Thoughts on Episode 13

A good deal of this episode continues to focus on the growth of Eun-soo’s and Young’s relationship. Almost from the beginning they have been doing things for each other. Initially that was Young protecting her so he could return her to her world, and later she began protecting him as well, ironically by trying to avoid a relationship with him. She even ran away in part to protect him. Now they are caring for each other more directly. I thought his knife gift was very practical for the world she’s now living in. He even replaces it with a better one for her and teaches her how to use it. He becomes aroused when he embraces her from behind while they’re practicing knife fighting, and his throat clearings around her are very sweet. He escorts her in the market, smiling as she tells him of her money-making plans. He even kidnaps and courteously threatens Duck Hindass so she can read her journal. For her part, Eun-soo has now openly engaged with Young, saving his life in the previous episode and now continuing to care for his wounds. She has partnered with him to support each other and share information, although she occasionally fails to share, still concerned that he’ll put himself at risk.

One of my favorite parts in this episode that illustrates their relationship is after Young has defeated the Chisal. He’s in pain and exhausted but still keeps his word to meet with Eun-soo. He’s also irritable and takes it out on his men who are dallying with Eun-soo’s new products. But Eun-soo ignores all that and quickly takes him in hand, stitching up his wound after threatening to get a command from the Queen to make him let her tend to him. He puts up token resistance but gives in quickly, accepting her brisk but loving care of him. The General has clearly met his match in terms of will!

I also enjoyed watching Young and the King’s relationship. After killing the assassins he changes clothes before reporting to the King, who has been very worried about him. The King tells him he doesn’t need to trouble himself with such formalities as changing clothes before coming to him. And when the King is depressed after the court session, it’s Young who ignores his instructions to be left alone and goes to him. That scene is very bittersweet, as the king asks whether he or the High Doctor comes first for Young, and Young sidesteps the question, replying, “Does the order matter?” I felt for the King, caught between ensuring the loyalty of a precious asset and friend, and Ki Chul & Co.’s serious threat to his crown.

There’s an incredibly tender moment between the King and Queen, as they finally heal their relationship. He dries her tears and takes her hand in his after confessing that she’s in his heart to stay. I’m sure the King didn’t go back to his own quarters that night!

Lastly, Young is accused of taking a bribe. It’s just about the worst thing that anyone could do to him, since he has a staunch disregard of money and material things. Yet that’s exactly the charge. And it’s for a puny amount, another slap in the face, as if he could be so easily bribed. And two of his men have also been trapped in the setup, which causes Young as much anxiety as the accusation against him. He thinks he’s been set up by Ki Chul, but that question will be answered in the next episode.

Sorry to cut your post.

OMG !... how could I missed this scene.

A  depressed King facing the empty throne, caught in a crisis where both his hands are being tied

to a difficult situations; a warrior cum friend whom he has full trust and shaky throne !

Glad to see some progress in the King & Queen relationship and the entire scene with the drinks

just had me squealing with delight.  It's good to see them being more truthfull to each other.

Episode 13

When CY brings in the future officials to court to pretty stirring  music.

It’s funny, ES wants to do happy hour with CY.  ES is back to her cheery self, making toothpaste and CY was a bit grumpy.

The mambo twins are being busy bodies wanting to see the heavenly doctor.  And amazed that CY is actually smiling. That did not last long when he found that Imja kept a secret from him about Prince Deok Heong. She knows him so well and retorted that he would feel bad and want to do something rash again. She is exactly right.

Sweet scene when king finally told his queen that he loved her.  They were both excellent. Has anyone seen the actress in other dramas? I have not seen her since Faith. Just noticed that the queen wore the gift he got for her when they had a meeting with the officials.

Its hilarious that firelady thinks CY came to see her and CY is teasing  her and her pledged brother.

As ES guessed when CY learns about what Prince DH is trying to do, he will take action. CY wants him to help ES. CY is underestimating the prince and will regret it. Poor CY trying all ways to help ES return to where she came from.  Even if he loses her, it will give him piece of mind. Keeping his promise is the most important thing to him.

ES is a hoot thinking of making money and doing a pyramid business. It is so adorable when CY teaches ES to use the knife that he especially bought for her so that it would be less heavy and cumbersome. He notices and remembers everything about her. He keeps clearing his throat when he gets uncomfortable. He is so serious trying to teach her to use her knife and she thinks he is adorably funny and she finally gets him to laugh and be less serious. He wanted to find out too if she still wants to go back and there is nothing there worth staying for. He is testing the waters? CY really smiles and laughs more readily.  You see a change in our morose general. So sweet.  The blooming relationship between the both of them is just so new to CY.  I think his relationship with May Hee was completely different.

When the soldiers search CY’s room, there is this symbolic scene of May Hee’s scarf discarded on the floor and the aspirin container rolling with aspirin and the dried flower in focus.  Liked that touch.

At the end of the episode, CY gave the same look that he did when he kneeled before Ki Chul and surrendered after ES refused to look at him, the bitter and cynical sigh signifying that he is being cornered and framed again. Poor CY.

@Thong Thin @msdot Love your recap.  You both pinpointed  the most endearing and interesting parts of the episode and described it in a most descriptive way.  It must have taken sometime. I feel those too but takes me too long to describe them in detail the way you do. :D

Anyway, every time I read all your observations about CY, I just cannot understand how Drama Beans when they were still managed by Girl Friday and I forgot the other person's name could criticize LMH's acting in Faith. Saying he was wooden, did not have the gravitas to be a warrior, not tough enough, inadequate expressions.  His nuanced acting, with no over acting or theatrics so common in Kdramas, shows the slow evolving uncaring, expressionless warrior change to an gentle but fiercely protective lover.  A slow boiling romance that ends in one of the best love stories ever.  LMH played CY to perfection.

Was on Epi 14 tonight!   The way Daejang looks at ES, and trying to touch her.   Finally, this scene that really brought relief to me.   ES is so honest with her feelings, she just could not hide and opens up to him ..... sigh, am waiting for him to do the same (I guess she knows).   So looking forward to hear your recaps, chingus.

It is interesting, CY always protects. Now he is protecting his men. The officials gave him a chance to blame it on his men but he asked them what they knew, they said that they did not see the contents so he ordered them to leave. He shoulders everything. He is not going to beg, to explain. His word was he did not take the bribe.” Do what you will, I have said all I need to say”. It is so CY and awesome. The king knew CY was being framed and he is just sick of it but unable to do anything without seeming to show favoritism. Did Ki Chul do this?  Or was it loud-mouth? Ki Chul however found CY’s weakness which was his men???  Or his penchant to protect?  I am not sure what Ki Chul saw actually. So upset at his men and he gave an hard kick at the decorative piece. I liked that.

I just loved the steely look CY gave to loud-mouth, suddenly realizing that the person that framed him was not Ki-Chul but him.

When ES came to remove his gauze, he was stealing a glance at her and then stared so intensely but turned away guiltily and swallowed when she looked up. So cute.  This is my favorite part, when she showed him the pill bottle and he grabbed it from her embarrassed. Ha! Ha!  He had been caught being sentimental. He then gives a strange look, mulish? (I don’t get that expression).  Angry that he has been caught at being sentimental? Then she talked about him being famous and that there is a song about him about gold and stones. That surprised him that they knew about his father’s advice to him.  I thought that scene was so perfect. His utter shock at her telling him about his future fame.

At the hearing, he just admitted to taking a bribe and poor king was wondering what he was up to. I found that whole court hearing very stirring.

I think this is one of my favorite episodes. It is stirring, funny and romantic. When he came for ES and she ran and give him a real hug.  The shock in his face at first. It was so unexpected and then he starts patting her on her back finally acknowledging to her that he cares about her.  I also love her utter certainty that he would meet her regardless of being locked up or not.  She knows him now.

Then when she offered to give herself up to save him and said that she liked Ki Chul’s hospitality, the look on his face is priceless. When she said chin up, it is a joke. He retorted that it wasn’t funny.  The humorless warrior.

Then the scene of eating the rice soup.  I could not help cracking up when he just snatched her bowl of soup and ate it all up and the hungry look on her face and then after accusing him of eating all of her soup, the look of consternation on his face was comical.  He can be funny without being funny. Another fav scene, where she is messing her hair trying to figure out the calculations and CY looks at her, her hair, he is bemused or at awe with her reactions and wonders in people in her era were all that way.  He is very attracted to her hair and troubled by her messy hair.

The last scene, when they get into close proximity with each other, the atmosphere and their gaze is electrifying and ES gets uncomfortable and moves away . Then the truth and dare game when he admitted that he will not be okay when she leaves and his tracing her silhouette is the most romantic thing ever. So sad, so sweet, she seems so unattainable to him, the longing, the tenderness all felt in that one act. One of the best scenes. Who could imagine tracing a silhouette can be so endearing and melancholic?

End of the episode, he realizes with horror that something is wrong with ES. From calling her high doctor, he switches to Imja in a panic when she does not respond and the look of horror on his face is daebak. Great episode!

Episode 14 -  Part I

Choi Young growl at the accusations flung at him, and says that they can pass out whatever judgement they want. The fact that he's been accused of the one thing he never even imagined has clearly gotten to him, and he warns Woodalchi to stay away from him, breaking some furniture half in anger, frustration and half in warning……here comes Wrath of Daejang !

CY comes to his room, only to find it in a mess and he picks up Mae-hee’s bandana and puts it back in the box as a sign that he's finally ready to let her go.

(Remember  before he met ES, CY carried his sword like it was an extension of his own body , and by keeping MH's bandana on the sword hilt it's equivalent to wearing it himself. If you think of the sword as part of CY's right arm, you could even see it as CY's method of maintaining his connection to MH by tying himself to the last shred of her that remained with him.
When you put something in a box or in a drawer, it signifies that it is something that you might value, but that you may only revisit every so often
or not at all.)

While Daejang was sulking (Adam apple alert !) , ES tells him that she may have uncovered the dates on which the portal to heaven opens, and he sits up immediately. As ES takes out his stitches, he can’t stop staring at her....and when ES looks up he has a  quick turn of the head, gulping and throat clearing.

Until she mentions that she went to his room and found the asiprin bottle…he just looks at her with the most incredulous expression and snatches away the bottle like it's the most precious thing in the world that no one else can touch.

(On the other hand, carrying ES's aspirin bottle in his clothing suggests that he couldn't bear to leave it behind. We saw from the prison scene early on that he takes it out to look at it when he's distressed, because he connects it with all his fond memories of ES's smiling face, and we know even towards the end that he continues to keep it on him all the time. In symbolizing ES, I think that bottle with the flower gives him strength, just as the actual presence of ES does.)

She teases him and he just makes that face, unable to say anything.

We also witnessed ES's affection for the Queen when she informed JB to prepare more tonic for her uterus. Clearly, she was privy to the cause of the Queen's demise and wanted to do her best to prevent her from suffering again and gave her a comforting hug instead, as if hoping it would take all her problems away. It's also with a heavy heart when ES hugged her as a sign of bidding goodbye. The Queen seemed taken aback by the hug.

Motormouth pushes his luck too far, insulting CY, and the King finally loses it. Grabbing Motormouth single-handedly by the collar, he growls never to insult CY again, for he has slayed so many lives and gone through so many trials all in his name, on his account, while others did nothing. And this, right here, is why I love GM, despite his inferiority complex and tests of loyalty and other trying issues. Because he one of the tiny handful of people who view and respect CY as a human. Others treat him as a Woodalchi General, a walking killing machine, but no one seems to think that it may be just as hard for him to raise his sword and shed blood as any of them. Of all of the pangs of conscience, the regret, the self-doubt, the nightmares, the utter pain that goes into just being and living and surviving as him.

After  the Chingook, CY just raises his head, his mouth silent but his eyes overflowing, and he just gives the tiniest smile and the smallest shake of the head imaginable. Don't worry about me, I'll be fine. Everything'll be fine. Just go with it.

JB relays the results of the Chingook to ES and says it would be better if she didn't wait for him. But Eun Soo is resolute. If he says he will come, he will come, and that's that, she has the strongest Faith out of anyone.

DM breaks in and frees CY, who promptly dispatches all the guards with a flaming log of wood from the lamps, and then walks out in a shower of sparks and heads to where ES is waiting.
The King was informed about CY prison break, and while no one is surprised, no one has the heart to capture and bring him back either (Assistant Commander even grins at the fact that CY is virtually uncatchable).

Eun Soo waits as she was told, all fidgety, but she can’t find him. Instead she finds herself surrounded by enemies in the dark feeling scared. Eun Soo hides from the patrols, and fumbles for her dagger when she hears a deadpan voice from behind her .
She whirls in alarm and found CY suddenly shows up from her back out of nowhere. Being emotional, ES ran up to CY and embraced him passionately.

CY was thrown back and feeling surprised for a moment by ES’s unexpected hug, soon he finds himself sharing a cuddle by slowly wrapping his hard chisel arms around her, hugged her warmly and comforted her. Finally both reciprocated in their warmed hugged !   ( hahaha, I am swooning and grining ! )

Episode 14 – Part 2

Cute moments….

While ES was eating, CY comes stomping in.

Aunt, Uncle and CY start talking business & CY snatches ES food away.
And she just keeps on giving these lustful stares towards the bowl while he eats away.

And he keeps on eating and talking. And the food keeps on dwindling.

And finally, Aunt and Uncle say something that catches everyone's attention.

They're cornered right now, so they can hole up for 3-4 days, in ONE room.

And he turns to ask her if they can do that.

And she goes "No Way." And he's all wait, we just hugged don't turn prudish on me now. Out loud he just says "What?" But we all know that that's what he means by what.

And she's all, How. Could. You. Eat. All. Of. It?!?

And he realises his mistake and and she gives him the dirtiest scoffing look ever.

Oh my cutiepies~look at the pose……….

She then asks the most important question: "What about food?"
And he chuckles and promises to get lots of it.

Eun Soo is so happy, radiant and satisfied …cuteness overload !

CY comes in to see ES frantically doing her calculations, and beating herself up for not being able to remember some Geography formulae.

She goes crazy eyed with happiness, spouting litanies of co-efficients and variables and special numbers.  He literally goes huh, with that face

But then she realises that her remembering the formulae correctly only means that she knows has to use them to do a few hundred pages worth of calculations, without a calculator. She buries her face in her arms.

I think CY is at the point of no return now - after getting that hug from ES, you can tell that he is now addicted to her as there were many attempts where he wanted to touch her again (i.e. trying to touch her hair, tracing her shadow). You can tell it's getting harder and harder for him to hold back. The tension between them….argggggggggg

He comes that close to touching her hair. And then he gives up with the most resigned look on his face.

They sit, parted by that paper-thin barrier wall, and she asks him if he wants to play a game that where they ask each other questions- but neither can lie. He agrees. "I don't lie. It's too much trouble."

She asks, if she manages to calculate the time, and if they make it to the gate, and then if she manages to leave... will he be alright?

….  I will not be

And she sighs, and yet at the same time has a small smile on her face, and says that she knew it. She'll do a lot of thinking too. "I'll miss the King and Queen, and JB and Deoki and LC, and the Warrior Maidens and the Woodalchi... and you."

And when ES said she'd miss him he reached out to touch her shadow..trace the lines of her face but when she said, that a dream is forgotten as the day gets brighter he removes him hand...my heart goes out him ... here he is trying to capture every memory of her, memorize every feature of her face only to hear that she would eventually forget him . damn I love this scene, and when he said he didnt want to know anything about her... that he already knew too much...the more he gets to know about her the more harder it becomes for him to let her go...my heart melts…

CY hears weird sounds coming from ES room, walk in to find her in a really bad state.

He flings his sword aside and it drops clattering to the ground and he takes her in his arms and shakes her, saying "Imja!"
When he shook her to wake up and then noticing the sweat on her face the way he threw his masters sword to lift and hold her in his arms , the horror in his eyes the fear ...loved it... LMH always had such expressive eyes.

Clearly, he's traumatized. The scene he's witnessing now certainly brought back some unpleasant memories from when he found the young prince dying back in episode 7...
He certainly doesn't want to experience the same thing with ES. At least if ES goes back to the future, even though he knows he would not be okay with it, but his heart would still be at ease knowing she's alive, living her life with all her might. But if she died, he will then be beyond salvation.

Thoughts on Episode 14

I loved Choi Young’s rare temper tantrum when he leaves the court after being accused of bribery. He’s furious about the charge agaist him, and mad at his men for being duped, telling them to stay away from him. He takes his rage out on a model building on a pedestal, smashing it to bits. It’s one of the few times he just loses it. And who would blame him?!

Later, Eun-soo comes to sit by him when he’s depressed by the unjust accusation. He’s so down that at first he doesn’t even look at her. She removes the stitches in  his arm while telling him what she’s figured out about the notebook. He stares at her, no longer able to pretend indifference. Then she teases him about the bottle and the flower, and gets quite the reaction. I laughed out loud when he grabbed the bottle from her, put his lips together and crossed his arms, looking like an embarrassed 10 year old! Then she describes the song about him and that people in heaven would laugh at the accusation. She doesn't condescend to him or ooze sympathy, which his pride would not let him accept. Instead she does things to rouse him and assure him of his worth. It’s just what he needs.

Later, once Young hears Teacher Ikjae threaten Eun-soo, saying that they need to use Eun-soo’s knowledge of the future for the good of the kingdom, or they need to stop her bewitching of the King, he tells Eun-soo to be ready to leave. She asks him to go with her and, after a moment of consideration, he agrees, and they set a meeting place for that night.

WMYgkzc.png

There are several sweet touches in this episode. For example, Eun-soo visits the Queen, telling her how she and the King are remembered in history, essentially saying goodbye and giving the surprised Queen a hug. And when Young goes to court for his trial, a huge group of Woodalchi accompany him to show their support. Ever mindful of their duty, though, Young reminds Choon-sik which of them are out of place and need to return to their guard positions.

Spoiler

At his trial, Young has already made up his mind how to deal with it. He knows what the gossip is in the city, and that even people in the court are using him to question whether the young King’s decisions are his own. He confesses to the crime, but his real confession is when he tells the King, “To have become trouble to Your Majesty, it pains me in the heart.” Through no fault of his own, he’s become a liability and needs to leave. One could argue that he needn’t plead guilty to an offense to do so, but because of their friendship, the King would be unlikely to let him go otherwise. Young’s slow shake of the head and slight smile, as he essentially tells the King not to stop the process, is very bittersweet.

O0QnBcA.jpg

Meanwhile, Eun-soo has matter-of-factly assured Dr. Jang that, of course Young will find some way to meet her that night. But she betrays her fear and anxiety when she first sees Young,  running to him and throwing her arms around him. He’s stunned at this rare display of affection, unsure for a few moments of what to do. Then he slowly puts his arms around her, holding her and patting her on the back, understanding how scared she was that he would be trapped in prison and unable to escape.

F21YcrM.jpg

There are some cute and funny scenes when they are fleeing both the  royal guards and Ki Chul’s private soldiers. Eun-soo jokes about how nice it was at Ki-chul’s house and the always-serious Young finds it not funny at all. And at the Suribang house, he scoops up her rice soup and wolfs it down. He probably hasn’t eaten anything since the trial and must be ravenous. But Eun-soo scolds him and he in turn assures her that she’ll have plenty to eat while they’re hiding out.

My favorite scene in this episode is likely to be the favorite scene of everyone else that watched it. When Young and Eun-soo go into their room at the Suribang house, they find themselves suddenly face-to-face, just a few inches apart. His unguarded look of raw desire took my breath away. She’s not ready for it and drops her eyes nervously, and the moment passes. But once she’s alone in the room and they’re separated by the thin partition, she tells him that she’ll miss everyone and then tenderly adds that she’ll miss him too. While she's talking, he touches and outlines her silhouette on the partition, just about the sweetest thing I’ve ever seen on the screen. His yearning is so clear there, as is his sadness and resignation when he says that he doesn’t want to know any more about her, he already knows too much. Sigh. This is terrific writing by Song Ji-na and LMH’s acting is equally terrific in this scene.

Thoughts on Episode 14

Sorry for cutting your post @msdot This is my favorite scene - it is so moving. The tough warrior and his vulnerable heart. Oh my my - beautiful scene indeed. The build up to it is very nicely done as well - she was right there in front of him but he doesn't make a move. But later touches her silhouette as if saying to himself that this is all he would allow himself to take.   My heart skips a beat just remembering the look on CY's face while they are face to face. Song ji Na knows just how to make our hearts race and LMH - is just so good in this. His eyes speak volumes.

I love this drama so much. LMH IS Choi Young here.

One of my favorite characters ever. I was hoping the book/ novel would get translated but it never was, as far as I know.
