Is KBS Too Dependent on the Power of Yoo Jae Suk?

Recommended Posts

The variety programs of broadcast station KBS are undergoing changes. While its direction has not completely transformed, the channel is now catering to the viewers' interests more than ever before.

The most visible example is "I Am a Man," which is set to kick off on August 8. Being led by the "Nation's MC" Yoo Jae Suk, the show's pilot episode was a hit and recorded high ratings. Described as a talk show only for men, the show caught the public's interest with its unique concept, leading to the extension of the program.

However, "I Am a Man" will soon begin to air on Friday evenings, while "Happy Together" also hosted by Yoo Jae Suk airs on Thursdays. This has caused many to wonder if KBS is showing signs of extensive reliance on Yoo Jae Suk. As popular family drama "Couple Clinic" will be replaced by "I Am a Man," there has been partial opposition towards the new variety show by loyal fans of the drama.

In regards to such questions and claims, Park Tae Ho, the President of KBS' Variety Department, said, "I don't think it is a problem that Yoo Jae Suk appears on KBS' variety shows for two days straight," and continued, "An MC is naturally an important person, but 'Happy Together 3' and 'I Am a Man' have completely different concepts. Yoo Jae Suk, other MCs, and producers bring out the uniqueness of each program, which attracts viewers."

He also hinted at an upcoming change in the concept of "Happy Together 3," saying, "'Happy Together 3' will also face changes. While it has been loved for a long time, it needs to be renewed in order to secure the continuity of the viewers' love."

"KBS' variety shows will undergo changes also in the future. Recently, we have received positive feedback about the addition of Song Il Gook to 'Superman Returns.' KBS' variety department is based on such sincerity," Park Tae Ho continued.

"We will be presenting a number of new variety shows. We will do our best to offer dreams and hope to our young viewers," he concluded, asking for viewers' continuous love and support.
