Along with the Gods director Kim Yonghwa will soon return to set for his latest production, the space drama The Moon. On the heels of the global success of SPACE SWEEPERS, Korea’s first space-set film, Kim’s new film will star Sul Kyunggu, D.O. (aka Doh Kyungsoo), and Kim Heeae.

Dexter Studios, the VFX company, set up by Kim when he made Mr. Go (2013), has signed a contract worth around KRW 6 billion (KRW 5.4 million) to complete the visual effects on the forthcoming production. To be produced by Blaad Studios, the film is on track to begin production in early summer.

The Moon will follow the story of a man who is stranded in space following an accident, played by Doh Kyungsoo, and the man on earth played by Sul Kyunggu, trying to get him home. Kim Heeae will play a NASA official holding a critical key to the incident.

Kim scored consecutive ten million admissions hits with Along with the Gods: The Two Worlds (2017) and Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days (2018), which are currently the third and 12th most well-attended local films at the Korean box office.

Beyond Director Kim’s films, Dexter Studios has provided acclaimed visual effects for SPACE SWEEPERS, ASHFALL (2019) and the Chinese box office hit The Wandering Earth, among many other hits films. Dexter also plans to make use of a new virtual production studio they are building in Paju, to the west of Seoul.

Kim Hee Ae And Moon So Ri In Talks To Lead Upcoming Drama

by S. Cho | Jun 29, 2021

Both Kim Hee Ae and Moon So Ri are reviewing their offers for a new drama!

On June 29, a representative of the entertainment industry shared with Sports Chosun that both Kim Hee Ae and Moon So Ri would be starring in the upcoming drama “Queen Maker” (literal title). The “womance” drama tells the story of two women who used to lead starkly different lives, but leave everything they know behind to combine forces and create a just and truthful world.

Kim Hee Ae’s reported character is Hwang Do Hee, a skilled career woman who hasn’t come down from her 12 centimeter (approximately 4.7 inch) high stilettos for the past 12 years. She’s the best in her field of President Identity (PI) consulting and is the leader of the Strategic Planning Office at Eunsung Group, the third best domestic business.

By analyzing the appearance, voice tone, habits, preferences, rumors, and fatal weaknesses of the Eunsung Group’s owner’s family, she is able to perfectly present them in a way that reduces owner risk. Despite all her hard work in this field, she overcomes adversity to work towards making Oh Seung Sook the mayor of Seoul.

Moon So Ri is reported to portray Oh Seung Sook, a labor rights lawyer nicknamed “crazy rhinoceros.” For the past 20 years, Oh Seung Sook has plowed through like a “rhino’s horn” for common people and workers and is a self-proclaimed Korean Lady of Justice. She is the president of the Women’s Worker Association, Korean Women’s Human Rights Wave, and leader of the Worker’s Solidarity with Rights foundation, proving her charm as a powerful female lead who stops at nothing to protect the weak.

As a current labor rights lawyer and a popular YouTuber, Oh Seung Sook has no interest in authority, but thanks to the help of “Queen Maker” Hwang Do Hee, she becomes determined to become the mayor of Seoul.

In response to these reports, Kim Hee Ae’s agency YG Entertainment commented to Sports Today, “The new drama ‘Queen Maker’ is a project that Kim Hee Ae is reviewing.”

Moon So Ri’s agency C-JeS Entertainment shared, “Moon So Ri received an offer for ‘Queen Maker’ and is reviewing it.”

If confirmed, this will be Kim Hee Ae’s first drama since the smash hit “The World of the Married.” Moon So Ri is currently appearing on MBC’s “On the Verge of Insanity.”

A promotional image of “Paik’s Spirit” (Netflix Korea)

Days after “Squid Game” became the first Korean drama series to rank first on Netflix’s US top 10 TV show list, the global streaming service has unveiled its line-up of Korean programming for the upcoming months, spotlighting 10 drama series and reality shows.

Netflix Korea introduced the shows during Tudum, Netflix’s global fan event, on Saturday, which was streamed on Netflix Korea’s YouTube channel. The real-time fan event was moderated by K-pop band Super Junior’s member Kim Hee-chul and EXO’s Kai.  “Not only K-pop, K-contents are gaining huge popularity these days. Many people have come across Korean content through Netflix which has played a driving force behind the popularity (of Korean dramas and shows),” Kim said.

The upcoming content offered on Netflix include “Paik’s Spirit,” which will become Netflix’s first reality series focusing on Korean drinks, food and culture, and “My Name,” a crime-thriller starring Korean actor Han So-hee. The shows will be released on Oct. 1 and Oct. 15, respectively.

Other upcoming Korean drama series and reality shows available on Netflix include “New World” and “The Hungry and The Hairy” in November, “The Silent Sea” and “Single’s Inferno” in December, “Juvenile Justice” and “All of Us Are Dead” in Jan. 2022 and “Love and Leashes” in Feb. 2022.

The road-trip reality show “The Hungry and The Hairy” is a Netflix original series produced by star producer Kim Tae-ho, and will showcase K-pop star Rain and comedian Ro Hong-chul, who share common interest in motorcycle riding. The two will experience a variety of activities and local foods during a road trip across South Korea.

Neflix Korea will be hoping to replicate the success of “Squid Game.” The nine-part mystery sci-fi series launched on Sept. 17, is directed by Hwang Dong-hyuk, and stars veteran actor Lee Jung-jae. The plot revolves around hundreds of cash-strapped people accepting an unexpected invitation to compete in various games for a tempting prize of 45.6 billion won ($39 million).

Restauranteur Paik Jong-won will have another entertainment show on alcoholic beverages this time with Netflix called “Paik’s Spirit.” The show will be released on Oct. 1.

The video platform had an online press conference on Monday to introduce what the new series is all about. Paik will meet a variety of celebrities and experts in different fields and enjoy a drink and chat with them. Actor Kim Hee-ae, singer Jay Park, TV producer Na Young-seok, and volleyball player Kim Yeon-koung are some of the guests Paik will have on his new show.

“In ‘Paik’s Spirit,’ there are stories, life and more, but I don’t remember much of it,” joked Paik, while adding that the idea to make the program came from eating and drinking with TV production staff.

“Alcoholic beverages are food to me. I think about drinks when I’m hungry. When I am reminded of some drinks, that is the signal that my body sends that I’m hungry.”

Through the program, he also wants to spread the word about Korean liquors to the world. Paik hopes the global community can know as much about Korean drinks as they know about Korean food.

Celebrity chef and franchise owner Paik Jong-won is set to take global viewers into the world of Korean alcoholic beverages with his new Netflix original show, "Paik's Spirit," which will premiere Oct. 1.

"I have been doing a lot of shows to introduce Korean cuisine up to now, but Korean alcohol is just as good as the cuisine," the culinary star said Monday during an online press conference for the upcoming show. "There are so many types of (Korean) drinks to introduce to the world."

For the new talk show, Paik will invite guests for a meal and drink and share stories about their lives while exploring different types of traditional Korean alcoholic beverages.

The six-part show will feature rappers Jay Park and Loco, star producer Na Young-seok, actors Han Ji-min, Lee Joon-gi and Kim Hee-ae, and star volleyball player Kim Yeon-koung as guests.

"Some of the guests are those I already knew and others I've been a fan of. It's awkward at first, but once we get started on drinks, we get comfortable with each other," Paik explained. "They are all popular and are people that others aspire to be like. But as we chat over a drink, we loosen up and share our stories which were both touching and taught me a lot."

The show's producer, Park Hee-yeon, who previously worked with Paik in tvN's food show, "Street Food Fighter" and "House Cook Master Baek," said this show stands out from Paik's previous shows as it delves deeper into his personal stories.

"Whereas in 'Street Food Fighter,' Paik would talk alone about foreign cuisine, this show proceeds as he's grabbing a drink with someone else. People tend to open up about their life, human nature, and their personal spirit over drinks, hence the name of the title," she explained.

"Up until now, he had been focusing on food and cooking. And this time, Paik introduces alcoholic drinks and describes them in his own words, drawing on his anecdotes," Park said. She added that the show will share moments of Paik bonding with the guests through frank conversations over a drink.

The producer said Paik's extensive knowledge of alcohol gave her the idea to create the show.

"While working with Paik, we had a lot of chances to go out for drinks. And every time we did that, he would share interesting stories about different drinks. And I thought it would be nice if we can share this with more people, which was the start of 'Paik's Spirit,'" she said.

"As I delve into Korean traditional drinks, I realized that a lot of them have a cultural essence, a lot of interesting stories. So I wanted to share them with viewers abroad and show that there is good food in Korea and also good drinks."

When asked what his countries' beverages mean to him, Paik answered that they are like seasoning for food.

"To me, a drink is part of the food. I love drinking, but I only want to drink when I'm hungry… So whenever I drink, I need food to go with it," he said. "They're like a seasoning that makes food taste better."

Korea’s Hottest Directors Under 40

by Pierce Conran | Jan 11, 2022

New Generation of Commercial and Indie Voices Leading Korean Film into the Future

Compared to many film markets, the Korean film industry has never been shy about giving new filmmakers a chance to sit in the director’s chair. Each year a remarkable number of new directors make their debuts across the indie and commercial realms.

Some of them graduate from other production roles such as assistant director, others prove their mettle through acclaimed short films, while others still come up through Korea’s growing number of graduate feature film production programs, such as the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA), where both Jo Sunghee (Space Sweepers) and Yoon Sunghyun (Time to Hunt, 2020), among many others, made their feature debuts.

As Korean screen content goes from strength to strength and continues to see its global audience expand, these new voices are essential to keeping the industry’s output varied and fresh. Yet these new creators are also necessary to capture the complicated sentiments of a new generation of South Korean citizens who came of age after some of the country’s darkest moments and have a radically different set of social and political views from earlier generations.

Below are some of the filmmakers under the age of 40 who have been attracting attention as important members of this new generation.

Lim Daehyung

spacer.png
Moonlit Winter (2019)

35-year-old filmmaker Lim Daehyung first drew attention through shorts such as LEMON TIME (2012) and The World of If (2014), before making a major impression with his Chaplin-esque feature debut Merry Christmas Mr. Mo, which bowed at the Busan International Film Festival in 2016. The black-and-white feature of a young filmmaker reconnecting with his father through the making of a Chaplin hommage, Merry Christmas Mr. Mo stood out among Korean indie features for its warmth and pathos. LIM was welcomed back to Busan in 2019 when his sophomore film Moonlit Winter (2019) was selected as the festival’s closing film. Calling to mind the classic Japanese romance Love Letter, Lim’s achingly beautiful and wistful drama starred Kim Heeae as a Korean woman traveling to snowy Northern Japan to reconnect with an old flame and became a significantly limited release hit.

Lim Daehyung’s Acclaimed Japan-Set Indie Romance Continues to Find Global Audiences

Lim Daehyung’s indie hit Moonlit Winter (2019), starring Kim Heeae and Kim Sohye, was released theatrically in Japan on January 7.

The second film from Director Lim, Moonlit Winter had its world premiere at the Busan International Film Festival, where it served as the closing film of its 2019 edition. The film was largely set and shot in Otaru, a town in Japan’s northern Hokkaido province, and it is partly influenced by the modern Japanese classic Love Letter, one of the most successful Japanese films ever to screen in Korea.

Kim Heeae stars as Yoonhee, a recent divorcée whose daughter Saebom (Kim Sohye) discovers a secret letter she received from Hokkaido in Japan. Saebom, who is curious about her mother’s past and worried about her current depression, convinces Yoonhee to travel to Japan and seek out the letter’s sender.

The film was a significant low-budget hit in Korea, where it welcomed over 120,000 viewers on limited release. It went on to be a major contender at local industry awards events, earning Best Director and Screenplay at the Blue Dragon Film Awards and the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards, and Best Producer at the Wildflower Film Awards Korea, among other prizes.

Distributor Little Big Pictures revealed that Yūko Nakamura and Sho Yakumura, who played the Japanese characters Jun and Ryusuke in the film, participated in a stage event to promote the film’s Japanese release following a screening held on January 8.

The Dinner has been adapted in three other countries, including Oren Moverman’s US version, which premiered in competition at the Berlinale in 2017 and starred Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan and Rebecca Hall. This will be its first adaptation in Asia.

Both Secret: Untold Melody and The Dinner are produced by Hive Media Corp, the Seoul-based production company whose credits include Inside Men and Deliver Us From Evil.

Secret: Untold Melody is a time-travel romance that follows a promising pianist and a mysterious music student who meet each other in an old practice room with a hidden secret.  Directed by Seo You-min (Recalled), the film stars Doh Kyung-soo (Swing Kids) – also known as D.O. from K-pop group EXO – and Won Jin-a from Netflix series Hellbound. It is in post-production. The 2007 original won the outstanding Taiwanese film of the year at the Golden Horse Awards.

Black comedy drama The Dinner follows the dilemma and irony of two well-to-do families who face crimes committed by their children.  Directed by Hur Jin-ho (Christmas In August), the cast includes Seol Kyung-gu (Oasis), Claudia Kim (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald), Jang Dong-gun (V.I.P.) and Kim Hee-ae (Moonlit Winter).  Director of cinematography Go Rak-sun, whose credits include A Taxi Driver, is also attached. The film is set to begin post-production, aiming for 2023 release.
