I hope there was a slight translation error and that this wasn't her example of bullying or racism.

I can believe the translation is correct. I live in New Zealand and I can remember in the 90s that there was a lot more explicit racism towards Asians in our country and Australia. Black liquorice is such an intense flavour, people either love it or hate it. I can believe that some sick kids thought it would be fun to pretend they were Jung Ryeo Won's friend and trick her into eating it. She thought she was going to eat something great and then it turned out bad. Some people are evil like that. I wish Ryeo Won all the best.

While I can understand the reasoning, that doesn't automatically make that the case. As she stated, she didn't speak much English (and presumably didn't know much about the culture either), so she could have easily misunderstand what was happening. I am in NO way trying to discount her story or anything like that, I'd just like more details about it to understand where she is coming from, you know?

Friends have given me various foods saying, "This is the best ever!" and it was disgusting to me (and, in one case, made me sick). Afterwards, they're all "How can you not like this? OMG your weird", so I can both see how it could have been bullying and how it could be a misunderstanding.
