“We apologize for not respecting the diversity in interpretation. We had posted the initial post because we were thrown off by new interpretation that was different from the original author’s intention and ours, which we shared with the author. Please regard it as one opinion among many.”

How could they share anything with the author since he's been dead for over 30 years?

"it is through these kinds of debates art grows, as well as the artists and the people who listened, watched, interpreted, and discussed." I like this statement. We learn something new everyday, this is life. Thanks to IU!

her showcase explanation was better worded and different to whats been spread around. even then i felt that though she should have worded it better and applied better research to art even as creative freedom vs interpretaion blahblah... this whole turning her into a witch pedo is ridiculous and has become a bit hypocritical

I'm glad they apologized. This whole thing is their fault. They didn't even know the whole story before opening their mouths, that may be okay for ignorant people on the internet but not for a company. I stand with IU and with freedom of expression and interpretation.

Well, I'm certainly glad they discussed it with the author...I wonder how they got in touch with him...séance, voodoo, witchcraft? He's been deceased for decades.
Publishers need to publish books and leave the commentary alone. They started this debacle. We all know that even when IU has been declared innocent of all accusations there will still be bashers and crusty little haters that bring this up everytime she makes the news.

Are you IU's fan? I am not her anti fan but I heard the sound and the translation. It is very uncomfortable hearing it.
Btw, how are you? Will email you soon. Where are you based now?

Wow...this is a very complex and sensitive issue. Where does one artist's (the novelist) right end and another artist's (IU) right begin? Some are defending IU's interpretation as an artist, but ALL artists have a right to protect their original art/characters/creations from being used or misused. Hence copyright laws.

Also troubling is that I feel like people are quick to dismiss this as just another "made up" scandal by netizens, but it is dealing with an extremely sensitive issue: an abused child. Even if Zeze is a fictional character, it bothers me so few people show compassion or sensitivity for the topic.

In my opinion, IU made (several) mistakes, and she apologized, and it shouldn't ruin her career.

BUT it is a very delicate issue so I hope people won't dismiss it lightly or use "art" as justification.

re: those who wondered how the publishers could "share" anything with the author, who is dead...I thought the publishers just meant they held/shared the same interpretation as the author? not that they actually contacted him or discussed it with him. Probably just an odd translation.

Ah...good point. Now that I re-read the statement, perhaps that's what they were trying to say. But can they speak for Senor Vasconcelos? Has he left notes behind relating to his work?

Songwriters writing songs about literature is old stuff. Here's some western examples: http://mentalfloss.com/article/31467/11-songs-inspired-literature which oddly does not mention Jefferson Starship's "White Rabbit" which was inspired by Alice in Wonderland (and who knows what Grace Slick was on at the time she wrote the song).

I do realize that the argument is not about the fact IU wrote a song inspired by a book, but the thoughts her song conveys. And no one is going to win this argument because it is only about opinion. I'm amazed at all the various places on the internet where this is being hotly debated.

IU said:"I’m not saying this to the young Zeze. When just looking at Zeze’s temperament, I thought it was sexy.”

Why the media purposely omitted certain part of what IU said, twisted to " Zeze is sexy" ?
This can not be misunderstanding cos reporters should have had voice-recorded the interview.

Are they purely doing this to gain more viewers or they purposely drag IU into this kind of controversy?

Should the reporters/ media apologize to the public for their mistake in reporting?

I think they should, as they carry heavy social responsibility to the public to report the unbiased truth. They are the co-contributors to this controversy!

As for the illegal sampling of bonus track song, why the media report it as plagiarism of title song? What is their purpose? Someone behind this?
