It was definitely quite a story- so many girls in and out! Most SJ fans (like myself) are most familiar with Stella Kim since she and Siwon were an "item" ^^ Hard to imagine the lineup being so different than what it is now, but I definitely think their debut with those specific 9 members was a wise move. Despite their flaws, SM definitely knows what they are doing when it comes to making groups. Anyways, thanks for sharing the link. I enjoyed reading it.

But, What is it! Taeyeon temporarily retired from her position as leader? Soompi, are you crazy?

She wanted to take a break. At first the members didn't want her to and asked her not to, but then they agreed to let her have a little break for a bit and just act like there was no leader while she needed time. It didn't last too long though of course. She spoke about it on a show. I double checked it again before I posted it (in case my memory of the show was wrong.) :) Hope that helps.

I just replied to your comment but it disappeared for some reason. Oops! ^^ Anyways, yes. Taeyeon was stressed out and wanted to take a break from being the leader. At first the members didn't want that and asked her not to do so. But eventually they agreed to let her have a short break due to all her stress. It was just a short break of course, and now she is back to being the leader. She spoke about it on a show one time and explained they agreed not to have a leader for a while so she could rest. In case my memory of the show was wrong, I double checked before I posted this fact (and the other facts too fyi). However, since a lot of you are disagreeing, I will re-word it differently to make you guys happy. :)

I remember Lee Hwanhee was supposed to be the 9th member of SNSD but Sunny took her spot (most people think it's because she is Lee Soo Man's niece), in the end, she debuted 5 years later (if I'm not wrong) as a solo artist

This was really interesting! I feel bad that Taeyeon was so stressed she was sleepwalking and everything. Kpop leaders have a lot of pressure and burden on them! Also nice to read they do so many charitable works to help others. :)

In that early photo, I think it was on page 2--who's who? The early photo and extra members are confusing me, lol. I think the first row (seated) is Seohyun, Sunny (I think?), Yoona, (?), Sooyoung...back row is (first girl?), Hyoyeon, Taeyeon, Jessica, (?), (?) Is that right?

But Sunny only trained in Star world, and when it shut down, she then joined SM for the first time.
This is not correct

"Thus becoming the first Korean stars to appear on these mainstream, American TV shows"?

Even as a fan of SNSD, I have to admit they weren't. Wonder Girls were the first Korean stars to appear on mainstream American TV when they performed "Nobody" on So You Think You Can Dance in 2010: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlZ8RU0HIXQ
