SEOUL, Nov. 24 (Yonhap) -- Cannes-winning director Park Chan-wook and late iconic movie star Kang Soo-youn will be awarded the second-highest national cultural merit for their contributions to the development of Korean pop culture, the government said Thursday.

Park and Kang were chosen as the recipients of the Eungwan Order of Cultural Merit, the second-highest class of the South Korean cultural decoration, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said.

The 59-year-old filmmaker won best director at the 75th Cannes Film Festival in May for his romance thriller "Decision to Leave." It was his third Cannes award following the Grand Prix for "Oldboy" (2003) and the Jury Prize for "Thirst" (2009).

Born in 1966 in Seoul, Kang debuted as a child actor at age 3 and went on to become the first Asian actor to win the best actress award at the Venice International Film Festival in 1987 for her role in "The Surrogate Womb." Kang also won the best actress award at the 16th Moscow International Film Festival two years later for her role in the Buddhist-themed movie "Come, Come, Come Upward." She died of a cerebral hemorrhage at age 55 in May this year.

Actor Song Kang-ho is one of the three winners of the Bogwan Order of Cultural Merit, the third-highest medal, according to the ministry.  Song took home the country's first best actor prize at this year's Cannes for his role in "Broker," the first Korean-language film by Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda.

The honors will be given during the 2022 Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards ceremony to be held at the National Theater of Korea in the evening, according to the ministry. (END)

Auteur Park Chan-wook, late actress Kang Soo-youn win 2nd-highest order of cultural merit

Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards honors 28 cultural icons

By Dong Sun-hwa | 2022-11-25

Cannes-winning filmmaker Park Chan-wook and late actress Kang Soo-youn won the Eungwan Order of Cultural Merit ― the second-highest national order of cultural merit ― at the 2022 Korea Popular Culture and Arts Awards, Thursday. Nobody received the highest order of cultural merit this year.

Hosted and organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in cooperation with Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA), the awards ceremony took place at the Haeoreum Grand Theater of the National Theater of Korea (NTOK) in central Seoul. It intends to honor those who have played a pivotal role in facilitating the growth of the nation's culture and arts industry.

Park, who won best director at the 75th Cannes Film Festival in May with his romance thriller, "Decision to Leave," said he would continue to delve deeper into the themes of human beings and the world.

"Since my films often do not depict our country and people as beautiful and respectful entities, I am not sure if I deserve this prize," the "Oldboy" (2003) director said in his video acceptance speech. "But I believe it is an artist's duty to portray human beings and society as they are. I think this award has recognized my efforts to do so. Thus, I will continue to thoroughly explore our world and people."

Kang Soo-kyung, the younger sister of Kang Soo-youn, who died of a cerebral hemorrhage at age 55 in May, accepted the award on behalf of her sister.

"As I came here, I recalled the day when my older sister clinched the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit ― the fourth-highest of its kind ― in 1987," she said. "I wonder what it would have been like if she had been here today. This year marks the 53rd anniversary of her debut. I hope she remembers that a lot of people have recognized her hard work over such a long time."

Kang, who debuted as a child actress at age 3, became the first Asian actor to notch the best actress award at the Venice International Film Festival in 1987 with the movie, "The Surrogate Womb." Some of her major hits include, "Come, Come, Come Upward" (1989) and "The Road to Race Track" (1991).

The Bogwan or the third-highest honor, went to "Broker" (2022) actor Song Kang-ho, among others. K-pop boy band Tomorrow X Together (TXT) and girl group aespa got the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Commendations. The former dropped its fourth EP, "minisode 2: Thursday's Child," in May, which stayed on Billboard's main albums chart for 14 consecutive weeks.

"This prize will lead TXT to work harder as one of the leading K-pop acts," Shin Young-jae, president of the group's agency Big Hit Music, said. "Big Hit Music will also give the members our unwavering support and strive to come up with quality content."

Park Chan Wook’s “Decision to Leave” became the main character of this year’s Blue Dragon Film Awards by taking home the most awards.

At the 43rd Blue Dragon Film Awards, which was held at KBS Hall in Yeouido, Seoul on the evening of November 25th, the movie “Decision to Leave”, which was nominated in 13 categories, won a total of 6 trophies for Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Screenplay, and Best Music. Director Park Chan Wook couldn’t attend the award ceremony due to the filming schedule of his new film in Los Angeles.

Announced as the winner of Best Actor, Park Hae Il said, “First of all, I would like to thank director Park Chan Wook for allowing me to play the role of detective Jang Hae Jun. I’m also grateful to screenwriter Jeong Seo Kyeong for her attractive stories and lines. I wanted to share this honor with Tang Wei, who made Hae Joon unable to leave the coast. I’m glad I was able to work with Lee Jung Hyun on this work. And I also want to thank Go Kyung Pyo and Kim Shin Young for giving me wonderful experiences by forming a team with me”.

He added, “I would also like to thank all the staff and CJ ENM production team for making our actors look deeper. The actors and staff of director Kim Han Min’s film ‘Hansan: Rising Dragon’ also worked very hard, and I want to deliver my gratitude to them. I’ve had such a happy year. Someday, I will repay the love of the audiences who made this year so meaningful to me. Please look forward to my future performances”. This award marks Park Hae Il’s second time winning Best Actor at the Blue Dragon Film Awards.

Tang Wei, who was honored with Best Actress, took the stage and delivered her acceptance speech. As the first foreigner to win Best Actress at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, she said, “I want to thank Jeong Seo Kyeong for writing this amazing script. And I’d like to express my grateful heart to all the people who completed this scenario and helped me finish the filming. Also, I would like to thank the audience for watching the movie”, adding “Actors spend all their lives waiting for just a good scenario or character. Some people wait months and decades. I think I’m very lucky to meet the person named Song Seo Rae in this work.”

Director Park Chan Wook received Best Director at this year’s Blue Dragon Film Awards. Receiving the trophy on behalf of Park Chan Wook, Kim Shin Young said, “Fighting prejudice is a difficult and scary thing in life. I want to thank director Park Chan Wook for breaking prejudice before me and facing people’s prejudices like a shield. This is what he asked me to say for his acceptance speech.”

Kim Shin Young continued, “I’m sad that he can’t stand here because he’s filming in the U.S. One of the good things about being a film director is that you have many opportunities to meet talented people in various fields. A book celebrating Park Chan-wook’s 30th anniversary as a film director is currently in production, crowdfunding platform Tumblbug said Friday.

Titled “Finally, Park Chan-wook” (translated), the book met its target of 65 million won ($49,000) on the crowdfunding website and will finish publication next month.

As of Friday, more than 1,960 patrons collectively donated around 230 million won, 350 percent more than the original goal.

The book will be 600 pages long and includes behind-the-scenes stories about every single short and feature film Park has produced, directed or written for. It features an interview with American director Quentin Tarantino and behind-the-scenes stories from when Park received the best director award at this year’s Cannes for “Decision to Leave” (2022).

Actors who have starred in Park’s films, like Park Hae-il and Tang Wei from “Decision to Leave” and Lee Young-ae from “Lady Vengeance” (2005), also took part in creating the book.

Ten figurines of Park’s movie characters like Hideko and Sook-hee from “The Handmaiden” (2016) and Seo-rae and Hae-jun from “Decision to Leave,” as well as dioramas of the settings in 10 of his films, will also be sold in limited quantity.

Funding continues through Sunday on Tumblbug.

‘Decision to Leave’ wins 6 awards at Blue Dragon Film Awards, including best film

Actor Lee Jung-jae wins best new director for his directorial debut 'Hunt'

By Hwang Dong-hee (hwangdh@heraldcorp.com) | Nov 27, 2022

Filmmaker Park Chan-wook’s Cannes-winning romance-thriller “Decision to Leave” swept major categories at this year’s Blue Dragon Film Awards, one of the most prestigious film events here.

The film, nominated in 12 categories, took six trophies including best film, best director, best actor and best actress awards during the 43rd edition of the ceremony held at KBS Hall in Seoul, on Friday night.

The film revolves around a detective, played by Park Hae-il, who investigates a murder case where he suspects a mysterious widow, played by Tang Wei.

Director Park clinched best director for the film at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. The film has been selected as the country's entry for best international feature film for the 95th Academy Awards to be held next March.

“One good thing about being a director is that you have many opportunities to meet talented people in different fields,” Park said in his acceptance speech delivered by actor-comedian Kim Shin-young, who received the award on Park's behalf.

Park was unable to attend the ceremony as he is filming abroad. Kim starred in the film as a detective.

This marks Park’s third time winning the best director award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards, following “Joint Security Area” (2000) and “Oldboy” (2003).

Actor Park Hae-il was named best actor while Tang Wei nabbed best actress for their roles in the Cannes-winning film.

“I would like to share this joy with Tang Wei, who perfectly portrayed the role of Seo-rae. She made Hae-jun unable to get out of the beach forever,” said Park after expressing gratitude to director Park and screenwriter Jeong Seo-kyung.

Tang, speaking briefly in Korean before switching to English and Chinese, said, “Actors wait for that one good script and one character for months, years and even decades. I am very lucky to have met this character, Seo-rae."

Meanwhile, the best supporting actor and actress awards went to Byun Yo-han for “Hansan: Rising Dragon” and Oh Na-ra for “Perhaps Love.”

Kim Dong-hwi of the film “In Our Prime” and Kim Hye-yoon of “The Girl on a Bulldozer” were named best new actor and actress, respectively.

The best new director award went to actor Lee Jung-jae for his directorial debut “Hunt,” which also grabbed two other awards -- best editing and best cinematography and lighting.

The Emmy-winning star of "Squid Game" was absent from the ceremony due to a scheduling conflict. Actor Jung Woo-sung who starred in the film accepted the award on Lee's behalf.

“'Hunt' was a meaningful film for me. And it was more meaningful to meet the audience during stage greetings. Thank you everyone who loved the film,” Lee said over the phone from the UK.

'Decision to Leave' makes the New York Times list of best movies of 2022

Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave” made it on the New York Times’s Best Movies of 2022 list.

New York Times film critic Manohla Dargis on Wednesday introduced 10 films that impressed her this year, and Park’s Cannes-winning film “Decision to Leave” ranked eighth.

She compared the film to Alfred Hitchcok’s “Vertigo,” saying it’s a “delirious riff on Hitchcok’s “aching 1958 drama about a male detective’s obsession with a mystery woman.”

“Once again, there is a man and a woman as well as love and betrayal. Yet as ‘Decision to Leave’ unfolds and settles into its own distinctively kinked groove, the movie’s emotional focus progressively shifts from the obsessed lover to the object of his relentless, uncomprehending gaze, and Park’s clever homage turns into a poignant rejoinder,” she writes.

She picked “EO” by Jerzy Skolimowski first, followed by “Petite Maman” by Céline Sciamma in second.

“Decision to Leave” follows police detective Hae-jun, portrayed by Park Hae-il, who begins to fall for a suspect: a Chinese widow named Seo-rae, portrayed by Tang Wei. The pair meet after Hae-jun begins to investigate a mysterious death of a man — Seo-rae’s husband — who was found dead after falling from a mountain. Riding a fine line between investigative drama and romance, the film earned director Park the best director award at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

The DFCA voting body consists of a diverse range of highly established film critics, awards pundits, and influential voices from around the globe. The nominations for the 2023 DiscussingFilm Critic Awards are finally here thanks to this dedicated voting group, which now includes bold voices from right here at DiscussingFilm and major outlets such as The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, The Wrap, and much more. Follow along in the official nomination announcements of what is now our fourth annual edition of the ceremony.

The top winners of our 3rd Annual DiscussingFilm Critic Awards were led by Jane Campion’s The Power of the Dog, Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, Pablo Larraín’s Spencer, and Julia Ducournau’s Titane. Now, Everything Everywhere All at Once dominated the nominations for the 4th Annual DiscussingFilm Critic Awards with a total tally of 14, including Best Picture, Best Director for the Daniels, Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, and Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan. Coming in second is a tie between Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis and Park Chan-wook’s Decision to Leave with 7 nominations each. Blockbuster hits from 2022 such as The Batman and Nope received widespread recognition across multiple categories, even including Best Picture for Top Gun: Maverick.

This year, the DFCA included 10 feature films in both the Best Picture and Best International Feature categories to further highlight the reach of this season’s range of influential stores from around the world. This decision led to the Tollywood hit RRR, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Alejandro González Iñárritu’s Bardo earning a place in the nominations among other powerful features. The DFCA also introduced a new category this awards season with Best Horror Film, which saw both Ti West’s X and Pearl along with the cult hit Barbarian get recognized.

Other standout nominations for the 2023 DiscussingFilm Critic Awards include Park Hae-il for Best Actor in Decision to Leave, Mia Goth for Best Actress in Pearl, Dolly De Leon for Best Supporting Actress in Triangle of Sadness, and the cast Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery for Best Ensemble. Additionally, two animated films this year broke out in categories outside of Best Animated Feature, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio in Best Picture and Pixar’s Turning Red in Best Debut Feature for filmmaker Domee Shi. Of course, we can’t go on without mentioning the love for industry veterans Mark Rylance, Cate Blanchett, and Brendan Fraser. Check out the full nominations for the 2023 DiscussingFilm Critic Awards below.

58th Daejong Film Awards

Despite efforts to renew itself, ceremony remains lackluster, chaotic

By Kim Da-sol (ddd@heraldcorp.com) | Dec 9, 2022

In an attempt to bring it back to its former glory, the 58th Daejong Film Awards was held Friday in Seoul in a smaller scale with only a few actors in attendance.

Film director Park Chan-wook’s Cannes-winning romance-thriller “Decision to Leave” won the most coveted best picture and scenario award at this year’s Daejong Film Awards, also known as the Grand Bell Awards.

Park, who is currently working on his next project abroad, delivered his acceptance speech via a voice recording, and extended his appreciation to his team and actors Park Hae-il and Tang Wei who played Hae-jun and Seo-rae.

Park Hae-il also won the best actor award with “Decision to Leave.”

“Personally as an actor, the biggest motivation (for a film) was curiosity. I will continue to move forward without losing curiosity, even though I may fail,” Park said as he accepted the award.

The best female actor award went to Yeom Jung-ah of the musical film “Life is Beautiful.”

Once regarded as the country’s top awards in cinema, the Daejong Film Awards has struggled to recover from a bout of controversies, such as unfair selection of winners and poor event organization.

For a complete overhaul, the awards organizer this year sought to start afresh, inviting YouTube creators and TikTok stars to the event as presenters, but the majority of the public saw their attendance as irrelevant.

Fandom enables some movies to stay longer in theaters

'No film is a failure if it has fans'

By Kwak Yeon-soo | 2022-12-15

Since the pandemic outbreak, viewers have shifted to streaming services to watch movies and fewer people are going to theaters than before. Against this backdrop, a movie's opening week at the box office has become a stronger predictor of a film's overall commercial success than it used to be, as moviegoers ― both frequent and infrequent ― are influenced by word of mouth generated by social media and reviews when they decide whether to go to a theater or wait until the film becomes available on streaming services.

So if word of mouth online and critical ratings during a film's first week are mostly negative, the number of moviegoers tends to decrease thereafter, and the screening period is ultimately shortened.

However, movies with a strong fan base are likely to stay longer in theaters thanks to repeated viewings.

Despite its wins at major awards including Cannes Film Festival, "Decision to Leave" had lower-than-expected opening ratings. However, it experienced a resurgence of interest as one of the most talked-about films this year, prolonging its stay in theaters and recouping production and marketing costs.

"After a certain amount of time, 'Decision to Leave' fans started sharing the film's iconic quotes on social media, which developed into a series of memes and created a collective buzz. Avid fans also watched the film more than once, expanding its theatrical run," a CJ ENM official said.

The fandom culture in Korea's film industry is nothing new. However, unlike in previous years when fans independently rented out theaters for group screenings and shared their reviews of certain films, studios and distributors have begun to mobilize fans and organize limited-engagement screenings ahead of the opening.

Period thriller "The Night Owl," which has taken the top spot at the box office for three consecutive weeks, launched a fandom name event in November. The musical film "Hero," which is coming to theaters next week, also gave its fan base ― from the decade-old stage musical of the same title ― the nickname of "dongji," which means "comrade" in English.

Film critic Yoon Sung-eun said film industry officials are turning to supporters to exert their power as fans and share their thoughts about films with a wider audience.

"Ticket prices have increased after the start of the pandemic, and moviegoers seem to have gotten more selective. They want to respect their time, money and effort when going to the cinema, so they refer to other people's reviews and critic scores," she said.

"Nowadays, moviegoers look for films that they can empathize with. That is why musical genre films with singalong screenings attract a large group of fans. Some fans re-watch a film in many formats, like IMAX, 4D and Dolby Cinema, while others re-watch it to discover hidden meanings," Yoon said.

But film market researcher Kim Hyung-ho pointed out that fandom in the film industry is overrated, although he agrees that it is one of the factors that can be evaluated to determine whether a film can stay longer at the box office and generate financial returns.

"In my opinion, fandom only comprises 3-6 percent of total ticket sales. However, fans cannot be taken lightly because word of mouth can be powerful, especially if it is negative. A film that is branded a flop can be fatal to everyone involved," he said.

In August, film distributor Showbox requested a police investigation following rumors that there was a marketing company intentionally leaving negative reviews about its aviation disaster action film, "Emergency Declaration."

The film, which cost more than 26 billion won ($20 million) to produce, has been one of the most anticipated films this year due to its star-studded cast consisting of Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-hun and Jeon Do-yeon. However, it reached only 2 million in ticket sales, which is far below the break-even point of 5 million.

Film distributors agreed that fans help their movies get attention and affect many others to want to see them.

"Their impact on the box office results is not significant, but regardless of that, we are thankful for fans who appreciate our movies, share their reviews on social media and engage with director and actors," the CJ ENM official said.

"Although a film itself may have received less than favorable reviews, the character or a genre could be among the few highlights that fans appreciate. Thus, it is hard to predict what fans look for or appreciate in the films in particular. That is out of our scope," he added.

Comedian Kim Shin-young named Best Supporting Actress at KFPA Awards

Comedian Kim Shin-young has won the Best Supporting Actress Award for her performance in director Park Chan-wook's "Decision to Leave" at the ninth Korean Film Producers Association (KFPA) Awards held in Seoul, Wednesday.

Her very first film appearance, playing the role of a detective alongside Park Hae-il in "Decision to Leave," earned her the trophy, with the film itself also winning Best Picture and Best Screenplay. The film tells the story of a detective (Park) who suspects a mysterious Chinese widow is the culprit of a murder case and later falls in love with her.

"Thank you for the honorary award. I also want to thank our wonderful 'Decision to Leave' team and the audience who watched and supported our film," Kim wrote on Instagram, Wednesday.

Earlier in May, director Park praised Kim's acting in an interview, saying that he thinks Kim is a born genius. Kim was also nominated for the Best New Female Actor award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards but fell short to Kim Hye-yoon, who snatched the prize for her role in "The Girl on a Bulldozer."

The year 2022 was memorable for Kim. In October, She was named the new host of Korea's beloved weekly singing show, "National Singing Contest," on KBS, succeeding the late veteran emcee, Song Hae.

Debuting as a comedian in 2003, Kim, 39, has appeared in numerous comedy and entertainment shows. She has hosted MBC's radio program, "Noon Song of Hope," every day since 2012 and formed K-pop girl group Celeb Five, comprised of four veteran comedians ― Kim, Song Eun-yi, Ahn Young-mi and Shin Bong-sun.

At the KFPA Awards, actor Lee Jung-jae was named Best Director for his directorial debut feature, "Hunt," an action-packed film that centers on two rival intelligence agents who are tasked with uncovering a North Korean spy. The film also won Best Production Design, Best Film Editing and Best Cinematography.

Best Actor and Actress awards went to Ma Dong-seok of "The Roundup" and Tang Wei of "Decision to Leave," respectively, the association said.

Park Chan-wook’s “Decision to Leave” was selected as the ninth best movie this year by The Guardian.

The British daily newspaper announced Thursday a list of the top 50 movies that have been released in theaters in the United States.

The article describes “Decision to Leave” as a “sensational black-widow noir” and notes lead actor Tang Wei to be “superbly charismatic, bringing a live-wire energy and chemistry to her relationship with her leading man [actor Park Hae-il].”

The film is also described as “Hitchcockian” with “showstopping emotional confrontations” and “manipulative” plot twists.

Hirokazu Kore-eda’s film “Broker” was No. 49 on the list. It features a star-studded lineup of actors like Song Kang-ho, Kang Dong-won and IU.

"Decision to Leave” follows police detective Hae-jun, portrayed by Park Hae-il, who begins to fall for a suspect: a Chinese widow named Seo-rae, portrayed by Tang Wei. The pair meet after Hae-jun begins to investigate the mysterious death of a man — Seo-rae’s husband — who was found dead after falling from a mountain.
