The great demand for “Doctor Stranger” in China has spawned a 120-minute movie version of the whole drama set for release on the big screen.

According to an interview with Dispatch, a representative from “Doctor Stranger” has confirmed that a movie version of the drama is in the works. “It’s true that there will be a movie version for ‘Doctor Stranger’ in China. There’s only four more episodes left until the end of the series. There will be more detailed talks with the China side after the drama ends,” said the representative from “Doctor Stranger.”

The 20-episode drama will be shortened into a movie version, according to the representative. “The 1,400-minute drama will be cut short to a 120-minute version. We’re also in the talks of having it dubbed in Chinese to be more accessible for the Chinese fans.”

This is the first time that a Korean drama will be edited as a movie version. Normally, other countries obtain publishing rights and have local actors work on a remake of the drama. But “Doctor Stranger” is planning to make new movie contents from the standard drama that it is airing.

It also seems that there will be an addition to the story line. “There’s a possibility that we’ll change the story line a bit in consideration of the emotions of the Chinese viewers,” said the representative. “Because of this, there will be an additional one week of filming. We’re currently fixing the schedules of both the production crew and the actors.”

The representative also revealed that the movie is set for release only in China. “We are targeting only the Chinese fans for this movie and thus, we are planning to premier this movie only in China.” Other than these information, the representative didn’t elaborate further and said that the particular information about the movie such as the premier date are still not confirmed. “We’ll know after we have discussed about it,” said the representative.

Lucky fans in China!

Screen-shot-2014-07-13-at-5.41.20-PM.png

It has been belatedly reported that actress Kang So Ra has gotten into a traffic accident.

On July 8, the actress was on her way to film SBS’ Monday-Tuesday drama “Doctor Stranger,” when she got into the accident.

A representative of her agency commented on July 13, “The cars slightly bumped into each other. She does not have to get treated at the hospital, but she felt pain in her neck muscles, and thus she wears a detachable cast around her neck.”

“Everyone at the filming location seemed to be surprised upon seeing her poor physical condition,” the rep said, and added, “Luckily there seem to be no aftereffects.”

On July 11, Kang So Ra started filming the Chinese film version of “Doctor Stranger.” A representative of the drama said, “We were surprised to see Kang So Ra enter with a neck cast. Although she was not seriously injured, she said her neck feels stiff. To everyone’s relief, there was no change to the filming schedule, and she showed her regular bright image on set.”

Chinese Film Version of “Doctor Stranger” to Have a Different Ending

ddangha July 16, 2014 10 Comments

Doctor-Stranger-800x450.jpg

SBS‘s hit drama “Doctor Stranger” will be re-edited as a film for the Chinese audience, but with a different ending from the original source material.

The film version of “Doctor Stranger” will shorten the original drama into 120 minutes for the big screen. This will be accomplished by cutting out a lot of the background information on the main characters. Instead the film will focus on the plot points that unfold during the drama.

According to a production staff member, most of Lee Jong Suk‘s character’s back story in North Korea will be cut out, with a bigger focus on the mellow storyline between his character and his love interest played by Jin Se Yeon. The rivalry between the two male leads will also be emphasized.

The additional shooting for the Chinese film wrapped up on July 14. According to an insider, the film version will have a different ending from the drama.

“Doctor Stranger” was a smashing hit in Korea, coming first place in its time slot. Its popularity has also led to the Chinese version to be released later this year.

Cinemas not optimistic about Doctor Stranger being edited into a 2-hour movie version
Written by yeonana @ Soompi

(sunshine4ever's note: Please note that this is not a word to word translation, but you can kind of understand what will happen for the movie according to yeonana's perspective. Please credit yeonana if taken out of Soompi. Thanks.)
A brief interpretation of relevant parts of the original article:
News on "You Who Came From the Stars" being edited into a movie version for summer premier in Chinese cinemas had already been circulating, and more recently there has also been news that "Doctor Stranger" has also decided to edit and compress its 20 episodes into a two hour movie version to be released in China later this year.
While there’s no change in footages and it’s neither a remake of the drama, by deleting scenes to create a highly compressed movie from a drama series and charging premise fees, concerns are on whether fans will continue to seek after it and how the prospects and market outlook will be for this kind of movie format.
The format of "Doctor Stranger" will differ slightly from "You Who Came From the Stars". The drama director said “For the movie version of Doctor Stranger some new scenes will be added on. We have already communicated to the screenwriter and actors, and have increased one episode of fees to shoot the required scenes for the movie version.” Besides that, the opening and ending scenes will also be different from the drama, contents related to North Korea may also be removed, and the background is to be set as a third country.
From an interview conducted with a cinema representative, their views are that acceptance of this kind of movie format may not be very high with the local audience. The speculation is that a Korean drama turned movie will still have an audience, but may be difficult to become a box-office hit. The target audience would be women and K-fans who will watch to support the actors. Although the concept is appealing to fans, but if the objective of riding on a windfall is too obvious, it will highly likely be criticised once the movie is released.

Sharing some updates on DS C-movie. A rough translation of the original article published today:

The main push factor of Doctor Stranger movie will be Park Hae Jin vs Lee Jong Suk
1BC88972-A3C4-8E8B-107A-6A27BB86C008_zps573d2bd2.jpg
According to South Korean media reports, a representative from Doctor Stranger has confirmed that the movie version is in progress: “It’s a fact that China will film the movie version of Doctor Stranger. After the drama ended, in-depth discussions with China’s side are being carried out. The 1400 minutes drama will be shortened to a 120 minutes version, and we are still discussing on whether or not to proceed with Chinese language dubbing".

This is the first time a Korean drama will be made into a movie version by another country, as other countries would generally remake the drama series with local actors after obtaining distribution rights. But Doctor Stranger is planning to use some of the original drama contents plus new movie contents to reproduce a new piece. The representative revealed that they may be adding a new story line: "Taking into account the feelings of the Chinese audience, we considered changing part of the original story, hence we added one week of filming". The additional filming ended on 14th July.
Because it is shortened to a 120 minutes movie, hence a lot of the main leads' background information will be removed to focus on the plot, according to a production team staff, Park Hoon’s story in North Korea will mostly be cut out to focus on Lee Jong Suk and Jin Se Yeon’s love story, and the two male leads confrontations. According to insiders, the recent additional film footages will allow audiences to see a different ending from the drama version.
The representative also said that the movie version will be released in China: "This movie will only target Chinese fans, hence we plan to release it in mainland China". Detailed information on the movie, such as its release date is still under discussion, and no decisions have been made yet.

Other articles have reported that the release of "You Who Came From the Stars" movie version in China is still undecided, as the movie will have no new footages, whilst “Doctor Stranger” movie version will have some new scenes. Will not be translating these articles, but the sources with similar news in Chinese are here : SOURCE 1, SOURCE 2
