Heo Jun is Joseon's grand physician who set the foundations for traditional Korean medicine with his systematic compilation of its subjects in his greatest work, Dongui Bogam (동의보감/東醫寶鑑).

Heo Jun's (1539~1615) courtesy name () is Cheong-won (청원/淸源) and his pen name (雅號) is Guam (구암/龜岩).


He is the 20th generation descendant of Heo Seon-mun (허선문/許宣文), the progenitor of the Yangcheon Heo clan who also became the commune leader of Gongam during the reign of King Taejo in the Goryeo dynasty.


Though born as an illegitimate, he chose to walk the path of medicine and was soon called in to the royal court for medical service in his early 30's. By the time was 36, his talents were widely recognized for him to step up to the responsibility of examining and diagnosing the King's conditions.

 
When the Imjin Waeran War (임진왜란/壬辰倭亂) broke out, he escorted and looked after King Seonjo until the very end of the King's refuge in Uiju with his responsibilities as a royal physician.


At that time, many of the courtiers abandoned their King and took flight to retain their lives, with only a minute few remaining by King Seonjo to escort him to the very end of his refuge.


Heo Jun devoted himself in practicing medicine, and left behind him many accomplishments and writings. In particular is his greatest achievement, Dongui Bogam (동의보감/東醫寶鑑), which he published during his time in exile. Completed in 1610 when he was aged 71, it has left a significant legacy in world medicine.

1539 - Born as an illegimate son of Heo Ron  (허론/許碖)

1571 - 32 years old - First records of Heo Jun’s post as Cheomjeong (첨정/僉正), a junior 4th rank official of Naeuiwon (내의원/內醫院), the government office that oversaw the royal family's health and medical affairs

1573 - 34 years old - Appointed to the position of Naeuiwonjeong (내의원정/內醫院正), a senior 3rd rank official

1575 - 36 years old - First records of Heo Jun’s clinical examination and treatment of the King in company with royal physician Ahn Gwang-ik

1581 - 42 years old - Completed editing of Chando Bangron Maekgyeol Jibseong (찬도방론맥결집성/簒圖方論脈集成)

1590 - 51 years old - Received the title of Tongjeongdaebu (통정대부/通政大夫), a senior 3rd rank, for curing the Crown Prince

1591 - 52 years old - Received the rank of Dangsanggwan (당상관/堂上官), a palace-ascendable official

1592 - 53 years old - Escorted King Seongjo in his refuge to Uiju during the outbreak of the Imjin Waeran War (임진왜란/壬辰倭亂)

1596 A.D. 57 years old - Received the title of Jeongheondaebu (정헌대부/正憲大夫), a senior 2nd rank official, for treating the Crown Prince. Received orders from King Seonjo to compile Dongui Bogam

1601 - 62 years old - Records of references to his title at the time as Su-ui (수의/首醫), the head doctor of Naeuiwon Compiled Eonhae Gugeupbang(언해구급방/諺解救急方), Korean Annotations on Emergency Prescriptions; and Eonhaeng Taesan Jibyo (언행태산집요/諺解胎産集要), Korean Annotations on Gynaecology Compiled Eonhae Duchang Jibyo (언해두창집요/諺解痘瘡集要), Korean Annotations on Smallpox

1604 - 65 years old - Awarded the title of Hoseong Gongshin (호성공신/扈聖功臣), meaning Meritorious Subject, for his service to the King during his refuge to Uiju. Became Sungnokdaebo (숭록대부/崇祿大夫), a junior 1st rank official

1606 - 67 years old - Due to receive the title of the senior 1st rank, but canceled due to the opposition of other officials

1607 - 68 years old - Published Eonhaeng Taesan Jibyo (언행태산집요/諺解胎産集要), Korean Annotations on Gynaecology

1608 - 69 years old - Publishes Eonhae Gugeupbang(언해구급방/諺解救急方), Korean Annotations on Emergency Prescriptions; and Eonhae Duchang Jibyo (언해두창집요/諺解痘瘡集要), Korean Annotations on Smallpox. Held responsible for death of King Seonjo, and exiled to Uiju

1609 - 70 years old - Released from Exile

1610 - 71 years old - Completed Dongui Bogam (25 chapters in 25 volumes)

1612 - 73 years old - Published Chando Bangron Maekgyeol Jibseong (찬도방론맥결집성/簒圖方論脈集成)

1613 - 74 years old - Published Dongui Bogam Published Shinchan Byeokonbang (신찬벽온방/新纂辟溫方), Newly Edited Prescriptions for Febrile Diseases; and Byeokyeok Sinbang (벽역신방/璧疫神方), New Prescriptions for Scarlet Fever
