"The Battle: Roar to Victory" Leads for Third Straight Day

By William Schwartz on HanCinema.net

photo1091744.jpg

On Tuesday "The Battle: Roar to Victory" slightly decreased its sales receipts by taking in 203,404 admissions. It still leads "Exit - Movie", which had a slight decrease to 197,088 admissions.

For cumulative admissions this marks "Exit - Movie" hitting the six million admission landmark, having been available in theaters for fourteen days. Interestingly, the pace for milestones has not significantly slowed recently. "Exit - Movie" had five million admissions after eleven days and four million admissions after eight days. However, the rate will almost certainly decrease further with the release of the latest 'Fast and the Furious' movie.

"The Battle: Roar to Victory" is facing a more modest milestone, as the war movie is set to soon break the 2.5 million admission mark. "Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarfs' is looking to hit 700,000 admissions, while "Bring the Soul: The Movie" is going for 300,000 admissions.

'The Battle: Roar to Victory' passes 3 million admissions

SEOUL, Aug. 15 (Yonhap) -- Historical blockbuster "The Battle: Roar to Victory," directed by Won Shin-yeon, surpassed 3 million admissions on the ninth day of its theatrical run on Thursday, the film's distributor said.

The film had brought a cumulative total of 3 million viewers to theaters as of 2:35 p.m., according to the film's distributor Showbox.

Starring Yu Hae-jin and Ryoo Joon-yeol, the film revolves around a fierce battle between Korean independence militias and Japanese forces that took place at Fengwudong in Manchuria, China, in 1920.

The two-day battle was the first victory by a Korean independence unit against Japanese regulars.

South Korea celebrated Liberation Day on Thursday, commemorating the 1945 end of Japan's colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.

7. Korean Hostel In Spain

korean-hostel-in-spain.jpg

“Korean Hostel In Spain” is a spin-off of “Three Meals a Day,” but it’s definitely still worth the watch if you like the idea of seeing Cha Seung Won, Bae Jeong Nam, and Yoo Hae Jin setting up a hostel in Spain.

It seems like a random concept, but it’s an intriguing one. The three stars set up a hostel along the path of the famous Santiago pilgrimage in Spain. They provide beds, showers, and delicious home-cooked meals for their guests. You meet some intriguing travelers who are going on this 800-kilometer journey, and you’ll almost feel a bit jealous of their carefree nature. You’ll also find your mouth watering from all the delicious meals that Cha Seung Won cooks up! Check out this clip of him cooking a simple breakfast:

HanCinema's Film Review: "The Battle: Roar to Victory"

By William Schwartz on HanCinema.net

photo1092737.jpg

Promotional information for "The Battle: Roar to Victory" has been somewhat misleading. The movie does indeed contain the Battle of Fengwudong. There's even a subtitle that helpfully pops up to tell us that this particular random mountainous area the characters have just wandered is the one the movie's named after. But up until that point, the characters just wander into a wide variety of other generally random mountainous places getting into shootouts as necessary, nothing being that well organized. Because that is, in fact, the central defining element of guerrilla warfare.

"The Battle: Roar to Victory" is from a film perspective really weird to watch because it's basically an American Vietnam War movie in reverse. American Vietnam War movies, while generally acknowledging that war is bad, are deliberately vague as to the causes of the war and expect us to see uniformed American soldiers as inherently sympathetic boys from back home caught up in a situation they don't understand. And of course Vietcong soldiers are at best bloodthirsty jungle ninjas..

"The Battle: Roar to Victory" turns all those ideas upside down. Here, the uniformed Japanese soldiers are clearly, unambiguously the bad guys. They kill and rape for the fun of it. Anyone with the temerity to suggest that maybe killing and raping for fun is wrong is treated by commanding officers as if they just endorsed the concept of treason. It's disturbing, and maybe even a little cartoonish at times, but unfortunately far more accurate to real life than the troop fetishism common in American movies.

The Koreans, meanwhile, aren't even really soldiers. They don't have uniforms. Their main advantage is that they very vaguely know the layout of the countryside. Their leader Hwa-cheol is surprisingly well cast by the generally goofy Yoo Hae-jin. The fact that he, of all people, runs this ragtag band, emphasizes how the entire guerrilla rebellion against Japan is a very ad hoc operation and that their members consist entirely either of people who just had their homes destroyed or who have good reason to believe their homes are about to be destroyed.

The way they talk is also interesting- nobody ever says anything about Korea. It's always about their hometowns. It's never about the Japanese. It's about the invaders. "The Battle: Roar to Victory" does not deal with patriotism in the abstract but rather more immediate reasons why a person would give up their lives to face certain death at the hands of well-equipped career soldiers. Once you've robbed a man of everything, he's no longer in your power.

The main advantage "The Battle: Roar to Victory" has going for it is the surprisingly authentic take on the inherently tedious, meandering nature of guerrilla warfare. That also proves to be the movie's main flaw, since "The Battle: Roar to Victory" is itself very tedious and meandering. The movie needed better editing, as is well seen during the outrageous climax that somehow keeps failing to end. The battle scenes themselves are shot well enough- it just gets to be a bit repetitive after awhile.

No mega-hits at S. Korean summer box office for first time in 6 yrs

By Kim Boram

SEOUL, Aug. 29 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's box office is expected to receive the worst score for the summer peak season in six years, as no film will probably post more than 10 million admissions.

Since 2014, at least one flick has reached the 10 million milestone in ticket sales in South Korea every summer, considered a huge box-office success in a country with a population of about 52 million.

The Korean historical movie "Roaring Currents," released July 30, 2014, started the five-year streak with a record 17.6 million admissions, followed by the action comedy "Veteran" and espionage action film "Assassination" next year.

"Train to Busan," a zombie action thriller, joined the 10 million club in 2016, while the historical drama "A Taxi Driver" also achieved the feat in 2017.

Last year, the fantasy adventure "Along With the Gods: The Last 49 Days" also sold more than 10 million tickets in the summer.

In 2019, however, no summer blockbusters, released between end-July and early-August to target summer vacationers, have surpassed the threshold.

The action comedy "Exit," which premiered July 31, had attracted 8.57 million people as of Wednesday but is predicted to fail to reach 10 million admissions due to its slowed daily ticket sale pace. The movie, starring Jo Jung-suk and Im Yoon-ah, is about an unemployed guy's adventure to escape from a disaster-hit Seoul. It topped the summer box office thanks to its well-rounded story and balanced humor.

Released Aug. 7, "The Battle: Roar to Victory," a historical action movie about an independent battle against the Japanese military, placed runner-up with 4.6 million admissions to meet the break-even point.

But two other summer tent poles -- the historical drama "The King's Letters" and the horror film "The Divine Fury" -- failed to win the hearts of local film buffs and logged fewer than 1 million and 1.6 million admissions, respectively.

As a result, total admissions in August have dropped sharply from a year ago.

According to data compiled by the Korean Film Council, a total of 23.3 million people have gone to theaters during the first 28 days of August, down from 30.3 million tallied in all of August in 2018.

Moreover, the sluggish summer box-office results compare with remarkable successes in the first half, when South Korean moviegoers flocked to see four mega-hit films -- the comedy film "Extreme Job," Marvel's "Avengers: Endgame," Walt Disney's live-action film "Aladdin" and the Cannes-winning Korean satire "Parasite."

"There were no clearly outstanding movies that attracted more and more people to the cinema, unlike in the spring season," said Hwang Jae-hyeon from CJ CGV, the largest multiplex theater chain in Korea. "And people think it is hard to pick one among four mediocre summer-targeting movies."

August ticket sales for S. Korean movies hit 7-year low

SEOUL, Sept. 14 (Yonhap) -- Monthly sales figures for homegrown films tumbled to their lowest point in seven years last month on a dearth of hit titles, a report showed Saturday.

Sales of tickets for South Korean movies came to 18 million in August, 4.21 million less than the monthly sales recorded in August last year, according to the Korean Film Council.

It is the first August figure to fall below the 20-million level since 2012.

The unusual downturn is attributable to Korean films' tepid performance this summer.

Such famous movies as 2014's "Roaring Currents" and "A Taxi Driver" and "Along With the Gods: The Last 49 Days" from 2018 dominated the summer box office in the past, all drawing more than 10 million moviegoers each.

The movie scene this summer was an exception, with the best-performing film, "Exit," managing to sell just 8.28 million tickets in August following its July 31 release.

The second-best-selling title was "Battle of Fengwudong," which sold less than 5 million.

"As several similarly themed high-budget films hit the screens in the busy summer season, moviegoers might have grown tired (of them)," an official at the Korean Film Council said.

"After four films that sold more than 10 million tickets in the first half of this year, demand has also come down in the second half," the official noted.

Monthly sales of tickets for non-Korean movies, meanwhile, came to 6.81 million last month, down 1.24 million from a year earlier and the lowest for August since 2012.

This puts the total ticket sales at 24.81 million in August, down 18 percent on-year and the lowest figure for any August since 2013, according to the report.
