Synopsis:The HK native born SZETO PAK YU (Roger Kwok) works hard running a travel agency. Because he helped his girlfriend (Angela Tong) pay off debts, he goes bankrupt, but still carried a never-give-up spirit and continues striving for to make a better living. His cousin KO YAU LAM (Wong Cho Lam) grew up in China and came to Hong Kong to pursue a singing career. The cousins ends up under one roof and due to the cultural differences, they frequently run into conflicts, which brings laughter along the way. TVB comedy series Inbound Troubles has caught a lot of attention due to the incorporation of China & Hong Kong current events -- "rude tour guide" and "famous brand stores refuses to let HK people take photos", which has displeased many local viewers. Just after three days since the series premiere, TVB and the Broadcasting Authority received 64 complaints. Viewers were upset that the story widens the China-HK controversy, insults HK people and beautifies Mainlanders. She has appeared in several series before, namely You're Hired!, Every Move You Make, and Silver Spoon, Sterling Shackles. She can consider to have rich acting experiences.

Aside from acting, Corinna can sing too! When she was studying in HKAPA, she majored in musical theater. She has a good music foundation and singing skills. Corinna sang Jacky Cheung's Love Is Eternity (愛是永恆) before and in 2007 she participated in the chorus at pop queen Sandy Lam's concert. In addition, she sang a duet with William So 來夜方長. TVB drama, "Inbound Troubles" is in trouble for stirring up controversies for its misunderstood representation of the mainland Chinese and Hong Kong citizens.

According to Asianpopnews website, the light-hearted drama, written by comedic actor Wong Cho Lam, initially intended to poke fun and celebrate the cultural conflicts between the mainlanders and the Hong Kong residents. But the plot has been severely blasted not only by mainland Chinese but also by Hong Kong citizens.

Viewers were particularly irked by Angela Tong's portrayal of a rude Hong Kong tour guide who scolded tourists, while Wong Cho Lam and Roger Kwok play a China citizen who speaks in poor Cantonese and a Hong Kong citizen who speaks in badly pronounced Chinese respectively.

The annoyance has even developed into harassments with Roger Kwok sharing that he was scolded while walking on the streets by a girl who chided him for badly representing Hong Kong citizens.

Producer Wong Wai Sing also experienced the same thing. Speaking to the media, the producer revealed that a viewer scolded him on the phone for the lack of humour in the drama, saying that the drama only deepened the tension between China and Hong Kong.

Wong revealed that although they only wanted to reflect the reality and did not intend for the relationship to worsen, the drama will only stop airing if the company decides for it to be.

The series has received 60 complaints till date. Rumours of impending censorship has proven to be true, as it was reported that TVB's controversial drama, "Inbound Troubles" have suffered from heavy editing for its first four episodes in mainland China.

According to Popular Asians website, it was revealed that approximately 10 minutes of footage from the first four episodes were cut from its mainland broadcast, including the scene where Wong Cho Lam's character, Choi Sum came across some Hong Kong protesters rallying outside a clothing store.

The censored scene reportedly was inspired by an actual controversy that occurred in January last year, when the staff at Dolce & Gabbana stopped Hong Kong citizens from taking pictures in front of their shop, but allowed mainland Chinese tourists to do so – sparking a rise of anti-mainlander sentiment.

However, despite the cuts and complaints, "Inbound Troubles" has already achieved an average of 1.92 million viewers in its first week of broadcast and sparked rumours of a movie version in the making.

"Inbound Troubles" is currently airing in mainland China through TVB's overseas channel and Chinese video streaming websites.

TVB series Inbound Troubles has been a huge hit recently with the ratings peaking at 37 points. Portraying Wong Cho Lam's good friend 'Sai Sai Lap' is Fei Mui Siu Bo (Real name: May Chan Ka Kai). She gained a lot of attention from this series and the 'HK Golden Forum' boys praised she'll be one hot and sexy girl if she losses the weight. As HK Golden's Goddess, the 27 year old actress is still single and a virgin. Recently, she's been actively trying to lose weight and vows to knock off 80 pounds of fat.

Hip bending was easy for Siu Bo, but having to lift her whole body up is definitely going to be a challenge for her. Indeed, due to her heavy body weight, Siu Bo was unable to lift her body up. With the encouragement from reporters, she tried 5 more times and barely got her feet off the ground.

Skipping - FAIL

It seems that not everybody is okay with "Inbound Troubles" actor Wong Cho Lam's scriptwriting venture, as it was reported that the again has received a complaint from his fellow TVB scriptwriters.

Popular Asians reported that on 15 January, Cat Kwan, the award-winning screen writer for the 1999 film, "Tempting Heart", wrote on her Weibo, "I read a report that wrote: 'New drama, co-written by Wong Cho Lam, discusses about contradicting social differences between China and Hong Kong; many sensitive topics were already played with in the premiere episode.' Does 'co-written' mean that he is part of the scriptwriting [team]? Then I am very curious to which episode Mr. Wong wrote, because I am really interested in re-watching it for my enjoyment."

The screenwriter continued, "To the lovely audience and all my friends, can you please tell me which episode Mr. Wong was in charge of after viewing the ending credits? If you can't find it, then TVB must have many scriptwriters. The number of people who contributed ideas to dramas is endless."

The criticism comes after the actor received critical commendation for his bravery in helming the controversial "Inbound Troubles" script, which touches on the cultural differences between Hong Kong and mainland China.

However, the actor, who heard of Cat's dubious comment, posted a response on Weibo, saying "Beloved Ms. Kwan, you are a scriptwriter that I respected very much. When I was working with the other ["Inbound Troubles"] scriptwriters, we would always bring up your masterpiece "Tempting Heart", and till this day, my heart is still tempted. It is very rare for TVB to have such a great and golden scriptwriter like you!"

The actor continued, "As for which episode I wrote, there was none. Not even one. However, I had a part in every episode: I had a part in designing the characters and their relationships with the scriptwriters; coming up with the synopsis for each episode; in research, brainstorming, and outlining each episode; in designing each episode's climax, comedic, and emotional timing; I also took part in sharing stress, etc. with other scriptwriters.

Why is my name not credited after each episode? I asked about it before, but everyone knew that I already had a part in writing the show. I hope the audience will take notice in other scriptwriters and commend them. Our team of scriptwriters does not care about title. We just want to quietly and creatively work on a script together."

The actor also spoke in an interview a few days later, admitting that it was a mistake when TVB announced that he would be co-writing the "Inbound Troubles" script.

He stated, "I understood that I could have directly contacted Tommy Leung about my ideas. I also used a lot of non-TVB cast and crew members. This made a lot of people unhappy, and I have heard people gossiping about me. But I hope they will be able to understand me. I only want to write a good script so the audience can enjoy, not trying to steal anybody's rice bowl. I've always respected TVB scriptwriters."

Actor-writer Wong Cho Lam recently revealed that the sequel to the controversial hit TVB drama, "Inbound Troubles" may be filming its sequel and movie version at the end of the year.

Popular Asians website reported that on 8 February, the cast members of "Inbound Troubles" gathered in Tuen Mun for a dinner to watch the finale together. At the event, Wong Cho Lam disclosed, "The earliest the sequel for the series and the movie version will be produced is at the end of this year. It will consist of the original cast, but there will be a brand new plot line."

Earlier, it was rumoured that Cantopop singer, Hins Cheung was invited to film the sequel. To this, Wong Cho Lam said, "There is a possibility for that. When the series is popular, it is easier to invite others to participate."

Hong Kong TV Drama Plays Out Uneasy Ties With China

HONG KONG — The tensions between residents here and mainland Chinese visitors dominate the headlines of the city’s papers, with mainlanders blamed for a shortage of school slots, bad manners in stores and a hypercharged property market.

So it should come as little surprise that a television show would come along to tap into these anxieties and, perhaps in a gift to the show’s producers, also draw the attention of mainland censors.

“Inbound Troubles” tells the story of two cousins — one from Hong Kong and the other from the mainland — and the tensions in a city whose wealth increasingly rests on a flood of mainland visitors who nevertheless draw scorn for lavish spending and, some say, boorish ways.

In the show, the cousin from mainland China is shown littering, running red lights and parking illegally, while the one from Hong Kong makes his living with a travel agency that specializes in encouraging new arrivals from the mainland to part with more of their cash.

The TVB network program, which has just ended its monthlong run, was shown as the city’s leadership struggled to confront the latest supposed peril attributed to mainlanders: a shortage of baby formula said to have been caused by the hoarding of supplies by mainland Chinese who have crossed the border into Hong Kong (apparently out of fear of tainted supplies in China).

Some Hong Kong residents have become so agitated about the formula milk problem that they have asked the United States to intervene, using a petition on the White House Web site titled, “Baby Hunger Outbreak in Hong Kong, International Aid Requested.”

The petition, created in late January, has already drawn 23,000 signatures.

The show’s candid depictions of mainland-Hong Kong relations — one scene focuses on the formula shortage — have drawn hundreds of complaints to Hong Kong regulators from viewers upset at things like its portrayals of mainlanders and its depiction of the Hong Kong’s tourism industry as predatory. And Chinese officials censored trailers for the program on the mainland, where it could be viewed on TVB’s overseas channel or through video streaming.

China also did some trimming of the version shown on the mainland, once the program began there. It deleted a depiction of a protest outside a Hong Kong clothing store, a scene apparently based on a demonstration against a Dolce & Gabbana store that let free-spending mainlanders photograph merchandise while barring Hong Kong residents from doing the same.

Still, the show clearly struck a nerve, becoming the TVB channel’s highest-rated drama this year.

To some, the tensions captured in the show are a natural outgrowth of fears about Beijing’s increasing influence in Hong Kong, a former British colony that retained considerable legal autonomy and civil rights after it was handed back to China in 1997.

“Politically, more and more Hong Kongers resent the fact that Beijing is tightening its control over Hong Kong’s political development,” Willy Lam, a scholar on Chinese history and politics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, wrote in an e-mail.

He added that the current leader of Hong Kong, Leung Chun-ying, “is seen as a yes-man chief executive bowing to every instruction from the mainland authorities.”

“There is a common feeling that fat-cat mainlanders are driving up real estate prices,” he said. “You have witnessed of course the drama over formula milk powder.”

Although polls show that an increasing number of Hong Kong residents hold pessimistic views about the city’s future and Hong Kong-mainland relations, in “Inbound Troubles” the two cousins gradually acclimate to each other, with the one from the mainland adapting to local ways.

Viewers say they appreciate the show’s realistic depictions of the shifting social dynamics of Hong Kong and the growing impact of mainland China and its visitors on the city.

“I have a few bad experiences with mainlanders — most of them have to do with them jumping queues or being rude,” said Tai Wing-yi, a student at Hong Kong Baptist University. “But not all are like that. Some of my classmates are from the mainland, and they are nice to be around, and they work hard. In fact, they are the ones who contribute more than the locals in group projects.

“The show highlighted the tension between mainland Chinese and locals in a funny way, and got the message across in a lighthearted manner,” she said.

Chen Min, a mainland journalist who has visited Hong Kong many times, said his social circle in the city included many more-educated and better-off local residents, who were usually polite, but that not all encounters were so smooth.

“Occasionally you run into problems that you didn’t encounter before,” he said. “Like a taxi driver who refuses to take you because you speak Mandarin, although you’re holding a map and address in Chinese.”

On another occasion, Mr. Chen said, he was lugging a heavy suitcase to a taxi. “The driver joked, ‘Carrying cash to buy an apartment?’ ”

The popularity of the show — there is already talk of a movie — suggests that it could pave the way for treatments with similar themes, much as, in the United States, “All in the Family” started a subgenre of politically tinged situation comedies during the turbulence of the Vietnam War.

In an opinion piece in Global Times, a populist mainland newspaper, Wendy Wang, a freelance writer from Shanghai, noted that mainlanders had long been derided on Hong Kong television, with men often portrayed as mobsters and women as flirty or worse.

But after the 1997 return of Hong Kong to Chinese rule, “mainlanders’ characters grew wealthier but not wiser,” she wrote.
