Han-Suk-Kyu-1.jpg

If the stars align, we might see Kim Nam Gil and Han Seok Kyu reunited with Kim Young Hyun, the writer behind hit dramas Queen Seon Deok and Tree with Deep Roots. The two of them are currently being courted to star in political action sageuk drama Pacheonhwang, which is touted as a prequel to Tree with Deep Roots. Of course, the reports come with the usual caveats that the actors are still considering the offer, but Han Seok Kyu’s casting looks like a very real possibility since the production staff are reportedly ensuring that there would be no conflicts with the actor’s schedule.

Pacheonwang is set in the formulative years of the Joseon dynasty and revolves around the political conflict between Yi Bang Won, son of King Taejo, the founder of the Joseon dynasty, and Jeong Do Jeon, a politician and advisor to King Taejo whose enormous influence saw him shape much of Joseon’s legal, ideological, religious and political foundations. Jeong Do Jeon was the staunchest opposition to Yi Bang Won’s bid to be appointed crown prince and the conflict eventually led to Jeong Do Jeon’s death and considerable bloodshed otherwise.

At the helm will be PD Park Hong Kyun, which will mean a reunion for him with Writers Kim Young Hyun and Park Sang Yeon – they worked together in 2009 on Queen Seon Deok. This director-writer team essentially signals “ratings, ratings, ratings.” The drama is planned for a 2014 air date after Empress Ki wraps up.

All hail — the true kings and queens of sageuk are returning. That’d be the creative people behind Queen Seon-deok and Tree With Deep Roots, otherwise known as midas touch writers Kim Young-hyun and Park Sang-yeon. They have the distinction of writing “well-made sageuk” (just a moniker for high production value) that also gets good ratings, which is not a thing to trifle with in dramaland. The new project is called Unprecedented, which has successfully set my expectations sky high with the title alone. I hope you weren’t trying to undersell the thing, ’cause then you might want to call it something a little less auspicious.

They’re reteaming with Queen Seon-deok’s director Park Hong-kyun, who directed the Hong Sisters rom-com Best Love in the years since Seon-deok and New Heart. The new drama is months away from broadcast at the earliest, and is being planned as a special presentation drama at MBC for 2014.

It’s a political action drama set in early Joseon, and specifically about “the heroes who founded the nation.” The central story will be Jung Do-jeon vs. Lee Bang-won. Jung Do-jeon was a scholar and advisor to King Taejo (first king of Joseon), who influenced the political future of the country for centuries to come, by designing the political infrastructure from laws to taxes to education. In short, he was the political brains behind the founding of Joseon.

Lee Bang-won was the fifth son of King Taejo, and future King Taejong of Joseon (father of Sejong the Great). While Jung Do-jeon believed in a political system governed by ministers and a centralized bureaucracy, Lee Bang-won believed in an absolute monarchy. He was overlooked to succeed his father to the throne because of Jung Do-jeon’s influence, and so during the reign of his brother, he raided the palace, killed Jung Do-jeon, and became the third king.

It’s pretty much as high-stakes as a political thriller can get for source material, and it’ll be like a prequel to Tree With Deep Roots, which will be fun. I can’t wait till they start casting calls for the two leads who will battle it out for Joseon’s future.

Unprecented is headed to MBC in 2014.

Will the dream team come back together again?

Sensational drama of the year 2011, "Deep-rooted Tree" team of writers and cast might come back together.

"Pacheon-hwang" is a political action drama written by Kim Yeong-hyeon and Park Sang-yeon. This is known as a prequel to "Deep-rooted Tree".

According to several people, Han Seok-Kyu is being named as one of the lead actors.

Han Seok-Kyu played the role of a humanist King Se-jong, who also used profanity throughout the drama. This role earned him the Best Actor Award at the SBS Acting Awards.

If he decides to climb on board, this will be his first MBC drama in 18 years. He last starred in the 1995 drama "Hotel" and has been starring in movies only ever since.

Meanwhile, another weighty actor is being mentioned for another leading role.

In the meantime:Cha Seung-won considers drama return in Unprecedentedby javabeans | December 27, 2013 | 13 Comments

More Cha Seung-won in dramaland is always a good thing, but it’s particularly worth noting when the parties involved are as high-profile and hit-making as the ones forUnprecedented, a political sageuk from the Tree With Deep Roots writers and Queen Seon-deok director. Cha is not confirmed, just considering, but I’d love to see him in a tense historical thriller.

MBC greenlights Dae Jang Geum 2, puts brakes on Unprecedented

...However, while one drama secured its space on the schedule, another has lost its slot: Sageuk series Unprecedented (from the Tree With Deep Roots writers) is getting “postponed indefinitely.” It’s not losing out directly to Dae Jang Geum 2, but the two scenarios are somewhat related. Unprecedented (planned for 50 episodes) had been angling for the Monday-Tuesday slot after Empress Ki ends in April, but with Dae Jang Geum 2 on the books for fall, the schedules don’t quite line up.
