Kim Hye Soo, Yum Jung Ah, Jo In Sung, and Park Jung Min will come together for director Ryu Seung Wan’s new film Smugglers (literal title).

 

According to Starnews, Jo In Sung and Park Jung Min have newly joined the Smugglers team and are coordinating details. Jo In Sung worked with director Ryu in his latest film Mogadishu, while this is Park Jung Min’s first collaboration with Ryu.

 

Smugglers depicts a dark battle surrounding smuggling. Kim Hye Soo and Yun Jung Ah have preciously confirmed their appearances as two-top female leads. Jo and Park will spice up the story with these two impressive ladies as two major figures.

 

Earlier last year, Ryu finished filming his film Mogadishu in Morocco with Kim Yoon Seok, Jo In Sung, and Heo Joon Ho before the COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe. Originally, Mogadishu was scheduled to be screened last summer as Lotte Entertainment’s tentpole film, but it was indefinitely delayed in the aftermath of the pandemic.

 

And instead of waiting for his film to be introduced in theaters, Ryu chose to begin in his new project, Smugglers. After completing his scenario, he added some of the best names in the industry to his production.

 

Smugglers has drawn attention from both inside and outside the film industry in that it is the first female two-top film to be released in 20 years following the 2002 action film No Blood No Tears, starring Jeon Do Yeon and Lee Hye Young. Amid the slew of films starring actors in their 20s-50s, Smugglers is the first Korean commercial film to feature two top actresses in their 50s.

 

After completing pre-production work, Smugglers will begin filming in June.

The Movie Business division of media conglomerate NEW revealed a lineup for upcoming works. Eleven total works are presented, including works that are past their production stage, ready to premiere. The lineup also introduces pieces that recently caught the public’s attention with its cast members.

 

NEW’s movie business department newly arranged its organization into Content Strategy Planning HQ and Distribution Strategy Planning HQ. The company sought changes according to the climates of new media through planning, investment, production, and distribution. It also signed a long-term equity investment agreement with Library Pictures International, a Hollywood investment company. Amid the changing times after COVID-19, we look forward to whether the upcoming works of popular actors and production crew will bring life back to the theatre industry.

 

1. Hostage

This movie depicts the unprecedented incident where a famous actor is abducted at the center of Korea. Blurring the boundary between fiction and reality, Hwang Jung Min plays the kidnapped actor Hwang Jung Min. In the reality-thriller, he gets kidnapped in the early morning with no evidence left behind nor witnesses. Director Pil Gam Sung stated, “I hope this movie comes as a rollercoaster that is surprising, enjoyable, and thrilling. It will be fun for viewers to both empathize with and watch the protagonist. Especially in a situation where the distinction between fiction and non-fiction is unclear.”

 

2. Special Cargo

A crime action film that unfolds as Eun Ha gets embroiled in an unforeseen event. The character is a driver who fast-delivers anything with a success rate of 100%. Park So Dam will demonstrate action scenes as she acts as the driver with exceptional driving skills. “You will be able to see how awesome Park So Dam’s stunts are,” states director Park Dae Min as he adds, “please look forward to the action scenes and the close bonds between characters as they run towards a goal.”

 

3. Not the Lips (literal title)

Illustrated by this film is a story of those whose lives and works are complicated as they get entangled in bizarre romances. It is the first full-length movie to be directed by actress Jo Eun Ji. Earlier, she won the Jury’s Special Award from the 2017 Mise-en-scene Short Film Festival for her short film, 2 Nights 3 Days. Director Jo Eun Ji explained, “It’s a comedy that captures the process of various characters experiencing growth from different relationships. Hopefully, the interaction between characters who are full of personalities will create laughter.” The work stars Ryu Seung Ryong, Oh Na Ra, Kim Hee Won, Lee Yoo Young, Sung Yoo Bin, Moo Jin Sung, and more.

 

4. Hello, My Soulmate

It is a story about the soulmate we all once had back then, with whom we shared our friendship, breakup, and love. Kim Da Mi, Jeon So Nee, and Byeon Woo Seok become the radiant youths in the film as they capture Jeju Island’s beautiful scenery and their sincerity that overcomes generations. “It’s about finally realizing who they are through each other, after going in circles for a long time. Please look forward to the special friendship between the women who are subtle yet strong,” director Min Yong Geun urged.

 

5. Handsome Guys

Lee Sung Min and Lee Hee Joon play the two lead characters of this scary yet funny comedy work. The plot unfolds as the village and cabin’s myth comes to life when the two move to the mountain cabin. With unforgettable first appearances, these men call themselves ‘Handsome Guys.’ Director Nam Dong Hyub stated, “Though shamelessly funny, the movie reveals how genuine and serious the two men are. You will be able to enjoy a different kind of fun in the message that points out the prejudices and misunderstandings related to outward appearances.”

 

6. The Witch: Part 2

It is a sequel to The Witch: Part 1, The Subversion. The movie deals with a girl who awakes from the huge secret lab and those who chase after her. An audition-winning Rookie actress Shin Si Ah will play the film’s main character. Along with existing cast members Jo Min Su and Kim Da Mi, expectations are rising as Lee Jong Suk, Park Eun Bin, Seo Eun Joo, Jin Goo, and Sung Yoo Bin will be newly joining. Director Park Hoon Jung detailed, “It is a work that allows people to face human nature through a transcendence being. I hope it will be a pleasant gift to fans who anticipated the sequel, as they will be able to take a step further into the universe.”

7. Smugglers

It is a work that became the talk of the town only with the news of its cast members, including Kim Hye Soo, Yum Jung Ah, Jo In Sung, and Park Jung Min. With a small, peaceful seaside village of the 70s as its background, the film depicts the story of two women who get involved in smuggling. Director Ryu Seung Wan plans to fiercely portray the risky smuggling operation that happens upon the vast sea.

 

8. High Five (literal title)

Director Kang Hyeong Cheol, the master of storytelling, will come back to the world of supernatural powers. High Five (working title) draws the story of five novice heroes who coincidentally happened to get superpowers as they meet those who yearn after their abilities. Lee Jae In, Yoo Ah In, Ahn Jae Hong, Ra Mi Ran, Kim Hee Won, and Oh Jung Se will make their appearances in the film.

 

9. Honest Candidate 2

As a follow-up for Honest Candidate, previous cast members, including Ra Mi Ran, Kim Mu Yeol, Yoon Kyung Ho, and director Jang Yoo Jung, will return. The sequel will focus on Joo Sang Sook’s story, the owner of the mouth of truth, as she hopes to return to politics.

 

10. The Land of Happiness (literal title)

The story of a lawyer who tries their best to save a figure caught up in an incident that shook modern history to its core. It is a new movie by Choo Chang Min, the film director that recorded 10 million viewers, Masquerade. As Jo Jung Suk plays the role of the lawyer Jung In Hoo, he will be making a bold impression than he did before.

 

11. The Owl

It is a thriller film that lays out the overnight incident that happened inside the palace. It depicts Kyung Soo’s story, a blind acupuncturist with a gifted talent, as he finds out about the forbidden secret of the king. Choi Min Sik will play the king, and Ryu Jun Ryeol will become Kyung Soo, the acupuncturist. Ahn Tae Jin, who previously was the assistant director of The King & The Clown, will grab the megaphone.

The executive office of Baeksang Arts Awards announced the final list of actors and works for each category on the morning of the 12th through their official website. The nominees are chosen from those who were active in the past year in the fields of TV, movies, and plays.

 

Listed for Television series are Beyond Evil (JTBC), It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, Flower of Evil, My Unfamiliar Family (tvN), and Extracurricular (Netflix). Nominees for Best Entertainment Program were spread among various channels, including March of the Ants (KakaoTV), Hangout with Yoo (MBC), Sing Again (JTBC), You Quiz on the Block (tvN), and Legendary Stage – Archive K (SBS).

This year’s Baeksang Arts Awards will take into consideration contents released between May 1st of 2020 to April 11th of 2021. This includes all Korean media from terrestrial, cable, OTT, and web channels. 40 total members of the professional judging committee within the industry conducted a preliminary survey to select final candidates. 

 

The Baeksang Arts Awards will be held live on JTBC from 9 PM KST on May 13th. It will be hosted without audiences, due to the COVID-19 situation.

'Parasite' star Lee Jeong-eun to star in Netflix's new series

Actress Lee Jeong-eun, who garnered international fame through her role as a housekeeper in the award-winning film "Parasite," will star in Netflix's upcoming series, "Juvenile Judgement" (direct translation).

The actress's agency, Will Entertainment, announced Tuesday that Lee has agreed to play the role of a judge named Na Geun-hee in the drama series.

Directed by Hong Jong-chan, who is responsible for hit TV series such as "Master's Sun" and "Live Up to Your Name," the series will follow the lives of characters at a district juvenile court as well as cases involving young offenders. The court gets a refreshing perspective when an elite judge, Shim Eun-seok (Kim Hye-soo), who has a strong aversion towards juvenile criminals, is newly appointed there. 

Lee will play one of the judges at the court who constantly finds herself clashing with Eun-seok, due to their different approaches to the cases.

This series will be the second time the two actresses will co-star in a project, since co-leading the mystery film, "The Day I Died: Unclosed Case," last year.

Actors Lee Sung-min and Kim Mu-yeol will also star in the series as judges.

Lee Jeong-eun debuted with a play in 1991, but it wasn't until recently that she came to the public's attention with a minor role in the mega-hit series, "Mr. Sunshine." Her breakout role came in director Bong Joon-ho's 2019 film, "Parasite." Since then, she has starred in various TV series and films, including the KBS dramas, "When the Camellia Blooms" and "Once Again," which won her the network's year-end awards.

Director Lee Joon-ik of the period film "Book of Fish" and comedian Yoo Jae-suk were the big winners at this year's Baeksang Arts Awards.

At the ceremony that took place on Thursday evening at KINTEX exhibition hall in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, Lee became a three-time grand prize winner after taking home the same award in 2006 for "King and the Clown" and in 2016 for "The Throne" and "Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet."

"A period film costs so much to make. The cast and crew made sacrifices in order to bring this film to the big screen. The film wasn't a big success although it received good reviews from critics and movie fans. Thank you for the award," Lee said during his acceptance speech.

The acclaimed director also paid tribute to the late veteran film producer Lee Choon-yun, who passed away on May 11. He was the head of Cine 2000 and producer of hit films including "Art Museum By the Zoo" (1988) and "The Terror Live" (2013).

Director Bong Joon-ho attended this year's event as presenter, after he didn't show up at last year's event even though he won the grand prize for his black comedy thriller "Parasite." It has been reported that his next project will be an animated film about deep-sea creatures. He is now writing the script for a currently unnamed English-language film.

The female-driven mystery comedy "Samjin Company English Class" won the Best Film award, while director Hong Eui-jeong of the crime thriller "Voice of Silence" received the Best Director award. Filmmaker Park Ji-wan won the Best Screenplay award for his crime drama "The Day I Died: Unclosed Case."

Yoo Ah-in won the Best Actor award for his role as a mute crime scene cleaner in "Voice of Silence," while Jun Jong-seo took home the Best Actress award for her role as a psychopath in the thriller "The Call."

The Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards in the film category went to Park Jung-min, who played a transgender character in "Deliver Us from Evil," and Kim Sun-young, who played an ailing single mom in "Three Sisters."

Comedian Yoo won the grand prize for hosting hit variety shows such as tvN's "You Quiz of the Block" and MBC's "Hangout with Yoo." With the latest recognition, Yoo became a two-time grand prize winner following 2013 for SBS's "Running Man"

"I don't know what to say. It's such a pleasure and honor to accept this award. People call me a presenter or TV show host, but I'm a comedian. I'll try to arouse more laughter in the future," Yoo said in his acceptance speech.

JTBC's drama series "Beyond Evil" grabbed three awards ― Best Drama, Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Shin Ha-kyun. Kim So-yeon won the Best Actress award for her performance in "The Penthouse: War in Life."

The Best Director award in the TV category went to Kim Cheol-kyu of tvN's drama series, "Flower of Evil." The Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards in TV went to Oh Jung-se, who played a patient with autism in tvN's "It's Okay to Not Be Okay," and Yeom Hye-ran who played the leader of the counters in OCN's "Uncanny Counter."

For variety shows, singer-actor Lee Seung-gi won Best Variety Performer awards for JTBC's "Sing Again" and Jang Do-yeon won for MBC's "I Live Alone."

The TikTok Popularity Awards, voted by video app TikTok users around the world, went to Kim Sun-ho of tvN's drama series, "Start-Up," and Seo Yea-ji of, "It's Okay to Not Be Okay." 

The organizing committee shrugged off a dispute surrounding Seo despite growing calls to remove her from the list of nominees as she has been embroiled in controversy over manipulating and controlling her then-boyfriend Kim Jung-hyun in 2018.

Kim Hye-soo, Yum Jung-ah, Zo In-sung, Park Jung-min, Go Min-si, and Kim Jong-soo in director Ryoo Seung-wan's new work 'Smuggling'

 

GO Min-si, a rising star whose face has become known to global viewers through several successful Netflix projects, has joined the cast of Director RYOO Seung-wan’s upcoming film Smuggling (translate title).

She joins a star-studded cast that already includes KIM Hye-soo, YUM Jung-ah, ZO In-sung and PARK Jung-min.

Set against the backdrop of a peaceful seaside village, the film will follow two women, to be played by KIM and YUM, who become involved in smuggling in the 1970s.

GO Min-si has seen her popularity rise after appearing in Netflix Original shows such as the monster drama Sweet Home and both seasons of the youth romance Love Alarm. GO, whose film credits include The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion (2018) and The Battle: Roar to Victory (2019), is currently on screens in the Gwangju Uprising-themed K-drama Youth of May.

Though fans will have to wait for Smugglers to go through all stages of production, RYOO Seung-wan will be back very soon with the action-drama Mogadishu, which completed production early last year and is currently in the final stages of post-production. Shot in Morocco and based on a diplomatic incident in the 1990s, the film also stars ZO In-sung, as well as KIM Yun-seok.

Smuggling will enter production this coming June.

Ryu Seung Wan’s new movie Smugglers (literal title) completed an A-list cast lineup.

On June 11th, NEW announced the fancy cast lineup of its new tentpole movie Smugglers: Kim Hye Soo, Yum Jung Ah, Jo In Sung, Park Jung Min, Go Min Si, Kim Jong Soo, and more. According to their press release, the filming began on the 5th and will continue for the next five months.

Smugglers is an action crime film set in the 1970s in a small, peaceful village by the sea. It centers around the two women who get unexpectedly caught up in a high-stakes smuggling scheme.

Along with the news, NEW also unveiled the photo of the first table read. Not only does a group of A-list stars catches the eye, but the fact that Kim Hye Soo, Yum Jung Ah, and Jo In Sung have gathered for the first time raises the expectations.

On top of that, Time to Hunt actor Park Jung Min, Youth of May actress Go Min Si, and Samjin Company English Class actor Kim Jong Soo have completed flawless chemistry.

Meanwhile, director Ryu will meet the audience this summer with Escape from Mogadishu, starring Kim Yoon Seok and Jo In Sung.

Kim Hye Soo is making her drama comeback with a new period drama.

According to multiple industry insiders, Kim has confirmed her appearances in tvN’s Shuroop. The series follows the queen of Joseon, who must make her troublesome child into a dignified crown prince. “Shuroop” is an ancient term for “an umbrella.” The series deals with the gifted and talented education received by loyal princes of the Joseon Dynasty.

 

Kim Hye Soo plays Im Hwa Ryeong, the mother of a troublemaking prince and the wife of a great king. Rather grumpy and feisty than elegant and graceful, she is a picky and sensitive queen. She used to be calm like a peaceful lake, but she has turned into a raging storm with people who constantly get on her nerves. She is the mother of the dynasty who doesn’t hesitate to curse or abandon her pride if necessary. Her life is already full of troubles, but her kids are the only ones who keep her going.

Kim Hye Soo chose Shuroop as her next step after starring in Hyena last year. It will be her first historical drama in 20 years since Jang Hee Bin in 2002. Secret Door, Second 20s producer Kim Hyung Shik and screenwriter Park Ba Ra will helm the project. Plus, HowPictures will present the series.

Actress Kim Hye-soo, who is marking her 35th year in showbiz this year, never fails to turn heads with her daring fashion choices, radiating both sensuality and elegance.

Kim puts her style on full display at red carpet events. At the annual Blue Dragon Film Awards in February, she wore a white off-the-shoulder dress with black hemlines, giving off a "goddess" vibe. At the same event last year, she drew fans’ attention with a pink off-the-shoulder dress.  At a red carpet event for cable channel tvN's awards in 2016, she got creative in a yellow mermaid long dress and a trench coat.

Her short hairstyle creates a chic flair when combined with all-black outfits, such as the black mermaid midi dress she wore to a press event for her film "The Day I Died: Unclosed Case" in October last year. In 2017, she created a similar feel in a black bell sleeve dress at a press junket for her film "A Special Lady."

Born in 1973, Ryoo Seungwan has been a fan of the no-holds-barred action of Hong Kong action cinema ever since his young age. He was such a fan of the Shaw Brothers and Jack Chan that not only did he take up taekwondo, but he also bought an 8mm camera after saving up for years. After the untimely loss of both his parents when he was still in middle school, Ryoo had to drop out of school to making a living as the young head of his family, doing all kinds of odd jobs. He eventually decided to enter a film workshop and met in 1993 a young Park Chanwook, who would quickly become a close friend. Through his contacts, he managed to work as the director of lighting on one of Bong Joonho’s earlier shorts, <Incoherence>. In 1996, Ryoo made his debut with the short <Transmutated Head> and then took part, as an assistant director and actor, in the film <Trio> (1997), from his friend Park. After his shorts <Rumble> and <Modern Man> respectively won Best Picture at the Busan International Short Film Festival and the Seoul Independent Film Festival, he was offered the opportunity to release an anthology movie made of the two winning films along with two other that he would make for the occasion. Ultimately produced with less than USD 100,000, it was released in 2000 under the title <Die Bad> and was immediately lauded by the critics, who saw in this work all the buoyant energy of amateur films but with the skills of a professional filmmaker to sustain it. Since taking the Korean film scene by storm, Ryoo has been making noteworthy films in the action and thriller genre such as <No Blood No Tears> (2001), <Arahan> (2004), <Crying Fist> (2004), <City of Violence> (2006) and <Dachimawa Lee> (2007), earning the nickname of “Action Kid of the Korean Film Industry”. Ryoo’s pulpy crime thrillers can be characterized by his hard-edged, innovative style with an emphasis on lavishing action sequences. His 2010 film, <The Unjust>, a crime drama that took a sharp observation into corruption in privileged classes of the modern Korean society was met with both critical and commercial success garnering 2.8 million admissions. Three years later, Ryoo was back with <The Berlin File> (2012), a story of four operatives from divided Korea leading clandestine and dangerous lives under covert identities in the German capital. In 2014, Ryoo took part in the 3D horror omnibus <MAD SAD BAD>, which opened the Jeonju International Film Festival in 2014, and filmed his noirish detective thriller <Veteran>, re-teaming with HWANG Jung-min. The latter achieved the biggest commercial success to date for Ryoo, with more than 13 million admissions upon its release in 2015. Next for him was a more ambitious project in terms of scale, with the historical drama <The Battleship Island> (2017) which tells the story of a group of Koreans in their attempt to escape the infamous island of Hashima where the Japanese forced submitted them to forced labor. He then took a back seat to focus on his role as a producer at Filmmaker R & K and worked in such capacities on the occult thriller <SVAHA: THE SIXTH FINGER> (2018) and the disaster comedy <EXIT> (2019). In 2021, Ryoo was back in the director’s chair for <Escape from Mogadishu>, which represented a new challenge for the director as it was entirely shot outside of Korea, in Morocco.

YUM Jung-Ah, born in 1972, was first noticed when she won the title of Miss Korea in 1991. Having always dreamed of becoming an actress, she made her first step in the high school drama series <Our Heaven> (1991). She had her first film role the next year in the melodrama <Jazz Bar Hiroshima> (1992). Although she remained extremely active on the smaller screen for most of the 1990s, she made an unexpected sensation with her starring role as an unsettling mother-in-law in <A Tale of Two Sisters> (2003). A turning point in her career, this allowed her to be known as an actress in her own right and to receive more role offers for the big screen, most notable among them in <The Big Swindle> (2004), <Lovely Rivals> (2004) and IM Sang-soo’s <The Old Garden> (2006). Her performance in the latter was highly praised and resulted in her coming back home from the Baeksang Arts Awards with the Best Actress in Film Award. Following her marriage at the end of 2006, she all but disappeared from the public eye, with the exception of a cameo appearance in CHOI Dong-hoon’s blockbuster time traveling period film <Woochi> (2009). Although she didn’t have many acting credits in 2018, that year proved to be a highlight in her career, as she starred in the sleeper comedy hit <Intimate Strangers> (2018) and headlined TV drama series <Sky Castle> (2018-2019), a satire of the wealthy that transcended all expectations to become a cultural phenomenon and the biggest success for a Korean series on a cable channel, with a rating of 23.8%. YUM was last seen starring in KIM Yun-seok’s directing debut <Another Child> (2018).

Born in 1981, ZO Insung debuted in the show business at an early age, with a first job as a fashion model in 1998. It only took him a year to make his on-screen debut, in the TV series <Jump> (1999), which he followed it up with <School 3> and <Nonstop>. After he was noticed in <Piano> (2001), he scored his first leading role when he was cast in <Shoot for the Stars> (2002). It was however outside of Korea that he moved to film, when he joined <Public Toilet> from Hong Kong director Fruit Chan. Back in Korea, he appeared in Kwak Jaeyoung’s <The Classic> (2003) and the 2004 smash hit drama series <What Happened in Bali>, in which he co-starred Ha Jiwon and So Jisub, with the latter giving him his first accolades. ZO got a major breakout in his acting career playing a fragile, but fearless gangster in the cult classic thriller <A Dirty Carnival> (2006). He later reunited with <A Dirty Carnival> director Yoo Ha for the Goryeo Dynasty-set historical film <Frozen Flower> (2008), about a bitter romance between the king and his bodyguard. After his two years of mandatory military service, Zo decided to serve an additional two year period in the Air Force. His comeback eventually came in 2013, when he starred alongside Song Hyekyo in the drama series <That Winter, the Wind Blows>, but fans had to wait until 2017 to finally be able to see him again on the big screen, in the political thriller <The King> (2017). After starring in the war epic <The Great Battle> (2018), set during the war between the Korean Kingdom of Goguryeo and the Chinese Tang, Zo was cast as a secret agent in Ryoo Seungwan’s blockbuster action <Escape from Mogadishu> (2021).

From Chungju in North Chungcheong Province, Park Jungmin was born in 1987 and attended Korea University and later the Korea National University of Arts. His credits stretch back all the way to 2007, but Park’s unique brand of intensity and subtle characterization was properly recognized when he appeared as one of the leads in the breakout indie <Bleak Night> (2011), a feature production of the Korean Academy of Film Arts and recipient of the New Currents Award from the Busan International Film Festival. The role led to many other big parts in low-budget productions, such as the firebrand antagonist in <Tinker Ticker> (2013), another KAFA production. Around the same time, he was noticed by the mainstream film industry and scored small roles in major productions such as Lee Seokhoon’s romantic comedy <Dancing Queen> (2011), Kang Woosuk’s MMA drama <Fists of Legend> (2012) and Kim Sungsu’s disaster drama < Flu> (2013).

After roles in youth title <Hot Young Bloods> (2013) and the 3D anthology <MAD SAD BAD> (2014), which opened the Jeonju International Film Festival in 2014, Park put in a turn as a slippery young salary worker in horror-thriller <Office> (2014), which was a midnight screening at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015. Park saw his star rise significantly in early 2016, when he wowed critics and viewers as a scene-stealing co-star in Lee Joonik’s low-budget Colonial Era drama <DONGJU; The Portrait of A Poet> (2015), which became a surprise low-budget sensation. His performance was so applauded that he picked up no less than five accolades that award season, most notable among Best New Actor from the Blue Dragon Film Awards and the Director’s Cut Awards, run by an organization representing around 300 directors. In 2016, he appeared in the romantic drama <UNFORGETTABLE> (2015), the horror anthology <Horror Stories III> (2016) and the star-driven crime-thriller <The King> (2016). He then played a mentally disabled man who turns out to be a gifted pianist against Lee Byunghun in the family comedy <Keys to the Heart> (2017), and he also appeared that same year in <Train to Busan> director Yeon Sangho’s follow-up, <Psychokinesis> (2017). After showing his rapping chops in <Sunset in My Hometown>, his second collaboration with Director Lee, and portraying cult fanatism in <SVAHA : THE SIXTH FINGER> (2018), Park was particularly busy in 2019 as he took top billing in the heist thriller <Tazza: One Eyed Jack> (2019) and the comedy <START-UP> (2019), and he appeared in the action film <DELIVER US FROM EVIL> (2019), one of the only success stories in a year afflicted by the Covid-19 pandemic, which also net him the Blue Dragon Award for Best Supporting Actor. Also in 2019, he reunited with the one who launched his career, Yoon Sunghyun, for his sophomore directing effort <Time to Hunt> (2020), which premiered at the Berlinale. In 2020, Park played once again a young genius in the drama <The Miracle> (2020).

Directors Guild of Korea announces this year's 'Bechdel Choice 10'

The Directors Guild of Korea (DGK) announced a list of 10 films on Wednesday which surpassed the Bechdel test that measures appropriate representation of women in fiction.

Titled “Bechdel Choice 10,” the DGK implemented the three criteria of the Bechdel test, also known as the Bechdel-Wallace Test, created by American cartoonist Alison Bechdel which appeared in her comic strip “Dykes to Watch Out For” in 1985.

To pass the Bechdel test, a film must have at least two female characters that are named, they must talk to each other and the subject on the conversation cannot be male characters.

The DGK added four additional categories that fit the needs of contemporary standards to evaluate the films: At least one of the creators behind the scenes, such as the filmmaker, producer, screenwriter and the camera director has to be a woman, the film has to have a female protagonist, or at least have her feature as a main lead in the same proportion as the other male leads, the female characters should not be portrayed stereotypically and should not be averse to any social minorities.

The 10 films selected this year were released between last July to this June. They are “An Old Lady,” (2020), “I Don’t Fire Myself” (2020), “Moving On” (2020), “The Day I Died: Unclosed Case” (2020), “Diva” (2020), “Black Light” (2021), “Samjin Company English Class” (2020), “Whispering Corridors 6: The Humming” (2021), “The Call” (2020) and “Aloners” (2021).

The jurors were filmmakers Kim Dong-ryeong, Shin Ah-ga, Jo Won-hee, actor Bong Tae-gyu, PGK CEO Choi Jung-hwa, women’s studies scholar KwonKim Hyun-young, film critic Ham Yeon-son and producer Lee Dong-ha and screenwriter Lee Bo-ram, whose films both made the list last year.

“As seen from the fact that it was extremely difficult to find films that met all seven criteria, it is obvious that the Korean film industry still has a long way to go to fit the standards of gender equality that this era is demanding,” the judges said in a statement. “However, we were still encouraged to find films — both independent and commercial — that consistently attempt to create inspirational stories and not settle for gender stereotypes.”

“Bechdel Choice 10” is part of the DGK’s annual film event of “Bechdel Day 2021” which will be hosted on Sept. 4. The event was established last year to honor creators who promoted gender equality.
