“Saimdang, Light’s Diary” Easily Takes First Place In Ratings With First Episode

saimdang.jpg

Lee Young Ae has demonstrated why she is such a reliable actress, as her first role back on the small screen storms into first place in terms of ratings!

According to the January 27 viewership ratings from Nielsen Korea, “Saimdang, Light’s Diary” easily catapulted to the number one position with its first two episodes, cranking out 15.6 percent and 16.3 percent ratings.

The drama performed just as strongly as its predecessor, “The Legend of the Blue Sea,” which scored 16.4 percent ratings on its first episode. The last episode of “The Legend of the Blue Sea” received 17.9 percent ratings.

The competitors for “Saimdang, Light’s Diary” did not fare as well, with KBS’s “Chief Kim” garnering 7.2 percent and MBC’s “Missing 9” bringing in 4.3 percent ratings. Both dramas scored slightly lower than their previous episodes.

" Will the diary help Ji Yoon unravel the mysteries surrounding a painting of an unknown woman from the Joseon Dynasty?"

They already known that the portrait of the beauty painting in Siesta De Luna Chianti in Tuscany, Italy is Shin Saimdang through the Diary & also notice the great resemblance Shin Saimdang to Seo Ji Yun

Chianti is a dry red wine that produce in the Tuscany region

The Diary will help Seo Ji Yun authenticate whether the Geumgangsan landscape painting was drawn by An Gyeon or by Shin Saimdang herself

In the historical flashback, Yi Gyeom's household did own the Geumgangsan landscape painting was drawn by An Gyeon.

Since Yi Gyeom family is Royal relations, they could have own a landscape painting drawn by An Gyeon who was a Royal Painter & would have Royals commission him to paint for them. An Gyeon serve the reign of Sejong the Great to Sejo. But the person who patron & benefactor of An Gyeon's talent was Grand Prince Anpyeong, 3rd son of Sejong the Great & Queen Soheon whom they share great friendship therefore Yi Gyeom being the descendants of Grand Prince Impyeong, 4th son of Sejong the Great & Queen Soheon, would have owned An Gyeon's paintings

Currently at present the only An Gyeon landscape painting that had survive Mongyu Dowondo ( 몽유도원도 - Dream Journey to the Peach Blossom Land). This landscape painting was commission by Grand Prince Anpyeong in 1447 after he dream one night that he was walking in a garden filled with peach blossoms. The painting was lost in the usurpation of Grand Prince Suyang later Sejo. But in 1893, the landscape painting mysteriously turns up in Kagoshima, Japan & currently it is housed in Tenri University, Nara, Japan. Maybe perhaps one day Japan will return this Korean artifact

This is why Min Jung Hak is so keen to authenticate the Geumgangsan painting as An Gyeon's

During Unified Silla (capital Gyeongju), Goryeo (had various capital predominantly in Pyeongyang) then Joseon (capital Hanyang now Seoul), there is one Korea (peninsula). Korea was divided at the 38th parallel after the Japanese surrender in 1945 by the United States & then Soviet Union as occupation zones. In 1948, it became the boundary of North & South Korea

Korea was divided into 3 kingdoms which consist of Baekje, Silla & Goguryeo. In 668, Silla united the kingdoms as a whole peninsula & georgraphy what is known today as the Unified Silla or Later Silla

There are plenty of looted Korean treasures as spoils of war especially in Japan & France

In the preview for Episode 3, it will touch on the Gimyo Sahwa (기묘사화, 己卯士禍, Third Literati Purge of 1519), where Shin Saimdang had to marry someone else than Yi Gyeom

@gerrytan8063 When speaking of the 38th parallel I had to laugh first because I immediately thought of that drama were she set up the memorial that way. Remembering you explain that situation to us.. I would have never thought France having artifacts of Koreas I guess it would be nice if these countries would return they precious memorabilia to they rightful owners..

French campaign against Korea was in 1866 for 6 weeks. French looted the Royal Library in Ganghwado Island. French also looted the Summer Palace in Beijing in 1860 then set it on fire. The French troops to Korea were from China

I doubt the keeper will return to original owners. It is like India asking for the return of the Koh-i-Noor diamond (looted from the Taj Mahal) from the British Crown Jewels

Four reasons to watch Lee Young-ae and Song Seung-heon's "Saimdang: Light's Diary"

Spoiler

photo812502.jpg

The first and second episodes of the new SBS drama "Saimdang: Light's Diary" are being broadcast on the 26th.

"Saimdang: Light's Diary" is a fusion historical about a Korean History lecturer named Seo Ji-yoon (Lee Young-ae) who comes across Saimdang's (Lee Young-ae) diary in Italy. Here are some points not to miss to enjoy the drama to the fullest.

- Lee Young-ae comes back for the first time in 13 years, while Song Seung-heon makes a difference

This is the first time Lee Young-ae is making a drama appearance since "Dae Jang Geum" 13 years ago. Fellow actors can't help but express their happiness of being able to work with her. Lee Young-ae takes on 2 roles as Saimdang and Seo Ji-yoon. Director Yoon Sang-ho and writer Park Eun-ryeong claim they couldn't imagine anyone else playing the part of Saimdang. Song Seung-heon is her co-actor and he is appearing as the Joseon version of "The Great Gatsby". Lee Young-ae claimed she saw a side of him she never imagined and it's the best she's seen so far.

- Oh Yoon-ah, Kim Hae-sook, Park Hye-soo and Yang Se-jong

Various actors and actresses are making appearances in the drama. Rising rookies Park Hye-soo and Yang Se-jong are taking on the roles of young Saimdang and Lee Kyeom. They start off the drama with sweet and innocent romance. Yang Se-jong plays two roles as young Lee Kyeom and the modern day Han Sang-hyeon, Seo Ji-yoon's helper in tracking down the secret to Geum-kang San-do. Saimdang's rival Hwieumdang is played by Oh Yoon-ah. The other casts includes Kim Hye-sook, Choi Jong-hwan, Yoon Da-hoon, Choi Cheol-ho, Lee Kyeong-jin, Choi Il-hwa, Kim Mi-kyeong, Park Joon-myeon, Lee Hae-yeong, Hong Seok-cheon and more.

- Fusion historical drama with imagination

"Saimdang: Light's Diary" begins with Seo Ji-yoon, an ordinary working mom who discovers Saimdang's diary in Italy. She unveils interesting tales that we never dreamt of. It's not a time-slip fantasy, but it's based on historical facts. Saimdang, Lee Yool-gok's mother and the best example of a good wife and wise mother, was the first genius artist there ever was during her time. Wirter Park Eun-ryeong says, "Saimdang was known as Artist Shin rather than Yool-gok's mom. She was a mother and a wife but she loved art and the way she sacrificed herself is still not uncomfortable to see today". Lee Young-ae who studied the historical figure for her part, said, "I just wish she wasn't reflected as a wife and mother. She was elegant but energetic and that's how I plan on portraying her".

- Excellent imagery and directing

"Saimdang: Light's Diary" was taken all over the country for a year. It was even taken in Italy to create imagery beyond expectations. Under Yoon Sang-ho's orders, the cast and crew followed his lead and created a well-made drama. We can also see Korean art through this drama. Like "Dae Jang Geum" delivered the taste of Korean food all over the world, "Saimdang: Light's Diary" will spread the beauty of Korea and Korean art. Lee Young-ae's drawing has become so good it's hard to believe she learned it in a month and Song Seung-heon plays the Geomungo like he was meant to. Everyone struggled to learn the art of history so that it doesn't seem awkward in the drama.

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Saimdang: Light's Diary" Episode 1

Spoiler

photo813353.jpg

Long ago, the famed painter Lee Gyum (played by Song Seung-heon) was in Renaissance-era Italy. What exactly he was doing there is not yet entirely clear. Art professor Ji-yoon (played by Lee Young-ae) aims to find out, although the road there is a tad circuitous. Ji-yoon is trapped between a bad professional situation and a swiftly degrading household. Neither are her fault. Ji-yoon just had the bad luck of getting involved with unscrupulous men.

It's rare to see a protagonist suffer from indirect bullying like what Ji-yoon goes through in the academic circuit. The production team has a keen eye for the power of social media. In the first strike, it's actually not Ji-yoon who is humiliated but a superior whose incompetence was exposed. Ji-yoon just gets blamed for it since she was in the same room. In the second case, Ji-yoon appears to have been intentionally set up and knocked down for political purposes.

The parallelism with Lee Gyum's story has a lot of potential, since characters in costume dramas are so frequently belittled in this manner it's easy to forget that this is very much a thing people still do in the modern day. Ji-yoon may be a professor, but it makes no difference whether or not she's smart. Indeed, even the giant discovery Ji-yoon makes in Italy is irrelevant compared to the embarassment other people felt about having their opinions challenged.

photo813352.jpg

But ah, Italy. Now there's an unexpected strong point. "Saimdang: Light's Diary" does not rub our face in how great Italy is by takig us to tourist attractions and landmarks. No, it makes Italy look cool by showing us how nice Italians are compared to Ji-yoon's own people. Not coincidentally, most of these Italians are of relatively low social standing, although the one respected foreigner appears to have earned his respect. The guy even speaks halfway decent Korean!

Admittedly it's easy to fixate on the apparent skill of the foreign cast here because normally foreign extras are terrible. But that gives me some confidence when it comes to the production team. The fact that they put the proper effort in an area that is usually ignored leads me to believe that the rest of this drama will be just as polished. Was the bit with a bird a little much? Well, sure, but like the babbling Italian man says, this is proof of destiny. Compared to that, who cares about academic politics?

[HanCinema's Drama Review] "Saimdang: Light's Diary" Episode 2

Spoiler

photo813355.jpg

We start out with brief, generally boring academic politics. Thankfully "Saimdang: Light's Diary" quickly gives up on this exposition and it's right to what we're all waiting for- the introduction of Saimdang (played by Park Hye-soo). Of course, for now she's still just a kid. Saimdang is spunky, what with trying to climb walls, but the young woman is smarter than she looks. Saimdang has a keen eye for the arts that soon gets cultivated as she spends time with Lee Gyum.

The start of their relationship is typical meet cute stuff. Where "Saimdang: Light's Diary" gets interesting is when they start talking about nature and emotions and putting those thoughts into words. There's actually little to no talk of love here. Nature, as expressed in Saimdang's poetry, is an end to itself. The natural world is an inherently beautiful place, the subtle motions of which are easy to encapsulate in the spirit of the greater universe. Lee Gyum gets that, which is why they go well together.

Consider Min-seok (played by Lee Hae-yeong-I), Ji-yoon's husband. He's a jerk of the increasingly passive variety. A brief moment of his acting like a husband should at the hospital is quickly undercut by his once again proving to have not even the slightest conception of what motivates Ji-yoon to get through life. I find it fascinating how clearly telegraphed Min-seok is as a bad person without the script having to resort to clear physical abuse.

That's the drama "Saimdang: Light's Diary" is shaping up to be- one about dramatic emotional pain. Which is a rarity, since emotional pain usually gets tossed into melodramas, since we tend to think of them as uncontrollable. "Saimdang: Light's Diary" itself makes impressive light of this by having Min-seok use that argument at one point to try and calm Ji-yoon down, genuinely oblivious as to how much of a massive disaster he's created for his undeserving family.

That's besides the more general mystery. Ji-yoon's friend and support staff Hye-jeong (played by Park Joon-myeon) is hard at work uncovering the secrets of Saimdang's story. But then there's the fantasy sequences, where Ji-yoon starts seeing herself as Saimdang, and all sorts of further questions are raised. Whether the cause of these moments is hallucination or just stylistic interpretation on the part of the production team, I too am finding myself dran into Saimdang's story.

" I didn't find Saimdang in the schedule of One TV Asia this and next week. "

Saimdang is broadcast in OH!K channel (strange as this channel mostly broadcast MBC drama, but I suppose they bought the exclusive rights to the drama) which premiere on the same day & time as Korea on Wednesday & Thursday at 9pm (GMT+08:00)

http://www.ohk-tv.com/schedule/

You can scroll the schedule on Thursday 26th January screening Episode 1-2 from 9pm onwards

There is a repeat of the Episode 1-2 on Saturday 28th January starting from 9:35pm

Therefore Saimdang will not be in your usual SBS drama channel of One TV Asia

Episode 2

When young Shin Saimdang had a chance to view An Gyeon's Geumgangsan landscape painting, she mentioned the Chinese painter Gwak Hui or in Chinese Guo Xi (곽희,郭熙, 1023-1085). Guo Xi is a Song Dynasty fame painter that he is famous for his landscape painting

Later the historical character Im Kkeok Jeong was introduce, providing Shin Saimdang safe passage at a distance, doing a favour for someone he respect (Yi Gyeom)

I really don't understand that they said acting of Park Hye Soo so bad. I agree that her voice is hard to listen but her acting is okay.

I agree the idea modern scenes so boring too. It's just like they merge a makjang drama into a historical drama.
The cinemagratophy is okay, this drama was began filming at 2015, and the budge is 2 billion won for 30 eps. You can't comparing it with UF ( 1 billion won for 20 eps), Moon Lovers (100 bilion won for 20 eps). Also, they spend a lot money to paid for Lee Young Ae. That's why SBS disagree DotS, Signal. They don't have so much money to paid (and not so much partner) few years ago.

[by Baek Soo Yeon] Actress Lee Young Ae attended the press conference of SBS’s new drama series ‘Saimdang, Light’s Diary’ which was held on January 24 at Lotte Hotel in Sogong, Seoul.

Making her comeback on the TV screen after 14 years, Lee Young Ae appeared unchanged on the scene. Her pure, oxygen-like silhouette was intact and her beauty was still at its peak.

‘Saimdang, Light’s Diary’, starring Lee Young Ae and Song Seung Hyun is a fusion history drama that follows the story of Korean art history specialist and part-time lecturer Se Ji Yoon who finds a secret journal in Italy. It will start airing on January 26.

Another fusion sageuk to be watched.

Hello everyone... it seems they are quite a number of familiar "faces" here and I know I will learn a lot here. :)

Got the chance to start watching it this holiday and it looks interesting especially because of the main leads.  However, I love the mystery related to the story etc. Looking forward to the next episode.
