The “56th Baeksang Arts Awards” Judges Share How They Came To Select These 5 Winners

On June 5, 2020, the prestigious 56th Baeksang Arts Awards held its no-audience ceremony — celebrating another successful year of Korean movies and dramas. The greatest hits from April 2019 to April 2020 took home the well-deserved trophies. In case you’re curious though, here are the details on how the Baeksang Arts Awards judges selected some of the winners.

1. Daesang (Grand Prize)

While the daesang candidates have not been revealed prior to the ceremony, the judges discussed the possibilities among When The Camellia BloomsMister Trot, and actress Kim Hee Ae from The World of The Married. When the actual voting process began, however, the judges in general showed a strong inclination toward When The Camellia Blooms. They commented, “Television nowadays must provide the viewers with both entertainment and social insight. When The Camellia Blooms did exactly that.” According to the judges, When The Camellia Blooms taught the viewers that the average citizens can come together and make big changes — which is certainly the most appropriate message that the society needs at the moment. The judges thought highly of the fact that When The Camellia Blooms emphasized “We’re all protagonists in our own ways” and thus, inspired them to throne it the Baeksang grand prize.

2. Best Actor

The judges shared that the votes remained split between actor Kang Ha Neul of When The Camellia Blooms and acter Namkoong Min of Hot Stove League until the final round. Ultimately, Kang Ha Neul had the honor of winning Best Actor — for his most believable portrayal of the character Hwang Yong Shik. The judges believed Kang Ha Neul boasted an excellent spectrum of emotions on the show, which is rare from the relatively young group of actors in their 30s.

3. Best Supporting Actor

Actor Oh Jung Se of both When The Camellia Blooms and Stove League won Best Supporting Actor with an unanimous vote from the judges. They commented, “Oh Jung Se successfully played two entirely different characters in his hit dramas — all the while making the viewers believe they are completely separate people. His ability to do this is simply irreplaceable.

4. Best Actress
The competition for the Best Actress award had been the fiercest yet. According to the judges, The World of The Married‘s Kim Hee Ae went head to head against When The Camellia Blooms‘s Gong Hyo Jin and Hyena‘s Kim Hye Soo. Eventually the judges came to agree that Kim Hee Ae’s deep understanding of — and the multi-dimensional portrayal of — the shattered-and-miserable Dr. Ji Sun Woo deserved to be awarded

5. Best New Actress

Actress Kim Da Mi happily took home this once-in-a-lifetime award — for her funky-fresh character in the webtoon-based K-Drama Itaewon Class. Judges commented that she and Hospital Playlist actress Jeon Mi Do had the judges bouncing back and forth until the very last minute. They revealed, “It was a really close call. Jeon Mi Do actually lost by a single vote.” In the end, Kim Da Mi’s rising and trendsetting presence in the K-Drama world deemed her more worthy of the super rookie title.

Better late than never! The 56th annual Baeksang Arts Awards took place on June 5, following a month-long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Keeping in mind that the pandemic is far from over, the ceremony took place under social distancing measures, with attendees seated in chairs spaced apart from each other.

The Baeksang Awards are notable for their big tent approach to nominations, which means that shows and actors are recognized regardless of which broadcaster a drama aired on. Marking their third year as an emcee trio, Shin Dong-yup, Suzy, and Park Bo-gum hosted once again (though this is now Suzy’s fifth consecutive year hosting).

8 Heartwarming K-Dramas That Are Worth Your Time (And Tears)

If you're looking for the next drama you should watch, check these out!

While we all love our fix of kilig K-dramas, we also enjoy watching stories that aren’t all about romantic relationships. We asked the girls over at our Facebook Community, Cosmo Mixers, about their favorite heartwarming K-dramas and we listed down the best ones below. Definitely consider these the next time you’re looking for a really good drama to watch—we can totally vouch for them!

When The Camellia Blooms

Watch It On: Netflix

“I'm currently watching When The Camellia Blooms and I can't believe I slept on this gem when it aired last year. I don't usually go for heartwarming dramas 'cause I'd rather not want to deal with ~the feels~ during my downtime, but I gave in to curiosity with this one. And I’m sooo glad I did! Its whip-smart dialogue and incredibly talented cast of characters really warmed my heart, hihi. Of course Kang Ha Neul just makes me fall in love with him more with each episode, but the quiet strength that Gong Hyo Jin exudes is just so inspiring to me! She's flawed, yes, but that doesn't stop her from losing sight of who she really is.” —Cindy

"The Pirates 2" anticipated to take over box office with hot names such as Kang Ha Neul, Sehun (EXO)...

AC654E6E-CE4C-4EA2-AE83-B1DD35E1176D.jpg

The film "The Pirates" will return with part 2 titled "The Pirates: The Goblin's Flag" (rough translation, directed by Kim Jung Hoon) with the participation of a young cast and a new storyline that brings more upgraded adventures and attractions.

"The Pirates: The Goblin's Flag" is a comic action-adventure film about thrilling and exciting stories of those who gather at sea to take over the last treasure of the Goryeo royal family, who disappeared without a trace after the establishment of Joseon. Previously, the first part of "The Pirates" attracted attention when taking viewers on a "unique" Korean historical action-adventure which perfectly combines all 3 elements including a plot with many original ideas, charming characters, and spectacular battles taking place on the sea. The second part "The Pirates: The Goblin's Flag" is expected to continue that success with a new, young, and even more passionate cast.

After proving his solid acting ability through drama, comedy, and thriller genres such as "Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet", "Midnight Runners", "Forgotten", Kang Ha Neul continued to solidify his status as a well-merited popular actor through the drama "When the Camellia Blooms", which has recently been broadcast. In this work, the actor will display his cheerful and energetic side by taking the role of leader Umuchi of a righteous outlaw gang of thieves, who claims to be Goryeo's best swordsman but accidentally lives on a pirate ship.

Actress Han Hyo Joo, who advanced to Hollywood through the American TV series "Treadstone" after getting good reviews on her acting in movies like "Masquerade", "Cold Eyes", "The Beauty Inside", etc., will play Hae Rang who is the leader of the pirates with an infamous reputation. Han Hyo Joo will transform into this character and directly take charge of action scenes with a high level of difficulty, thereby displaying a never-seen-before image.

Actor Lee Kwang Soo, who showed his friendly charm and a wide spectrum of acting through films such as "The Accidental Detective" and "Inseparable Bros", will bring laughter and fun to viewers with his sly and mischievous acting as Mak Yi, a pirate crew member whose special skill is personal play. Besides, "The Pirates: The Goblin's Flag" is expected to raise the tension when the role of Boo Heung Soo, who confronts the pirate crew while hovering around the hidden treasure, is portrayed by Kwon Sang Woo, who has led the box office success with his impressive vibrant performances regardless of genre through the movies "Hitman: Agent Jun", "The Divine Move 2: The Wrathful", etc.

Actress Chae Soo Bin, who is noticed with a youthful charm through the dramas "Moonlight Drawn by Clouds", "Where Stars Land", etc. will transform into a brave female newcomer of the pirate crew for the treasure hunt. Member Sehun of the top K-pop group EXO will make his official big-screen debut in the role of Han Goong - the archer of the pirates that is proud of his "one shot, one kill" skills.

Additionally, the role of Kang Seop - the right-hand man of Umichi and also the sub-chief of the righteous outlaw gang of thieves - will be played by actor Kim Sung Oh, who perfectly portrayed many characters with diverse personalities, including both strong and funny characteristics in several dramas and movies. Meanwhile, the role of Ah Gwi - an assistant pirate following Hae Rang - is taken by actor Park Ji Hwan, who left a strong impression through the movies "The Outlaws" and "1987".

"The Pirates: The Goblin's Flag" was penned by capable scriptwriter Cheon Sung Il, who was behind the success of the drama "Chuno" and the movie "7th Grade Civil Servant", "The Pirates". This movie is more expected for being directed by PD Kim Jeong Hoon, who has proven his ability to conquer the box office and his humorous yet delicate way of directing through "Petty Romance" and "The Accidental Detective".

"The Pirates: The Goblin's Flag" is set to start the filming in July.

Filming first began for the movie on March 23 and has been completed in approximately three months, with the final day being July 4.

The film is set to tell the special and warm story of different youths, and will premiere in cinemas in 2021. Kang Ha Neul is set to take on his first movie role in approximately three years as Young Ho, who is in his third year of retaking exams and doesn’t have any big goals, until an unexpected letter exchange brings about change and growth. Sharing letters with him is So Hee, played by Chun Woo Hee, whose feelings grow with the stack of letters as they collect. Kang Sora will be making a special appearance in the film as Soo Jin, a fellow student at Young Ho’s cram school.

Kang Ha Neul said, “I decided to appear in the film because I think it will be a serene story that will stay with people for a long time, and that belief strengthened as filming went on. I think I will hold the emotions I felt working on this film for a long time.” Chun Woo Hee stated, “I think this will be a film that brings all of our emotions alive. I’ve been so grateful and had so much fun. Please anticipate it.” Kang Sora added, “It’s a lovely and emotional story. It felt like I was living in memories from 17 years ago, and it was a little sad coming back to reality. I’m grateful to all those who gifted me with such great memories.”

“Story of You and the Rain” is set to premiere in theaters in 2021.
