Not yet finding somewhere else quicker to release more episodes with subtitles. This drama isn't the one attracting fansubs (beside the original KBS World) like others, so we can't help but waiting. :-S
"Jeong Do Jeon" Yoo Dong Geun (Lee Seong Gye) VS. Park Young Gyu (Lee In Yim)

Yoo Dong Geun (Lee Seong Gye) was seen in an intense moment with Park Young Gyu (Lee In Yim)
KBS 1TV weekend drama "Jeong Do Jeon" showed Lee Seong Gye (Yoo Dong Geun) and Lee In Yim (Park Young Gyu) in a mentally heightened moment with each other.
Lee Seong Gye was having a relaxing time one day when he received a message that his second wife Kang (Lee Il Hwa) was sick and rushed to her side.
However, this was a lie created by Kang to bring in her husband and Lee Seong Gye had no choice but to listen to her asking him to stay until victory was decided in Jinpo.
Lee Seong Gye entered the palace and ran into Lee In Yim. News of Jinpo's victory was soon heard of. Lee Seong Gye explained that he came up because his wife was sick but Lee In Yim was cynical about it and said, "This is disappointing. I have no work for you to do."

The drama has become really interesting. I'm hoping to see a really showy battle of wits between the talented politicians.
Here are some information regarding the aforementioned "Battle of Jinpo." The Battle of Jinpo (1380) was a resounding victory for Koryo, which was the first occasion on which the new technology was tested in action (gunpowder), and was over very quickly with 80 Koryo warships, equipped with firearms invented by Choi Mu Seon, defeated a Japanese pirate fleet of 500 vessels.
The follow-up battle three years later ended similarly for the pirates, and provoked a more proactive approach on the part of the Koryo government, who decided to take the fight to the pirates at their base on Tsushima Island, which is in the middle of Japan and Korea and it officially belongs to Japan; and there's no conflict between the two about sovereignty on this island.
In the 1380s, as Koryo’s campaign against the wako (literally: Japanese pirates, "Wa" ancient Japan) proved successful, Japan began to show greater interest in pursuing an amicable relationship, frequently sending emissaries to offer tribute and return captives. It is possible that the newly revealed power of Koryo’s naval artillery influenced this change of attitude.
Moreover, in 1597, in the famous battle of Myeong-nang during the Imjin War, Admiral Lee Soon Shin commanded Joseon Navy with 13 battleships and won over 130 battleships of Japanese Naval force by destroying 31 of them while having 1 ship of his fleet sunk, eventually forcing the Japanese army retreating to Busan.

Same here, I haven't started watching this drama yet, since there's only 1 episode got subbed. I'll wait until mass released of the subbed episodes and watch the whole thing, because I don't really like my pleasure being interrupted in middle. Thus, I'll watch something else during the waiting period and check out for what the media says about this drama.
"Jeong Do Jeon" is finally on KBS World's broadcasting list, the first 2 episodes will air on this week's Saturday and Sunday, which is Feb 8th and 9th at 9:40 pm, Korean time.
Unique historical drama tries putting history first
photo398232.jpg

Jeong Do Jeon, left, the 14th-century politician and scholar, is in the spotlight these days because of a new KBS drama that stars Jo Jae-hyeon, right. Critics say people's thirst for ideal leadership is playing a central role in the popularity of the drama.[JoongAng Ilbo]
Korea's historical dramas these days offer a lot to enjoy - they add fanciful re-creations, sumptuous costumes, dynamic action, sexy female characters and, of course, romance.
Yet that wasn't always the case. Rewind about 20 years or so, and epic dramas in Korea played out more like history textbooks. But they worked, somehow, and were often the most popular shows of their time slots. KBS in particular was known for its well-made historical dramas.
But can epic dramas survive nowadays just staying true to history, without embellishing facts. Many might shake their heads at the idea and disagree. But KBS's "Jeong Do Jeon", a historical drama that began on Jan. 4, is proving to be a resounding success.
The drama is about Jeong Do Jeon (1342-1398), a noted government official and scholar whose life spanned the end of the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) and the start of the Joseon Dyansty (1392-1910). For many Koreans, he is best known as a visionary who was the architect of Joseon society.
After two years of planning and 13.5 billion won ($12.5 million), the drama is enjoying solid ratings and is being hailed as the most "authentic and realistic" historical drama in quite a while.
It's certainly different from recent historical dramas, which fuse history and imagined elements, like MBC's "Empress Ki", SBS's "Jang Ok Jeong, Live for Love" and MBC's "The Sun and the Moon".
Over its first six episodes, which aired from Jan. 4 to Jan. 19, the show's average ratings stood at 12 percent, according to Nielsen Korea. The figure is quite solid, considering that it's a weekend evening drama.
The drama's characters have become the most-searched terms on web portals, and the drama's official website received about 500 posts in its first two weeks.
More history, less imagination
To create "Jeong Do Jeon", the production team formed an advisory panel that consisted of history experts, all with doctorates or master's degrees in Korean history, concentrating on the era in which Jeong lived.
The cast members also attended a 4 month course taught by famed historian Lee Deok Il on Confucianism and the various government regulations that were created with the start of the Joseon era.
(While Goryeo's national religion was Buddhism, Joseon was built strictly upon Confucian values.)
Head writer Jeong Hyun Min in particular worked hard to get the history right. He perused many books on the Goryeo times, as well as biographies of the figures in the drama.
"All of the titles held by the characters are the exact match to the government positions that the actual figures assumed at the time", he said, "My main goal was to maintain the truth of history as much as possible".
Casting veteran actors like Jo Jae Hyun (who plays Jeong Do Jeon), Park Young Gyu and Yoo Dong Geun - who have been in the industry for decades, acting both in dramas and films - also helped people to take the drama seriously.
"The drama could be better in terms of computer graphics and music", pop culture critic Kim Ju Ok said, "but just looking at these veteran actors altogether is quite pleasant".
Im Young Ho, a mass media professor at Pusan National University, also said the drama shows "the power of looking squarely at history, amidst all the cute, romantic historical dramas".
Politics take center stage
"If you capture the hearts of the people, the people obey you. But if you fail to win their hearts, they will indeed betray you".
The production team quoted these words by Jeong Do Jeon in their production notes on the drama's website.
Some observers say the political situation in Korea at the moment - with liberals and conservatives locked in power games, both blamed for neglecting the issues that really matter to people - is quite similar to the setting of "Jeong Do Jeon".
The drama is set in the years between 1374, the final year of King Gongmin (1330-1374) of Goryeo, to the year in which Jeong died. Those times were marked by political chaos, as well as government officials and scholars who dreamed of a new dynasty and a new era.
In fact, head writer Jeong worked as an aide to several Korean lawmakers before changing jobs. Jeong worked for a decade assisting 10 lawmakers from both the ruling Saenuri Party and the main opposition Democratic Party.
"Jeong has experienced various aspects of the political spectrum in the field", said Kim Hyeong Il, the drama's chief producer. "He can approach an event from various aspects, and I believe such an ability is important for historical dramas. That's why I suggested that he write the drama".
A hit with middle-aged men
n694fAw.jpg

The viewers of "Jeong Do Jeon", unlike other dramas, are men over the age of 40.
Critics say that, until now, Jeong Do Jeon has been portrayed as a traitor to the Goryeo Dynasty. But after looking at the historical records, the drama team decided Jeong was actually someone who loved the people and believed the people were the most important part of running a country.
One of the first scenes in the drama is about how corrupt government officials forced meaningless labor upon people. Indignant, Jeong goes to the house of Lee In Yim, one of the leaders of the corrupt government officials, and throws his excrement at the gate.
"Jeong was a government official and intellectual who was rational and practical", said Kang Byung Taek, one of the drama's producers. "The two are important values in Korea today".
Kim, the chief producer, also said, "It appears that many middle-aged men share the feelings of achievement and failure that Jeong and other characters felt as they ran the country".
Culture observers say that the thirst by men for good political dramas and new political leadership has already been attested to with the popularity of recent films like "The Attorney" (2013) and "Masquerade" (2012), and the TV drama "Deep-rooted Tree" (2011).
"The public always anticipates and is disappointed by politics", one drama production chief said. "When an important politician from the past is recreated in pop culture, it can be quite influential".
Books and shows
Another factor that has contributed to the success of "Jeong Do Jeon" is the recent publication of books on Jeong's life.
The history books led MBC to also plan a drama about the pivotal scholar. However, the success of KBS's program has caused MBC to postpone its plans indefinitely.
In addition, KBS worked to create synergy with its history talk show, "The Day, History Journal", which runs at 10:30 p.m. on Sundays, right after "Jeong Do Jeon" finishes. Since the drama's first episode, the history talk show has dealt with Jeong, the fall of Goryeo and the rise of Joseon over three consecutive episodes. The history talk show invites not just historians as panel members, but also poets, film directors and pop culture critics.
Although that collaboration lasted only for three episodes, many in the media industry say it was a new approach that will likely continue in the entertainment business.

Another detailed and deep-thought review about the first episode.
Jeong Do Jeon Episode 1: "We Can't Crack a Rock with an Egg, Yet It Is the Wind that Breaks Trees and the Waves that Carve Rocks."
Just the first episode of Jeong Do Jeon provided much food for thought, so I think I'm going to love this historical Korean drama. There were also many great dialogue scenes that make you think. You will find yourself nodding your head in agreement only to stop and nod again as someone counters with the opposite meaning. Yet you can see there's truth in both perspectives. For example, when the scholars were arguing over whether or not they should protest to the King about his wasteful spending on the shrine of his deceased wife and lack of caring about the people, one scholar explained that you cannot jump into a fire holding a straw. Another agreed and told Do Jeon “we can't crack a rock with an egg.”
Do Jeon replied, “It is the wind that breaks trees and the waves that carve rocks.” While both quotes have truth in them, I agree with everyone else in the drama about Do Jeon failing to recognize how terrible the timing is. It's noble that he wants to stand up for what's right. And I do understand where he's coming from but one problem is his death won't change a thing. The only way he has a chance at changing the world is to stay alive. Thus, he really can't make a move yet or else he'll end up in big trouble.
This reality was illustrated when Do Jeon protested by sitting on his knees outside and refusing to move until his appeal was accepted. The guard warned him to move or else they would have to beat him when the bell rang. Do Jeon remained kneeling. However, once the King was being carried over with his personel, even he jumped to his feet with a face expression that indicates he knew he would be in trouble. He stands there without moving and fortunately for him, his friend rushes over and forces him off to the side into a bowing position on the ground. His friend tells him the truth “They'll cut off your head before you even open your mouth.” Do Jeon at least listened to him in that moment, otherwise the drama might have been over already.
From what I've said so far, it might sound like the King is a bad man. But he's actually not that bad. The King is going through a deep depression because his wife died and the officials essentially do what they want instead of listening to him. He used to care about the people and worked for them but the pressure of having to deal with corrupted men day in and day out finally got to him. He's at the point where he's going off the deep end due to a combination of mourning over his wife's death and losing hope in improving the living conditions for the people. It makes me sad to see the King like that and I hope he turns his life back around.
I am on the King's side for the building of the shrine because his wife was also a good woman who suffered a lot. I would be very dedicated to having that shrine built as well. What I am against, however, is the disgusting treatment of the workers by the men in charge of construction. I don't even understand why they keep whipping the workers while they are in the process of working. What sort of logic is that? You're just increasing the risk of the workers dropping heavy pieces of the shrine. You're only going to tire them out more quickly by whipping them.
The Vice Chancellor is a corrupt man who was given a high position without even taking the civil service examinations because of bribes. He is a man of bribery. However, I do agree with some things he says, so it's hard for me to completely dislike him. I am strongly against bribery and it angers me just as much as it angers Do Jeon. Isn't it kind of sad that some have to resort to bribery instead of relying on their own intellect? To me that shows a lack of belief in themselves. I'm proud of Do Jeon for refusing to bribe for a promotion. He's been in the same position for seven years and still won't resort to bribery.
I was surprised that the Vice Chancellor seems to care about Do Jeon because he tried to talk him out of turning in the appeal and said that he doesn't want to lose a talented man. He also praised Do Jeon for his spirit but warned him about getting the timing right or else his strengths are futile. The Vice Chancellor appears to also care about the country as he tells Do Jeon, “If you want to change the world, gain power first. If it could change because of you, this wouldn't be a turbulent age.”
Another interesting piece of dialogue that is worth thinking about is when someone asks how come the Vice Chancellor doesn't kick the beggars out because he's worried about them stealing. The Vice Chancellor confidently says, “They won't steal if we just leave them alone.” When asked why that is so, the Vice Chancellor explains as he tosses two pieces of dumpling to the beggars, “Someone who thinks he can get a piece of a dumpling won't try to steal the plate. People who are accustomed to begging can't rebel.”

Episode 10 is an epic one with well-made battles between Koryo and Japan. It begins with the large Japanese fleets approaching Koryo coastline and landing on Koryo territory to start the fight. Moreover, this episode also correctly depicts the images of Japanese Shogun armed forces.
This is a second historical drama I have been yearning for after "God of War" (2012) -- and it will probably make me completely satisfied.
Why people are so fascinated by Jeong Do Jeon?
photo398234.jpg

Why are Koreans suddenly crazy about Jeong Do Jeon (1342-1398), a politician who lived 600 years ago?
The historical drama of the same name that began airing in January has been enjoying significant popularity since its first episode. Riding on the drama's popularity, books about Jeong have recently been released one right after another, first with "Jeong Do Jeon and His Times", then "Jeong Do Jeon" and "Jeong Do Jeon and the Foundation Story of the Joseon Dynasty".
Jeong was pretty much the architect behind the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), helping Lee Seong Gye (1335-1408) build the new dynasty and become its first ruler, King Taejo. However, Jeong died just six years after the foundation of Joseon, killed by Lee Bang Won (1367-1422), the 5th son of King Taejo, in a political struggle.
As is usually the case, history is written by the winners - and Jeong was not one of them, which is why, until now, the public and academics weren't interested in Jeong.
The JoongAng Ilbo met with Choi Sang Yong, a leading Jeong Do Jeon expert. Choi, who studied politics in the West, wrote a book about Jeong in 2007. Choi, who is currently an emeritus professor at Korea University, served as the ambassador to Japan between 2000 and 2002, among other positions.
Choi says Jeong lived an era when people suffered from corrupt politics and an extreme income gap, adding that "he was a political thinker incomparable to his counterparts at the time".
Was Jeong Do Jeon a politician or a scholar?
No one will deny it when I say that Jeong was the best Confucian and neo-Confucian scholar of the time. He left many literary pieces that feature a free mind, yet sharp social consciousness, as well as volumes on political philosophy where his vision for a new country is evident. He also left some publications on military science. However, his life was deeply rooted in politics. That is why I often compare him to Dante Alighieri [1265-1321], who was an Italian poet with political passions, who envisioned the future of a modern country.
Would you say that Jeong is a hero created by the chaos of the final years of Goryeo?
The final years of Goryeo can certainly be described as a time of crisis. Revolutionary changes were called for. It is typical that, in times of transition, we witness the breakdown of the economy, a corruption of morals and an overturning of the balance of power, among other things. At that time, land distribution was conducted unfairly and middle-class farmers were suffering. Also, Buddhism - which was the ideological basis for Goryeo - was extremely corrupt. In such a crisis, Jeong carried out his work with his own beliefs and convictions.
For instance, he only took on several parts of the ideas of Mencius, a Chinese philosopher [372-289 BC], although most scholars at that time fully adopted the ideas. He also attempted to criticize certain ideas of Buddhism. Most notable of all is that he called for strong military power to achieve an ideal Confucian country. Although neo-Confucian is often associated with literary indulgence, to the neglect of the military arts, he was a realist who knew that politics called for strong military power.
What was Jeong's idea of a "good country"?
He dreamed of a country whose spiritual basis was neo-Confucianism, which was a "hot" political ideology at that time, and that had a prime minister and a strong, bureaucratic cabinet. Through such a political system, he attempted to solve the problems facing average people. Although he believed in democracy from early on, as seen in the drama, that belief grew stronger during the 10-year period of his exile, when he experienced first-hand the impoverished lives of average people.
Although it's true that the power of the prime minister is only limited under a monarchy, monarchy was a given at that time. He had no choice. A king can be a good king or not. But Jeong envisioned a complementary ruling system, when a good prime minister could work with the king. He had several ideas on what makes a good prime minister, but he believed the beauty of politics was in personnel and considered selecting the right people the foremost duty of a prime minister.
The design may have been good, but eventually Joseon collapsed, a corrupt and incompetent dynasty. Doesn't that mean Joseon was a failure?
I think it is a prejudice that Joseon was corrupt and incompetent, and that prejudice stems from the final years of the dynasty, which was also a time of crisis. For about a century after its foundation, Joseon was a small country in terms of its economy, but there was peace in the monarch and stability in commoners' life. That is why, even though Yi Bang-won killed Jeong Do Jeon to solidify his standing in politics, he continued to abide by Jeong's design of the Joseon Dynasty.
That is why I believe Jeong was a successful revolutionist, and I don't believe Joseon was a failed model. Even if you look at world history, it's extremely rare for a dynasty to last more than 500 years. A dynasty can only do that through a balance between monarchy, or royal authority, and theocracy, or divine right. I advise people not to judge Joseon only by its corrupt and incompetent final moments.
Why do you think Koreans today are so enthusiastic about Jeong Do Jeon?
Korea is in a transitional period at the moment. It is suffering from polarization and there is a constant struggle between the forces of habit and reform. Korean society today is similar to the final years of Goryeo also because its key task is improving the lives of average people. What we need at the moment is to have leadership with a firm philosophy, strategy and the drive to translate that into action. Listening to a message from 600 years ago couldn't hurt.

Thank you everyone for supporting my topic. >:D<
Here comes episode 10 and 11 detailed screencaps on which focus the war between Koryo and Japan. Despite the tight budget, the battle scenes in this drama are all high-quality and well-handled -- as I can see, the Japanese Shogun armed forces' battle skills and weapons are almost properly portrayed.

A little note that "samurai" is not a good thing and to be considered a "taboo" (banned) term in Korea. So, Japanese dramas/movies/animes... which contain heavy Japanese stuff, especially Samurai and some other things, will definitely never available in Korea TV (or just a bit of things in some cases). The only exception is when Korean historical dramas are willing to fully include the appearance of Samurais / Japanese warriors to follow historical records.

@kooriyuki: What about KBS World has 6 episodes? The newest broadcasting schedule had said the first two episodes was last weekends, so KBS World has only 2 ones on air, I suppose.
@O: Indeed I will.

Actor Kim Myung Soo who plays King Gongmin here also played Yasuharu Wakizaka, a Japanese general who took part in leading Japanese Naval force invading Korea during the Imjin War (the headmaster was Toyotomi Hideyoshi and their ambition was to conquer Ming China using Korea as their springboard), in "Immortal Lee Soon Shin" (2004).sNd5BUo.png
If you watch Immortal Lee Soon Shin, you might recognize this battle flag -- it has Wakizaka's crest on it.(The last info I get from a friend since I recognize that flag but not whose symbol is it.)xa8Tdql.png

"Jeong Do Jeon" and "Dragon Tears"(Tears of the Dragon 1996-1997)
“Jeong Do Jeon,” a KBS1 historical drama aired on weekends, is very popular, particularly among middle-aged or older men, the big fans of historical dramas. The seasoned actors’ excellent acting and the storyline true to history are noteworthy. The story written by a lawmaker’s aide-turned-writer has a speedy and tight plot. The drama series covers a 24-year period between 1374 when King Gongmin of the Goryeo Dynasty was about to be killed and 1398 when Jeong Do Jeon was killed.
“Dragon Tears,” which KBS aired 18 years ago, is considered one of the best historical dramas in Korea. Its viewership skyrocketed up to 49 percent in the run-up to the 1997 presidential election. It covered a period between the end of the Goryeo Dynasty and the beginning of the Joseon Dynasty. The drama excellently connected the cabinet system, a hot topic of debate before the presidential election, to the clash between Lee Bang Won, the son of the Joseon Dynasty's founding King Taejo, who wanted a monarchy ruled by a king, and Jeong Do Jeon, an aristocrat and advisor to Lee who wanted a kingdom led by ministers while the king remains to be a symbolic figure. What Jeong said on the fight over power in the drama – “Even a father and a son cannot split power” – was the talk of the town.
There is a big difference between the two historical dramas covering the same period of time. “Dragon Tears,” which starts with a scene that King Taejo was retreating from Wihwa Island after a battle against China’s Ming Dynasty army, focused on the power struggle of the top echelon of the dynasty. Meanwhile, “Jeong Do Jeon” highlights Jeong, the prime minister who dreamed of a country for the people. The end-of-the Goryeo Dynasty drama is also a satire on today’s politics, which put people’s lives on the backburner.
Jeong Do Jeon was forced to be in exile after criticizing the Goryeo Dynasty’s pro-China policy. While witnessing ordinary people’s devastated lives, he frustratingly found himself in a position that he cannot do anything for them. He founded the Joseon Dynasty by helping King Taejo, and designed the philosophy and system of the new dynasty based on politics for the people. He was killed for treason during the first fight among princes for the crown in summer 1398, and his reinstatement was eventually made 500 years after his death, under King Gojong.
“Dragon Tears” is the first Korean historical drama that was created based on historical research on Jeong Do Jeon who laid the foundation for the Joseon Dynasty. Historical documents say that he was killed after begging for life to Lee Bang Won. The drama, however, depicts a heroic death. Lee Hwan Kyung, the drama writer, said, “The person who made a great contribution to the foundation of the Joseon Dynasty and had a tumultuous life would not have died cowardly."
Many historical dramas described Jeong as a traitor or a treacherous subject but the drama “Jeong Do Jeon” shed lights on his reinstatement. President Park Geun-hye is said to have been busy reading reports after the New Year’s speech. Hopefully, she could watch “Jeong Do Jeon” on weekends and have time to talk with history. The world for the people, of which Jeong dreamed 600 years ago, is worth pursuing, even today.
President Park said during her presidential campaign, “I’ll create a foundation for the people’s happiness that can last for more than 50 years.” She initiated a discussion over the reunification of the two Koreas, by saying, “Unification is a bonanza (prosperity).” These are tasks that cannot be done by the president alone. The president needs right-minded and competent ministers who can be forthright to the president even putting their job at stake. These tasks require their active leadership and the people’s participation. It is regrettable that the discussion on granting more responsibilities to the prime minister is absent and ministers lack presence.
The Joseon Dynasty is a rare dynasty that lasted for 519 years. It was supported by the philosophy that puts the people first and the system that coordinates a king and ministers, for which Jeong Do Jeon laid the foundation. Though the background of the drama is not exactly the same as today, both times have something in common with undergoing turbulent periods. Hopefully, President Park could think about being a successful presidency while watching the historical drama depicting the agony, frustration, dreams and actions of Jeong Do Jeon who designed the Joseon Dynasty.

Jo Jae Hyun expressed his thoughts of having Yoo Dong Geun (Lee Seong Gye) as king.
On the fourteenth epsidoe of the KBS 1TV drama "Jeong Do Jeon", Yang Ji's death (Kang Ye Sol) led to Jeong Do Jeon's seclusion.
Jeong Mong Ju (Im Ho) and other rising noblemen found him at his home. However, Jeong Do Jeon told his wife to tell them he wasn't there and didn't meet them. Lady Choi (Lee Ah Hyun) worried about her husband saying, "You're behaving like this because the world doesn't go around like it should in the books."
Jeong Do Jeon was meditated in his room alone and thought, "A king who's not like a king should die and another king should be put in his place." He burned the books he'd been studying from and envisioned a dynamic revolution.
Jeong Do Jeon said, "I will kill Goryeo, this five hundred year-old monster." He found Lee Seong Gye (Yoo Dong Geun) and hinted the birth of a new king.

@O: Thank you for joining me this time too, you're always welcomed. >:D<
Episode 13, 14 screencaps added by Hancinema, peece51 hasn't updated them on his/her blog yet.
Lee Bang Won is the man holding a knife in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th picture. Judging by appearance, he's kind of brutal and political ambitious.
