On the November 2 broadcast of SBS’ variety program “Roommate Season 2,” senior actor Lee Soon Jae paid a visit to the ‘Roommate’ house to spend time with the cast members.

Lee Soon Jae is close with Girls’ Generation member Sunny after first meeting through tvN’s “Grandpas Over Flowers,” and the two of them maintained their close relationship even after coming back from vacation and filming the show.

During his visit, Lee Soon Jae asked Sunny a number of playful questions that caught her off guard, such as, “You’re no longer ‘Girls’ Generation’ but ‘Women’s Generation,’ right?” and “You’re at that age [to get married]. Does Lee Seo Jin not contact you anymore?”, displaying their family-like closeness.

In response to the actor’s unexpected questions, Sunny said, “Until when are you going to ask that? There’s almost a 20-year age difference between us (Sunny and Lee Seo Jin),” laughing as she was unable to hide her flustered state. Lee Son Jae replied, “Age gaps are nothing these days,” causing Sunny and Bae Jong Ok to burst into laughter.

“Youth Over Flowers,” Non- Summit” Spearhead 2014 Syndrome

The year 2014 was a great one for cable channels tvN and JTBC. Both channels experimented with new forms of entertainment programs and succeeded in winning the viewers’ approval. Here are some of the cable channel shows that received as much, if not more, love as terrestrial channel programs.

◆From ”Flower” series to “Go Office”… Real Entertainment 
tvN received more love this year than in any other year. Their entertainment programs such as “Grandpas Over Flowers Season 2,” “Youth Over Flowers (Peru, Laos),” and “Three Meals a Day” triggered a “reality syndrome.” The last of the three, “Three Meals a Day,” is an outdoor reality program in which top celebrities cook for themselves in a remote countryside. The program is receiving great reviews from the viewers as Lee Seo-jin and Taekyeon’s self-sustainable lifestyle is stirring nostalgia for the country life as well as ambition to take on the challenge one day. 

Meanwhile, “Go Office” is resonating with office workers. This reality show quietly follows the celebrities as they experience the real office life. Seeing these celebrities as newly recruited employees has the viewers laughing all throughout the program. It is almost like an entertainment version of the drama “Misaeng.” 
 
◆”Non-summit” and “Off to School” syndrome 
JTBC generated a syndrome this year with “Non-Summit” and “Off to School.” “Non-Summit” became a sensation with its cast of foreigners representing their respective countries who talk frankly about their impressions of Korea. Although the unconventional and daring perspectives of the talk show were not without controversies, the program generated countless issues and enjoyed extensive popularity. Thanks to the syndrome, the viewers’ interest in Sam Okyere, Guillaume Patry, Takyua and other cast members and what they say shows no signs of abating.

“Off to School” is a show that started another syndrome in the last half of this year. 
Ambitiously conceived to become friends with the current high school students who are studying hard for their dreams and future, “Off to School” captured the ups and downs of school life of nostalgic, grown-up celebrities and high school students who are eager to grow up fast. The unpredictable, unimaginable real happenings at school added to the fun of the program.

From ‘Misaeng’ to ‘Grandpas over Flowers,’ cable TV shows set trends

Kim Jun-hyung, a 32-year-old Seoulite, used to think local TV dramas were for “ajummas” ― a Korean term for middle-aged housewives ― until he accidentally watched the first episode of tvN’s “Misaeng (Incomplete Life).” 

“I could relate to the characters instantly because I am just as overworked as they are,” he said about the popular show, which is about the everyday lives of office workers at a competition-driven trading company.

“I loved how there is no romance for some lazy chaebol character who never works but worries about his girl problems 24/7.” 

Experts say the rise of cable channels ― which is posing a threat to the long-dominance of the nation’s three big public broadcasters, MBC, KBS and SBS ― has to do with serving the interests of the younger generation, especially those in their 20s and 30s. The results include a frank, late-night talk show about sex and dating (JTBC’s “Witch Hunt”), a travel show in which veteran actors face challenges in foreign countries (tvN’s “Grandpas over Flowers”) and a poignant tale of a young, struggling contract worker (tvN’s “Misaeng”).

“This is making the cable channels trendsetters,” said culture critic Lee Moon-won. “Trends and changes are inseparable. And those who bring changes to society are usually those who are young and those who desire and seek something different.”

Lee said that unlike public broadcasters, cable TV channels don’t have to “please everyone of every age group” and this has worked in their favor. 

According to Lee, the largest demographic of viewers of public broadcasters’ drama series is women in their 40s and 50s, and this has resulted in a flourishing number of family dramas and romance or adultery flicks in the last 20 years. 

“Many dramas by public broadcasters, especially family dramas, are based on the perspectives of those in their 50s and 60s,” he said. 

“Those shows don’t really portray the unique, realistic challenges that are endured by those in their 20s and even 30s today. In many family dramas, young people are portrayed as ungrateful and spoiled, while the elderly are often portrayed as the wisest people in the house.”

Cable channel tvN’s travel show, “Grandpas over Flowers,” is a great example of understanding today’s young Korean viewers, including their perspectives, Lee said. 

The show chronicles the travels of four veteran actors in their 70s as they visit countries including Taiwan, France and Spain. The men have different tastes and personalities; one complains about the heat, while another constantly takes pictures of the scenery and sends them to his dear wife. 

“In one scene, the four actors hang out with Sunny, one of the members of popular girl group Girls’ Generation,” Lee said. 

“And one of the actors asks her, ‘Does Soo-man pay you well?’ referring to Lee Soo-man, the entertainment mogul and head of SM Entertainment. I think many young viewers found it refreshing that these men call Lee Soo-man ― the man who produced so many of today’s K-pop stars ― by his given name. It connected today’s pop culture with these men in their 70s, who have been in the local entertainment industry for more than 50 years.”

Yoon Ha-young, a 30-year-old office worker in Seoul who enjoyed the show, shared a similar view. “The general notion is that the elderly are used to being guided or assisted by those who are younger,” she said. 

“But it does not work like that anymore once they are alone in foreign countries. They are rarely put into such situations. So when they struggle to find their hotel from the airport in a foreign country, it’s not something that’s dramatic but it’s still entertaining. I think creating this unique situation faced by the characters (in their 70s) was the whole purpose of the show.”

Critic Ha Jae-geun, who also said the majority of drama series produced by the public broadcasters are about conventional romances, chaebol stories and adultery, said cable TV channels manage to bring more reality into their shows.

“I think ‘Misaeng’ is one of the best shows produced this year,” he said. 

“I don’t think public broadcasters would choose to produce shows like ‘Misaeng’ that do not include any romance.”

Ha pointed out that even romance and adultery shows have an edge when cable channels make them. JTBC’s “Secret Love Affair,” about a successful middle-aged woman (played by Kim Hee-ae) who marries into a chabeol family and has an extramarital affair with a pianist in his 20s (Yoo Ah-in), is more than a simple love story, he said. 

The show, which enjoyed both popularity and attention for its controversial subject matter, aired from March to May.

“No other TV drama series have dealt with chaebol families and their companies from such a critical angle as ‘Secret Love Affair,’” Ha said. “Most drama shows (by the public broadcasters) would depict highly romanticized chaebol characters as those who have it all ― wealthy, good-looking and even kind.” 

In spite of the success of cable channels, both Ha and Lee said it was unlikely that the public broadcasters would become more like their threatening competitors.

“They are public broadcasters, after all,” Lee said. 

“They can’t give up a certain group of people to please the other.”

It looks like tvN variety program “Grandpas Over Flowers” is heading to the Middle East to kick off its third season.
Sources affiliated with the show have revealed that the cast will soon be heading to Jordan to begin filming for the third season. The cast and crew are currently preparing to depart before the Lunar New Year holiday, they said.
When asked about the upcoming season, director Na Young Suk had little to say, replying, “It’s difficult for me to talk about ‘Grandpas Over Flowers’ right now. Filming for ‘Three Meals a Day’ is still going on, so I can’t talk too much about ‘Grandpas’ yet.” Another affiliate of the show stated that the destination has not been finalized, and Jordan is simply one of the candidates.
“Grandpas Over Flowers” is a program that focuses on several grandfather-actors and their world travels. It features Lee Soon Jae, Shin Gu, Park Geun Hyung, and Baek Il Sup, along with “bag boy” Lee Seo Jin. Season one featured the cast in Europe and Taiwan, and the grandfathers travelled to Spain for season two.

‘Grandpas’ may visit Jordan next

The next destination for the popular reality TV show “Grandpas Over Flowers” will be a Middle Eastern country, according to multiple local media reports Thursday. 
Of the many nations in the region, news agencies reported that Jordan is the most likely destination for the grandpas, who are in their 70s. 
According to reports, the actors will hit the road before the Lunar New Year holidays begin. 
This year, the Lunar New Year falls on Feb. 19. 
The popular reality TV show, in which actors in their 70s go on backpacking trips, first began airing July 2013. The actors have been to Europe, Taiwan and Spain so far. 
Nobody anticipated how much of a hit the TV show would be, but the first and second seasons of the show recorded a high viewership rating. 
The show is produced by Na Young-seok, who is also responsible for “Three Meals a Day,” another popular reality TV show. 
It intrigued many viewers because the four grandfathers and actor Lee Seo-jin, who plays the tour guide in the show, have an intriguing and humorous rapport between them.

Yay, the halbaes are coming back! It’s been nearly a year since travel variety showGrandpas Over Flowers aired its last trip in March 2014, but rumblings are afoot for a Season 3 headed to tvN this spring. Technically it would be their fourth trip after Paris, Taiwan, and Spain, and though producers are being careful to leave all options open, rumors are that Jordan is the next destination. I wonder if Misaeng had anything to do with that; they did make it look adventurous and exotic. Or is it that even halbaes think they’re Jang Geu-rae too?

Naturally, the original cast will return (otherwise they’d have an uproar on their hands). Halbaes Lee Soon-jae, Shin Gu, Park Geun-hyung, and Baek Il-sub, along with Luggage Boy Lee Seo-jin will be reuniting, with tentative plans to head out for a trip sometime in February.

PD Na Young-seok released a statement that Grandpas is still in early planning stages, and that Three Meals a Day: Fishing Village is his current priority. That’s putting it mildly, given the recent change-up that took Jang Geun-seok away and brought Sohn Ho-joon in to replace him, leading to a week’s delay in premiering the show to edit Jang Geun-seok out.

Given that Seo-jinnie has to eventually return to the farm for the spring season of Three Meals a Day, I don’t know how they’re going to squeeze in another Grandpas trip. It cracks me up that Na PD has managed to book Lee Seo-jin pretty much year-round for variety shows, when all he does is complain that he doesn’t want to be there.

Lucky for us, Seo-jinnie’s grumpy protests never stopped Na PD from getting him on a plane (or anyone else for that matter). The plan is to shoot a new season of Grandpas Over Flowers in February and air by the spring.

Grandpas Over Flowers has chosen Greece as its new destination.
According to multiple broadcasting affiliates, the production team of tvN’s Grandpas Over Flowers has chosen Greece as the new travel destination and is currently preparing for the trip. The team has recently returned from doing a field study.

"Grandpas over Flowers," a cable network tvN's reality-travel show starring actors in their 70s travelling around world, will travel to Greece this time, the show's producer Na Young-seok said, Monday.
"The crew members have already finished on-site survey. The actors will leave for Greece this weekend," Na said.
Na added that they changed their travel destination from Jordan to Greece as many were concerned about safety problem in Middle East area.
Comprised of veteran actors including Baek Il-seob, Shin Goo, Lee Soon-jae, Park Geun-hyung and 44-year-old actor Lee Seo-jin as their travel guide, the show follows their global backpacking travels in France, Swiss, Taiwan and Spain.
Their trip to Greece will be broadcasted in March.

‘Grandpas’ head to Greece for travel show
Cable travel variety program “Grandpas over Flowers” has decided on Greece as the destination for its third season, local news reported Monday.
Producer Na Young-suk said the program makers chose Greece because of its warm weather and safety, as well as its abundant tourist attractions.

“We took the grandpas’ opinions into account. They suggested Greece as the destination. I hope viewers will find third season fun and interesting. The viewers might be able to enjoy different kinds of fun from previous seasons. ” 
The cast and crew are scheduled to head to Greece on Feb. 15 and will shoot for the program for 10 days. 
“Grandpas over Flowers,” broadcast on tvN, follows senior-actors as they travel abroad. The cast includes Lee Soon-jae, Shin Gu, Park Geun-hyung, Baek Il-Seop and Lee Seo-jin. 
The exact date of broadcast is yet to be confirmed, but is expected to be from late March to early April, following the conclusion of “Punch.”
