince, CP and more). It is impossible for her to continue living in the palace no matter how much she loves So. 

So will be driven by jealousy but deep down he will try to understand her. But the love is not enough. They are both bounded by duty and the people that they want to protect. So will hate Wook with every fibre of his being. A jealous So is a very dangerous So. 

2. The promise of freedom

So promised in the earlier episode to take Soo out of the palace to let her be free. This would come back to haunt him as she would ask him to fulfil this promise in the later episodes. While Ruoxi wanted freedom, her need to leave throughout the drama was not as strong as Soo until the end. 

3. The promise of marriage

The scene at Damiwon between So-Soo mirrors BBJX ep 21 when 4th prince had to break up with Ruoxi after the 13th prince's imprisonment. 4th Prince was no longer in position to ask for her hand. The words were similar - "hate or resent me..it was all my fault". 

But the promise of marriage between So-Soo was not as strong but implied in their interaction. The reason for So marrying the princess was incredulous (in my opinion) but from the ancient perspective - I can understand. 

4. Poetry and the promise of better things to come

4th Prince in BBJX had elegant taste and was well versed in poetry and painting. His choice of gifts for Ruoxi was always meaningful. Those gifts gave Ruoxi a glimpse into 4th Prince's likes and dislikes. Hence she went all out to learn and understand the poems that he liked - Wang Wei, Li Sao etc. The more she understood him, the deeper she fell in love with him. 

So's softer side is quite a surprise to me. I didn't expect this poem to appear in the K-version. And yes...I wish they gave him a better handwriting! This poem mirrored the BBJX ep 18. And this poem stayed with Ruoxi till the end. She kept rewriting the poem until her hands were too weak. The introduction of this poem puts the K-version in a similar direction. 

The K-version has a different feel as compared to the C-version - mainly due to the difference in the character of 4th prince. However, the signs are all pointing towards the same ending. It is unlikely any of the promises will realise for So and Soo. Perhaps the promises can only be realised in present day. 

The K version has a lot to offer but the editing is really screwing up the show. The depth of writing is definitely there given the rich materials available. The inner thoughts of Hae Soo is crucial in this drama but her thoughts are often cut out in the international version.

A few more weeks before my life goes back to normal. Till then - I will hang in there and not let go.

As far as I would like to have happy ending for So & Soo.. as far as I believe I need to prepare my heart for the worst sad ending on the final episode... 

I really love our every our OTP scenes in eps 14... No words can describe how WS loves HS and HS finally accepts WS love.

But i'm still hoping if HS and WS can not be together in Goryeo era at least they can be together in the present day (HS as Go Hajin and WS as a good man in GHJ's present life)..

Despite the fact that So claimed to both YW and his mother that he would take the throne, I don't for a second think he believed it. He was just saying it in challenge/to be contrary, or to point out how ridiculous the idea was that something like a throne could actually win someone's heart. He doesn't want power for power's sake, and based on various conversations he's had with his father and Ji Mong (and others), I don't think he's ever considered becoming emperor as an actual possibility for him. His conversation with Ji Mong in this last episode just wrung my heart because of how trapped he feels and how resigned he is to his 'fate' of always being bound like a dog to others' whims.

Anyway, I anticipate him feeling a lot more trapped with Yo on the throne and Su's life on the line and I'm terrified of how far he'll be forced to go to protect the one person he's convinced he can't live without - and what will be left of him when the dust settles. For all the rumors about him and his 'scary' reputation (and yes, we saw with the monks that it's at least partly deserved), and as much as he lashed out in the beginning (rather like a kicked animal) So has shown himself to have a gentle heart, and not only towards Su, which I think is hugely important - the fact that he first rose to her defense (the whipping, her marriage) on a purely human level, and that injustice genuinely bothers him (Baek Ah, his niece, the man who lost his arm, etc.). It's not that he's violent and Su's love somehow redeems him; it's that he's actually terribly kind (#말랑카우) and decent and the world he lives in is going to force him to be cruel in order to survive it. Thinking he had killed Yo was hard enough on him, and Yo had been the aggressor...not to mention he would have been put to death for treason regardless, in the end..But if those b******* really do manage to make him hunt down Eun, I feel like it's going to be a tipping point. I just hope that when everything goes to hell Su is able to see the person and not the 'figure'...and be there to help him pick up the pieces. (Please, Su! Please! FIGHT for him!)

On that note, I think I'm ready to see 'Ruthless Su'. She finally found her spine!...to stand up to...So..? Okay, so I actually think being able to go toe-to-toe like that with someone she loves is a huge step forward for Su on a personal level and proof that she's secure in his love for her...but I still really wish she had found the guts to stand up to...just about anyone else. I want to see her employ that steel-spine in his defense. We've had Naive Su, and Zombie Su, and now even Elegant-but-Repressed Su, and we're finally starting to see the reemergence of Happy Su...but if we can't have her I'm waaay past ready for Badass Su. Yup. Badass Su all the way,

 

I'm right there with you. I'm so ready for badass Su. We've been seeing her character transform from a caterpiller to a beautiful butterfly. I just want her to become a badass butterfly who can flap her wings and cause a goddamn hurricane. She's going to need to be strong to stand by So because s''t is about to go down.

I was asking the same question until I remember in the episode when the princes found out about HS being married off to an old man (whom at that time they didn't know was the King), Eun did say that he would request his grandfather's help to save HS so it probably means his grandfather must be quite powerful to be able to have a say in that matter. Plus, Eun's wife is the daughter of General Park who undeniably has proved great loyalty to the late Kings. My guess is that Wook may warn Yo about Eun's family's influence and suggest him to annihilate the whole clan in order to protect and strengthen his position as a King. However, I really hope that this time the preview is misleading us again and that we won't have to witness the cute, innocent couple getting killed, at least not by WS himself

@ruizaio May I have your take on WS in E14?

After all I'd seen of him up to this point, I trusted that anything & everything Wang So (the fictional character) does in this drama--incl. his upcoming marriage with Yeonhwa--will be for Hae Soo. That's what you said/believed, too, right? Yet in E14, WS decides to abandon his promises to HS, decides even to stop courting her (the boat scene). He's giving up on her! And I just don't get it.

Before, WS firmly said that the crown is meaningless to him without HS. Yet now he's sacrificing her--not even out of ambition for the throne, but out of loyalty to the King. Shouldn't his first loyalty be for HS? She's supposedly the most important person in his life, bar none. As late as during the stargazing date in E14, he's still basically admitting that he couldn't live without her. So yeah... I utterly did not expect his about-face later in E14. I don't think it bodes well for the future.

Why do you think E14 was written like that? I mean, I see how it might be one more stepping stone in WS's king-making process, but doesn't it contradict his character as previously established? We know that his entire emotional world (and his sanity, pretty much) depends on HS. It just makes no sense for him to willingly abandon her like that.

Meanwhile, Wang Eun and Sun Deok hole-up in Hae Su's room before departing the palace but...

 

*Historically, Wang Gyu (Eun's grandfather) was killed under charges of planing a rebellion (though many believe this to be a cover for shady political maneuvering), so it's possible Yo is taking a page out of Wook's book and trying to look like the hero who returned too late to save the emperor from Wang Gyu's plot to kill him...and try to make Eun pay the price..? (although, who, exactly led the last rebellion, pray tell?) Ah well, what little we've seen of the citizens makes them look like a flock of sheep crossed with a lynch mob, so who knows what they'll believe. I guess in royal politics, even if everyone knows you're guilty, if no one's in a position to point fingers, you get off scott-free...or something...?

yes that scene also in BBJX but its when 4th tell RX he want the throne and RX make him promise not to lie and tell her the truth...

i think the problem will arise when WS as a king kept thing as a secret and not telling HS cause he know HS well enough that she will not accepted what he done... their promise is slowly being broken and the trust also will be broken...

i think all the little thing point out in the same direction with novel.. they will take the same route that is the heartbreaking separation between WS and HS because that is the core and essence of this story....

i just hope the real ending after Goryeo era that will be satisfying...

Third, I'm sorry that I have to remove the quotes because I was trying to back read between pages 145 - about 700 something and needed to catch up on the latest information. Everything's moving way too fast and episode 14 just has way too much stuffs to capture.

@penelop3 At this point, I don't think Wook is loving Soo anymore. He's obsessed with her just like what @Sharine Phinisia said. I think that he himself thinks he's doing it because he loves her (or maybe there's some little love left?) but it seems like power and the desire for the throne has blinded his eye. He thinks that obtain those will give him the love that he lost but in reality, he lost it himself. True, his sister triggered him to bear the burden but he kept sinking into the darkness and the love between him and Hae Soo also sank. Someone analyzed how he felt that the system owed him so pretty much, we’re seeing him getting revenge on the system that owed him and how he lost to someone like So (both in love and actions). Even Yeon Hwa realized that they shouldn’t be helping Yo but Wook didn’t seem to care. They’re both wolves but Yeon Hwa has better sense than Wook. That just re-emphasized again the point that if Yeon Hwa was a man, all the princes would need to stand on both sides looking at her walking up to that seat - the throne.

I remember in episode 1, when the princes were laughing together, Ji Mong had this look on him that he would be missing their smiles because he knew of the impending and unavoidable game of thrones and bloodshed. Even though Crown Prince Moo / King Hyejong was incompetent in politics (in the drama, he’s poisoned) but he truly was a nice guy. He loves everyone. He was destined to become a King but his reign had to end. Had he been more competent about politics, I think he would make a great king himself and could follow King Taejo’s footsteps. Very good acting to the KSK and KSH. It’s truly a painful scene to watch. Wang So also lost a brother that he respected and loved (aside from Baek Ah, I guess). Regarding Wook's characterization, I think it's the writer's plan. That part is really hard to decipher because like you said, he was a gentle loving character then did a 180 degree to become this dark Wook. It probably is the writer's plan. And maybe because of the writer's plan, it's hard to tell because both HJH and KHN are acting as the bad guys now. That was my opinion after watching HJH's previous dramas and then this one. Or maybe I just didn't like HJH's previous dramas LOL and then the LION KING just appeared to break our hearts and SoSoo peaceful loving moments. This is definitely his breakout role. Glad to see him gaining attention after all his best friends getting a breakout role. Yep, if Yo didn’t show up, with all the work to poison Moo with mercury, Wook would rebel sooner or later by giving out the decree to declare himself king. Since Yo came in, Wook would be planning again to make him the hero by killing Yo again. Won is the two-timer here. I just can’t think Yeon Hwa will redeem herself. In tomorrow’s episode, she is the one that lets Yo know about where Eun and his wife are hiding. She kills with her words rather than doing the work. Yeon Hwa has her own plans and is evil too but she has more sense than Wook. Someone mentioned that she's wearing the pants while Wook wet his pants. Really good metaphor there. She’ll be calculating how to make her the queen, change her support from Wook to So and eventually marry So. And yes, Yeon Hwa can’t rely on Wook anymore. Wook is too dangerous for her to back him now. She rather chooses So so she can climb the ladder of power. I think she will slowly understand that even if her brother, Wook, is capable of ruling as a King (not talking about his evilness here), she cannot see a man from him like she sees in So. After all, she is attracted to So. Hence the her character's tagline - she probably will be madly in love with him later on (who knows). And @valsava is correct. If Yo exiles So, Wook will come at him in full force. Yo knows Wook is dangerous and capable of killing him off. Maybe Wook suggests using Hae Soo to control So but Yo probably has hidden intentions too. @mewtwo predicted that Yo is blackmailing both Wook and Yo. Thus, that's probably how we get the scene of Wook shooting arrows at Eun.

@bebebisous33 Well said! Baek Ah and So have so many things in common. If BA was his full-blooded brother, not Yo, So would have a better childhood despite his mother’s rejection. And with all the heartbreak and pain that are about to come, Baek Ah is the person that So needs. Baek Ah understands and can help So.

@feignedreality So the death chain is like this: Lady Hae, Lady Oh, King Taejo, Crown Prince Moo, Seon Deok (possibly tomorrow unless there’s a twist), Eun. After this, it’ll be Yo, Won and Chaeryung.

@violet90 It's ironic that So doesn't want the throne but later on does everything to get the throne to ensure freedom. All the princes (except Moo, Eun and Won) are after the throne because getting the throne doesn't just give them power but that is their way to freedom (in each of their minds and ideals).

@TeBe Even if in history Gwangjong didn't kill the 10th prince, the writer is taking creative liberties here so there's nothing much to say. Plus, we're not even sure if the 10th prince died naturally in history or not. There's just not much information because @ruizaio did say that back then, everything was written from the perspectives of the winners. So a lot of the information may not be as they seem to be.

@stevii Considering that MLSHR is airing and will be airing in over 10 countries (not counting Korea), that's a lot of money coming in for SBS. Although, I do hope domestic ratings will help the cast to win the year-end awards.

@smitten1710 You're right. Everything is against SoSoo. From WookSoo to SBS / baseball (at least for the next 2 weeks) to WonChae to YoWookWon to YeonHwa.

@Rose34 I hope SBS creates a special award category for Yo-Wook-Won (the evil trio) because they slayed their roles . I will raise my two hands to support them winning that. LOL

Because the princess reminds him too much of himself. He wants to save the princess from being a hostage and he knows Soo hate a man with a few wives so he knows by marrying the princess, he deems himself not valid of Soo anymore. So he decided to just let go and don't give her any promises because giving promises and then break it is worse than anything.
