just a speculation though...they  texted each other and Shin hye use this emoticon in her text to Jong Suk  since Jong Suk used the emoticon for his aegyo...

I'm so happy this thread is finally becoming active. Hey Chingus!!! I love this couple! These two have such an amazing chemistry, on and off the screen. At the very least, we can tell that they've become good friends through this show. Hopefully this friendship will grow into something else, i.e a relationship, marriage, or babies lol.
