It's the biggest sales week for an artist since Eminem's The Eminem Show logged 1.322 million copies during its second week back in June 2002.
What's more, Swift has become the only artist to have three million-selling weeks with an album in the history of the US chart, reports Billboard.
The star's previous album Red sold 1.208 million copies during its first week in 2012, while 2010's Speak Now achieved 1.047 million opening sales.
The massive sales of 1989 makes it the second highest selling album of 2014 in the US after one week on sale. It's currently behind the Frozen soundtrack, which has sold 3.2 million copies in the US this year.
The impressive sales also follows Swift's decision to withhold 1989 from being available to stream on services such as Spotify and Deezer, while also removing her back catalog from the platform.
Meanwhile, Swift has announced plans for a world tour to accompany 1989, which includes a string of dates across North America, as well as a large show in London's Hyde Park as part of British Summer Time 2015.
