Kim Min Suk And Members Of “Defendant” Cast Take To The Streets To Fulfill Ratings Promise

Defendant-Kim-Min-Suk.jpg

Imagine if you were lucky enough to see this sight!

On March 21, Kim Min Suk, Oh Dae Hwan, Woo Hyun, and Jo Jae Ryong from “Defendant’ carried out a special ratings promise in honor of their drama’s stellar popularity.

Kim Min Suk previously promised that if “Defendant” received over 25 percent in viewership ratings nationwide, then he would walk the the streets of Seoul for 10 hours dressed in his prison outfit. Just last week, “Defendant” surpassed this milestone with its 15th episode marking 25.6 percent according to Nielson Korea.

While he didn’t actually end up walking 10 hours, understandably, Kim Min Suk did honor his original intent by walking around the Hongdae area of Seoul along with a few of his fellow “prison mates,” all dressed for the part. While it was originally supposed to take place in Gangnam District, it was subsequently changed for safety reasons.

Following the event, the young actor posted a short video on Instagram not only to inform everyone that they wrapped up the event, but also to thank viewers as the March 21 broadcast of “Defendant” was its last episode.

‘Defendant’ stays on top of ratings

“Defendant,” SBS TV’s popular late-night crime thriller, kept a firm grip on a benchmark TV popularity index, as the series prepares to bow out from an explosive 18-episode run, data showed Tuesday.

“Defendant,” starring Ji Sung, scored 269.5 points on the Content Power Index (CPI), staying as the No. 1 TV program during the March 6-March 12 period.

CPI, developed by entertainment company CJ E&M and Nielsen Korea, measures the popularity of TV shows based on the number of views of related news stories, online search tallies and buzz on social media.

In “Defendant,” Ji Sung takes on the role of Park Jung-woo, a former prosecutor who is framed for murdering his family and becomes a death row inmate. He tries to unravel a conspiracy in the face of mounting odds.

Monday night’s penultimate episode featured Park, who’s been reinstated as a prosecutor after clearing his name, finally arresting the show’s antagonist Cha Min-ho, played by Um Ki-joon. The broadcast recorded 27 percent national viewership and 30.7 percent Seoul viewership.

KBS 2TV’s office series “Good Manager” came in second, scoring 239.2 points, followed by the variety comedy show “Happy Together” at third with 232.2 points.

“High School Rapper,” Mnet’s audition program, ranked fourth, and MBC TV’s island castaway series “Missing 9” climbed seven pegs to fifth place. Yonhap

'Defendant' shows there's more to K-dramas than time-slip fantasies

SEOUL, March 22 (Yonhap) -- Those who have followed SBS TV's legal thriller "Defendant" may know by now that it's best to remain vigilant around Cha Min-ho, the show's psychopath antagonist played by Um Ki-joon, until the very last minute.

Thankfully, the show's finale on Tuesday provided a sigh of relief for viewers as it ended on a note of poetic justice and redemption -- even as Cha and his minions desperately tried to pull a last-minute trick but to no avail.

According to Nielsen Korea on Wednesday, Tuesday night's final broadcast recorded a 28.3 percent viewership nationwide. The figure stood at 32.3 percent in Seoul alone.

This composite image captured from SBS TV's "Defendant" shows actor Ji Sung as the show's protagonist Park Jung-woo. (Yonhap)

A follow-up to the hit medical series "Dr. Romantic," "Defendant" had a lot to prove. The show was a gamble in many respects, especially in today's TV landscape oriented heavily toward time-slip fantasies and romantic comedies.

And for a series that is disturbingly dark, and often grizzly and brooding, SBS' bet paid off from the start.

The show made a strong debut on Jan. 23, garnering a 14.5 percent viewership for its premiere. Owing a large part to its plot-focused narrative, albeit a highly unrealistic one, ratings stayed above the 20 percent mark since episode four, prompting the network to order two additional episodes from the strong demand.

Tuesday's finale brought closure to the never-ending game of one-upmanship between good and evil: represented by the protagonist, Prosecutor Park Jung-woo, and Cha Min-ho, the diabolical son of the chairman at the fictional Chamyeong Group.

The series started out with Park chasing Cha, who kills a woman he brings home from a bar. As Park's investigation zeros in on him, Cha murders his twin brother Seon-ho, an executive at Chamyeong, covers it up as though he himself committed suicide and assumes the brother's life.

But with Park unrelenting, Cha seeks revenge by killing Park's wife and framing the prosecutor for the murder.

From early on, the Park on death row doesn't remember what's happened to him. He loses his mind, part of his memory and often blacks out from trauma. Park believes that he is guilty as charged, until he recollects his memory and decides to fight back.

"Defendant" is arguably Ji Sung's best work to date, putting a relatable human face on a tale that is often disturbingly grim and somber. Early mental breakdown moments and other dramatic scenes by Ji never felt forced, putting up a persuasive performance throughout the twist filled plot.

Actor Um Ki-joon, a well-reputed stage and musical actor who's made successful traverses into television, played Cha Min-ho. The character is as complex as is nefarious, as his jealousy over father's disproportionate love toward Seon-ho made him the way he is.

This image captured from SBS TV's "Defendant" shows actor Um Ki-joon as the show's psychopath antagonist Cha Min-ho. (Yonhap)

Cha is as ruthless as TV bad guys come. With Chamyeong's full resource at his disposal, he does anything and everything to make sure that he is always ahead in the game against Park.

Often times, the playing field is so rigged against Park -- to the point of almost breaking the show's suspension of disbelief. But that's also what makes Cha the perfect troll: His conniving moves are tantalizing just enough to prompt Park to go the extra mile and thus making viewers root for him.

As much as the series is focused on Park, half the viewing pleasure is watching Cha navigate within his newfound existential conundrum -- of having to live out his deceased twin brother's life in public. He has to run the family business and engage with his dead brother's mistress, all the while dealing with Park through his henchmen.

Plot-wise, Cha's missteps later catch up to him like a butterfly effect. Director Cho Young-kwang and screenwriter duo Choi Soo-jin and Choi Chang-hwan made sure that even the smallest details, along with multiple sub plots, were there for a reason.

Besides the two leads, the series is also filled with a supporting cast army. Idol star Yuri of Girls' Generation played Park's public defender Seo Eun-hye, actor Oh Chang-seok was cast as Park's old buddy and fellow prosecutor Kang Joon-hyuk, and Park's prison mentor was portrayed by veteran actor Woo Hyun. Park Ha-yeon, the prosecutor's kidnapped daughter, was played by child actress Shin Rin-ah.

The Monday-Tuesday series will be followed by "Whisper," another legal corruption series starring Lee Sang-yoon and Lee Bo-young, who is Ji Sung's wife, next week.

Ji Sung Shares His Music Playlist That Helps Him Act

Actor Ji Sung revealed his playlist of songs that helped him with his recent role in “Defendant.”

Ji Sung’s agency Namoo Actors recently shared behind-the-scenes photos of Ji Sung wearing headphones on the set of his latest drama “Defendant.” They revealed the songs that Ji Sung had often listened to while preparing for emotional scenes.

ji sung

In order to express his character’s despair over being trapped in jail after losing his wife without knowing the whereabouts of his daughter, Ji Sung listened to the OST track “Unspeakable Secret” from one of his previous dramas “Kill Me, Heal Me.” The sad melody of this song helped him convey his sorrowful feelings.

Known to be a fan of jogging, Ji Sung chose to listen to ABBA’s “The Winner Takes It all” whenever he got tired while exercising. He enjoyed listening to this track because it contained memories of his childhood.

Most recently, Ji Sung listened to The Chainsmokers & Coldplay’s “Something Just Like This” on repeat in order to express his character’s desire to become a good father. He chose this track for its lyrics that seem to express a heroic story, signifying his character’s future as a hero.

Ji Sung’s playlist also included “City of Stars” from the film “La La Land” along with the song “Mother to Daughter” by veteran singer Yang Hee Eun. He used the emotional stories from these lyrics in order to focus on his acting.

Meanwhile, the final episode of “Defendant” aired on March 21. Watch it exclusively on Viki!

Last week, Lee Bo Young surprised Ji Sung by visiting the set of SBS’s “Defendant,” and it looks like he’s just as eager to see her work!

On March 22, the crew of SBS’s “Whisper” shared a couple of photos of Ji Sung on the set of the drama, monitoring Lee Bo Young as she acted out her scenes. The photos show Ji Sung smiling at the small monitor that shows how the camera is capturing his wife’s many expressions, as well as concentrating hard to give her great feedback as a fellow actor.

Ji-Sung5.jpg

“Whisper” PD Lee Myung Woo watched the couple on set and made the observation, “Sometimes, Ji Sung will be monitoring Lee Bo Young when the team of ‘Defendant’ comes and tells him he has to go and film his own drama. Lee Bo Young also visits the set of his drama quite often.”

Ji Sung is said to have even approached the “Whisper” cameramen and jokingly said, “I’m holding you responsible if Lee Bo Young doesn’t look great on camera.”

Approaching three years since the tragic 'Sewol Ferry' accident back in April 2014, numerous celebrities paid tribute to the victims by posting photos of a 'Miraculous Sewol Cloud'.  The cloud is in the same shape of the yellow ribbons that were used as a symbol of hope after the tragedy.

On March 23, the South Korean government finally raised the Sewol ferry from the ocean and a 'Miraculous Sewol Cloud' appeared in the sky shortly afterward.

'Defendant' closes with warning for crooked real world

111(22).jpg

By Park Jin-hai

There was no surprise ending for SBS's hit drama "Defendant," which has driven viewers for the past two months with its thrilling cat-and-mouse case.

The legal thriller, starring veteran actors Ji Sung and Um Ki-joon ended Tuesday with a mostly expected finale _ justice prevailed and the bad guy got punished.

Cha Min-ho, Cha Myung Group's evil vice-chairman played by Um, who killed his twin brother to assume his identity, was sentenced to death, despite trying to get off by bribing a judge and pretending to be insane.

Ji's character prosecutor Park Jung-woo, framed by Cha for the death of his wife, visited his wife's charnel house with his daughter and promised to make the world that his daughter would be living in more beautiful.

Park, entering another crooked conglomerate, said to his colleagues, "We only have to catch those people whom our bosses say to leave alone."

The 18-part drama has had its share of criticisms that it repeats the same pattern of twists and turns to keep viewers hooked. Yet "Dependant" without a so-called tacit success formula of star writers, hallyu stars and romance enjoyed great popularity. Its Tuesday finale garnered the highest 28.3 percent, surpassing the previous record of 27.6 percent that "Romantic Doctor, Teacher Kim" posted this year.

The comeuppance has been an easy guess, but after the long wait it gave as much relief and satisfaction to viewers. The drama, in a form of a fiction, was like a warning sign to the evil and powerful figures of the real world.

Cha, who pretends to be mentally unstable in court, comes near Park and whispers "Have you seen anything that cannot be done with money and power in Korea?" When he is jailed, he is boss of his prison cell.

His remark outraged viewers and when he finally ended up in solitary confinement, wearing prison garb bearing the number "1001" _ the same number as the real-world interrogation room where former President Park Geun-hye was investigated for her involvement in a corruption scandal _ viewers got their vicarious satisfaction.

Also, what made "Dependant" so special had been the acting performances of Ji and Um, who played against each other neck-and-neck.

Ji, who won the Grand Prize at the MBC Drama Awards for playing a person with dissociative identity disorder in the 2015 romantic thriller "Kill Me, Heal Me," proved himself once again. He was acclaimed for playing the diverse emotions of the character, who suddenly wakes up one day and finds himself a convict on death row for killing his wife and daughter. Ji portrayed the inner struggle of Park to recover his lost four-month memory and find the truth. Scenes showing his love for his daughter touched the hearts of many viewers.

Um, who played the ultimate villain, stood opposite Ji, representing Korean society's corruption and the collusive ties between politics and business. Cast in a dual role as Cha Min-ho and his twin brother Sun-ho, Um gave viewers chills in every episode and impressed viewers as strongly as Ji.

'Defendant' Breaks Ratings Record With Finale Ratings Of 28.3 Percent

ji-sung-defendant.jpg

Defendant broke the records set by Legend of the Blue Sea and Goblin early in the year when it breached 25 percent ratings in its second to the last week. It again repeated the feat when it reached closely 30 percent ratings in its final week.

Based on ratings released by AGB Nielsen Korea, Defendant's national ratings score for its 15th episode reached 25.6 percent and ranked even higher in the Seoul National Capital Area. TNmS Media Korea, in its survey rated the 16th episode slightly lower at 21.3 percent on the national rankings and 24.6 in the Seoul National Capital Area.

The ratings for the penultimate week seemed like the show was on track to hit an unprecedented 30 percent ratings. While it missed the 30 percent mark, Defendants ended strong with a national ratings 28.3 percent, reported Soompi.

Defendant, which topbills Ji Sung, started off strong in the ratings when it premiered on January 23 with 14.5 percent. It steadily increased in the following weeks as more people got hooked to the drama. By its seventh episode, it already averaged 20 percent in the ratings, which is already the peak of hit dramas "Legend of the Blue Sea" and "Goblin."

Defendant revolves around Park Jung Woo, a prosecutor who finds himself in the death row after he was accused of killing his family. Unfortunately, he is suffering from amnesia, rendering him incapable of defending himself in court. As the weeks unfolded, so did conspiracies and plots that further thickened the plot and made the drama even more gripping.

Like Defendant, Ji Sung's previous drama "Kill Me, Heal Me," was also widely praised by critics and even earned the actor coveted Korean Producers Award for Best Performance. However, it averaged around 10 percent and was nowhere near the average ratings of Defendant.

During the interview, Ji Sung displayed his passion for baseball. “When I was younger, my dream was to become a baseball player. This is a dream come true for me,” he commented about his experience on the mound.

Later on, a reporter covering the story unveiled that during his middle school days, Ji Sung was throwing at a speed of 130 kilometers (approximately 80 miles) per hour. The actor even got scouted to pursue the sport full-time, but chose not to after his parents disapproved.
