The writer-director team from last year’s gripping daddy-revenge conspiracy drama The Chaser is getting the band back together for a new drama this summer called Empire of Gold, and is currently courting Lee Yo-won (The Horse Healer) and Go Soo (Bandage) to headline. The Chaser’s star and daesang winner Sohn Hyun-joo has already signed on to reunite with the production team, along with Jang Shin-young.

The 30-episode drama is set to air in SBS’s Monday-Tuesday slot after Jang Ok-jung, and will tell the twenty-year epic of a rising chaebol empire. It begins in 1990 and follows the journey of a poor hero whose ambition grows feverishly after witnessing the misfortunes of his poor hardworking father. The heroine, meanwhile, is the second daughter of the giant conglomerate at the center of the story, who struggles between love and family loyalty as the hero goes head-to-head with her family’s company. It’s another political thriller very much in the same vein as The Chaser, this time with a focus on the turbulent economic era and a struggle for power within one family.

Park Geun-hyung is reprising his Chaser archetype as the head of the chaebol family, and this time Sohn Hyun-joo plays Park Geun-hyung’s eldest son, and oppa to the heroine. Oh interesting — he’ll play one of the baddies who clashes with the hero. Ryu Seung-soo(the prosecutor) and Jang Shin-young (the killer-instinct assistant) have also signed on, but no word yet on their characters.

I see a lot of the same themes and setups from The Chaser being reworked into a different set of characters — it’s actually a lot like Go Jun-hee’s storyline in that drama (chaebol daughter falls in love with prosecutor taking down her family, has to choose between daddy and justice), just brought to the forefront as the main storyline.

It’s a little less exciting that they’re doing such a familiar premise, but more of The Chaserain’t a bad thing in my book, so I’m interested to see if they can up their game and deliver another well-written epic dogfight for power. I don’t know if the romance will have that heart-tug that the daddy-daughter storyline did for The Chaser, but I’ll definitely be tuning in to find out.

Empire of Gold premieres in July on SBS.

Actress Yoon Seung-ah is coming back with a drama called "Empire of Gold".

"Empire of Gold" is a political drama about the struggle for emperor during the turbulent era of Korean finance in the early 1990s for 20 years. Actor Ko Soo and actress Lee Yo-won are already likely casts for the drama. Yoon Seung-ah will take on Ko Soo's sister role.

Apparently, Yoon Seung-ah is very excited for this drama as it's her first in a while.

"Empire of Gold" is created by producer Jo Nam-gook and writer Park Kyeong-soo and will be released in July.

Yoon Seung-ah who starred in the MBC drama "The Sun and the Moon" and Channel A "Panda and Hedgehog" has been busy with hosting the cable program "Sold Out" on 'On Style'. She also held a bazaar for stray dogs and the lonely elderly early this year.

Wow, I hurt my head read those unofficial synopsis. It'll be back-and-forth cutthroats and switch alliances between those three, such ill-fated relationships. The one most disturbing is number 2:  where hero+heroine's bro against the heroine. How could they!?  [-(   2 guys ganged upon a woman, both have very close relationship with her. Now I'm very interested and curious with the heroine, what's her character will be like. I'm hooked with the premise already.
But still, don't believe too much in it. Even official synopsis often were so misleading, not to mention this so early and unofficial one  )

Actress Yoon Seung-ah is excited about the drama "Empire of Gold" in which she stars in a Hee-joo, Jang Tae-joo's (Ko Soo) sister.

The new SBS drama "Empire of Gold" is a collaboration by producer Jo Nam-gook and writer Park Kyeong-soo from "The Chaser". It is a political family drama about the fight for authority and power between a rich family during the turbulent political times in the early 1990's.

Yoon Seung-ah's role of Jang Hee-joo is a cute and bubbly person. She lives the life her brother wishes her to live and feels happiness from the smallest things but come to loath her brother when something happens.

Yoon Seung-ah has high expectations for "Empire of Gold". "I've only been in sitcoms and short dramas but now I'm worried about acting out a high school student when I am 29 now. There is a grown up version of me later which is the first time I'm acting out a character of my age. I am also honored to work with fellow actors and actresses like Ko Soo, Son Hyeon-joo, Park Geun-hyeong and others".

Meanwhile, SBS drama "Empire of Gold" will be aired in July after "Jang Ok-jeong".
