A new food variety show program directed by Na Young-seok, who is famous for the megahit “2 Days & 1 Night” and “Over Flowers” series, will launch on Friday amid soaring attention from viewers.
The cable television network tvN showcased the program “Three Meals in a Day” on Wednesday, with the main actors and producers Na and Park Hee-yeon in attendance.
In the show, actor Lee Seo-jin and Ok Taecyeon, a member of the K-pop boy band 2PM, prepare their own meals using local ingredients from the countryside. The two men, who seem disinterested in rural life and cooking, have to struggle to feed themselves, and this leads to various comic situations.
In his appearance on the former variety show “Grandpas over Flowers,” Lee said several times that he “hates” cooking while preparing meals for the four senior actors acting as grandpas.
In contrast to Lee’s grumbling about cooking in the new program, Ok will be depicted as a man with a passion for preparing food, tvN officials said.
“He has a totally different character from Lee. He is very passionate, actively participating every time. That contrast between the two will create laugher,” producer Park said.

After ‘Grandpas,’ new show presents slice of rural life
BY SUNG SO-YOUNG Inside Korea JoongAng Daily

“Three Meals a Day,” the newest collaboration between “Grandpas over Flowers” cast member Lee Seo-jin and its producer, Na Young-seok, is sure to appeal to many viewers.
In contrast to his role as a grumpy tour guide escorting a group of senior actors in their 70s around Europe in the candid reality show, Lee will be one of two good-looking city boys forced to survive in rural Korea with cameras in tow.
Along with singer and actor Ok Taecyeon, actor Lee adapts to life in Jeongseon, Gangwon, where the two will have to feed themselves with only home-grown vegetables cooked with man-powered tools.
The production team of the new show held a press event yesterday in Yeouido, western Seoul, prior to airing the show.
Producer Na and the two actors participated in the event and shared some details about what viewers can expect.
Ok is a member of the boy group 2PM but has recently been seeking to get into acting.
Lee and Ok appeared in the same drama series as brothers earlier this year.
“The Grandpas series was a long project,” said Na. “It took me more than two years from the inception of the show until its end.”
Na is currently a star producer in Korea. His name is often used as a surefire way of attracting viewers to a show, especially people in their 20s, 30s and 40s.
“I just wanted to work on a lighthearted show that can highlight the small pleasures of life,” said Na, “and the premise of the show is pretty simple. I wanted to talk about a meal that is made with vegetables from my garden and have these two guys share their homely foods with their friends.
“The main concept is that it is a cooking show but with no mouth-watering foods because these two guys can’t cook.”
Na said the new show was inspired by Lee after he saw that the actor was terrible at cooking during the filming of “Grandpas.”
Lee had to whip up occasional Korean dishes for the grandpas in his hotel room while traveling around Europe.
But since he knows nothing about preparing food, according to Na, he complained continuously while he was cooking that the producer had forced him to do it.
Although Na said that there are no crises or dramatic moments in his new program, it seems like it will have plenty of catchy elements to keep the audience hooked.
“Each week, we have guests from Seoul, and then we have to serve them,” said Lee. “But we have nothing other than vegetables and rice. Then we earn meat from the production team. In return for that, we have to harvest a huge amount of sorghum [a type of grain] in front of the house. We’re living like slaves.”
Ok, who went to college in the United States, just like Lee, also complained about life in the country.
“All I want is a set of pots. We cook everything using a huge gamasot [a huge iron cauldron], but it is way too heavy, even for me,” said the 26-year-old well-built entertainer.
“The pot itself weighs more than 10 kilograms [22 pounds] and when it contains food, the weight goes beyond 15 kilograms.”
With use of the cauldron, the two men even make homemade ricotta cheese from the milk of Jackson, a goat they raise, for their first guests.
For the visitors, they also grind coffee beans using a maetdol, or a stone food grinder that has been in use since ancient times. The maetdol is a multipurpose grinder, used for breaking down everything from peppers to coffee beans.
Along with Jackson, the milky white goat, Lee and Ok live with five hens and a white pooch on the show.
The first episode of “Three Meals a Day” will hit TV screens on Friday at 9:50 p.m. on tvN.

‘Ok Taecyeon has rustic charm‘

(OSEN)
TV show producer Na Yeong-suk said Wednesday that 2PM member Ok Taecyeon‘s rustic charm led him to single out the pop idol to be a main charactor for his new variety program “Three Meals in a Day.”

“Although he has this handsome appearance, he ,when cameras away, immediately turns into like a country boy with rustic smells. Because of his rustic charm I selected him to play for my new variety show,” said Na.

Na, who is famous for “One Night Two Days” and “Over Flowers” series, made the remarks in a showcase event for the new tvN program that will launch on Friday.

“When I didn’t know him, Lee Seo-Jin, who used to speak ill of others, praised Ok a lot, it was not usual thing,” the producer added. Lee is a Korean actor who acted in the KBS drama “Wonderful Days” with Ok and will reunite with the idol for this new program.

“After knowing him, I found he is completely different from other idols, he shuffles his clothes on, and leaves for a travel any time taking selfies (on a trip) without caring other people’s eyes,” he said.

During the press conference, Lee Seo Jin shared that he was in charge of prepping the ingredients and Taecyeon did most of the cooking out of the big iron cauldron. He added that Taecyeon is studying cooking like his life depends on it.

When asked if he learned more about cooking, Taecyeon replied, “I didn’t learn anything particularly new. I’m cooking as I always do. We filmed once or twice, but we always cook rice with the cauldron.”

After saying that the cauldron is too heavy, Taecyeon asked the staff if they could buy him a set of pots, bringing laughter in the hall.

“I’ve gotten really good about cooking rice in the cauldron. It’s all about adjusting the water and fire levels,” explained Taecyeon, going into detail how much water is needed and when to lower the heat in the fire pit. “

MC Park Ji Yoon then commented in amazement that she never dreamed of learning how to cook rice in a cauldron from an idol group member.

Working hard under the sun to feed the family, Lee Seo Jin said he wants to invite the 2PM members to tvN’s Three Days

On October 15, Lee Seo Jin, 2PM’s Taecyeon, producers Na Young Seok, and Park Hee Yeon attended the press conference for tvN’s Three Meals at the 63 City Convention Center in Yeouido.

Lee Seo Jin Wants 2PM to Appear as Guests on ‘Three Meals’ to Help with the Harvest

Having worked with Producer Na Young Seok before and suffered under his directions, Lee Seo Jin shared that Three Meals was harder to film than Grandpas Over Flowers

Lee Seo Jin explained that on the show, if he and Taecyeon receive food or any help from the staff, they go in debt and must pay it back by harvesting sorghum.

“Just like a slave’s debts continue to rise despite how much work he does, our debts are also increasing. Whenever I have time, I’m trying to harvest sorghum,” said Lee Seo Jin.

When asked who he would like to invite on the show, Lee Seo Jin answered the 2PM members so that they can help decrease the debt.

Taecyeon then pointed out that their debt might actually grow, since the 2PM members will probably want to eat meat after they work.

Taecyeon goes on a wild goose chase on the first airing of tvN's 'Three Meals a Day'

Taecyeon_1413561466_20141017_threemealsa
On October 17, tvN aired the first episode of 'Three Meals a Day,' featuring Taecyeon and Lee Seo Jin where the two were thrown into a countryside house and given the mission of eating three meals a day.
Three meals a day sounds easy on the surface, however, there was a catch. The challenge was that the only ingredient that the producers themselves would provide was rice and the cast members had to prepare their side dishes with the ingredients they found around the house. The menu will be then chosen by the producers.

Another condition was that in order to live a fully organic and an analogue lifestyle, the producers took away their cell phones for the duration of the filming. However, they were allowed to use the provided landline phone.
Taecyeon and Lee Seo Jin were given the mission to make fermented sliced radish kimchi. Confused and oblivious on how to make radish kimchi, Taecyeon decided to call his mother for help.
While using the landline phone and without his mother's contact information stored on the cell phone, Taecyeon realized that he didn't know his mother's number and had to go on a wild goose chase trying to find the number. He first called 114 (similar to 411 information directory) and asked for JYPE's office number. When he called the office, he received a busy message stating that they could not reach the phone at this time.
The idol then muttered disappointingly, "They're not answering..But I don't know my mom's number..."
