said: oh no, don't watch the entire thing…Trot Lovers as a drama was awful (sorry, no offense to those who loved it)…i only watched certain parts, like with Shin Sung Rok in them and some of the music parts.  He was so funny and also an oddball, quirky character w/o the psycho element in Liar Game.  Too bad he was the second male lead, wanted him to end up with the main female lead.  Anyway, how is Angel Eyes so far?  I want to watch it too, but it seems a lot of episodes

I found it absolutely hilarious that the best villain role is tied between Shin Sung Rok..... and Shin Sung Rok (last time I checked it was 37%)
pwahahhaha

that man can make evil look good.... ~~~

I didn't know SSR could sing though. Might have to check out a few clips out of curiosity…oh yes, please do…u won't regret it.  He's born for musicals too!  he did a musical for the Count of Monte Cristo and i was blown away by his heavenly voice.  I felt like everyone in Liar Game did such a fantastic job, but SSR really excelled here. I thought he was good in My Love From the Stars, but goodness... his performance here... Speechless. I concur! but i hope he doesn't get typecast.  I would love to see him play a lead role as a hero too who gets the girl in the end.

I actually really love a good melodrama (me too…Nice Guy/Innocent Man is my all-time favourite melodrama, but others that i've watched have gone OTT for me), so I don't know how much you can trust my opinion on Angel Eyes. I'm on episode 6 right now and it's totally rocking my socks off so far, but I heard that it's really like the last four or five episodes that dragged the entire drama down. Since I haven't made it there yet, I'm enjoying the ride while I can. Initially, I didn't like it because the first episode was really, really overdramatic and cheesy. The CGI effects in particular was so horrible, I cringed. I also had a hard time warming up to the teenage actors. The teenage actress is in that drama What Happens to My Family too, right? I was surprised.  How does she sound?  Does she have an accent?  Because when I watch WHTMF, I was wondering if she's just playing the character that way or if that's how she really talks in real life.  Can you confirm for me when you watch AE? lol…sorry, i'm just curious… I liked them enough at the end, but I much prefer watching LSY and GHS in action. One thing that has been really annoying me is the parents. I don't know why, but the majority of parents in Kdramas are just complete buttheads, to put it mildly. (lol…they seem to be a staple in K-dramas.  I notice their presence, but i'm like, "whatever….moving on" lol) LSY is a total cutie with his dimpled smiles in Angel Eyes, but I miss the intensity of Ha Woo Jin for sure. Hehe.  I know, right?  I love LSY playing that type of role…hope to see him in that role soon (hint, hint:  LG Season 2! or another melo but good drama with KSE)

I LOVE Gong Yoo (love him at Coffee Prince…i think that's the only drama i've seen him in.  Have you watched Big Man? [is that the right title? lol]), so I have Finding Mr. Destiny. I'll have to re-watch it and see if I can spot SSR. Oh, I am still really, really hoping for a second season of Liar Game. But if that ends up not happening, then yes, I hope he gets cast alongside KSE again for another drama - one with an actual LOVELINE. Haha. I think a second season is going to happen though. I mean, the ratings weren't Misaeng spectacular, but they weren't that bad either and it seems like even the entire cast wants a second season, much less the fans!

(Big Man is the one with Kang Ji Hwan. The drama with Gong Yoo is Big, but yes, I have seen it and it was a hot mess. lol. Even Gong Yoo and Lee Min Jung couldn't save the drama with their amazing performance.

I have never seen the teenage actress in Angel Eyes before in any other drama, so I can't really answer your question. I don't hear an accent when she speaks though. If anything, it's the teenage actor who speaks with the country accent as part of the character. lol. When Lee Sang Yoon speaks with that country accent, it's so adorable. Hehe. And yes, while annoying and frustrating parents are a staple to Kdramas, the parents in Angel Eyes seem to be particularly bad. I really just want to slam their face into dirt and reeeeeeally rub it in every time I see them when I usually just roll my eyes and move on, like you said. Haha.)

I love this series. It's refreshing to watch a series that's not so heavily reliant on romance. I love the trust between WJ and DJ. In the original version did the female and male lead have any romantic feelings for each other?

I've never seen the Japanese version, but based on what everyone else said, there wasn't even a hint of romance in the original. I'll watch it eventually and see for myself, but I'm trying to finish up a few other dramas that I'm in the middle of right now. :D

Just finished it the series this morning and rewatching part 2 of "Layoff Game". I loved it when Professor Ha comes to Da Jung's rescue saying that he was DJ's vicious dog. My favorite part is when he proclaims that he WJ will show them what happens when they mess with his owner. Rawrr!! Please tell me there's season 2. I love KSE and LSY's chemistry. So much sexual chemistry. Kinda like The X-Files' Mulder and Scully.

It would be such a shame if they didn't release the instrumental OST. :-( Can't remember the last time I wanted a kdrama OST so bad.

I'm currently watching other dramas…and man, right now, no drama but this one has got me so hooked or glued to the screen and neurotic for more….season 2…please come faster.  I miss L.G. and the entire cast (except for the boring MC).  Do you guys feel the same way?

I totally feel the same way! I'm still re-watching some of my favorite episodes (and totally replaying those WJ and DJ scenes) while waiting for any news about an OST or DVD release. It's good enough for me to want to shell out my money to have a physical copy of the CD and DVD. Haha.

Hello everyone! I just finished Liar Game (sorry, I'm late to the party :P ) and with all those unanswered questions, I truly *cannot* wait for a season 2!!! Much has been said about the plot, the characters and the whole production itself and I thoroughly enjoyed all the mind-boggling thinking and analysis that came with it.
I discovered this because I've been following LSY's work—however, this drama made me a Shin Sung Rok fan too! I can't believe I'm watching the same actor from Three Dads and One Mom (where he was so endearing and hilarious as the clumsy, awkward but kind-hearted "dad") and We Got Married Season 1 (where he was a comedian's virtual husband and exuded this quiet charm, although I got the impression that he was a bit annoyed or aloof with the show)! He's amazingly versatile and I'd like to see more of him. Haha.
It would be an awesome Christmas gift to have a season 2 of Liar Game. Hehehe :P

Liar Game

yer14_liargame1.jpg

Liar Game did something I never thought I’d say: It made math interesting. Fine, I didn’t always follow the mathiness in the show, but it sure spurred me to try, and that is something years of math (and subsequent years of recurring nightmares of math) could not get me to do.

This is a drama whose adaptation merits I can’t judge, having no experience of the originals—but I can say that as a brand-new viewer, I found the show downright addicting. One of my favorite things about it was that because the base concept was so strong, the drama could step away from the usual bin of tropes and take us in directions I wasn’t used to in K-dramas—no need for birth secrets or love triangles when you’ve got so much ground to cover with the Liar Game and its shady background. Rather than trying to guess what would come next, I was content to simply enjoy what was happening without feeling a compulsion to anticipate the next development.

The games did become rather convoluted and following the explanations could be a challenge, but each game was smartly written to draw out key character moments. I assume the credit for that must go to the original creator for coming up with such elaborate games, but I do also think the director deserved credit for finding suspenseful ways of depicting the underlying tension at each stage. So despite the dry rules and complicated qualifiers, the show found a way to follow the contestants’ emotional throughlines, which was a crucial point to keeping us with the characters as they lied and strategized their way through the rounds.

Liar Game also belongs in a minority of dramas this year whose ending didn’t bring about a precipitous drop, thank goodness. As the show headed toward its conclusion, rather than fraying at the seams as so many dramas unfortunately do, it became increasingly evident that Liar Game had been planned with extra care; details that had been tossed out earlier carelessly now came together, giving us an ending that made total sense while still succeeding in surprising us.

Now, all we need is a Season 2…

Liar Game

Ooh, Liar Game. How you defied my expectations of what an adaptation could be, and have set a high bar for adaptations to come. I was fortunate enough to have seen the Japanese version years ago, but I still wanted to come in with fresh eyes and treat this drama as a separate entity.

It would be easy to sift through the differences between the two live-action shows, but I’m of the belief that whether a drama is an original tale or an adaptation, it still needs to be an effective standalone show. Because if not, what would be the point? So in the case of Liar Game, I hoped that it would both preserve core elements that made fans love it in the first place as well as provide a fresh take that would best appease its current target demographic. And to that end, the show certainly succeeded in both objectives, though the opinion on the degree of the execution is divided depending on the viewer.

For myself, there was much more to appreciate than to voice complaint about. I loved that the setting of the Game was a reality show, which allowed the opportunity to scrutinize the behind-the-scenes machinations of the industry. Effective writing was what made the characters that inhabited this world so dark and alluring, like our human lie detector (and watchdog) Ha Woo-jin and the best damn villain this year in Kang Do-young.

Yet at the same time, it was the writing itself that exposed its own weaknesses. The games came with confusing rules that weren’t properly explained in a backdrop of even longer expositions. A part of me wish I could say that this was what allowed loopholes in the rounds, and yet I wouldn’t be entirely sure if something was a loophole or not because the rules were lost on me half the time.

Even then, the directing drew back to let the story play out, enhancing rather than obstructing the narrative to allow for a suspensive and hella entertaining experience. Rarely does a show effectively tie up its loose ends and leave things open-ended for the unknown future, but that’s exactly what Liar Game did. Bravo, and encore.

Stocking Stuffer: Chestnuts roasted on a hellish spitfire.

class="content-title" Man Crush Monday: “Liar Game’s” Ha Woo Jin akinahana89
MCM_HaWooJin_Feature.png

If you know me, forum stalk me, or had simply stayed up-to-date on my highlight articles for “Liar Game” back when it was airing, then this week’s Man Crush Monday should come as no surprise. For the past couple of months, I’ve been gushing practically nonstop about Ha Woo Jin and “Liar Game” and it’s funny to me because romance wasn’t even an aspect in the psychological thriller.

He’s definitely the darkest Man Crush Monday to date, but I’ve absolutely no control over who and when the crush bug bites. Still, I can, at least, provide the reasons why. Let’s take a look, shall we? (Spoilers ahead!)
