Lee Jong Seok, Kim Woo Bin, Park Se Young, 5dolls’ Hyoyoung Cast as Main Students for ‘School 5’

2012-10-29 16:37  l   CJ E&M enewsWorld Stewart Ho

The cast of main students for KBS’ upcoming season of the famed School series has been confirmed.

KBS has confirmed actors Lee Jong Seok, Kim Woo Bin, Park Se Young and 5dolls’ member Ryu Hyo Young will make up the main students cast for the upcoming drama School 5.

A member of the production staff shared, “The four actors will each show their individual merits to tell the wide range of stories inside the school.”

Lee Jong Seok will play the main character Go Nam Soon, a hard working student who is hit by an unforeseen circumstance in life that will affect his student life.

Park Se Young will play Song Ha Kyung, a student from an affluent background who possesses both good looks as well as good grades and typically scores within the top 0.1 percent of her school.

Kim Woo Bin is set to play the rebellious Park Heung Soo, who was held back a grade for his flunking grades. Though cold and aloof on the outside, he carries a deeply hidden emotional scar inside.

Lastly, 5dolls’ Ryu Hyo Young, the twin sister of T-ara’s former member Hwa Young, will play Lee Kang Joo a girl with a boyish and tough personality.

Choi Daniel and Jang Nara will make up the cast as the school’s teachers with Park Hae Mi playing the school’s principal.

School 5 comes ten years after the last installment of the famed series, which previously starred today’s top stars like Jang Hyuk, Jo In Sung, Kim Min Hee, Ha Ji Won and more.

School 5 will begin airing in December and take over Ulala Couple’s time slot.

DRAMA CASTING & NEWS
Character lineup for School’s student cast

by javabeans | October 29, 2012 |

school2.jpg
Lee Jong-seok, Kim Woo-bin

Finally, some details about 2013 School! Other than the previously released bits about there being actors playing teachers, and actors playing students, that is. Because when your title is School, those don’t count as plot points.

As we already know, the main leads in the younger generation will be Lee Jong-seok andKim Woo-bin, who’ve both played endearing high school characters in recent history (High Kick 3 and A Gentleman’s Dignity, respectively). On the girls’ side, Park Se-young(Faith) goes from queen to teen as the main lead, and 5dolls idol Ryu Hyo-young plays a supporting character. In the teachers’ generation, we have Daniel Choi and Jang Nara as opposites who probably attract; he’s wildly popular, rich, and smart, while she’s more our everywoman type.

Lee Jong-seok’s character is named Go Nam-soon and just wants to live an ordinary life with the simple goal of getting that high school diploma. But contrary to his wishes, “unexpected circumstances” arrive and shake up his calm environment, and spur him to grow up.

Lee’s dong-gap buddy Kim Woo-bin (both are 1989-ers) appears to be at the core of the sudden shake-up as mysterious transfer student Park Heung-soo. He has flunked a grade and been held back; a rebellious attitude masks his loneliness, since he acts out as a result of having to give up his dream.

Park Se-young, Ryu Hyo-young

Park Se-young’s character is Song Ha-kyung, who’s the girl who seems to have everything: good looks, good grades, good family. But she’s fixated all her efforts purely into getting results on paper, scoring the high marks and getting into a prestigious college, “without a dream driving her goals.” I feel like this is a type that should speak to a lot of students who are pushed to achieve at extreme levels, but who then find themselves adrift when let loose into the real world.

Ryu Hyo-young appears to be the opposite as a tough tomboy, Lee Kang-joo. She’s got a carefree attitude with an easygoing personality, though you probably don’t want to richard simmons her off since “her foot moves faster than her words.”

I’m feeling optimistic with the characterizations, which indicate room for growth and development on multiple fronts. Chemistry will have a lot to do with how well they jell, but as for potential it’s all there. The show is described as tackling realistic situations to cut straight to the heart for students and parents alike, which suggests that it’ll have a less slapstick/sitcommy vibe and go more for poignant and lightly dramatic. I dig that a lot, since I’m all for more Answer Mes and Shut Ups in dramaland. *knocks wood*

2013 School follows Oohlala Spouses and premieres in early December.

The cast of KBS’ School 2012 has successfully finished its first script reading.

The entire cast and staff of the new chapter of the famed School series gathered at the KBS headquarters on November 1 to familiarize themselves with each other and to hold their first script reading.

Jang Nara, Choi Daniel, Park Hae Mi and the other veteran actors helped lead the younger actors as they poured their passion and charisma into their lines like the professionals they were.

The younger actors, cast as the students in the drama, including Lee Jong Seok, Ryu Hyoyoung, Kim Woo Bin and others brought their youthful energy and zeal to the reading as they received praise in displaying their individual characters’ personalities and merits.

In between, the longtime actors such as Lee Han Wee were seen looking after their juniors and handing out advice, reflecting the already close-knit and positive atmosphere of the drama production.

The first episode of the newly revived series will air on December 3 on KBS.

All dressed up and ready for School

by javabeans | November 5, 2012 |

school4.jpg

Here’s our first look at the cast, in character, for KBS’s upcoming drama School 2013 — which appears to (finally!) have settled on its title after a bunch of rather half-hearted changes (they flirted with 2013 School, then School 5). You’d think if they were going to be so wishy-washy they could have at least entertained something more… well, entertaining.

Naming aside, I’m looking forward to the show, which remakes the ’90s series that featured so many of today’s big stars. The leads in the younger generation — namely,Lee Jong-seok, Kim Woo-bin, and Park Se-young — are dressed here in uniforms; they play students in their second year of Seungri High School (so, 17- and 18-year-olds). It’s an ideal year for drama depiction (similar to how U.S. stories seem to favor junior year), given that the students are old enough to feel the turbulence of transitioning to adulthood, yet still have plenty of time ahead of them before graduating to university. And given the show’s premise, I think we’re going to be seeing plenty of adolescent turmoil and coming-of-age angst. I’m just crossing my fingers that they manage that balance in a skillful, poignant way.

Below are photos from the recent script rehearsal, which includes the adults in the cast. Namely, Jang Nara and Daniel Choi as teachers, as well as familiar comedy faces Lee Han-wi (To the Beautiful You, Wild Romance) and Park Hae-mi (Smile Dong-hae, Unstoppable High Kick).

Oohlala Spouses is reportedly still in talks over whether to extend by two episodes or not, but in any case that doesn’t seem to affect the premiere of School 2013, which will kick off on December 3.
