Q: Casting for AM1994 was ingenious. What is still amazing is how you thought to cast Kim Sung Kyun for the role of Samcheonpo. It’s not something anyone would have thought of.

Shin Won Ho PD: One day after a meeting, we went to a quiet theater in Sangam-dong to watch a movie. Whenever a meeting doesn’t go well, the writers and I would often go see a movie together. On that day, there was no other movie to watch but one called The Gangster Shaman. As it wasn’t a movie I was particularly interested in, I watched it without much expectation but instead, I ended up enjoying it. It is a film that appeals to those who do variety shows. In particular, actor Kim Sung Kyun caught my eyes. I wondered to myself how it would turn out if that actor from The Gangster Shaman played a simple, naive character. Wearing a different hat, I thought it would be possible to get an entirely different feel out of him. Since then, I became fixated on Kim Sung Kyun, and that’s how Samcheonpo came about. And so if Kim Sung Kyun refused this role till the end, we would have gotten rid of Samcheonpo character entirely. As we worked together, I learned that [Kim Sung Kyun] was a very hard-working and kind-hearted person. I think that’s yet another reason why he really fits Samcheonpo so well. I even told Sung Kyun, “Even if this drama fails, I’ve gained you.”

Kim Sung Kyun was threatened by the producer to avoid French kissing Dohee in 'Reply 1994'

Actor Kim Sung Kyun, who garnered immense popularity for his role as Sam Cheon Po in 'Reply 1994,' recently sat down for an interview with StarNews, revealing a funny and interesting behind-the-scenes story for his kiss scene with Dohee.
He said, "I was preparing to film for the kiss scene when Producer Shin Won Ho came close to me from behind and said something in my ear. He said quietly so that Dohee would not hear, 'I will kill you if you use tongue,'" and then the actor laughed.

Kim Sung Kyun continued, "But I had no intention of using my tongue, anyway . . . I did not dare think of something like that because Dohee was so young and I did not want her to get hurt.

Because it was a scene with a simple peck, it was not an awkward situation for us. We were most concerned about the timing because we had to match the sunrise for this scene; hence, it was not the time for being nervous, hesitating, or sharing feelings."

Lastly, he said, "What I remember best from that day was seasickness . . . Dohee also had a really hard time with seasickness, which was likewise no joke for the staff members. Thankfully, the sunrise came out very nicely so I felt really great despite the pains."

Kim Sung Kyun to make a cameo on 'Cunning Single Lady'February 28, 2014 @ 3:01 amkim-sung-kyun_1393553475_af_org.jpg

Kim Sung Kyun will bring his 'Sam Chun Po' charms for his cameo on new MBC drama 'Cunning Single Lady'!

The actor is making a cameo on the third and fourth episodes as the security team chief of Cha Jung Woo's (Joo Sang Wook) company D&T Soft Ventures. He'll be butting heads with Na Ae Ra (Lee Min Jung) when he investigates her as a suspect in the company's data leakage.

Kim Sung Kyun stated, "It's been a while since I've stood in front of the camera following 'Reply 1994', and as 'Cunning Single Lady' is a sweet romantic comedy genre, I enjoyed filming throughout. I acted out a security team chief who's lacking a little bit of something, and although it's a short cameo, I hope you have fun watching it... It is a fun drama, so I look forward to its live broadcast and I will always cheer [the cast] on as a viewer."

'Cunning Single Lady' airs every Thursday and Friday at 10 PM KST.

Honorary Ambassadors Han Ji-min and Kim Sung-kyun Kickstart Barrier Free Film Festival
Each year it seems like there are more unusual film festivals that surface in Korea - there is an animal film festival, an environmental film festival, another movie event to celebrate multiculturalism, festivals for indie films and the like.

image
But no doubt one of the most noble movie events is the Barrier-Free Film Festival, which provides a chance for those with hearing and visual impairments to encounter some of the latest films. The festival is taking place at the Korean Film Archive’s Cinematheque theater in Sangam-dong, western Seoul, where several movies are being screened with subtitles and audio commentary tracks over four days.

image
At the opening yesterday, actress Han Hyo-joo and director Huh Jin-ho joined honorary ambassadors Han Ji-min and Kim Sung-kyun to kick off the event. The opening ceremony was followed by a 20-minute audio performance called “Way to the Dark Cafe” in which the audience encountered what it is like being visually impaired; this section was modelled on the world-renowned exhibition and workshop “Dialogue in the Dark.” The opening film was the Italian drama “Red Like the Sky.”

201311281943201129_1.jpgToday at the Cinematheque, a forum examines the Japanese case of incorporating subtitles and audio commentary for impaired viewers. Seven films will be screened until Sunday, closing with “The Terror Live.” 2PM’s Junho provided the audio commentary for the film.
