rubie
2006.06.02 Hanbando Deals with Unification A very large poster http://www.koreanfilm.or.kr/attach/tbnewd0...662174355_1.jpg Director KANG Woo-suk's latest film will be the big-budget Hanbando, a political thriller set in the near future when the two Koreas are close to unification. But Japan is determined to stop the unification from happening and the conflict might turn into an armed confrontation. Hanbando stars director KANG regular AHN Sung-gi as the South Korean president. JO Jae-hyun and CHA In-pyo play the characters who must find a solution to refute the legal historical claims the Japanese use to justify their actions with the intention to withhold the two Koreas from unification. The film deals with a sensitive subject, given the long history of friction between Korea and Japan, the colonization of Korea by Japan (1910-1945), and the recent conflicts over distortion of history in Japanese school's history books and Dokdo Island. The film is produced by newcomer K&J Entertainment. The company is headed by director/producers KANG, himself, and JANG Jin, producer of Welcome to Dongmakgol (2005). Hanbando will be released in cinemas on July 13. KANG Woo-suk is also the director of Silmido (2003), another big-budget film about the North-South division. Silmido became the highest grossing Korean film in 2003. At the moment it is the third most successful Korean film, it is outperformed by Taegukgi (2004) and King and the Clown (2005). KANG's better known films include: Two Cops (1993), Public Enemy (2002) and Another Public Enemy (2005). rubie
Cha In-pyo The premier of 'Season in the Sun.' The star of the movie Cha In-pyo was first among the cast to arrive, and was joined by countless fans, including his number one fan, his wife Shin Ae-ra. Several famous faces also turned up to show their support for the actor. Even while he is saying his hellos, the normally cool and collected Cha In-pyo appears nervous. Despite his worries, almost all the seats are filled. 'Season in the Sun' is a warm drama of the relationship that springs up between young children, a priest and a monk through the beautiful fame of football. Cha In-pyo plays the priest in the movie, which he says had special meaning to him. The movie had taken over 4 years to complete, from the writing of the screenplay, to its premier today. Perhaps for that reason, Cha says there were many memorable moments during its production. His effortless portrayal of a priest in the film has credited Cha with showing some of his best acting to date in this film. The actor made his silver screen debut with 'Zzang' in 1998, but even though he was enjoying the height of popularity at the time, his movie career never really took off. His second film 'Doctor K' bombed at the box office, and led to the theory that Cha In-pyo is unlucky with movies. In last year's 'Iron Palm,' Cha showed his potential in a different genre, comedy. However, it again failed to attract large crowds and instead, he returned to TV, regaining popularity with the extremely successful 'Her Place.' It provided a valuable lesson to the actor, that a TV star does not necessarily make a movie star. However, Cha In-pyo is not afraid to taste failure in order to realize his dream. It is this commitment to his art which has brought him so far, and will continue to carry him for many years to come. rubie
06-27-2006 'Hanbando' Strikes Nationalistic Nerve By Kim Tae-jong Staff Reporter Director Kang Woo-suk is not new to making controversial movies that deal with sensitive issues. In 2004, he made "Silmido," a widely successful film about a secret suicide commando squad the South Korean government planned to send to North Korea, and the "Public Enemy" series depicting the dirty connection between corruptive politicians, businessman and prosecutors in Korea. But Kang admits his latest film, "Hanbando," was not an easy feat, even for one at home with controversy. In "Hanbando" (the Korean Peninsula), Kang severely attacks Japan by painting the nation as the main opponent to the unification of North and South Korea and strongly criticizes Japan’s efforts to distort the history of their 1910-1945 occupation of the Korean Peninsula. "This is not a film that merely criticizes Japan without reason," Kang said Monday during a pre-screening news conference at Seoul Theater, downtown Seoul. "I think we have a right to ask them certain questions. Considering their thoughtless behavior, I really wanted to attack Japan through my film." He added the film was the hardest among his 15 films to make, but he believed a film criticizing and showing up Japan's brutality was seriously needed. "Japan shouldn't think they can erase the past by simply giving us money. I think they should show remorse for their past actions and make a sincere apology," Kang said. During the news conference Kang had to deal with many questions from reporters concerned over the movie's hypothetical situation and its strong nationalistic content. Due to the controversial theme, the film was made with little media exposure, which is rare for a film with such stature. Its production budget stands at 9.6 billion won. As most of Kang's films have been commercially successful, expectations about "Hanbando" have been high. His 2004 hit, "Silmido," was the first Korean film to break the 10-million audience and is the third most viewed film in Korean movie history. Based on a true story, it is a fictional account about what might happen when the two Koreas reach an agreement on unification. It also sheds light on the past brutality Japan brought on Koreans, including such tragic accidents as the murders of Queen Myongsong and King Kojong, the 26th king of the Choson Kingdom and the first emperor of the Taehan Empire. The film is set in South Korea's near future and develops a close relationship with the North for unification. The two Koreas agree to re-open a railway between the two but, as it constructed the railway during its colonial occupation of the peninsula, Japan claims ownership of the railway. To prove Japan has no right to ownership, a patriotic historian, with the cooperation with other progressive politicians and the president of South Korea, seeks a hidden seal of the king. They believe the original seal is a key to show that most contracts between Korea and Japan were either made forcibly, or were fake. "I did a lot of research. The part about the Great Seal of the King is of course fiction, but I found out that many documents during the Japanese colonial rule period were not properly sealed by the king, and Kojong, in his letters, denied justification for all the contracts with Japan," Kang said. Nonetheless, the film lacks action and has too many instructive dialogues between characters on big historical, diplomatic and political issues _ a possible disappointment for action film buffs. The film will be released nationwide on July 13. e3dward@koreatimes.co.kr 06-27-2006 17:13 Source: http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/culture/20...17130811690.htm

rubie
July 10, 2006 'Hanbando' Role Was Patriotic Duty for Cha In-pyo Driven by nationalist beliefs and the scenario of another Japanese invasion, the W10-billion (US$1=W942) movie “Hanbando (The Korean Peninsula)” is generating a controversy. In the film, Cha In-pyo plays a member of an elite government organization. But in stark contrast to the dire predictions of the movie, he was beaming when he told the Chosun Ilbo how the role was something he wanted and needed to do. Cha’s character Lee Sang-hyeon is, in the first half of the film, pro-Japanese but is converted to the noble causes of Korean unification and independence like a latter-day Paul. Why was the actor was so quick to choose a part whose political implications could become a liability in his acting career? "Before I even knew it, I found myself in middle age, and my thoughts began to revolve around the idea of unification. It’s true, I started to worry whether we were going to be able to hand a peaceful, unified country to our sons and daughters." What matters is confronting society and throwing out questions, he says. If the movie succeeds in that, Cha feels it will have been worth the unprecedented W10 billion budget. So committed is Cha that he repeatedly says he would have acted in the film for free. What were his feelings when he saw the finished product? "The reviews will be divided. But my conviction that the film is right, is unchanged. Even if the majority can’t sympathize, it would be great if the controversy generated more discussion." Director Kang Woo-suk said he cast Cha because the actor has shown his himself to be a very aware and honest performer. Cha confides that being saddled with the image of the upright man is a burden. "If my employer, the public, entrusts me with the upright character, it becomes my responsibility and my duty. So, if only to avoid disappointing my employer, I can’t act carelessly." At a recent event in Tokyo with some 1,200 fans, an NHK reporter asked the obvious question, "Why would you appear in a movie like 'Hanbando'?” Cha rose to the challenge. "I’m a citizen of the Republic of Korea, and in the film industry of the Republic of Korea, I don't think there is anyone who would have turned down the script," he said. Guest sandrydc
Someone please kindly summarize the article in English. Thanks in advance.

rubie
June 06, 2007 A star shines his light into the lives of others Cha In-pyo, sitting with photographs of children from the third world. Cha, 41, has made a name for himself as an actor with good looks and a good heart. By Shin In-seop Actor Cha In-pyo, 41, is an ambassador for volunteer organizations such as Good Neighbors, Compassion, and the Holt Children’s Services. These are organizations that help promote the rights of children in developing countries. The numerous charities that Cha supports show what a busy life he lives, constantly starring in soap operas and movies while also participating in children’s rights events. Yet Cha, in his modesty, is reluctant to accept the public’s growing admiration. “Just because a person helps lots of people does not mean that he has good qualities but many people tend to think that since ‘Cha is a straightforward man’ he would never make any illegal u-turns,” says Cha. The high expectations that people have of him entails great responsibility, which he sometimes feels is a burden. This April, Cha visited Ethiopia to meet a child he has been sponsoring. Last year he was in India doing the same thing. This year Cha, and his wife Shin Ae-ra, donated a part of their fees from TV commercials and they did the same last year. The JoongAng Ilbo met with him last month at Compassion House in Sinsa-dong, southern Seoul. Twenty young members of the Compassion Band had gathered to practice for a performance. The Band was founded in May 2006 to give aid through Compassion Korea. “Please be quiet during the rehearsals,” says Cha. His comments toward the band members show his force and discipline. Even though he is the leader of the band, Cha is “tone-deaf.” He said he is ignorant about dancing and singing, but it’s his efforts that really matter. “If I was talented in everything, I could have been quite arrogant,” said Cha. “After all, it’s all by the gift of God.” Recently, Cha’s continuous charity work has received some criticism. “I don’t mind,” says Cha. “I don’t do these things to satisfy other people but as a way to pursue my own happiness.” Turning the pages of his passport, he was surprised to see that the recent stamps are all from developing countries such as the Philippines, Mongolia, India and Ethiopia. “A long time ago, the stamps would have been from the U.S., European countries and Australia ― places of leisure. What’s ironic is that I am now more satisfied with life than before.” Cha says that his fame gives him a responsibility. “Celebrities have more opportunities to do good works but, if I point somewhere, the spotlight should be on what I’m pointing at, and not on my fingers,” says Cha. “People should not make hasty judgments and say, ‘He must have earned a lot of money,’ or ‘He just wants to be in the spotlight!’ If only people would not make such judgments, more celebrities would donate their money and time.” Cha’s focus is not limited to his charity work but is also on his marriage. In a recent survey by a marriage information agency, Cha was selected as “the star most women would like to marry” should he ever get divorced. Often, his romantic online writings to his wife have been subjects of conversation. However, like any couple they have had conflicts. “It’s most important that couples point in the same direction,” says Cha. Cha Su-ung, 67, Cha’s father, passed control of his company to an expert, not to one of his three sons. The fact that Cha the celebrity did not enter a new phase of being a CEO has left people with a positive impression. “It’s natural that none us should receive the right to take over, since we all have our own careers,” said Cha. Among celebrities, a dazzling marriage often leads to divorce and bad behavior, but Cha is seen as a sprinkle of rain amid drought. Because of this status, he is often asked to support political movements and his answer is always “No.” He says that he is interested in politics, but only as a member of the nation, not as a politician. “Past decades have shown us that politicians can not reunify our two countries.” Cha’s vision is to bring about reunification through non-governmental organizations.
