The first shoot for Joo Won's new film, 'It's Him (tentative title),' was held on March 16th.
'It's Him' is going to be a shamanism thriller movie that evolves around a man who tries to catch the murderer of his younger sister by the help of a shaman.
The scene that Joo Won (playing as Jang Woo) and Yoo Hae Jin (playing as pharmacist Min) filmed during the first shoot is going to show their first encounter with each other.
Even though it was the first time for them to work with each other, the two showed a fabulous teamwork together.
Joo Won, who recently made a successful debut as a musical actor, had to learn dialect and gain more weight to play as Jang Woo, the older brother who tries to catch his younger sister's murderer. Joo Won said, "Thriller is one of my most favorite genres, and I am very looking forward to future shoots. It took me a long time to learn Gyeongsang Province dialect, and I hope that many people would enjoy my performance on the film."
Yoo Hae Jin, who recently appeared on many different entertainment programs is playing as pharmacist Min, who Jang Woo finds a bit suspicious. Yoo Hae Jin said, "It was a great first shoot. We had a quite impressive teamwork even though it was our first time to work together, and I am very looking forward to future shoots."
Meanwhile, Yoo Hae Jin and Joo Won are going to finish filming 'It's Him' around late May, and the film will be officially released during the later half of the year.

A-listers flock back to big screen in June

By Baek Byung-yeul The Korea Times

As Hollywood blockbusters "Avengers 2," "Kingsman" and "Mad Max" dominated the box office this year, Korean film lovers have had little chance to watch local films except for "Ode to My Father" which pulled in more than 14 million viewers, "Detective K 2" and "Twenty," which surpassed 3 million.

With two big-budget films, "Jurassic World" and "San Andreas," out this month, domestic films featuring A-list stars will be screened to end the box office drought.

"Perfect Proposal" is the first to open fire.

Adapted from French novelist Catherine Arley's 1954 novel "La Femme de Paille," actress Lim Soo-jung features as Ji-yeon, a young bartender working in Macau to pay off debts after a friend's betrayal.

16-02(429).jpg

It all starts when the struggling woman receives an offer from Sung-yeol (Yoo Yeon-seok), an assistant to an old and ill casino mogul, Kim Seok-gu (Lee Geung-young), to seduce his boss and split the inheritance.

Directed by Yoon Jae-gu, known for the 2009 thriller "Secret," the film shows how a timid and sorrowful woman, who stands on the verge of crisis, carries out the life-changing offer. "Perfect Proposal" began screening nationwide on June 4.

On June 18, a strong candidate expected to shake up the box office race this month will hit screens ― star director Kwak Kyung-taek's "The Classified File."

Based on a 33-day kidnapping case in Busan in 1978, actor Kim Yoon-seok, best known for smash hits "The Thieves" (2012) and "Tazza: The High Rollers" (2006), features as veteran detective Gong Gil-yong.

Gong is on a quest to find a missing child, Eun-ju, but the more the investigation continues, the more it reveals there are no clues.

As the saying goes, a drowning man would clutch at a straw, so Gong visits renowned fortune-teller Kim Joong-san (Yoo Hae-jin). He is told that Eun-ju is still alive and that the kidnapper will attempt to contact her parents on the 15th day of the kidnapping.

When it happens, Gong starts to believe in what Kim says and shares the case with him to save the girl.

Another film based on a true story will also screen this month.

"Northern Limit Line," which will hit the big screen on June 24, tells the story of a deadly naval skirmish between North and South Korea that killed six South Korean soldiers while the South was in the grip of World Cup fever on June 29, 2002.

On the day of the playoff for third-place between South Korea and Turkey, the two Koreas exchanged fire near Yeonpyeong Island, close to the Northern Limit Line (NLL), a maritime demarcation off the west coast of the Korean Peninsula.

The 130-minute film spends almost 100 minutes telling the life stories of the deceased soldiers, who were fathers, husbands, sons and brothers.

Yoo Hae-jin impersonates the news anchor's voice during interview on Sohn Suk-hee's 'News Room'

Source: OSEN via Hancinema.net

photo602109.jpg

Actor Yoo Hae-jin appeared in the 'Guest Seat' of JTBC's 'News Room' and had a talk with Sohn Suk-hee.

On this day, Yoo Hae-jin said, "I can't help feeling nervous. I usually don't get nervous. But I cannot calm down myself here" and "Putting aside the fact this is a news program, it's also because I am thinking you'd say 'It seems you did not understand my question', if I don't respond properly". As he impersonated the news anchor's voice with the new anchor's famous repeated phrase, both of them laughed.

Yoo Hae-jin again said, "I'll focus hard".

Meanwhile, Yoo Hae-jin's new movie, "The Classified File" is based on an actual case of kidnapping an elementary school student, which happened in Busan in 1978. It depicts the stories of the real-life detective Gong Gil-yong (Kim Yoon-seok) and the Taoist, Kim Joong-san (Yoo Hae-jin), who actually found the missing child using the child's fate based on the Four Pillars and the Eight Characters.

True crime story unravels in ‘Classified File’
Kidnapping in 1978 is basis for thriller by Kwak Kyung-taek

BY JIN EUN-SOO [jin.eunsoo@joongang.co.kr] INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily

12073748.jpg

Director Kwak Kyung-taek’s latest movie “The Classified File” unveils the story of two hidden figures from history - fortune teller Kim Joong-san (Yoo Hae-jin), left, and detective Go Gil-yong (Kim Yun-seok) - who played a major role in solving a kidnapping case that happened in 1978 in Busan. Provided by the distributor

When a movie is described as a crime thriller based on a true story, it leaves the audience with a number of preconceived notions.

First, it should make the heart pound. Second, it should come with a major twist at the end.

And third, watching incompetent, high-ranking officials fail to catch the real criminal should make the audience resent society.

But none of the aforementioned characteristics apply to upcoming movie “The Classified File,” directed by Kwak Kyung-taek of Korean box office hits “Friend” (2001) and “Mutt Boy” (2003).

Instead, an unlikely pair - detective Gong Gil-yong and fortune-telling Kim Joong-san - bring a sense of humanism and cordiality to the story while they attempt to solve a real-life kidnapping case in Busan that happened in 1978.

At the time, all eyes were on arresting the abductor and trying to make the search proceedings as open as possible. However, Kim and Gong believed the case should be strictly confidential in order to ensure the safety of the missing child.

Precedents from past cases suggested that an open investigation often leads to the death of the child in question.

Thanks to this strategy, the missing girl was found alive 33 days after she went missing, but the closed-door investigation meant the names of the true heroes were left out of the news report.

Their story was then forgotten for the next 37 years.

Director Kwak, who uncovered the tale while researching for a previous film, “Friend : The Great Legacy” (2013), said he instantly wanted to turn it into a movie.

“The kidnapping case itself wasn’t what I was trying to depict through the movie,” said Kwak during a press screening event on Monday at Wangsimni CGV, eastern Seoul.

“I wanted to tell the veiled story of these two people who sweated and ran harder than anybody 30 years ago to save the child, standing up for their beliefs.”

However, crafting a movie in which everyone already knows the ending was challenging even for veteran director Kim.

“The movie had a good message, but people said it couldn’t be a commercial movie,” Kim said.

“People pointed out that an investigative movie should have suspense and thrills but that mine didn’t have those,” he added.

Differing from the usual format, the film is charged with emotional scenes showing the desperation of the girl’s parents as well as Gong and Kim’s continuous efforts to bring the child back alive when their colleagues only seemed to care about arresting the culprit and taking the credit.

Actor Kim Yun-seok takes on the role of detective Gong.

While he has acted as a detective before in “Running Turtle” (2009) and “The Chaser” (2008), the 47-year-old made sure that he was offering something different this time.

“If the script was another typical type of hard-boiled crime thriller, I would have not taken it. But my character, Gong, was a father, a colleague and a middle-aged man who lived during that era, before he was a detective,” he said.

His fortune-telling partner is taken on by maverick actor Yoo Hae-jin, who dropped his usual frivolous personality and put on a weighty, father-figure persona.

The film opens nationwide on Thursday.

'Classified File' spotlights value of integrity

The year is 1978. A little girl has been kidnapped for ransom in Busan, but the perpetrator does not contact the family for two weeks. Nearly everyone assumes that the girl is dead and is focused only on making an arrest, while the parents are praying that there is still some way to bring their daughter back safe.

The girl’s mother meets a fortune-teller named Kim Joong-san, who tells her not only that her daughter is alive, but that she can be saved if she enlists the help of detective Gong Gil-yong. The fortune-teller and detective enter an unlikely partnership to conduct a secret investigation and bring the girl home, fighting against those who put personal gain above saving the child’s life.

The true story of these two men, who are still alive today, is brought to the big screen by director Kwak Kyung-taek (2001’s “Friend,” 2005’s “Typhoon”) in the upcoming “The Classified File.” Kim Yun-seok plays the true-hearted detective and Yoo Hae-jin the fortune-teller. Kwak first came across the story when he interviewed the real-life Gong Gil-yong for his movie “Friend 2” (2013).

“When I first interviewed (Gong) and (Kim), I could see them tearing up, and that’s when I knew I wanted to make this movie,” Kwak said at a press preview at CGV Wangsimni on June 8. “I wasn’t trying to tell the story of a kidnapping. I wanted to talk about two men who did all they could do to save a little girl 30 years ago, who have kept their amazing achievements to themselves all these years.”

Since the film is based on a true story, there is no suspense about how the plot will end. That is why the focus of “The Classified File” is not on solving the mystery but on the forgotten role and the interpersonal struggles of Gong and Kim during the investigation. The case has gone down in history as a victory for the police as a whole, without due credit given to the two men, Kwak said.

The film is very specific about showing police office politics as being major obstacles to Gong and Kim, but refrains from demonizing the other officers. Instead, it shows how the two men make compromises to keep their integrity while maintaining relationships with others.

That human center was what drew in Kim Yun-seok and Yoo Hae-jin, respected and familiar faces in Korean cinema.

“If this was a hard-boiled action film, I probably would have turned it down,” Kim said. “I’ve shown that side of me in previous movies. I chose this film because the focus was on Gong Gil-yong as a father, a colleague and a middle-aged man living in Korea in those tumultuous times.”

“The Classified File” takes significant breaks away from the investigation itself to depict Gong and Kim with their respective wives and children. The framing of the two men as fathers and husbands helps to lend more sincerity to their efforts to save the kidnapped girl, Eun-joo, and give the film a more human-centric angle.

“We all feel downtrodden and lonely when someone else takes credit for our work, or we are not properly acknowledged for our efforts,” said Kwak. “But those situations are so common around us. I wanted to send the message that if you choose to do the right thing, good virtue will come back to you, even if it has to circle the Earth to do so.”

“The Classified File” opens in local theaters June 18.

Yoo Hae Jin Has Unlikely Friendship With BIGBANG’s T.O.P and Meets Regularly

Yoo Hae Jin revealed his unlikely friendship with BIGBANG’s T.O.P.

During an interview with News 1 Sports on June 15, Yoo Hae Jin said, “I heard some of the younger actors are afraid of me. I have no idea why.”

“I hope they will be able to approach me with ease. Some of the youngsters have such difficulty with my presence and immediately discard their cigarettes when I pass by. At times, it even makes me embarrassed,” he added. “Sometimes I try to avoid them because I know how uncomfortable they are with me.”

1403271_article_99_20150616181204.jpg?ty

“Still, I have some youngsters who are close with me. I’m really close with T.O.P after we starred in ‘Tazza: The Hidden Card’ together. I think we see each other at least once a month,” he explains. “We also text each other a lot.”

Yoo Hae Jin also explained his simplistic acting in “The Classified File.”

“If my acting gets flamboyant, this movie would have been all over the place. If Detective Gong (Kim Yoon Suk) is active and energetic, it’s only right for Kim Joong San to be a little quieter to keep the film balanced,” he said. “The movie will lose its genuineness if I try to add on to the spectacle with other vibrant actors.”

He emphasized looking at the big picture, saying, “I can’t be selfish. This isn’t a film only for me. I have to keep the entire movie in mind. That is why the amount of my footage isn’t important.”

Meanwhile, “The Classified File” is a mystery suspense movie that recreates the case of a kidnapped child in 1978. It will be opening in theaters on June 18.

Yoo Hae-jin continues to work hard
Actor and entertainer has had a fruitful career in movie, TV industry

BY KIM YEON-JI [lee.sunmin@joongang.co.kr] INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily

19081720.jpg

Actor Yoo Hae-jin doesn’t take breaks. Each year he has made at least one new movie in between taking part in TV entertainment shows.

And many of the films he has chosen, including “The Pirates,” have gone down very well with local audiences.

With this level of success, Yoo has made a name for himself in the movie industry.

However, many now think of him as a down-to-earth entertainer as well as an actor, especially after he took part in the KBS entertainment show “One Night, Two Days” in 2013 and went on cable channel tvN’s reality series “Three Meals a Day” last year, where he had to survive rural life by making home appliances with wire and wood and foraging for ingredients to cook with.

The actor sat down with Ilgan Sports, an affiliate of Korea JoongAng Daily, to share what his career means to him.

Q. What are the things you think about when it comes to acting?

A. I often think a lot about what to do and how to act, especially when I’m filming something. I recently watched the movie “Whiplash” and spent some time looking back on my own life. The life of the male lead character seems like the one I had in my 20s. I was really passionate back then, practicing all night and studying acting. I pondered whether I’m maybe too settled compared to how I was back in my 20s. There are a lot of younger actors around, and I often try to watch them acting. There is a lot I can learn from them, so it’s really helpful.

Do you believe viewers think you have a friendly manner?

I’m just thankful that people say [nice things] about me. But I keep on questioning whether I deserve them. I think a lot about living a good life. I try to reflect on that a lot because it’s not living a good life if I’m the only one.

You haven’t done a TV drama since 2005. Do you have any plans to do one in future?

I would do it if I found a good piece. But one thing I’m worried about is now I’m too used to the movie production system, so I fear that I wouldn’t do well making a drama.

What do you do in your free time?

I’ve liked looking at artwork since I was young. I wouldn’t get on a plane just to see a certain piece of art overseas, but I always enjoy going to modern art museums whenever I go abroad. When I see art, I don’t read the information given in the pamphlets. I just like being amazed by the feelings and ideas I get from just looking at it. In the same sense, I’m very cautious about telling the audience what to look for in the movie that I’m in.

You also like hiking. How often do you go?

I go every day. Depending on my schedule, sometimes I go in the morning and sometimes I go in the afternoon. When I have more time I spend two hours on a round-trip, and sometimes I do shorter routes. Sometime I go to forget about things, and other times I go to organize my thoughts.

Of course, it’s a good workout. Now it’s my everyday habit; it feels weird to not go. The funny thing is that every time I go it’s so hard. It’s like acting. You can’t rely on gimmicks when you act, and it’s difficult every time I do it.

How do you want people to remember you?

I hope the title “actor” doesn’t seem too awkward when people think of me. That would be more than enough. I want to be good enough so that I don’t have to feel sorry about continuing to act for a living.

On the episode of “Three Meals a Day” aired on June 19, BoA warmly greets Yoo Hae Jin. The two seem more like brother and sister because of their closeness with each other.

During the interview, BoA reveals, “We have a social group. A bunch of shy people gathered together to make a group in which you don’t have to be shy.”

Local crime film draws record crowd on opening day

SEOUL, June 19 (Yonhap) -- A new domestic crime movie has drawn more than 180,000 viewers on its opening day, data showed Friday, the highest opening-day record for all Korean films released this year.

"The Classified File" topped the daily box-office upon its release on Thursday with 181,749 viewers, beating Hollywood blockbuster "Jurassic World," according to the Korean Film Council.

Directed by Kwak Kyung-taek, best known for "Friend" (2001), the movie starring Kim Yun-seok and Yoo Hae-jin is based on a real-life story in 1978 Busan, in which a fortune-teller and a police detective form an unlikely partnership to conduct a secret investigation and bring a kidnapped girl back home.

Korean films have performed poorly in a market dominated by Hollywood blockbusters such as "Avengers: Age of Ultron" and "Jurassic World" so far this year.

The previous opening-day record for a Korean film this year was 150,000 shared by "Gangnam Blues" and "Twenty."

Meanwhile, "The Silenced," a local mystery-drama film that opened on the same day as "The Classified File" sold 53,657 tickets on the first day of its run.
