The latest Korean martial arts film starring Lee Byung-hun and 2PM’s Junho may pull forward its scheduled release date to August.

The movie, “Memories of the Sword,” was originally slated for release in the latter half of this year, but industry insiders on Tuesday said the film may be released at an earlier date in summer’s peak theatrical month of August.

Distributor Lotte Entertainment has not confirmed a release date and is said to be watching the Korean cultural market trends, following the MERS outbreak in late May.

The main cast includes acclaimed actors Lee Byung-hun, Jeon Do-yeon and Kim Go-eun as skilled swordsmen. The film is set in the Goryeo dynasty and deals with themes of rivalry, revenge and greed.

2PM singer Junho, actors Lee Gyeong-young and Bae Soo-bin also play supporting roles.

Lee Byung-hun’s 'Memories of the Sword' set for August release

Actor Lee Byung-hun’s new movie “Memories of the Sword” has been confirmed for an August release after months of delays.

The movie, which was originally set for release last year, was delayed due to Lee being involved in a high-profile court case regarding the attempt of two minor celebrities to blackmail him.

The movie is a story of ambition and betrayal among swordsmen set at the tail end of the kingdom of Goryeo, which occupied most of the Korea Peninsula between 918 and 1392.

Lee plays “Yoo-baek,” a swordsman who betrays his friends with whom he led an uprising.

Actress Jeon Do-yeon plays the part of “Wol-so,” who plots revenge against “Yoo-baek,” whose betrayal led to the death of the father of her child.

According to Lee’s agency BH Entertainment, the actor will return to Korea in late July to promote “Memories of the Sword.”

Lee is currently in the U.S., working on a remake of 1960’s “The Magnificent Seven.”

The first teaser of long-awaited martial arts film “Memories of the Sword” starring Lee Byung-hun, Jeon Do-yeon and Kim Go-eun has been unveiled, ahead of its August premiere.

Filming for “Memories of the Sword” concluded early last year with an initial anticipated release date in fall 2014, but the film faced delays due to Lee’s blackmail legal dispute.

The teaser has logged over 1 million views on Korea’s top search engine Naver, since its release on Thursday. On its first day, the teaser racked up some 620,000 views.

The movie is expected to be a summer blockbuster, since all three lead actors are major celebrated stars in Korea. Competing films are action flicks “Assassination” and “Veteran.”

The likely blockbusters for summer 2015

BY JIN EUN-SOO [jin.eunsoo@joongang.co.kr] INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily

Posters for this summer’s box office lineup from Korea’s four major film distributors. From left, Showbox’s “Assassination,” CJ Entertainment’s “Veteran,” Next Entertainment World’s “The Beauty Inside” and Lotte Entertainment’s “Memories of the Sword.” Provided by each distributor

Summer is always an exciting season for movie aficionados because there is an abundant choice of films at the theaters.

And it is an exciting and anxious period for film distributors because it is the time they bid high by releasing their most anticipated projects.

After a series of rearranged opening dates, the four major distributors in Korea - CJ Entertainment, Lotte Entertainment, Showbox and Next Entertainment World - are confirming their summer season lineup.

Below is the Summer of 2015’s most anticipated releases.

Showbox’s “Assassination”

Star director Choi Dong-hoon of “The Thieves” (2012) returns with a heavier film both in terms of budget and ambience by revisiting the 1930s, when Korea was under Japanese colonial rule.

Acknowledging that the younger generation (including himself) is not very aware of that dark era, Choi said that he was determined to introduce a fictional four-member team that has an assassination scheme to wipe out key figures of the Japanese regime.

The 18 billion won ($16.2 million) production includes a stellar cast including Lee Jung-jae, Ha Jung-woo and Cho Jin-woong. Above all, the appearance of Jun Ji-hyun, arguably the fantasy woman for each and every Korean man, assured a lot of limelight since the film got underway.

Jun plays talented sniper Ahn Ok-yoon, who is also the team’s leader. Diverging from her extravagant and flashy roles in the hit television drama “My Love From The Stars” and blockbuster “The Thieves,” Jun shows a more humble demeanor playing a hardheaded independence fighter.

During a press event on Monday at Apgujeong CGV in southern Seoul, Jun revealed that looking natural while holding a rifle was her biggest challenge. That led to strenuous rehearsals performing gun-shooting actions while leaping between buildings.

Actor Lee, who plays Yeom Seok-jin, a member of Korea’s provisional government, said that he lost more than 15 kilograms (33 pounds) to play the role and struggled with the agonizingly complex mind of Yeom.

The film opens on July 22.

CJ Entertainment’s “Veteran”

When it comes to summer box office choices, there is no better formula than a simple plot packed with action and humor.

The upcoming crime-action film “Veteran” directed by Ryoo Seung-wan will be the closest thing to that this summer.

Director Ryoo, who demonstrated his way with audiences’ hearts in films like “The Berlin File” (2012) and “Crying Fist” (2004), teamed up with some of the nation’s top-notch actors including Hwang Jung-min and Yoo Ah-in.

Hwang, who is dubbed the “10-million-viewers actor,” took on the character of tough detective Seo Do-chul, who shows no mercy when coming across unjustifiable actions.

While investigating a high-profile case, Seo finds out that arrogant young millionaire Jo Tae-oh (Yoo Ah-in) is pulling some strings behind the scenes. However, no matter how rigorously Seo’s team pursues him, Jo always escapes with the help of his great wealth and loyal followers.

The two men’s face-to-face denoument will be the highlight of the movie.

Maverick comic actors Yoo Hae-jin and Oh Dal-su will shine as the film’s scene-stealers.

“I wanted a vivid depiction of each and every unique character,” said director Ryoo in a press release.

“I hope that the refreshment of this two-hour film will be worth more than 200 or 2,000 hours of a joyful movie experience,” he added.

The film is set to open August 5.

Next Entertainment World’s “The Beauty Inside”

If someone is tired of mega-budget films that are full of shooting, running and destruction, “The Beauty Inside,” a fantasy romance directed by Baik Jong-yeol, is this summer’s must-see movie.

But this idiosyncratic film is not like romances people have seen before since it centers on a love story about a man named Woo-jin who wakes up every day in a new body. The bodies are of varying ages and nationalities, and even different genders.

The different actors who play Woo-jin include Yoo Yeon-seok, Lee Dong-wook, Park Shin-hye and Juri Ueno.

The story unfolds as Woo-jin falls in love with furniture store salesperson Yi-soo, played by Han Hyo-joo, who is confused by his many incarnations.

The film’s release date is August 20.

Lotte Entertainment’s “Memories of the Sword”

After delaying the release date due to lead actor Lee Byung-hun’s personal scandal early this year, period movie “Memories of the Sword” will finally open in August.

Directed by Park Heung-sik of “I Wish I Had a Wife” (2000), the film’s late Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) setting depicts three swordsmen whose fates turned them against each other.

Lee Byung-hun plays Yoo-baek. Jeon Do-yeon is Wol-so, while Kim Go-eun portrays Hong-yi.

The film cost 10 billion won to make. The exact release date has not been confirmed.

This is like finally.... The teaser look beautiful and the still too. Lotte Entertainment really stick to LBH and they also distribute Terminator movie in Korea.

I don't see any blogs doing translation about netizen comment after the teaser released. Not that they had anything good to say. Maybe some not liking LBH after what happened but what ever it is the official number viewers on naver said it otherwise. SMH at people said that nobody want to watch it because of LBH.

I know that Junho as the warrior but why he put on the robe to LBH... suspicious.

Is there Junho in the trailer, I think he must be somewhere especially in the forest scene and in the palace.

"The Assassination" VS "Veteran" VS "Memories of the Sword"

Source: TV Report via Hancinema.net

photo607949.jpg

Summer is the time when the theaters are most competitive. July is near and blockbusters which cost more than 10 billion won, took the plates.

Distributors of these blockbusters spend many sleepless nights during the summer season. "The Admiral: Roaring Currents" set a record last year that no one can break, but this year, it's different.

Three distributors have come out with major films that no one knows of yet. There are only rumors.

However, each of these movies have a story to tell. The three distributors have no choice but to hold it in until the public has a say. -

Showbox – "The Assassination"

Showbox was first to throw out a hat into the ring.

Based in Shanghai in the 1930s, a group of assassins are called in to wipe out the pro-Japanese.

"The Assassination" comes out on the 22nd of July. Showbox gathered 10 million people with "The Thieves" in 2012 and is challenging its own record with director Choi Dong-hoon.

Showbox is determined to recover the loss of "KUNDO : Age of the Rampant" with "The Assassiantion". "Kundo" was first to come out last year but was no match for "The Admiral: Roaring Currents".

"The Assassination" stars Ha Jeong-woo, Lee Jeong-jae and Jeon Ji-hyeon.

- CJ E&M – "Veteran"

The second distributor CJ E&M is out with criminal movie "Veteran".

"Veteran" is about a group of investigators who track down a snobbish third generation plutocrat starring Hwang Jeong-min who starred in "Ode to My Father" last year. The movie is out on the 5th of August.

"Veteran" was lined up for release in May but internal reactions pushed it to August.

CJ E&M initially chose "Terminator Genisys" as its movie of the year but lost it and didn't have anything to bring about in the summer. However, "Veteran" came along and it became the savior that was going to recover the company image.

- Lotte Entertainment – "Memories of the Sword "

The final distributor is Lotte Entertainment. There were many ups and downs until it made its decision.

Lotte is coming out with "Memories of the Sword" at the end of August. At the end of the Koryeo Times, the best female sword fighter was a woman who had to hide her identity and sought to avenge her teacher and mother's death.

"Memories of the Sword" was initially scheduled to be released in fall last year but thanks to the Lee Byung-hun blackmail case, the movie was pushed from fall to winter, winter to spring and spring to summer. "Memories of the Sword" is unexplainable without Lee Byung-hun so it just waited for the right time. However, every good movie needs a good timing.

Lotte Entertainment is the only one without a 10 billion audience record. This summer, it hopes to break the record. The public's view of Lee Byung-hun is still not so warm although they have to admit, he's a good actor.
