Five Korean movies to look forward to in 2021

With plenty of films that were slated to hit the screen in 2020 being forced to delay their release dates and also brand new films, there's a lot to look forward to in 2021. From historical action to thriller and romance movies, this year looks to be promising for the big screen.

Hero
A poster for the film
Director Yoon Je-kyoon's "Hero," a film version of the hit musical about Korean independence activist Ahn Jung-geun, will be unveiled in 2021. Yoon, who is talented in producing drama movies that represent Korean history as in "Ode to My Father" (2014), will tell a biopic of Ahn, who assassinated Ito Hirobumi, Japan's prime minister and the first resident governor general of Korea, in 1909. In March the following year, Ahn was executed in a Japanese prison in China. The cast includes musical star Jung Sung-hwa and Kim Go-eun.

Kim Go-eun cast in popular webcomic-based romance drama

Actress Kim Go-eun has been cast in the upcoming drama series "Yumi's Cells," an adaptation of a popular webcomic of the same title.

Set to begin filming sometime in the first half of 2021, "Yumi's Cells" is a story of a 30-something office worker named Kim Yumi and her anthropomorphized blue-hooded brain cells that control her mood, thoughts and actions.

The Naver webcomic by Lee Dong-gun recorded over 3.2 billion accumulated views and wrapped up with 512 episodes last November. The series will combine live-action and animated elements so that the brain cells resemble Lee's depiction of them in the original webcomic.

The script will be created by three writers ― Song Jae-jung of tvN drama series "Memories of the Alhambra" (2018), Kim Yoon-ju of MBC drama series "Find Me in Your Memory" (2020) and rookie writer Kim Kyung-ran. Lee Sang-yeop of tvN series "Familiar Wife" (2018) will produce the upcoming series.

Kim expressed excitement about the project, saying "I'm looking forward to playing Yumi's character to whom many readers were able to relate their feelings for many years."

This is not the first time that Kim has starred in a webcomic-based drama. In 2016, she played Hong Seol's character in tvN drama "Cheese in the Trap," which is based on a popular webcomic of the same title.

Her other notable roles include tvN drama series "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God" (2016) and SBS drama series "The King: Eternal Monarch" (2020).

“I think many people were able to enjoy happy and sad moments while reading about an ordinary woman character Yumi’s love life for such a long time because it is relatable. I am looking forward to starting on this journey,” Kim said in a statement.

Popular Korean webtoon series “Yumi’s Cells” has 512 episodes and is written and drawn by Lee Dong-geun. The final episode was presented on the portal giant Naver’s webtoon platform on Nov. 7.
