Weekly K-Pop Music Chart 2014 – March Week 3

Recommended Posts

Despite strong competition from several new songs, Soyu and Junggigo’s duet “Some” refuses to give up the top spot and repeats as No. 1 for the fourth week in a row.  “Some” recorded another win in KBS Music Bank last week and still tops Billboard Korea. It is the first song on our chart to stay at No. 1 for four or more weeks since PSY’s famous hit “Gangnam Style” one and a half year ago.  Congratulations.

As mentioned last week, a trio of big name artists released their new albums and they are storming into the top 10 this week right below the top spot. They will again try to dethrone “Some” for the top spot next week.

Moving up 20 spots to No. 2 is CNBLUE’s “Can’t Stop,” the title song from their fifth mini-album of the same name. Composed by Jung Yong Hwa, “Can’t Stop” is a lyrical rock song.  Jung’s sweet vocals match perfectly with the piano melody in this song full of twists. This song scored a win on MBC’s Show Champion this past week.

Up 13 spots from to No. 3, and just six points below “Can’t Stop,” is Girls’ Generation’s latest hit “Mr. Mr.” This is the title song from their fourth mini-album of the same name and is a dance song with additive R&B sound. The lyrics bring a positive message to the listeners to be strong and confident and not let anyone intimidate them. “Mr. Mr.” has been sweeping music show wins this week and is a strong contender to be No. 1 next week.

Right below “Mr. Mr.” is 2NE1 who has two new songs this week, both are title songs from their second full length album “Crush.”  Moving up 22 spots to No. 4 is “Come Back Home.” Unlike other 2NE1 songs, this song is of electronica genre which is very popular in K-Pop now. However, 2NE1 mixes it with their own R&B, reggae, and hip-hop flavor, making the song a trendy hit to listen to. The trap music in the latter part of the song also makes it very refreshing.

2NE1 also has “Only You” at No. 7, moving up 20 spots this week. This song has an additive R&B hip-hop melody and is closer to the vintage 2NE1 style we are used to. CL’s rap plus Minzy and Bom’s strong vocals are the highlights of this song.  2NE1 will perform this song on SBS Inkigayo for the first time this week.

Besides the comebacks of the above mentioned artists, we also have a fifth new song in the top 10 this week. Moving up 24 spots to No. 6 is veteran rock group Nell’s “Four Times Around The Sun.” This is the title song from Nell’s sixth studio album “Newton’s Apple.” Written by lead singer Kim Jong Wan, it is about a couple who has been together for four years. The drum beat blends well with various instruments in the song.
