I was told about this. Well, basically, JH and a couple of other actors (like Song Seung Hoon) allegedly faked some sort of medical condition so they could get out of going to the military, which was why JH himself said in the interview that some actresses would probably consider playing alongside him a bad career move. But IMO, with Thank You having great ratings/reviews in Korea and from netizens, JH's back in the game, stronger than ever.

I think so too... I think it's really unfair to him. But who cares, now JH has the last word because Thank You really propelled him to popularity.

I wish JANG HYUK OPPA all the lucks. For sure when THANK YOU shown in the other countries, he will have a lot of fans and this forum will be very busy like the others. Well, just like KWON SANG WOO of STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN or BAE YONG-JOON Of WINTER SONATA. Anyway, he can really act and he's goodlooking too.

I was a bit sad, somehow that he considered himself as a con in deciding to do a drama. Like when he said all the stuff about actresses turning down the Young Shin role because they would have to act with him. Honestly, not just the celebrities who wants to escape from the tough 2 yrs of military stint. It is common also amongst commoners and they don't get to be in the limelight just because they are not celebrities. We must infact thank them for their acts cos in times of war, who goes out to fight for us? It is them, the guys who went thru military training.

Well, I honestly am a new JH fan, so I cannot say for certain about this. However, in my opinion why JH seemed to get a 'special' treatment, is because of his image all his career years. JH more often plays a bad boy, in a sense that even tho his characters are protagonists, there's always his infamous ssagaji quality in him. I saw 4 of his movies, and the one thing they had in common was the these stubborn, smart aleck trait. Compared JH to SSH who has more gentler, good guy roles than the bad boy ones. Hehe, I'm probably threading on thin ice, but that's just what I thought.

But anyways, I agree with ixora, let's just move on.

I've seen Jang Hyuk in movies and dramas before but was never a "fan."

However, his acting in Thank You really moved me. Thank You is the first drama since Autumn Tale that has made me cry during nearly every episode. I loved his character and his ability to express so many different emotions.

I hope that with the success of Thank You, people overlook the military scandal and give us more and more opportunity to see him on the big and small screen. He's a fabulous actor.

agree with all you guys on the military scandal thing. It is unfortunate that people still remember the 'bad' things from 2 years ago. But I'm happy that Hyuk is doing so well now..maybe now people won't think of the scandal anymore when they talked about Jang Hyuk.

Actually in Hyuk's interview in the second daum link that I posted Hyuk said something like "Military service really makes someone/a person great/cool." Everyone started laughing after hearing this. I'm sure people still remember the scandal so for Hyuk to say something like that is kindda funny..hehehe. Even Hyuk laughed right after he said those words. What's funny too is Ji Jin Hee also said that he's finished his ms..which means he is also a great/cool person. Gong Yoo in turn kindda smiled and they joked aout Gong Yoo not yet entering the military service.

same here, i'm also a new JH fan but the fact that he was the one who brought up about some actresses turning down the role of YS just because they knew the co-actor would be him is sad and ironic to me.

i only watch 2 JH dramas (TY and SSBG) and you're so right deeta...i first saw him in SSBG and also noticed this ssagaji image of him and frankly to say his acting back then was so cheesy, therefore i lost interest to the series & decided to stop watching it ever. i too got the impression of JH as a bad boy and it made me hesitate to watch TY at first....infact i didn't get why TY thread had so many pages but later on i'm glad that i decided to lurk in anyway.

well, i'm not also a fan of JANG HYUK OPPA before, i've seen him in BRIGHT GIRL, and he didn't caught my attention maybe bcoz he was still very young then but now, i love him, i can't forget him as MIN GI SEO. he's so perfect for the role. i'm now looking forward for his next project.

Jang Hyuk and Ha Jung Woo will become hosts in the movie ‘Beastie Boys’ to be directed by Director Yoon Jong Bin who once gathered attention with the film ‘The Unforgiven.’

The movie ‘Beastie Boys’ draws the story of two popular hosts who work at a host bar and try to escape their mundane daily life after making money, but find themselves entangled in complicated episodes after falling in love with someone.

The massage girl host Jang Hyuk falls in love with will be played by Yoon Jin Seo.

Director Yoon Jong Bin gathered attention through his film ‘The Unforgiven’ drawing upon the troubles and hardships of the young generation in 2005 which was featured at the Pusan International Film Festival. The film also starred Ha Jung Woo at the time.

Ha Jung Woo in an interview preceding the opening of ‘Second Love’ commented, “I have been involved with the movie ‘Beastie Boys’ ever since the scenario was being written and no it well. Since it is Director Yoon’s first commercial piece, I feel it natural for me to take part in it as well.”

Jang Hyuk who successfully had a come back through the drama ‘Thank You’ after completing his military service will broaden his scope of characters by turning into a host.

‘Beastie Boys’ will crank-in in mid-August with a budget of 2.5 billion KRW.

Just finished watching Jang Hyuk in Thank You, and have to say this, that he looks hundred times better than he was before he went to military training, it really did him good.

I've always thought JH is a great actor, and yeah i agree with most of u here, that he's underrated.

[별별토크] '고맙습니다'로 성공적 복귀…장혁 서른살의 군 생활로 '마음의 상처' 씻어 "잘못에 대한 당연한 대가…아쉬움 없어"

'주량 소주 3잔' 선언불구 군얘기로 '한병 훌쩍'

"데뷔10년…이제 분석보단 '감성적 배우'로"

배우 장혁은 소주 석잔을 비우는 것도 버거워할 만큼 알코올과 거리가 멀다. 연예계 주당들의 전유물이었던 별별토크에 나서면서 평소 주량의 세배를 너끈하게 소화해 냈다. 무려 여섯시간에 걸쳐서.

장혁은 2004년 병역 파문의 당사자로 말 그대로 피할 수 없는 군 생활을 뒤늦게 시작해야 했다. 가지 않아도 됐을 법한 머나먼 길을 돌고 돌아서 대중 앞에서 선 장혁은 여전히 조심스럽다는 인상이었다.

장혁은 술의 힘을 살짝 빌려 그간 대중에게 털어놓지 못했던 군복무 중 있었던 일과 화제의 드라마 MBC 수목미니시리즈 <고맙습니다> 후일담을 소탈하고 진지하게 털어 놓았다.

책의 한 구절을 따온 듯 진중한 비유와 간혹 무릎을 탁 치게 만드는 유머로 참석자들을 내내 즐겁게 했다. 예기치 못했던 깜짝 손님이 함께해 더욱 흥미로웠던 심야의 만남을 지면으로 옮겨본다.

#민기서로 다시 태어났다

언뜻 봐도 낯가림이 심한 것 같은 장혁이 강남의 한 시끌벅적한 술집에 나타났다. 서먹한 분위기에 빠질 수 없는 것이 주량 체크다.

이미 소주 석 잔이 치사량(?)이라는 사전 정보를 입수했지만 확인이 필요했다. 호기심많은 여기자(이재원기자ㆍ이하 이)가 슬쩍 물었다. “주량은 얼마나 되세요?”

“보통 석 잔 정도 마시면 어느새 집 안으로 옮겨져 있어요. 저희 말로는 오토매틱 순간이동 기계를 이용한다고 하죠.(웃음) 10년쯤 제가 데뷔를 막 했을 때였어요. 박중훈 선배님하고 조촐하게 술을 한 잔 할 기회가 있었어요. 대 선배님하고 술자리인데 얼마나 긴장이 됐겠어요. 그런 자리도 단 두 잔 만에 제가 먼저 잠들어 버렸다니까요.”

오늘은 좀 수월하지 않을까 하는 기자들의 안도가 잠시 흘렀을 무렵, 장혁이 첫 잔을 꺾지 않고 벌컥 삼킨다. “전 잔을 못 꺾겠어요. 술이 남아 있는 것이 마시면서도 신경 쓰여서요.”

묻지도 않았는데 튀어나오는 장혁의 설명이 범상치 않은 그의 고무줄 주량이 감지됐다.

자연스럽게 주제가 호평 가운데 끝난 드라마 <고맙습니다>로 넘어갔다.

장혁은 이번 드라마에서 상처를 가진 의사 민기서로 분했다. 자신의 무기력함과 과오를 용서 받고 싶어하면서 결국 마지막에 희망을 깨닫게 되는 인물이다.

여러모로 장혁의 개인사와 겹쳐지는 부분이 있다. 시청자들도 그런 장혁과 민기서를 포개면서 드라마에 더욱 몰입할 수 있었던 것도 사실이다.

장혁의 말끔한 말솜씨에 점차 매료된 남 기자(김성한기자ㆍ이하 김)가 <고맙습니다>를 택한 이유를 물었다.

“일단은 캐릭터죠. 희망 없는 사람이 희망을 꿈꾸게 되는 캐릭터가 마음에 들었어요. 그리고 내용이 쉽게 접할 수 있는 것이 아니었어요. 에이즈라는 병을 통해 사회에서 완벽하게 소외되고 외로운 사람에 대한 이야기가 끌렸어요. 우리가 부둥켜 안아 줘야 하는 사람들 이야기죠. 작품을 하면서 제가 느낀 건 내가 병자였구나. 마음의 병자, 뭐 이런 느낌이었죠.”

#헐렁한 연기 옷을 입다

장혁은 <고맙습니다>를 통해 연기의 전환점을 맞았다고 털어 놓았다.

맡은 캐릭터의 호구 조사부터 인간 관계까지 면밀하게 분석을 해야 직성이 풀렸던 과거 습관을 털어냈다. 장혁은 연기의 생활론을 펼쳐보였다.

“그전에는 정말 잘해야 겠다는 의욕이 엄청났어요. 이것 저것 챙기면서 잡고 가려고 했죠. 그러면서 집중력은 높았지만 딱 거기까지였어요. 연기가 생활인 것을 몰랐던 거죠. 사람들이 공감을 해야 하는데 생활을 공부할 수는 없잖아요.”

곁에서 지켜보던 매니저가 ‘일본 야구’ 같은 연기라고 거들었다.

“그런 부분에서 어쨌든 군 생활이 결과적으로 많은 도움이 됐겠죠?”(김)

“그렇죠. 군 생활을 통해 연기에도 짜여진 듯한 논리가 아니라 흘러가는 듯 생각하는 감성이 중요하다는 것을 돌아보게 됐어요. 그리고 이전까지는 내가 하고 있는 일에 대해 심각하게 생각해 본 적이 없었어요. 그냥 직업란에 배우라고 쓰는 정도 였죠. 그러다 그걸 못하게 되는 상황이 됐을 때 예전의 자리가 굉장히 크게 다가왔어요. 배고픈데 밥이 보이는 데 먹을 수 없는 그런 심정이랄까요. 그래서 지금 현장에 설 수 있다는 것이 가장 감사해요.”

#난 네가 하나도 신기하지 않아

장혁은 자대 배치 첫날 밤의 웃지 못할 이야기도 공개했다. 세상이 다 알 정도로 떠들썩했던 장혁의 입대 소식을 달갑게 받아들일 부대와 부대원은 없었을 것이다.

장혁의 부대원들은 나이 많은 연예인 출신 이등병을 어떻게 대해야 할까 고민이 빠진 건 당연지사. 이 총대를 맨 것은 장혁보다 나이가 어린 두 달 고참이다.

“그 때 그 친구가 고참들에게 얘기를 많이 들었던 모양이에요. ‘초장’에 잡아야 한다고. 10시에 취침을 하고 새벽 2시에 저를 깨우는 거에요. 그리고선 딱 한마디를 건넸어요. ‘난 네가 하나도 신기하지 않아’라고. 4시간을 고민하다 꺼낸 한마디 였죠. 그 뒤로 그렇게 한 덩이가 됐어요. 제 군 생활은 그 친구 말마따나 신기함을 벗어가는 기간이었죠.”

군 얘기가 나오자 예비역 남 기자의 호응이 사뭇 달라졌다. 주특기를 묻더니 잔을 거푸 꺾는다.

“소위 말하는 ‘일빵빵’이라고 하죠. 일반 보병이었는데 ‘탄작’이라고, 전시에 탄약병에게 탄을 공급하는 역할을 하는 임무였어요. 그래도 훈련소 퇴소할 때 종합 평가로 2위로 차지할 정도로 적응은 잘했어요”라며 장혁도 장난기 어린 말투로 화답한다.

장혁은 한시간을 넘게 무릎까지 빠지는 눈이 쌓인 산길을 걸어 전역한 후에도 특별한 활동 없이 잠행을 거듭했다. 비슷한 시기의 전역한 송승헌 등 다른 전역 스타와 상반된 행보였다.

장혁은 잠행의 이유를 묻자 “할 일이 없었어요”라며 태연한 듯 웃었다. 그 웃음은 군 전역 이후에도 여전히 자신을 바라보는 사회의 따가운 시선을 의식했음을 인정한 것처럼 보였다.

장혁은 최근 자신이 군 생활을 했던 강원도 화천을 다시 찾았다. 군인 신분이 아닌 민간인 장혁으로 첫 여행지를 자신의 과거 ‘위수지역’으로 삼았다. 그의 손에는 <고맙습니다>의 비디오 테이프가 들려있었다.

장혁은 “꼭 다시 와야겠다고는 생각을 줄곧 했어요. 근무를 서면서 바라봤던 하늘을 봤죠. 휴가 나오면 꼭 먹어줘야 했던 냉면 집도 가고요. 이전까지는 전역을 실감하지 못했는데 그제서야 뭔가 해냈다는 생각이 들던걸요”라며 미소를 지었다.

#특권은 없었지만 아쉬움도 없다

나이 서른에 시작한 이등병 생활은 연예인의 특권은 없었다. 그러기에는 주변의 시선이 감시하듯 따라붙었다. 그럼에도 장혁은 한치의 아쉬움의 자리도 남겨두지 않았다.

“한창 인기를 누릴 때 불미스러운 일을 겪은 것에 대한 아쉬움은 전혀 없나요?”(이)

“그 부분은 제 평생에 가장 잘 못한 선택이었어요. 잘못했기 때문에, 속상한 건 없었죠. 사람이 사회를 유지하기 위한 틀과 룰이 있는데 제가 그 부분을 지키지 못했기 때문에 당연히 가야 할 곳을 간 거죠.”

그 때 방송인 김제동이 갑자기 모습을 드러냈다. 김제동과 장혁은 god 100회 공연 뒤풀이에서 마주한 후 5년 만에 재회했다.

두 사람은 당시 입었던 옷차림부터 대화 주제까지 또렷하게 기억해내면서 서로의 기억력을 칭찬하기 바빴다. 두 사람은 바로 어제 술자리를 함께 한 형 동생처럼 기자들을 배제한 채(?) 거푸 술잔을 돌렸다.

두 시간동안 소주 2잔을 비웠던 장혁을 김제동은 5분 만에 똑 같은 잔을 비우도록 만드는 괴력을 발휘하고 자리로 돌아갔다. 김제동은 곧 별별토크에 참여하겠다는 공약도 잊지 않았다.

#또 다른 10년을 시작하며…

장혁은 도우미 김제동의 등장으로 이미 치사량(?)을 넘었다. 한 병은 족히 혼자 비워낸 듯 싶었다. 취기가 거나하게 오르자 가족에 대한 미안함을 이야기 주제로 슬쩍 꺼냈다.

장혁은 불미스러운 일로 부모님께 뒤늦게 군인 아들을 두게 한 마음의 짐을 여전히 지고 있는 듯했다.

“백일 휴가를 나왔을 때였어요. 동생 예비군 복하고 제 이등병 전투복이 나란히 걸려있는데 가슴이 콱 막혔어요. 부모님께 뒤늦게 마음 쓰시게 한다는 걱정이 들었죠.”

장혁은 전역 후 가장 먼저 한 일 중 하나가 부모님 효도 관광이었다. 장혁은 동유럽으로 두 분을 모시고 나서야 군생활 내내 무거웠던 마음을 조금 내려놓았다.

장혁은 이제 갓 데뷔 10년을 넘어섰다. 한번의 어긋난 선택으로 파란만장한 활동 시기를 보냈다. 그리고 팬들에게 보다 의젓하고 성숙한 모습으로 조심스럽게 다가왔다.

앞으로 10년 후의 모습이 궁금해 슬쩍 물었다. 장혁은 언제 어떤 일이 벌어질 지 모르는 일상에서 이런 질문이 부질없다는 것을 안다는 듯 정답을 내놓지 않았다. 다만 진솔함은 잃지 않았다.

“스무살 때 서른까지 많은 계획을 세웠어요. 생각해보니 10년 전에도 비슷한 질문을 받은 것 같아요. 그 때도 그저 배우 계속 했으면 좋겠다는 말을 했던 것 같아요.”
