An upcoming period action film starring Ha Jung-woo and Kang Dong-won, and written and directed by Yoon Jong-bin. Set in mid-19th century Joseon, it is about a power struggle between the unjust wealthy noblemen who run society and a group of righteous outlaws who steal from corrupt officials to give to the downtrodden and starving

CASTu327.jpg

PLOTThe year is 1859. The late Joseon dynasty was a period of social and economic unrest in Korea, and it was also a time of great tyranny. Due to continuous natural disasters and poor harvest, poverty, hunger and death are rampant. The aristocracy rule the country, and concerned only with their own wealth, they exploit and persecute the poor.
In these turbulent times, a band of fighters named Kundo rise against the authorities. They raid corrupt officials, then share their booty with the vulnerable and impoverished. While the king stands powerless against them, Kundo becomes a figure of fear to undeserving nobles, and a ray of hope in the lives of long-suffering citizens. The members of Kundo believe that their cause is more important than their own lives.
In an era when one's status is decided by birth, Dolmuchi was born to a poor butcher, while Jo-yoon, though born into a powerful and wealthy family, is illegitimate. The two men strike a dangerous deal and Dolmuchi loses his mother and sister as a result. He is trampled by Jo-yoon who commands absolute power in his oppressive world. Bringing together the men who are on the fringes of this dark society, Dolmuchi is accepted as a member of Kundo and opens his eyes to the world. He draws his sword out of its sheath and disperses the shadow cast on the poor and helpless. Then before him, the man who took away his family appears. Standing in front of Jo-yoon, Dolmuchi challenges his arch-enemy to a final duel

First posters and stills for Ha Jung-woo and Kang Dong-won’s action sageuk
by girlfriday | January 4, 2014 |

Kundo1.jpg

Has it been forever that they’ve been making this movie, or am I just really really impatient and excited to see it? Here’s our first tiny peek at Band of Thieves (also going by the titleKUNDO: Age of the Rampant), starring Ha Jung-woo (The Terror Live) and Kang Dong-won (Psychic) in his feature-length army comeback project. It’s the role Ha Jung-woo shaved his head for, in case you’ve seen him promoting other stuff this past year and wondered why he was suddenly bald.

Part of the anticipation for the project comes from the re-team of writer/director Yoon Jong-bin and leading man Ha Jung-woo, who did 2011′s hugely popular and still-quotedNameless Gangster together, among other projects. Band of Thieves is a swashbuckling action film set in the waning years of the Joseon era, where corrupt officials rule the land and growing discontent among the people sets the stage for a band of outlaws to take over. It’s described as a cathartic action movie where the bad guys who steal from the rich and give to the poor are the heroic incarnation of vigilante justice.

Ha Jung-woo plays the leader of the ragtag band of thieves, and Kang Dong-won plays the nobleman with the best martial arts skills in the land who chases him down. His character should be an interesting bad guy (er, antagonist, since I guess in this movie the bad guys are good and the good guys are bad) since he’s also an illegitimate son and treated like a second-class citizen because of his birthright. I just love both actors so much, and can’t wait for the showdown. Co-starring are Lee Sung-min (Miss Korea), Jo Jin-woong (To the Grave), Ma Dong-seok (Killer), Yoon Ji-hye (Ghost), Jung Man-seok (To the Grave), and Kim Sung-kyun (Answer Me 1994).

Band of Thieves is planning for a summer 2014 release. Seriously. You’re killing me here.

Kang Dong-won to stage comeback

photo268331.jpg

Kang Dong-won has chosen to star in a movie alongside heavyweight actor Ha Jung-woo as he returns to the spotlight. Show Box announced Friday that it has cast both in the production "Band of Thieves".
The movie is about a group of government officials in the 19th-century Joseon Dynasty.
The film will be directed by Yoon Jong-bin, who directed "Nameless Gangster", a Korean blockbuster that exceeded 4.7 million views at the theaters.
Filming will begin early next year and it is Kang's first work since being released from the Army last month. Unlike some of the more public discharges to have taken place this year, Kang's last day of work at the Seoul City Research Institute of Public Health and Environment in Yangjae, southern Seoul, was kept on the down low.
Although his agency told the press he wouldn't be working his last shift, Kang reportedly went to work as usual on Nov. 12 to say goodbye to his co-workers.
Kang managed to remain under the radar by entering and leaving the institute through the parking lot.

Kang Dong-won's come back flick, "Band of Thieves"

photo268173.jpg

Kang Dong-won and Ha Jeong-woo will be filming "Band of Thieves".

Based in the late Chosun, Ha Jeong-woo and Kang Dong-won have confirmed to star in the movie "Band of Thieves".

Ha Jeong-woo, who has been busy with movies "Nameless Gangster", "Love Fiction", "Project 577" and even directing his own movies such as "Roller Coaster", Ha Jeong-woo has confirmed to star in "Band of Thieves". He takes on the role of Dol Mu-chi who becomes at outlaw from being a butcher and shows the life of pressured grass roots in the 19th century.

Actor Kang Dong-won from "Our Happy Time", "JEON WOO CHI : The Taoist Wizard", "Secret Reunion" and others chose "Band of Thieves" as his come back flick. He is Jo Yoon, the son of Jo Dae-gam, a candidate of Naju in Jeolla who has outstanding martial arts skills but isn't acknowledged because he is the son of a concubine.

Director Yoon Jong-bin is in charge of this movie and many have high expectations as he is also the creator of "Nameless Gangster" which gathered 4.7 million people into theaters. Yoon Jong-bin cast actor Ha Jeong-woo whom he's been with since his debut and also managed to get Kang Dong-won to join the boat with him.

Kang Dong-won returns from army, eyes comeback projectby girlfriday | November 7, 2012 | 105 Comments

KangDongWon1.jpg

And another one returns! Kang Dong-won (Psychic, Jeon Woo-chi) has completed his mandatory military service and is reportedly already back to civilian life. He made his exit from army duty as quietly as he went in, choosing to avoid the press and usual fanfare. There’s already talk about his comeback project, though it’s still in the “considering” stage: he’s in talks to star in the action historical film Band of Thieves slated for next year, opposite Ha Jung-woo.

The movie is the next project from director Yoon Jong-bin, of Nameless Gangster, Beastie Boys, and The Unforgiven — all starring Ha Jung-woo, by the way. They must be besties, or he just really really likes Ha Jung-woo (not that I blame him of course). Nameless Gangster, also called War With Criminals: The Golden Age of Bad Guys was a box office hit earlier this year, though with the sheer number of commercially successful movies in 2012, it’s now just one of the many. But he’s a young director with buzz, enough to garner excitement over this new project that literally has a one-line description.

Band of Thieves is an action sageuk set in the Joseon era, and in keeping with Yoon’s gangster repertoire, it’ll be about a group of bandits. Same dudes, different costumes? Ha Jung-woo has already signed on to star as the hero, and Kang Dong-won is being wooed to play the villain. Though in a story about thieves, I’m not sure which is the good guy or the bad guy, or if they’re all thieves and just antagonistic about it.

Kang Dong-won’s reps are being careful not to attach him to anything too hastily; he’s one of the industry’s most bankable stars and there’s always a whole host of expectations surrounding The Comeback, so we’ll have to see how things shake out. But I’d love to see him return to the big screen in a badass sageuk.

The movie plans to start shooting first thing in the new year.

Kang Dong-won and Ha Jung-woo confirm Band of Thieves

by girlfriday | December 14, 2012 | 34 Comments

KangDongWon11-1.jpg

Eeeeeeee! Kang Dong-won and Ha Jung-woo in one movie? Did they make it just for me? Just lie and tell me they did. Kang Dong-won has confirmed the first of his post-army projects: he’ll be co-starring with Ha Jung-woo in the action sageuk film Band of Thieves. The two actors have signed on to play mortal enemies in a 19th-century story about a Robin Hood type of character (or Iljimae, or Hong Gil-dong — take your stealin’-from-the-rich-to-give-to-the-poor hero archetype pick) who rises up in an oppressed society.

It’s the fourth project from director Yoon Jong-bin, of this year’s hit film Nameless Gangster (aka War With Criminals: The Golden Age of Bad Guys), and also Beastie Boys, and The Unforgiven. He has the uncommon distinction of being four-for-four with projects starring Ha Jung-woo, which naturally sent me on a google mission to figure out what the connection is. Turns out they went to the same university, and are only a year apart in age, which explains a whole lot. So Ha Jung-woo is his film school sunbae, explaining why he’d star in every single one of this guy’s movies, even when he was an unknown (though now of course he’s a hot commodity). Aaaaaand now the world makes sense again.

Anyway, the movie is set in 19th-century Joseon, and will be about a power struggle between the corrupt wealthy noblemen who run society and a band of thieves that rises up to challenge them. Ha Jung-woo plays the hero, Dol Moo-chi, a butcher who forms a makeshift family of thieves that sets out on a mission to change the lives of the oppressed people. Kang Dong-won plays the richest nobleman’s son, Jo-yoon, the best swordsman in the land. But it turns out he isn’t acknowledged by his father because he’s the son of a concubine, and lives a wayward life because of it.

I wonder if that means they’ll start as enemies but not end up the same, which would be great fun. But really, you could tell me they were playing a pair of dancing penguins and I’d still watch that movie. Though it would be decidedly less badass.

Band of Thieves is planning on a 2013 release. I may have to break a few fourth dimension rules for this. *revs up time machine*

More news on Band of Thieves as it gears up to begin production: The film is an upcoming action film featuring a Robin Hood-y story of a Joseon hero who steals from corrupt rich noblemen and stands up for the disenfranchised masses, which is surprisingly becoming sort of a commonplace setup in dramaland these days. (You’ve got your Hong Gil-dongs, Iljimaes, and Jeon Woo-chis, each with multiple versions explored in various projects in recent years.) Still, doesn’t mean a new spin on the familiar story can’t be awesome.

And why wouldn’t it be, with this cast? It’s already been announced that Ha Jung-woowould play the butcher turned righteous-bandit hero, while Kang Dong-won would be making his post-army comeback as his enemy, an officer possessing top-notch fighting skills. They’re on opposite ends of the social hierarchy, since butchers occupied the very bottom of society while Kang Dong-won is the son of a nobleman. Although, his illegitimacy keeps him from full acceptance even in his own world, and I’ll bet that comes into play in a significant way.

Kim Min-hee (Moby richard simmons, Actresses) is the latest addition to the bunch, which should make for fun — she’s got a bubbly energy that can really brighten the screen. She’s not a done deal yet and some reports state that she’s considering the movie favorably, but it does sound as though she’s close to signing on the dotted line. Her role would be one of the members of thief pack. How glad am I that she’s not just another nobleman’s pretty daughter, here to romance both men? Not that I’m against the romancing itself. Romance away! Just, you know, in between her badass raids and action moves and corruption-busting.

Band of Thieves is set to begin filming in March, and aims to release early next year.

photo380363.jpg
The first keyword is 'historical movies' and the second is the change which actors are going through.

They are all 10 billion dollar blockbusters. They are also movies the Big 3 distributors CJ Entertainment, Lotte Entertainment and Showbox Media Plex have on the line.
A distributor claims, "Many distributors came up with historical movies after the 2012 movie "Masquerade" and naturally lined up to be released next year. There's lots to see in these historical dramas and the intense storyline and performance of the cast are drawing anticipation".
Seol Kyeong-gu, Jeong Woo-seong and Hyeon Bin's performances are also highly anticipated. Seol Kyeong-gu is attempting at his twentieth movie and first historical with Kang Woo-seok's "Two Cops Zero: Two Constables". Jeong Woo-seong is starring in the modern version of "The Story of Sim-cheong" called, "Madam Bluff". After this movie, he will start filming for the next movie tentatively titled “Not Proven.”

The film will focus on the tensions and conflicts between the lord’s family trying to hold on to their wealth and power and the Robinhood-esque butcher, Dol Muchi performed by top actor Ha Jung-woo.
