Dec 2, 2022

What many K-dramas have in common no matter the genre is the existence of chaebol characters, meaning that they are part of families that own major conglomerates. Yeon: “Heirs

heirs-1.jpeg

This topic can’t be discussed without mentioning “Heirs”…arguably THE chaebol drama of all chaebol dramas. Although it is mainly focused on the love story of chaebol heir Kim Tan (Lee Min Ho) and his family’s housekeeper’s daughter Cha Eun Sang (Park Shin Hye), almost all the characters in the drama are chaebols. Featuring a star-studded cast also including Kim Woo Bin, Krystal, Kim Ji Won, Kang Min Hyuk, Kang Ha Neul, and Park Hyung Sik, the series explores all sorts of stories about the elite class including conflict, romance, friendships, broken families, and more. Whether or not the portrayals of chaebols are realistic, it’s entertaining to watch what goes on in a world that most of us are not very familiar with personally—and even better to see our favorite actors in those roles! With the perfect balance of drama, comedy, and romance, “Heirs” is a legendary drama that never gets old.

Watch “Heirs” below:

The 9 Best K-Drama Series Featuring Rich or Elite Characters

Some of the most interesting tales involve high society—the rich, the elite, the snobby. Live vicariously with these K-drama series!

DEC 10, 2022

"Rich boy, poor girl" is one of the most common tropes in Korean drama series, meant to draw out all kinds of romantic plotlines. Sometimes it's inverted with a rich girl and poor boy.

One step above this trope is when the characters aren't just rich but elite. They come from world-class families, attend world-class schools, and find employment at world-class companies.

Beyond just romance, these types of K-drama series put the lens on themes of greed, power, inheritance, social inequality, and class warfare.

They also set the stage for all kinds of infuriating tropes, like high school students who bully the weak and evil CEOs who trample over society in pursuit of money and influence.

More recently, K-dramas have taken these tropes and subverted them in clever and interesting ways, resulting in twists—both on plots and on characters—that feel fresh and suck you in.

Here are our picks for the greatest K-drama TV series featuring rich and elite characters and their lives.

4. Heirs (2013)

Heirs stars two of the biggest names in the South Korean drama industry: Lee Min-ho as Kim Tan and Park Shin-hye as Cha Eun-sang).

It follows the complicated love story of Kim Tan and Cha Eun-sang as they're trapped in between fulfilling his duty as the heir of the company or pursuing their love for one another.

Heirs is made even more thrilling with Kim Tan already being engaged to Yoo Rachel (Kim Ji-won), along with Eun-sang always being the target of the badass bully, Choi Young-do (Kim Woo-bin).

Apart from Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye, this Drakor also features a number of well-known stars. Call it Kim Woo Bin, Kim Ji Won, Kang Min Hyuk, Krystal Jung and Park Hyung Sik.

This drama won a number of prestigious awards. The Heirs won 12 trophies at the 2013 SBS Drama Awards. Park Shin Hye was also chosen as the most popular TV actress at the 50th Baeksang Arts Awards. This series is also popular overseas, one of which is China. Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye won the Popular Foreign Actor and Actress trophy at the 18th Anhui TV Drama Awards.

Carrying the classic love story of a rich young man and a simple girl, Lee Min Ho and Park Shin Hye's chemistry is the main attraction of this drama, which is also known as The Inheritors. What's the storyline like?

This Drakor tells the life of high school students who come from wealthy families. Having everything to be ready to become the heir to a big company owned by their parents, does not make their life smooth. Kim Tan (Lee Min Ho), was born from a conglomerate man's affair with his mistress. He was then recognized as the child of the second wife to obtain legal inheritance rights.

This makes his half brother, Kim Won (Choi Jin Hyuk) feel threatened. So that Kim Won could secure the family company, he sent Kim Tan to continue his education in the United States.

In Uncle Sam's Country, Eun Sang and Kim Won meet by chance. Kim Won is fascinated by Eun Sang even though he is betrothed to Yoo Rachel (Kim Ji Won), who also comes from a wealthy family.

Go home

Back in Korea, Kim Tan finds that his former friend who is now his enemy, Choi Young Do (Kim Woo Bin) is trying to seize Eun Sang to heat him up.

Things get even more complicated after Choi Young Do really falls in love and intends to win Eun Sang's heart. Meanwhile, Kim Tan is under pressure from his family to choose between the girl he loves or focusing on continuing his business and maintaining his good name by marrying an equal woman.
