Princess Mary of Denmark began her first solo official foreign visit on Thursday, but no doubt felt close to her adopted homeland during her stay. The 34-year-old Aussie, who has up until now accompanied her husband Crown Prince Frederik in his duties, travelled to Prague where she attended a Danish concert and visited several of the Scandinavian country's businesses.

Tasmanian-born Mary seemed perfectly at ease on her trip as she enjoyed the hospitality of the bohemian Czech city. Accompanied by her host, President Vaclav Klau's wife Livia, the stylish brunette packed in the sights during her two-day sojourn.

During a walking tour of the old town, she was able to see first-hand Prague's charming cobbled streets and gothic spires. But it was a boat-ride on the Vltava river, with its famous Charles Bridge, which afforded her the best view of the romantic skyline.

Her arrival happily coincided with the city's twice-yearly International Music Festival. And the princess donned a glamorous orange shift dress to attend an evening concert by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra at the impressive Rudolfinum concert hall.

Friday's schedule also has a patriotic flavour as the mum-of-one visits a Danish bakery in the morning. She is also set to see the beautiful Strahov monastery which houses the Czech Republic's largest monastic library, as well as Prague Castle – founded in the ninth century - where a lunch is to be held in her honour.

Mum-of-one Mary exuded classic elegance as she accompanied her husband Crown Prince Frederik to the Danish Parliament in Copenhagen. The popular royal stepped out in a fitted cream coat simply accessorised with drop pearl earrings for the official occasion, a taupe hat completing her look.

Chic headwear also provided the crowning glory for Mary's mother-in-law, Queen Margrethe. The monarch was in high spirits as she chatted to her son at the opening which traditionally takes place the second Tuesday in October.

Relations between in-laws aren't always cosy but that's clearly not the case between Princess Mary and her husband's mother Queen Margrethe of Denmark. The pair showed off their close bond when both were invited to attend an exhibition of Danish costume history on Monday.

Mary, who was chic in a warm wool suit, seemed delighted to have the chance to spend time with her mother-in-law. After greeting each other with a kiss, the royal pair proved their genuine rapport as they chatted and smiled during the event in Copenhagen's Grudvig Institute.

Later this week the spotlight will be firmly on Mary's son Prince Christian, who will be celebrating his first birthday on Sunday. And the second-in-line to the throne is in for an extra special treat next month when he'll join his parents on his first trip to Australia to visit his mum's homeland.

A palace spokesman has confirmed the family vacation, emphasising it will be "a private visit" and that there will be no official engagements.
