K-Drama male leads who have a one-sided love for a long time

Apart from the type of cool male lead, many audiences are into male characters who spend years holding unrequited love for their women.

Choi Dal Po (Pinocchio)

Lee Jong Suk continued to portray a character who carries a one-sided love. In “Pinocchio”, he has a crush on his “granddaughter” many years before she loves him back.

Dal Po has a miserable past. He was adopted by Choi In Ha’s grandfather. Having the same age and growing up together, Dal Po naturally developed his secret fondness for In Ha. He always stays by her side, takes care of her and only loves her. In the end, the two become an official couple after solving all conflicts and problems.

Lee Jong Suk’s role in “Pinocchio” was supposed to be played by another actor: hiatus for a painful reason

The famous K-drama “Pinocchio” helped Lee Jong Suk establish his name in the acting world, but he was not the first choice for this role.

The K-drama “Pinocchio”, which starred Lee Jong Suk and Park Shin Hye, was all the rage in late 2014 and early 2015. When the series first aired, Lee Jong Suk was starting to rise after the successes of “Doctor Stranger” and “School 2013”, and only became an A-list actor thanks to the huge popularity of “Pinocchio”.

In the series, Lee Jong Suk assumes the role of male lead Choi Dal Po, a genius with excellent memorization and analysis skills, who pretends he’s dumb at school. Despite his outstanding visuals and overflowing chemistry with co-star Park Shin Hye, it turns out that Lee Jong suk was not the first choice for Dal Po. According to the production crew, they first offered the role to Kim Woo Bin, who previously worked with Park Shin Hye in “The Heirs”, and was expected to be an explosive combination. However, at the time, Kim Woo Bin was too busy filming for the Chinese movie “We Are Young” and the action/thriller movie “The Con Artists”, and had to turn down the role due to his packed schedule.

All in all, why Lee Jong Suk had a perfect performance in “Pinocchio”, some viewers still express regrets that Kim Woo Bin couldn’t make the show. They also feel extremely sorry for the actor, as he was diagnosed with cancer 3 years later, resulting in an extremely long hiatus. From an A-list actor with a super successful track, Kim Woo Bin saw lowered popularity due to his absence. Recently though, the actor managed to make a notable return via the omnibus series.....

Park Shin Hye was Lee Jong Suk’s partner in “Pinocchio”

In this hit series, Park Shin Hye transformed into female lead Choi In Ha – who suffers from the “Pinocchio syndrome” which causes her to hiccup whenever she lies. Meanwhile, Lee Jong Suk assumed the role of Choi Dal Po, the “uncle” of In Ha. The couple’s desire to unveil the truth has driven them to become reporters together, leading to various hardships and pains.

K-DRAMA STORIES

7 K-Drama Second Leads Who Deserved Better

Mikaela Apr 21, 2022 Updated : Jul 13, 2022 15,424 Views

Everybody loves a happy ending. Whenever the main male and female characters of a K-Drama get together, it’s bound to cause butterflies. But every now and then, you find yourself rooting for the guy on the sidelines.

The “second lead” is a common show trope in K-Dramas, often characterized by pining looks and conflicts of interest. This leads to the characters being well-loved for their complexity and relatability when it comes to matters of the heart.

We round up seven male second leads who pulled off their roles well, leaving us wishing they got more than they did at the end of the day.

Warning: This article might contain minor spoilers for the dramas mentioned.

7. “Pinocchio” - Seo BeomJo

Kim YoungKwang’s Seo BeomJo is somehow simultaneously straightforward and fickle. The second lead does a full 180 midway into the drama after being initially presented as a heart of gold mama’s boy who is willing to do anything for his long-time crush Choi InHa (Park ShinHye). It’s an interesting shift of tone that doesn’t take away the fact that despite having conniving tendencies, BeomJo was genuinely just interested in doing right by InHa.

A collection of Lee Jong-suk's 'Life's Characters' works, from 'Your Trees' to 'Dangjamsa', with blood, sweat, and tears.

Lee Jong-suk also has a special relationship with the writer Park Hye-ryun of I Hear Your Voice. Starting with this drama, he also appeared in Park Hye-ryun's "Pinocchio" and "While You Were Sleeping".

In SBS 'Pinocchio (2014-2015)', Lee Jong-suk transformed into Choi Dal-po, a reporter with a brilliant brain and memorization, and presented a fantasy romance with Choi In-ha (Park Shin-hye), a woman suffering from Pinocchio syndrome, a fictional disease.
