Hello, everyone!!! How do I address ppl in this thread - Gumiho shippers? Forbidden Lovers? Foxes and Vixens? hahaha.. I know I am so late in the game, just discovered that there is a thread for 9-tailed fox... if i had known earlier i would have been all over this thread earlier, hehehehe...

anyway, i watched this drama basically because of JO HYUN JAE. he is my one and only true love (seriously). i discovered him when Love Letter aired in the Philippines, but didn't follow his career seriously as i was busy with work. i rediscovered him the year 3 dads 1 mom aired in the Philippines (september 2008, i think), only to find out that he has started his military service already. so to while away the time while waiting for his release i decided to check out his other projects (dramas and movies).

it took me a while to watch Gumiho/9-Tailed Fox/Forbidden Love. At first I didn't want to watch it because from the synopsis it felt like a sad/heavy/dark drama. Just from the synopsis I knew that the kind of love that exists between a human and a vixen is doomed from the start. So knowing that, i didn't want to put myself thru the roller coaster of emotions that the drama would put me through. but then after watching all of JHJ's other dramas and movies, i was left craving for more of him so decided to take a chance on Gumiho.

the first time i watched it, my initial impressions were reinforced - sad/heavy and dark. i cried buckets, my heart and my head ached from too much emotion and from too much crying that i stopped watching dramas altogether. but my love for JHJ drove me to drama watching again. i have since watched his other dramas a number of times with Ballad of Suh DOng topping the most re-watched drama (i watch all 55 eps of BSD at least once a month, that's how much i love the drama and JHJ), but steered clear of watching Gumiho again.

but i seriously couldn't resist JHJ, so i once again braved the world of the gumiho clan. i still cried this time, my heart still ached from the emotional wringer the drama put me through, and i still think it is sad/heavy/dark, but this time i appreciated it more. i came to love the story, and appreciate the acting and the hardwork that went into the action scenes. I LOVE THE SWORD FIGHTS immensely. Jo Hyun Jae is really a very good and versatile actor. Imagine, Andrea (JHJ's character in Love Letter) the would-be priest, and Kang Min Woo, the gun-wielding/sword-wielding hunter of the foxes of the Gumiho clan. 2 roles that are so far different from each other, and yet so believably portrayed by just one actor. AMAZING, is all i can say.

i have come to love GUMIHO now. i have watched it 5 times already. the story is well-written - everything is logical, not your typical kdrama romance of poor girl meets rich guy and all the hulaballoos that goes in between; the pacing of the story is quite fast no dull moment; the action scenes were carried out well, JHJ did his own stunts, even injuring himself in the process; the OST is so hauntingly beautiful; and the acting especially by Jo Hyun Jae and Kim Tae Hee are excellent - no overacting, no over-the-top histrionics, carefully controlled emotions, and emotions unleashed at the right time.

yes, the ending is sad - all warriors of the gumiho clan died, Kang Min Woo (JHJ) survived. some wanted Si Yeon (KTH) to survive so her love for Kang Min Woo would be realized. some wanted si yeon and moo young (jun jin) to be together in the end.

i plan to come back to this thread with a synopsis/summary of each episode. i will also include my thoughts on each episode especially the ending. i will also post other goodies related to this drama for those who will enter in this thread at a future date, hopefully my inputs will help them appreciate the drama more. Meanwhile, here is the English lyrics of the hauntingly beautiful song that plays whenever Jo Hyun Jae and Kim Tae Hee's love story becomes the focus of an episode.

Always

Don’t forget we’re always together

And don’t cry for me

For the love you saved for me

Even without words I can understand the look in your eyes.

I will never believe anyone anymore

I so look forward to this day

This day when we are together.

I pursue you in the depths of my soul

You make my heart ache

When you leave me again.

Please believe me now

Don’t leave me with painful memories again

I’ll love you forever.

I will never believe anyone anymore

I so look forward to this day

This day when we are together.

I pursue you in the depths of my soul

You make my heart ache

When you leave me again.

Please believe me now

Don’t leave me with painful memories again

I’ll love you forever.

Even if the end of the world is near

I’ll still love only you

Till the end of time.

This is an old JHJ news from Korean Daily (July 7, 2004) regarding the drama "Forbidden Love" (also referred to as "Gumiho" or "Legend of the Nine-Tailed Fox).

3913940820.jpg

The new KBS2 drama ”Forbidden Love” (Legend of the Nine-Tailed Fox), which is a unique combination of high-tech horror and fantasy romance, will premiere on the 19th of this month. A press conference was held on July 1, 2004.

Jo Hyun-Jae — a member of the SCIS in love with a vixen

Jo Hyun-Jae sported a new crew cut to suit the character in the drama; he is really very serious about this role. He plays a member of the SCIS Special Squad, a warrior trained to exterminate the Nine-Tailed Fox clan, but he falls in love with a vixen played by KimTae-Hee which leads to tragedy.

Like in “Love Letter” and “First Love”, JHJ again plays a tragic role. The only difference is this drama has more bloody scenes than the earlier ones.

Kim Tai-Hee — a member of the Nine-Tailed Fox clan, a tragic warrior

As an actress who always gives the impression of being delicate, Kim Tai-Hee plays a curator in the Natural History Museum. But this is only her day job; at night she is transformed into a warrior of the Nine-Tailed Fox clan.

The SCIS Special Squad member Kang Min-Woo (JHJ) falls in love with a member of the Nine-Tailed Fox clan Yoon Shi-Yeon (KTH), a relationship that is doomed to tragedy. Kim Tae-Hee has never had to act in so many scenes on a wire before, but she says she did not have any serious injuries, just a few scrapes. She gestures excitedly to indicate that when she is swinging her double swords, she feels thrilled with the action scenes.

Jun Jin — leader of the Nine-Tailed Fox warriors

Jun Jin who has a major role in this drama says this is different from his last work, the situation drama “Non-Stop”. This time he plays the role of Moo-Young, the ambitious leader of the Nine-Tailed Fox warriors whose mission is to destroy human beings in the world. When he finds out his fellow warrior Shi-Yeon is in love with a man, he can only shed tears in private.

Han Ye-Seul — a seducer of men

Jun Jin’s co-star in “Non-Stop”, Han Ye-Seul, plays Choe-Yi, a vixen who goes out at night seducing men. She is in love with Moo-Young, someone all the Nine-Tailed Fox clan rely on, and she can only hide her sorrow in her heart.

Here is another old JHJ news report, this time from www.geocities.com/thejohyeonjaeshrine , www.geocities.com/phpbb.

FoxMultiPics.jpg

Jo Hyun-Jae Got His Rib Bone Fractured In GwangJu, JuNam (June 2, 2004)

Jo Hyun-Jae, who is playing a human warrior in Gu-mi-ho (”Forbidden Love”), has got his rib-bone fractured in Gwangju, Junam. This happened during a fight scene where the actors were dangling on wires and flying all over the place. A stuntsman who was playing a Gu-mi-ho warrior injured Jo Hyun-Jae’s chest, so JHJ reportedly felt extreme pain and had difficulty in breathing.

The director wanted to skip JHJ’s scenes and shoot another segment. People on set suggested he should go see a doctor, but JHJ insisted on finishing the scene first. He received first-aid and continued with the shooting.

“Gu-mi-ho warriors are stronger than humans and I mostly get beaten up in the drama, so I don’t know how many ‘glorious’ scars would remain on my body,” Jo Hyun-Jae said laughing. As it turned out this time, his rib bone was fractured.

We are recycling this old news because once again it shows what tough mettle JHJ is made of and how he always puts the greater good above his own. It takes a lot of preparation for actors to be strung up on wires, which is why JHJ insists they carry on with the shooting. He is certainly no prima donna. That is why we are not at all surprised he could make it as one of the boys in the army.

You can see in this BTS video of the shooting of “Forbidden Love” how dangerous it is for the actors to be flying around on wires. It gives you a pretty good idea that being an action actor is not a piece of cake. The only complaint we have about this very interesting video is — there is too little JHJ! Every one of the lead actors speaks to the camera except our JHJ, well, just once, very briefly. He must be doing his usual thing — concentrating on his acting.

Here is an article posted on the wulijohyunjae website (this is an English website dedicated to Jo Hyun Jae) on March 30, 2009.

IN DEFENCE OF THE FOX

“Except for ‘Forbidden Love’, Jo Hyun-Jae has not made a single mistake in his career.”

I saw the above comment on my favourite JHJ Chinese website the other day, and it really ruffled my feathers.

Just because “Forbidden Love” (Legend of the 9-tailed fox) is the most under-rated of Jo Hyun-Jae’s dramas does not mean it is inferior.

The reason it is, arguably, the least popular of JHJ’s dramas is because it is the most unusual, the most daring, the most challenging, and, as such, may not appeal to the taste of the masses.

It is certainly not your usual run-of-the-mill Korean drama — boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, girl gets incurable disease, girl dies, boy cries.

Or maybe it is, but with a twist! For one thing, the girl isn’t human: she is a vixen, as it turned out. The plot is based on the myth of the 9-tailed fox. This legend may be common knowledge in Korea but I am not familiar with it, so it is refreshing to me. The plot is certainly not the rehashed-to-death storyline of typical Korean drama. It takes a little imagination, though, to follow the twists and turns, jolts and jerks. The foxes in human form are all very attractive (at least the 5 young leads), and they all have supernatural powers, rather like Hollywood’s X-men. The myth, however, only provides the platform for this drama. The plot’s development follows a logical pattern, and it is science fiction with human elements.

Jo Hyun-Jae stars in his first action drama and presents a hitherto unsuspected macho side of himself. Coming off “Sunshine” in which he plays a rather spoilt young man (but so sweet!), this is a bold attempt in a new direction. JHJ is not content to rest on his laurels of perfecting the role of the poor little rich kid. His role in “Forbidden Love” is a venture into uncharted territory, an experimentation with a new genre that pays off. It is a very physical role: he punches and kicks like a pro. And it paves the way for his role in “G.P.506″ four years later.

JHJ looks older than his actual age of 24 when this drama was made. In his four preceding roles in “Great Ambition”, “Love Letter”, “First Love”, and “Sunshine”, he looks boyish and immature. But here in “Forbidden Love” he looks every inch the man. His character Min-Woo is a member of the SCIS Special Squad whose mission is to destroy the 9-tailed fox clan. He is one of the few characters in Korean drama who has a real job, who has to work for a living. This makes the character more realistic and anchors the drama in the real world. Instead of just walking and talking, Min-Woo goes about his business with professional panache. And JHJ in a crew-cut looks very smart and clean-cut.

I like the pairing of Jo Hyun-Jae and Kim Tae-Hee, whatever some people say — they look good together. And there is chemistry between JHJ and KTH. Their relationship in this drama arouses our sympathy– two star-crossed lovers striving against all odds, trying to overcome insurmountable obstacles. I like the JHJ charcter Min-Woo’s persistence and conviction: he knows what he wants and he knows how to go about it. There is no such nonsense of “To be or not to be” about him. This contributes to the fast pace of the drama.

The love story is set against the larger (macro) plot of the fight between men and beasts, essentially a struggle for survival. The foxes are trying to find a niche on this earth dominated by men, and the men are bent on destroying the foxes whom they see as threats to the human race. Torn between these two worlds, there is no possibility of a happy ending for our doomed lovers. The drama poses the philosophical question –who has the right to exist? The survival of the fittest? Majority rules? The drama also challenges the basic assumption that only two of a kind can relate. Min-Woo and Shi-Yeon try to bridge the gap between the species, but of course their efforts are futile. The title says it all — Forbidden Love. “Forbidden Love” is perhaps the most thought-provoking of JHJ’s dramas.

The ending is to be expected (though it’s another one of those in which JHJ doesn’t get the girl. Scream!) The 1000-year-old fox has to be sacrificed — this makes more sense than the staple diet of Korean drama in which the perfectly healthy heroine suddenly develops an unexplained fatal illness and dies a protracted, excruciating death (squeezing every tear out of the captive viewers.) The vixen-heroine dies, leaving our hero with a handful of dust, literally. The anguished look on Min-Woo’s face stays in my mind for a long time afterwards. JHJ masters this role with complete ease and with a new-found maturity.

One last (trivial) point: JHJ in this drama changes my prejudice against men who wear sleeveless shirts/T-shirts. I’ve always found men who wear tops with no sleeves lacking in something. What are they trying to show off? But our action hero here in “Forbidden Love” redefines men’s fashion. Men who go sleeveless can look good (but they have to look good in the first place; otherwise this fashion guru’s advice is: wear sleeves!)

“Forbidden Love” is the first Jo Hyun-Jae drama that I watched and it will always have a special place in my heart.
