image.jpg?w=600

The upcoming KBS drama, "Heaven's Order," tells the story of an innocent man, whose life is ruined by a poisonous plot.

Choi Won is an herbal doctor who treats members of the royal family. The talented physician and single father, played by Lee Dong Wook, is not particularly interested in achieving fame or success. He simply wants to practice his craft and care for his daughter, who suffers from an incurable disease.

Through no fault of his own, Choi Won is implicated in a plot to poison King Injong. The doctor is accused of treason and must run away to save his life. He is forced to live as a fugitive.

The focus of his life becomes clearing his name and finding a cure for his terminally ill daughter, Choi Rang, played by Kim Yoo Buin. For years, the hardworking widower has tenderly cared for the little girl, making time for such chores as braiding her hair.

At work, a female doctor, Hong Da In, serves as his assistant. Played by Song Ji Hyo, she continues to stand by him when he is accused and helps to clear his name. Song Ji Hyo, who played the ballerina first love of the prince in "Princess Hours" and the queen in movie "A Frozen Flower," has earned rave reviews from fellow cast members for her work in this drama. A spokesperson on the set said that she never stops being her character even when the camera stops.

The 24-episode historical thriller also stars Yoon Jin Yi as a bandit's daughter. The actress learned horseback riding specially for the role. It also stars 2AM's Im Seulong as the Crown Prince Lee Ho, a royal whose experiences have taught him to trust no one. Phillip Choi plays the hero's friend and fellow physician while Song Jong Ho is the man who must pursue the fugitive doctor.

Yoon Jin Yi was last seen as Im Meara in "A Gentleman's Dignity." Im Seulong appeared in "Dream High" and "Personal Taste." Phillip Choi was seen as Park Hyung Il in "The Empress" and Song Jong Ho is a runway model, who debuted n "Answer Me, 1997."

Lee Jin Seo, a former actor, best known for his portrayal of historical characters, will direct the series. Choi Min Gi is the screenwriter.

Lee Dong-wook as doting father in Mandate of Heaven

by girlfriday | March 27, 2013 | 43 Comments

Mandate4.jpg

So. Cute. My curiosity was already piqued when they called KBS’s upcoming sageuk thriller Mandate of Heaven a Joseon-era Ajusshi, but the stills of lead actor Lee Dong-wook on set with his tv daughter (played by rookie child actress Kim Yu-bin) are enough to make anyone’s heart go gooey. Who needs tough guy ajusshi when you can have a hair-braiding, hand-holding, doting daddy as your hero?

The 24-episode sageuk stars Lee Dong-wook as a royal physician who gets framed in an assassination plot against the king, and suddenly ends up a fugitive on the run. At the same time he’s racing against the clock to cure his daughter, who’s dying from an illness. Damn. If this is directed well (with unrelenting tension from the moment he’s on the run till the end), it could be amazing. If they loosen their grip on the suspense in any way, then we’re looking at a more standard conspiracy drama. I won’t set my expectations too high, but it’d be awesome to have a taut thriller thrown into the spring fusion sageuk/rom-com mix.

Song Ji-hyo plays a medical assistant who falls in love with him, and Yoon Jin-yi (A Gentleman’s Dignity) is the rough-and-tumble daughter of a bandit who helps him when he’s a fugitive. I already like the Man on the Run setup, and I don’t know how much time he’ll have for romance with his daughter to save and his name to clear, but I can’t imagine they’d cast two leading ladies and not make time for ANY romance, right?

Im Seul-ong (26 Years) plays the crown prince, who lives a very tense life in the palace, wary of everyone and everything. There have been countless attempts on his life since the day he was born, and the only person he trusts is Lee Dong-wook, because he saved him once as a little boy. It looks like the actors have taken to their onscreen friendship like two peas in a pod — they could almost pass for twins. Maybe that’ll come in handy down the line?

Mandate of Heaven follows IRIS 2 and premieres April 24 on KBS.
