My friend sent me this news article (another scriptwriters' interview) yesterday. I was too busy to translate it yesterday. Just doing this bit on YAI.

In history, when YBW killed Jung Mong-Joo, he was just 26 years old. For now, it's like people who just left army and and went back to study their 3rd year in university, how he thought about changing the country in this age was really surprising. And so, we need to find a young actor, and we contacted YAI. From the time when he did saguek Strongest Chil-Woo in 2008, YAI used the sword well, and was really compatible to saguek. After we contatcted him, we watched YAI's movies the Throne and Veteran and we firmly believed he was right for the role.

유아인씨는 우리가 고민하던 대목에 연기로 그 방향을 알려 준 배우였어요. ‘이야기에 방해되면 내 분량 신경 쓰지 말고 빼세요’란 쿨한 모습에 놀라기도 했고요.”

Through his acting, YAI is the actor who gave us direction on the topics we were troubled about. "If there is any hindrance to the direction of the story, don't think about the weight of my parts, just cut them." We were surprised by his cool attitude.

I copied this last part of the article you posted. I like how Yoo Ah In is so cool about it and just plainly shows how much of a good actor he really is. He is more concern for the story as a whole and not just his own part. Thanks for sharing that article.

I just finished with subs and it left me drained somehow. I think it was because I was so invested in the drama that all my energy seemed to have gone after the final scenes ended. One of the best ending in a k-drama that leaves me satisfied. I know it was a melancholic ending for Boon Yi and Bang Won but still, their romantic story gave off that feeling of forever. It was simply beautiful and nostalgic. I love how the story showed the consequences of having that power but feeling lonely. You can't have it all. The writer was so generous in letting us feel the human side of Bang Won. It was heartwarming.

I cried when Boon Yi embraced Lee Do. It was a very emotional scene and it was like she was able to give comfort to herself and to the little Bang Won that she see in Lee Do. And the scenes that follow were the best closure for this amazing epic drama.

This must be why the first 35 episodes really didn't have much on Yoo Ah In.  A lot of episodes were spent on introducing the rest of the 5 dragons especially Bang Ji’s story.  I actually posted a comment in one the drama beans recap that for 70,000,000 won an episode, Yoo Ah In is definitely overpaid since he’s not appearing much in the beginning and occasionally some episodes of him had less than a handful of scenes.  His unselfishness definitely allowed the writers to flesh out the other characters completely making this more of an ensemble piece than lee bang won.  The weight is actually evened out as he only received the baton towards the end.

I am an admirer of YAI’s works since his early movie days and really jumped on fan wagon after Secret Love Affair.  There’s so much growth in his acting since Sungkyunkwan scandal too... I think if I went back to rewatch that drama I will likely be on second lead ship instead with how much I like him now... he’s just really good.  I can’t think of any actor in their 20s who can really hold a candle to him based on the diversity of characters he’s played, astounding filmography accumulated and his evolvement to become an A-list actor known more for his mad skills than flower boy looks.  Paraphrasing Kim Myung Min’s words, he took on this production because he wanted to work with Yoo Ah In.

If you look at the Blue Dragon Awards last year, how YAI is being treated by cameras, the praises heaped on him by the film industry and contemporaries and juxtapose it to Lee Minho, I’m so proud that he stood there and picked up awards based on his acting skills and not for being a poster boy of CF’s and likely offered some role due to its commercial ability to sell in China (especially) and to teenage girls.  This is not meant to be a diss to LMH but more of a reference to how some actors make their choices instead.  It’s like there's really a huge contrast to actors who act for passion and those that seem to put commercial interest before their craft.

I definitely feel that YAI deserves the commercial and financial success that has come to him as his priorities from the start has always been set in the right foundation.  That is to put out a GOOD production ahead of anything else - self, money, commercialism.

50 episodes done and dusted and it doesn't even feel like 5 months have gone by.

From the production to the story line and of course the cast, everything was done so well! All the actors portrayed their characters so tastefully, I don't feel like anyone was subpar. My stand out was (obviously) Yoo Ah In, the only reason why I decided to commit to this 50 episode long drama in the first place.

+1 I don't know much of the history that propels this drama but again, I felt like  any  fictional elements(Boon Yi, Bang Ji, Moo Hyul) in this drama were done tastefully to the retelling of this period in time. Maybe with the exception of Moo Myung (was interesting for a little bit, then it got meh).

+1 Loved all the prominent female characters! All played an important role, all so strong willed. Constantly fighting to protect what they loved and believed in. Yeon Hee and Chak Sa Gwang (low key major bad richard simmons, low key big softie) were my favourites.

I am going to miss Six Flying Dragons and the roller coaster of emotions it put me on.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Six Flying Dragons" Episode 50 Final

photo704947.jpg

Having whetted our appetite for an epic final fight, "Six Flying Dragons" does not disappoint, providing us with a suitably vicious and climactic battle. Then it drags us down by pointing out the obvious- what's the point of being a supremely powerful swordwielder when a single hero can't win a war, or even their own battles? While Sa-gwang is the more obvious failure, Bang-ji's harsh self-assessment is just as accurate. Little wonder so many of the characters here simply retire here. Until "Deep-rooted Tree" anyway.

But it's Bang-won's self-reflection, as usual, that's the real takeaway. Upon finally gaining the throne, Bang-won rules much the same way he's been running politics lately. He harshly and indiscriminately brutalizes anyone who poses any threat to the power structure. It's good because if Bang-won holds all the power, he can guarantee no one suffers right in front of him. Yet while this arrangement is somewhat better than Goryeo, it lacks ambition. Bang-won has no grand vision or dreams, and that's really rather sad.

Boon-yi, at least, is able to make out a decent living by just having a community she can lead and take care of. Good for her. This is the wavelength she always shared with Bang-won. Yet where Boon-yi is modest, Bang-won thought he could save the world. In absence of a larger threat, Bang-won saves it from itself. It's nice to see how in a certain light Bang-won's flaws weren't really flaws at all, they were just being applied in too high stakes a context.

He did learn something though. Do-jeon, for his own flaws, was proof that a person could have lofty ideals and intellectual insight without necessarily being inflexibly tied to ambition. Bang-won as a father is rather uninspiring, but he makes the critical right decision that sometimes, people deserve to be believed. For all his differences with the other dragons, Bang-won did trust in their ethical scruples, and did not like delegating to them as subordinates.

That's my main overall takeaway from "Six Flying Dragons". While Bang-won may be a capable enough leader on his own, he only truly shined as first among equals. It's sad that the dragons inevitably had to go their own ways, just as it's sad that the ones who survive this drama are destined to be enemies once again in "Deep-rooted Tree". Yet together they were able to forge a new path in history. They were the roots of a golden age- and isn't that, at least, something to be proud of?

Netizens Reaction to #YooAhIn#SixFlyingDragons EP49 #유아인 #육룡이나르샤

Osen - Naver: 'Six Flying Dragons', how it became the pride of public broadcast

1. [+2,773, -45] It's ending today. My Mondays and Tuesdays have been happy thanks to SFD. Great job

2. [+2,330, -52] A drama with no acting hole, the story is solid, the lines are goosebump-inducing, scene stealer stars took part and most importantly, YOO AH IN's acting has been insanely good as Lee Bang Won

3. [+1,892, -47] SFD is such a good drama, I'm so sad to see in go... Actors, thank you for your hard work

4. [+1,709, -63] What will I watch now? ㅜㅜ The drama's at its peak popularity, they should've added 10 more episodes

5. [+380, -13] You know a drama is amazing when you sit through all 50 episodes of it ㅎㅎㅎㅎThe best drama, Lee Bang Won is epic

(SPOILERS) Netizens Reactions on #SixFlyingDragons EP50 Finale #YooAhIn

Xports News - Naver: 'Six Flying Dragons', Yoo Ah In as Lee Bang Won, a king's lonely path

1. [+4,000, -64] Why did I feel sad watching the six dragons' get-together scene in the last part? ㅠㅠ I shouldn't be too attached to a drama but... ㅋㅋ

2. [+3,249, -69] Thank you so much. It takes hard work to produce a masterpiece like this!!!!

3. [+2,991, -68] Lee Bang Won's charm is his hidden tenderness behind his icy nature ㅎㅎ

4. [+2,919, -61] Deep Rooted Tree in SFD's last episode.. Should I watch that again...It's over ㅠㅠ

5. [+2,702, -57] Actors, staff and writers, thank you for your effort. This drama has made me happy. Thanks again

6. [+1,243, -24] The best ending. The young Sejong declaring the same statement as Sambong and Boon Yi represents the six dragons' ultimate intentions. I keep connecting what the invention of Hangul meant to the people at that time to what Sambong said before that it is important for people, especially the ones who are not in trade to learn how to write in order to bring them closer to the Great Cause. Eventually, Sejong ended up building the dream that the dragons weren't able to fulfill. The directing in the final episode is astonishing and breathtaking

7. [+1,026, -21] Now I know the reason why Boon Yi only remained nothing more but a lover to Lee Bang Won. To him, Boon Yi is the embodiment of his beloved people. Like the people, Boon Yi is similar to the wind, something that's impossible to capture ㅠㅠ That aspect is more ardent than the two of them ending up together, it will surely linger on me for long

Sports Today - Nate: 'Deep Rooted Tree's Song Joong Ki's past is SFD's Nam Da Reum?

1. [+392, -13] Nice to see the child Bang Won come back to portray his son ㅋ That kid's such a good actor, he'll definitely grow up handsome ㅎㅎ

2. [+365, -8] The overlap with Deep Rooted Tree and Six Flying Dragons and the actors from before left me in awe... Amazing drama, amazing acting... I'm sending my round of applause. Thank you for creating it

3. [+285, -5] The Daemado Conquest gave me goosebumps

4. [+27, -1] What do I watch now? Hard to believe that a 50-episode drama went too fast

5. [+24, 0] Signal's long gone, SFD is over... Should I watch Deep Rooted Tree again? Hurry up and release season 2 of Signal

6. [+21, 0] When will there be another drama like SFD? This is the first drama that made me feel this way ㅠ I wanna watch the whole thing again

Naver
1. [+190, -14] Best ending out of all the dramas I've seen..

2. [+149, -15] I've always waited for Mon/Tue to watch this. I'm so sad it's over ㅠㅠ SFD thank you!

3. [+138, -12] SFD has been the best these past 6 months

4. [+55, -2] I see some comments bashing Shin Se Kyung but I'm just so thankful to the production team that Baek Jin Hee didn't get the role

@kimchigal2 I can't think of anyone in their 20's too who can portray Bang Won with the same intensity and depth like YAI had amazingly did. There are lots of young good actors but YAI does embrace his characters perfectly and with conviction. I think he likes to play roles that will exhaust all he can give and characters that are shady, [in between hero and villain like characters] and that's where his edge is as a young actor. He has so much to give while personifying this character of Bang Won and we viewers see and appreciate all that.

I also remember LMH and although he has honed his acting skills, and I am a fan, too but I don't think I can compare him to YAI.

I've finally watched Ep 50... it was the ending that I hoped for, done tastefully and beautifully (even though my inner fan girl would still be screaming for an ending with BY happily married to BW somehow, having a trail of kids and living happily ever after, but only fairy tales end that way). But before I go on, I just wanted to post here my thoughts on the last 3 episodes which I posted elsewhere for the sake of closure. For me that is. :)

Episode 47-48

Spoiler

Ok I have watched 47 and 48, and OMG! This drama! It doesn't give you a chance does it? No breathing space at all between all the varying contrasting emotions, like a never ending roller coaster.

YH met her end, and I was happy she's gone. I ached for BJ, but I was actually angry at YH as to the manner of her death. She killed herself to make BJ leave and save JDJ. Even at that juncture her thoughts were only for Sambong and her great cause. Did she not stop to think what it would do to BJ's already fragile emotions and sense of self, for him to see her die that way? I guess she did as an after thought by telling him with her dying breath that it isn't his fault. But did she think it would be enough just to tell him so? I just though she was selfish and senseless and totally insensitive to the end.

In contrast Sambong died with as much dignity as he lived, and I thought it was done so tastefully. I loved too that BW called him Teacher to the end... And I'm sure driving that sword into Sambong's body must have been painful for him too. It was scary to see that almost manic gleam in BW's eye throughout the Strife 1 happenings. Also I wish they changed the actor playing BS to a teenaged actor. In history BS was already 17 and married when he died - and it wouldn't have looked as cruel as it did, with little boy BS begging for his life and BW just literally swinging the sword to cut him down. But I guess it works for dramatic effect.

Still for me the most moving scene is the BW-YG scene where we finally see BW letting down his guard and unable to control the tremble in his hands. So moving how he sought solace in the memory of his hyung YG and how he confided his fear of MH leaving him. That was an immensely powerful scene.

I was also moved by the confrontation between MH and BJ.... Wow. That was some emotionally charged fight. I'm still amazed by all the incredible acting. And that scene between Father and Son... What do you all think? Was BW faking it or did he really mean it that he was willing to accept death at his father's hand? I was moved when he said that death would end his suffering... And really one understands that. He's done all these terrible things because of the sheer ambition and need for power that drove him to it. And yet he has suffered greatly, tamping down whatever morality there was in him that may have stopped him, snuffing down whatever affection he must have had for Sambong and Bang Seok - because we all know he truly respected and hero worshipped his Teacher, and I believe that he did truly have affection for his little brother as well.

Episode 49

Spoiler

And Ep 49!! OMG be still my beating heart! My heart broke during that scene between BY and BW! He asked her to marry him, and she says she will.. and that hurt him so much. Because he knew the old BY who loved him, would never marry him... but this BY standing in front of him, desperate to save the people she cherished, was prepared to do anything to save them. A more selfish, greedy man who only had thoughts of his own needs and feelings, would have grabbed the chance the moment she agreed. After all she finally agreed after all these years... but not BW. Because for all the things that he has become, and perhaps the worm has swallowed him and turned him into a monster of sorts... but this scene was so powerful in revealing to us BW's true nature. The BW who loved genuinely and unselfishly, always putting BY's needs and happiness before his own. He could have kept her beside him, but he did not. Because his love for her was that deep, he let her go.

The two people he cherished were leaving him, and he let them go, because their happiness was too important to him. He only determined to steel himself further in order to bear the loneliness and pain that the path he chose has destined him. And yet they came back to save his life. That ending. BY running desperately to save him, and MH... who despite wanting to leave everything behind, still somehow could not shake off the bond that has been formed between himself and BW. I was moved, deeply moved that despite their differences, when push comes to shove, BW's life is still too precious for them to turn their backs on him

And Episode 50... @oohhkkay, I loved what you wrote about the final episode. Especially about BW seeing the people he missed in his son Yi Do. So meaningful and so apt in a way. I loved how he introduced Yi Do to Mu Hyul.

And you're right about the difference in the look in his eye - when the Queen came to confront him angrily he treated her with such disdain, it was almost sad to see it. At least previously even if they had no love lost between them from the beginning, at least he always greeted her warmly and respectfully. His eyes were always warm toward her, but not in that scene. I also struggled to comprehend his feelings for his son Yi Do in the next scene. In the end I felt that he was also trying to comprehend his son, to make a decision to change the Crown Prince because he was already aware of Yi Do's outstanding intelligence and abilities. I guess the decision was inevitable after seeing the ghosts of those he held near and dear to his heart in his own son - hearing Yi Do utter almost exactly the words of JDJ so many years ago must have been both a shock and a relief to him. It was also heartwarming in the end to see him pat Yi Do's shoulder so affectionately, when we know how he treats his son years later in Tree. Perhaps BW felt he needed to come off cold, to teach his son to strengthen his own heart to face the loneliness of the Throne. It is an evident sign of BW's affection for his son, that he asks Mu Hyul to be his son's protector. Because of course he would know, that Mu Hyul would not only be a bodyguard but also a friend, a father figure and the voice of conscience for Yi Do. It truly truly sheds new light on the fractured father-son relationship we witnessed in Tree.

And then the look in his eyes when he met again first Mu Hyul and then Boon Yi. I could actually feel his loneliness through his entire demeanour, and the warmth he felt for MH and the love for BY was evident just from how he looked at them. Truly this was a master class performance from YAI. I don't know how else to praise him but to say that they should just give him whatever awards left that he hasn't won, because he just truly deserves all the accolades for this career defining role.

Anyway coming back to the drama - I loved that they brought back the side characters from Tree and we get to see BY grow into a distinguished, beautiful old lady - who still only wore that one ornament in her hair. As she told BW that last time they met. They didn't need many words, these two. They understood each other so well always.

I just want to share this comment from Milenda on Dramabeans. If you're here and reading this, I hope you don't mind. Because I think it's perfect, and beautifully written.

The show to me is about metaphors. Though I read many posts that criticized the fictional love story between Bangwon and the fictional Boonyi (many in favor of real life Lady Min)… Boon Yi has always represented the common people. If you read on Taejong’s history profile and on wiki, he was a ruthless ruler who killed many nobles and family to subsist the throne but he was also effective in improving the lives of the common folk. Hence this metaphor was written so well and weaved as a love story instead. Lee Bang Won’s eternal and greatest love is his people

Lee Bang Won’s eternal and greatest love is Boon Yi, and therefore invariably that would mean his people. Perfect!

SFD writers Interview (Finale)

“Our next project may be King Sejo.”

March 22, 2016  [source]

tumblr_inline_o4hglmykWy1s5yhgo_540.jpg

Kim Young-Hyeon (left) and Park Sang-Yeon (right)

● Six Flying Dragons (SFD) is the prequel to Tree with Deep Roots (TWDR). It was the first time in South Korea to produce a prequel TV drama. Was there pros and cons while you were writing the prequel?

It was our aspirations and adventurous attempt as a writer. As we have six main characters, the emotion of at least 15 characters should be handled in one episode. If we follow all of them, the drama’s pace can not help but slow down. It was too bad to skip the emotion of so many characters.

But it also has pros. We already knew where to go. “Milbon (Hidden Roots) should be created. Moo-Hyul should become Yi Do’s bodyguard. Jung Do-Jeon should be killed at one point. Boon-Yi should go back to Banchon. Ms. Dodam should appear…etc.” It was like putting the puzzle together?

At the same time, it felt like stepping into the ring with both hands tied. In the case of Tree with Deep Roots, we filled the blank with our imagination because of lack of data about the creation of Hangul (Korean alphabets). However, the history in SFD had so much detailed information like Wihwa island retreats, Jo Min-Soo, Choi Young that there was no room to insert our imagination. In a word, it was like a game with complex rules.

● Moo-Hyul is the character who goes through both TWDR and SFD. He left Yi Bang-Won and retired to his hometown, but he would become the closest bodyguard to King Sejong the Great. Why did Moo-Hyul leave Yi Bang-Won? And what’s the difference between Yi Bang-Won and King Sejong?

Moo-Hyul is the most ordinary commoner in SFD. Even if he hopes for success, he hates to do an evil thing and finds his worth from his work. He was fascinated by Yi Bang-Won in the beginning, but he must be suffering as Yi Bang-Won kills more and more people. Yi Bang-Won is a man of a great cause, and it is too much for an ordinary commoner like Moo-Hyul to follow him.

If Yi Bang-Won is a ruler of blood and iron, King Sejong is a ruler of humanities. Both of them have a great cause, but King Sejong has a warm heart like an ordinary man. That’s why Moo-Hyul was better off with King Sejong.

● Yi Bang-Won and Jung Do-Jeon in SFD show different interpretations from other historical dramas. What interpretation inspired you to create such characters?

In terms of the description of Yi Bang-Won, we added, rather than concealed or downsized, his cruel and ruthless deeds. For example, there is no historical record that Yi Bang-Won set fire to Dumoon-dong village or killed his half brother Bang-Seok with his own hands. Nonetheless, I heard from many people that they got to root for Yi Bang-Won. It is true that we started it with “Don’t hate Yi Bang-Won” but we never intended to glamorize him. He was just… a person with exceptionally strong will to power, and renounced the small in order to secure the great.

Sambong Jung Do-Jeon and Poeun Jung Mong-Joo had a mindset of Sadaebu scholars. Jung Do-Jeon’s position is like this. As the turbulent times are a crying evil, he should accept to use a scheme for political purpose. But he has constantly felt internal conflicts about it. It is a kind of his indecisiveness. Even though he is wielding absolute power, even though he is already aware of the danger Yi Bang-Won will cause, he can’t nip him in the bud early on.

There were fierce fights among Sadaebu in that period. When Jung Do-Jeon and Jung Mong-Joo attacked their opponents, they made ugly personal attacks on each other without any reserve. Instead, they didn’t go as far as to kill the opponent easily because they belonged to the intelligentsia. They fought within the system by using impeachment, which was in stark contrast to Yi Bang-Won who was beyond the rules. Therefore, they might seem to be pettier than Bang-Won in TV viewers’ eyes.

● Is there similarities and differences between Jung Do-Jeon in SFD and Jung Gi-Joon in TWDR?

We got to know about Jung Do-Jeon in the process of writing TWDR. Jung Do-Jeon was a great politician who founded “Joseon led by Sadaebu scholars”. While Goryeo was a stereotypical kingdom, Joseon was a nation based on the new frame created by Jung Do-Jeon. Therefore, if Jung Do-Jeon lost the power struggle, Joseon couldn’t exist at all.

However, although Milbon (Hidden roots) was supposed to have an intention to improve Sadaebu constantly, its original purpose had been tarnished over the time. Jung Do-Jeon wrote in the letter “Don’t fight for the sake of the dead” but his last will was crushed and thrown away by Bang-Ji. That’s why Milbon had become the revengeful and closed organization in TWDR.

Furthermore, the conflict between Jung Gi-Joon and King Sejong (in TWDR) was ideological confrontation. However, the conflict between Yi Bang-Won and Jung Do-Jeon (in SFD) is not ideological strifes. Of course they fight over which side should have an authority over the state affairs between king and ministers. But it is just brought about by their different position. If Yi Bang-Won had not been part of a royal family, he would have sided with the prime minister’s authority.

● There are pros and cons about historical drama. As a writer, what is your biggest concern in terms of viewers’ reponses?

Jo Min-Soo’s “bloody banquet”. In the history, Jo Min-Soo disappeared quietly. However, we couldn’t believe that he disappeared so quietly in such a turbulent age of warriors. We thought he was likely to clash with Yi Seong-Gye. We wanted to describe the clash between the haves and the have-nots on the land issue. That incident brought about the collapse of the haves (Jo Min-Soo, hereditary peers). We worried about criticism from Jo Min-Soo’s descendants because there is no historical record about it, but thankfully we received a positive response from them.

● I wonder why Cheok Sa-Gwang appeared. What is her role in this drama?

We claimed from the beginning that SFD would become a political martial arts drama. Cheok Sa-Gwang was necessary for martial arts plots. She is a person on the peak of warriors’ world, an absolute master. She is a sad character with a mild temper. She didn’t want to learn martial arts, but became the strongest master. Gil Tae-Mi was the same. He was an absolutely powerful martial artist with thick makeup.

● In this drama, what character do you feel the strongest affinity for?

We feel affinity for every one of them. If we have to choose, it would be “common people”. They were as important as Yi Bang-Won and Jung Do-Jeon. We wanted to show their power to live through the turbulent times and survive in the end.

Bang-Ji, Moo-Hyul, and Boon-Yi is the representatives of the “common people”. Boon-Yi represents the character who endures to save people and lives through til the end. Bang-Ji represents the one who has deep sorrow and pain in his heart. Moo-Hyul seems to live more comfortably than them, but he represents the ordinary commoners. They are fictional characters, but we wanted to make a good description of them along with the historical figures.

● Is there any supporting actor who conveyed the writers’ intentions very well?

Gil Tae-Mi and Jo Young-Gyu. We thought SFD’s success would depend on whether Gil Tae-Mi could become the talk of the town within the first 4 episodes. As a veteran actor, Park Hyeok Gwon played Gil Tae-Mi far more brilliantly than we had expected. In addition, Jo Young-Gyu who was killed by Cheok Sa-Gwang was played really well as an emotional trigger between Bang-Won and Moo-Hyul.

● Some people regard Six Flying Dragons and Tree with Deep Roots as the reinterpretation of Joseon Dynasty. Give us a hint about your next project.

We don’t have any plan yet. The future remains unclear. However, if we make it, the title would be “The water from a deep spring (샘이 깊은 물)” from “Songs of the dragons flying to heaven (용비어천가 龍飛御天歌)” It is likely to handle King Sejo’s usurpation of the throne (계유정난 癸酉靖難, October 1453).

* Songs of the dragons flying to heaven (용비어천가 龍飛御天歌)
http://bodashiri.tumblr.com/post/128099683001/the-origin-of-six-flying-dragons

Canto I
Six Flying Dragons in Haedong (the east of the Sea = Korea)
Everything they did was blessed by Heaven
Their pasts coincide with ancient sages.

Canto II
A tree with deep roots,
Because the wind sways it not,
Blossoms Abundantly
And bears fruit.
The water from a deep spring,
Because a drought dries it not,
Becomes a stream
And flows to the sea.

It is a tragedy. There would be no good person here. All of them would be villains. King Sejo and Han Myeong-Hoe. Even though King Sejo was a precious son of King Sejong, he turned his coat after becoming King, and all the academic lines established by King Sejong died out during his reign. Unlike his grandfather King Taejong (Yi Bang-Won), he was swayed by contributors who helped him to ascended the throne. Compared with him, King Taejong (Bang-Won) was a far greater ruler. Yi Bang-Won removed his retainers ruthlessly for his son, King Sejong. Han Myeong-Hoe is a turncoat of Milbon (Hidden Roots).

However, there is no good person for viewers to sympathize with. That’ s the problem. In the end, the viewers can’t help but watch their fights in a third party perspective. Such a drama has never been successful in Korea. Therefore, if we really try it, it will be a risky attempt.

Even in the tree when BW is treating Yi Do  harshly, they is no doubt he had great affection between father and son and was only raising him that way  because of the responsibility of wearing the crown and ruling the country.

They are two examples in the tree that showed BW's love for Yi Do, the first was after BW threatens Yi Do with  a sword in the forest and Yi Do in return commands MH to kill BW if he is killed by BW, on the way back BW was telling JMS about Yi Do's great insight to know that he can only be persuaded with force and not by words from scholars in the books.

In another scene when BW was chatting with Yi Do on the type of Joseon, Yi Do plans to build, after BW get his answer, he tells Yi Do that putting him on the throne is going to be his greatest achievement.

After 5 long months, the drama has finally come to an end. Such bittersweet ending to be honest.

Wow, where do I begin?

Oh yes, my tears came crashing down when they put all the six dragons' credit in the end. I had a wishful thinking that they'd shoot one final scene where all the six dragons are in one place, talking and smiling to each other (just like how they used to before Team Bangwon VS Team Sambong came into the picture), just reminiscence about their past. Oh well, can't be too spoiled now for SFD's writer has spoiled me too much. lol.

Major props to the two writers for such compelling scripts and storyline for this. And the actors. And crew members. Just every single SFD crew cause without any of them, it wouldn't have been as amazing as it is. Major shoutout to their garments tailors/designers though, cause damn guys, they all look amazing!

Through watching SFD alone, I gained a lot; I get to learn new historical facts (thanks to Homura especially, for without you, I might not get that very in depth information about all that happened in SFD. Thank you Homura!). I learn that, from time to time again in SFD, human is without flaws and we succumb to our human/worldly desires despite how noble our intention towards the world is. It makes me reflect myself from time to time again, of the desire I have right now and how it'll affect my future. Maaan, thanks SFD for that. LOL.

And last but not least, I had fun discussing and reading all the replies in this forum. Despite our differences in ideas, I gained knowledge and got to see things in different perspectives, so thank you everyone for being such wonderful sport for just being Team SFD! My deepest apology if I've offended any of you with my post too. I'm sorry! :(

Not sure what will top SFD for now, well at least for me, so I think we might go into a very deep SFD-withdrawal symptom until a great drama comes along. lol. Descendant of The Sun seems to be very interesting, but I think my emotion is pretty drained by SFD for now so I shall put that show on hold first until I regained what SFD has suck out of me. I have yet to watch TWDR too though, so am going to watch that first I think. Haha.

Til' then guys!
Much love!
