Will ‘Descendants of the Sun’ have a happy ending?

With only two episodes left for the popular drama “Descendants of the Sun,” viewers are wondering if the series will have a happy ending where the two main couples -- Song Joong-ki-Song Hye-kyo and Jin Goo-Kim Ji-won -- end up together happily ever after.

In the latest 14th episode that was aired Thursday, special forces Capt. Yoo Si-jin, played by Song Joong-ki, suffered a cardiac arrest following a deadly gun fight while on a mission. However, Yoo miraculously survived with the help of Dr. Kang Mo-yeon, played by Song Hye-kyo.

“I am sorry to make you worry, and thanks for saving me,” Yoo told Kang.

“I watched on the news today about the peace you protected. But if you are really sorry, please don’t turn up again covered with blood,” Kang said.

Kang sincerely took care of Yoo and near the end of the episode, the two decided to watch a film together inside a hospital room, sitting on the hospital bed. It was a film that the two were planning to watch together a number of times on previous dates but couldn’t.

But they both fall asleep while watching. “I don’t know who fell asleep. It was an exhausting and long day and I was by his side,” Kang said in a voice-over narration. “I lay down and I sparkled, just like a woman being loved. I wonder whether the film, we could not finish, had a happy ending or a sad ending.”

After the episode, the teaser trailer of the next episode was released, featuring Yoo heading to somewhere far again on a mission, and his fellow soldier delivering an unknown, serious news to Kang, indicating something had happened to Yoo.

The uncertain narration and trailer is sparking a lot of speculation about the ending among viewers. “I am still nervous, but I am sure it will be a happy ending because Yoo already survived death many times,” one viewer said.

Another couple Seo Dae-young, played by Jin, and Yoon Myung-joo, played by Kim, decided to break-up after facing another obstacle and for the better of each other. The two are no longer together, but still think earnestly of each other.

“Descendants of the Sun,” airs Wednesday and Thursday at 10 p.m. on KBS2 network.

SEOUL, April 8 (Yonhap) -- South Korean TV series "Descendants of the Sun" has topped 10 billion in the accumulated number of searches for the show on Weibo, the Chinese equivalent of Twitter.

As of Friday morning, the drama depicting a romance between a soldier (Song Joong-ki) and a doctor (Song Hye-kyo) in a fictional war-torn country in the Mediterranean has been searched 10.3 billion times, the largest, on Weibo.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Descendants of the Sun" Episode 14

 

For the second time in its fourteen-episode run "Descendants of the Sun" has experienced a ratings drop. It came in at 33.0%, 0.5% decrease. Perhaps it is the fact that the glamour and excitement of the foreign country was no longer present. Perhaps it was the broaching of the sensitive North/South Korea conflict that is more tense than ever. Perhaps it was just the simple fact that the cliffhanger wasn't really a cliffhanger despite the fact that the show only has a week left (save for the bonus goodies to be offered after its run.)

The strongest part of the episode was the relationships, namely the friendships. There is the forbidden friendship between Si-Jin and Ahn Jung-joon (Ji Seung-hyeon). The layful, but devoted, friendship of comrades Dae-yeong and Si-jin. There is the friendship turned love between Doctor Song and Nurse Ha. Mo-yeon's friendship with the doctor in the wheelchair. The romances are afterthoughts save for Si-jin's and Mo-yeon's. This episode explores true friendship and love: accepting people for everything they are. Between Si-jin and Jung-joon, it was respecting each other as soldiers and their mutual allegiance to their respective countries.

Their friendship also alludes to the bigger issue of the divided Koreas and how there is an extremely close history between them. A shared language. A once shared land. Torn families. Si-jin and Jung-joon respect that and each other. It was not intended, but the current political landscape between North Korea, China, and the world makes this episode especially poignant. Just as the military aspect of this drama rings true for so many Koreans, the inclusion of North Korean tensions will as well.

Let's now turn to what made absolutely no sense whatsoever. Si-jin was shot. Even if he had a bullet-proof vest on, he still suffered his heart stopping, loss of blood, and probably a concussion. Yet somehow he sits up, walks around, goes on missions, and he doesn't show any fatigue, pain, or the inability to move parts of his body to to injury. I don't blame Song Joong-ki, but the director. What was that, Director Lee? Some of the politicking was shady as well. I suppose it is to be expected of dramas. Many fields are misrepresented. So let's leave that and get to the funny stuff.

Si-jin and Dae-yeong have such a delightful friendship in that they mock each other, support each other, laugh at each other. Dae-yeong does it all with a straight face. It's fabulous stuff. I also loved that the usual fight between women, the pulling of hair, was turned into a symptom of Chi-hoon's fiancee's contractions. Such a lovely use and subversion of a K-drama trope.

Mo-yeon and Si-jin get to test out their new relatinship parameters: she supports him in his dangerous work, and he tries not to worry her despite the fact that his truths are scary. I liked the push and pull of their relationship. It makes it so natural.

I'm curious to see where they take this in the last week. It could try to pack too much into it in terms of action, or they could focus on the relationships, which is the juicy good stuffs of "Descendants of the Sun".

‘Descendants of the Sun’: more fantasy than reality

Lee Soo-yeon, a 27-year-old office worker in Seoul, can’t get enough of “Descendants of the Sun,” the ongoing Korean drama series that features a military romance between a solider and a surgeon. 

“I think the series has many things that I can’t really see or achieve in my real life, such as the sense of justice, responsibility and altruism,” she told The Korea Herald. “And on top of all that, it is just very romantic.”

The 16-episode series takes place in a fictional war-torn Mediterranean country named Uruk, and features the story of special forces Capt. Yoo Si-jin, played by heartthrob Song Joong-ki. 

He is in charge of mysterious and dangerous peacekeeping duties and falls for an army surgeon, Kang Mo-yeon, played by A-list actress Song Hye-kyo. 

While the series garnered avid followers in Korea and abroad, even being cited as a tremendous economic and tourism booster, the enormous popularity of the military romance ironically reflects what today’s Korean society lacks, critics say.

“I think the character played by Song Joong-ki is great. He’s capable, courageous and has a sense of integrity,” said activist Lim Tae-hun, who heads the Military Human Rights Center -- an advocacy group calling for human rights reforms in the Korean military. “The only thing is that it’s almost impossible for a soldier like him to exist in South Korea’s military system.”

While the fictional character Yoo in the show enjoys special comradeship with his fellow soldiers, Lim said such military relationships were far from the reality, where suppressive military culture prevails and cases of abuse by soldiers are frequently reported. 

“I’d say there is just no sense of dignity in the Korean military,” Lim said. “You don’t have any privacy. There is a strict hierarchy within the system. You don’t have the option of quitting while serving your military duty, unless you are willing to become an ex-convict.” 

An able-bodied man refusing to perform his service leads to a jail term of one year in South Korea. Military duty is often therefore perceived as an inevitable obligation rather than a heroic deed.

Other experts pointed out that the series promotes patriarchal values and nationalism. The series even won praise from President Park Geun-hye, who recently said the show could help “instill patriotism” among young Koreans. Patriotism is the Park administration’s most prioritized value, with such high-ranking officials as Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-ahn trumpeting all government-led policies as being based on the love for the country. 

Acerbic critics of the series also note that the dialogues often reflect deeply embedded discrimination, which in another language would likely sound downright offensive.

In her column published last month, film critic Hwang Jin-mi pointed out that the character Yoo often makes sexist comments. 
“He says, ‘it is my duty as a solider to protect children, the elderly and pretty women,’” she writes in the column published in a local daily. “Why does it have to be ‘pretty women,’ instead of just ‘women’?”

Hwang also addressed in the column that while the surgeon Kang is seemingly depicted as an independent, capable woman who offers medical relief to disaster victims in Uruk, she is always rescued by Yoo whenever she is in a life-threatening situation. 

To Hwang’s comments, culture critic Lee Moon-won said the series in fact specifically targets female viewers, not the other way around. 

“Most Korean men -- especially those who have served their military duties -- don’t want to watch TV drama series that feature men in military uniforms,” he said. 

“Most of them don’t find any joy in watching fellow men being trained in the military. It’s the kind of experience that they’d rather not be reminded of. I argue that the series fulfills fantasies of female viewers, especially the one of physically strong men in uniforms who are also extremely caring and romantic at the same time.”

Critic Lee however said the show does reflect Korea’s situation of gender imbalance which makes women more vulnerable to financial insecurity and unemployment.

“I think patriarchal men can be seen as attractive to female viewers when they are exceptionally capable, physically strong and responsible,” he said. 

“Given today’s sluggish economy and job market, it’s hard to find such (everyday supermen) who have those qualities whether they are patriarchal or not. I think the popularity of such strong, male military characters in the show reflects women’s collective insecurity and anxiety.”

Just watched with subs. 

I have long not cared for plots in this drama, because I see this as a character driven one, so this NK arc, and whatever that will follow, I do not really mind. And even if the medical inaccuracies are somewhat so glaring in this episode, I looked past it, because... I didn't watch this for the medical stuff, but then a little discernment or research from the writer in that department probably would not hurt, this is pre-produced, after all. Okay, I am trying to look past it. Lol.

I have always loved Mo Yeon, always praised her as she is one tough and thinking cookie, and she really shined in this episode, more than Si Jin, despite the superhuman strength lol, and that's probably why at first blush, or should I say, without watching with subs as @staygold intimated, most of us, found it hard empathising with Si Jin in this episode. Oddly enough, when I first saw the stairwell scene, I wanted Si Jin to at least show a bit of affection towards Mo Yeon, like hug her or something to show his thanks or appreciation despite the chaos that he is in, and after watching it with subs, I say, this was favourite bit of the episode. Why? Because Si Jin recognised Mo Yeon's bravery and that amounts to more than kisses and hugs or fan service in my opinion, and I am very much a sucker for screaming subtleties like this. It showed that Si Jin knows how lucky he is to have her, and that shows he regards her very highly and he is proud of her, in effect, reflecting Si Jin's character as well. Mo Yeon in that moment, where she was all giddy and excited to be "working for the nation" reminded me of my favourite female character in kdramaland, Song Ji Na's Chae Young Shin in Healer, she would react that way whenever she would be doing Healer stuff, and would feel that she is contributing something. I know Mo Yeon's face probably didn't show it, but I feel she feels pretty proud of herself as well. 

 

Another part sends another great message. Learning to value the person that you are with. Real life couples get to do normal things, and if you are with someone whom you can be thankful for in manners not involving risking their lives for yours or for others, then consider yourself lucky. However, at the same time, we saw how Mo Yeon really values Si Jin's work even if they do not have the normalcy that normal couples have. 

 

 

 

 

But characters' relationships aside, I am glad that this drama managed to stay relevant with the goings on in this world, and it does not matter whether it was romanticised or glamourised or what not, as long as it sort of put out there that terrorism, human trafficking, and war is happening right now, especially at a time where most would rather be apathetic or cynical in regard to these issues, and add their country's issues as regards the North and South, to the list that this drama has tackled. We should appreciate dramas like this.

Oh, and my reaction to whatever it is that is going on between Myeong Ju and Dae Young:

I'm new to this forum and am probably going to make a few posting mistakes so sorry about that in advance!! 

THANK YOU for posting all the updates and recaps and reviews. I agree that the episode seems to be slightly off and different from what DOTS was like for the past 12 episodes, but I think we will resume to that kind of mood in the last two. Love the scene in the hospital so much heheee especially when Dae Young thinks he can get away with pretending he's Si Jin?? 

@larienssi omg I love your take on this episode - I was so into the episode that it didn't really occur to me he was acknowledging her bravery and yes I agree, that's way more impactful than hugs and kisses.

Welcome back Soompi home. I've missed you so much.

I like the last dialogue between YSJ and KMY, when KMY refused to lay on patient bad near YSJ (to me it was not a brilliant idea  of her) and YSJ is scolding so nicely about wounding his feelings with refusal to lay near him and his disability to do anything  but walk for fresh air on the roof of another building to visit the department store  .

But now I am afraid of next episode. It seems to me, that Woo Geun brought bad news. I hope everyone will stay alive.
