Since @Lmangla kicked off the rewatch… here goes my unfiltered reaction / recap post of the first episode.

Episode 1, otherwise known as: "Girl, you have no idea what you're getting into."

I’ve put the rest of the post under a spoiler break as to not spam everyone.

Spoiler

Our party comprising the royal couple + the 15 or so Woodalchi guards have been stuck on a roadside inn because somebody bribed someone else and hid boats, so our gang can't cross the sea and have to stay the night in.

Sneaky ninjas sneak into the inn during the night (very dark, very dangerous) and woodalchi guards transform into Jedis with glow-in-the-dark swords.

Lightsaber fight, yay

Choi Young takes his job very seriously in his mission to protect the young King.

So basically, Choi Young is :

The ninjas manage to break in the main room where the royal couple is hiding, so CY has no choice but to kill them all (rip ninjas.)

He's beauty, he's grace, he will slash your face~

Even though they're in the middle of getting trapped by bad guys, CY and the King delve into a very passionate dialogue.Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-20-46-09.p

Oh mama the drama.

But alas, during the fight our beloved Queen gets badly injured. Fortunately for the gang, a star gate just happens to be nearby~ and our fearless leader Choi Young, captain of the Woodalchi guards gets sent through this portal to supposedly bring back a doctor from the otherworld~ in a desperate attempt to save the Queen's life.

Unbeknown to him, he travels through time to 2010s Seoul and finds himself in a medical convention, and barges into one of the event's lectures.

FIRST MEETING eeeeeeeek

Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-20-58-26.p

It's really interesting to see LMH's portrayal of the character during this scene and how he interpreted CY meeting this "otherworldly" woman. From what I remember in the companion novel, I think the writer described this encounter as him being mesmerized by this stunning fiery haired woman.

Clearly the feeling isn't mutual. This ain't love at first sight for Eun Soo ㅋㅋ

Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-21-03-00.p

Anyway, after a couple of shenanigans where Eun Soo proves that she is indeed skillful and can save lives, CY promptly grabs her to go back to his world. Eun Soo does not agree.

And this is where this show truly reveals its brilliant writing and its comedic undertones, because she calls this FLOWERBOY ahjussi :joy:

Careful son, this is your future wife you're carrying like a sack of potatoes.

Capture-d-e-cran-2020-08-18-a-21-15-22.p

The episode ends with two flashbacks:

- One of Eun Soo consulting a fortune teller that announces that she will soon meet an otherworldly super handsome man from the past (I see what you did there).

- A flashback of our Choi Young when he gets appointed Captain of the royal guards and meets the other Woodalchis. I had never noticed it before, but in this scene, Choi Young looks younger, more carefree and free of any burden. A sharp contrast to the current version we have of him, where he breathes sense of duty and seriousness.

Anyway that's it for me today. If you guys have any trivia from filming or behind the scenes tidbits, please do share! I'll try to do episode 2 tomorrow ^^

Morning Chingus'

Episode 1

Tired hoody Choi Young with this team of wooldalchi rides under the rain escorting King GM & Queen, however the carriage  got underway halfway during the journey.

Next scene sees quick & witty Dae man runs back to Choi Young informing him they can’t sail tonight and have to put up a night at the inn. Noisy JIS insist on continuing their journey but Choi Young ignore him.

(Q: any reason why JIS insist on continuing the journey instead of putting up a night at the inn)

Choi Young gets green light to put up a night. While inside the inn, the inn owner were bribed with money to vacant the place . King GM & Queen walk up the stairs to their resting place.

Choi Young found a bottle of soju and drink w/o hesistation and lay on the hard wooden stools for a rest.

(poor boy, you gonna get a back ache, come mama give you some soft pillow to rest down)

Captain Cheong Sook, gets all the wooldalchi on guard around the  inn.

King GM was doing some painting and yawning Choi Young walks in to inform that Queen will stay with him in the same room to ease protection  by the wooldachi.

(JIS, me no like, so skip his yapping, LOL)

I think it was so cute CY in Seoul. Trying to find an exit through the TV set to get to ES.  Talking to the monk and thinking he understood, just go, so he went. Surprising he did not get run over. He looked so innocent there. Literal CY that is what they call him. :joy: He so polite to ES, asking her to follow him to his queen. Does he not get it?  He almost killed the security person and made her do an ad-hoc operation.  Totally clueless that she must be terrified of him.  What a warrior!

Scene continue with tall lanky Dr Jang attending to the Queen's wound.

Choi Young uses his "chi" energy but seems does not help.

Dr Jang reports that the Queen condition does not look good and needs a Faith Healer.

Choi Young asked where to find this faith healer and Mr Motormouth Jo says from heaven !!!

Since Queen cannot be moved, Choi Young suggest that he move out to look for the  so call "faith healer" and leave some of his wooldalchi behind to guard the  Queen.

Next scene...

Mr Motormout Jo leads Choi Young together with  some  wooldalchi to a somewhat portal.

An altar was setup (with foods & drinks, hahaha like those chinese style).

Suddenly the  portal starts to kick up and Choi Young stand guard as the swirling hole opens up.

King GM turn to Choi Young with fear. ( I find King GM is kinda timid, lol)

Before Choi Young heads to the swirling portal , as a respect, he bow to King GM.

( OMG !..  Choi Young walks into the portal which none of them knows what the outcome, he is taking chances where he could either die or get stranded and never be able to come back to Goryeo again )

The swirling portal swallows Choi Young, teleport him to a New World ,landed  in front of a tall shrine.

Shocked and curious Choi Young finds tall buildings beaming with lights.

Episode 1

This is one of my favorite episodes and I find myself returning to it often for three reasons. First, we see the very beginning of Young and Eun-soo’s relationship, and that neither of them is emotionally healthy. Young sleeps a lot, focuses only on the requirements of his duty, and is uninvolved with others. Eun-soo is obsessed by finding money to fund her stem cell research, which she believes will lead to a secure position in her field. She’s even considered tricking a rich suitor into believing she cares about him to achieve that goal. From there one of my great delights in this series is to watch both of them grow as they develop strong relationships.

The second thing I like about this episode is that we are introduced to Young’s prowess as a warrior. I love the scene when he defends the King at the inn. It’s clear he is a masterful fighter. The contrast between that extraordinary level of deadly expertise and his youthful, almost angelic face, always tickles my brain. We’re introduced to his inner power as well, first as a healing aid, and then as a devastating explosion of power when he leaves COEX with the doctor over his shoulder. Just, wow!

8TwGaKq.jpg

Third, we see the huge difference in Choi Young’s versus Eun-soo’s view of violence. When Choi Young slashes the guard’s neck at the medical conference, to him it’s just part of a day’s work for the king. To everyone else, they’re (and we would be) horrified beyond words, and it’s the beginning of many shocks for the Doctor, who will face everyday violence she’s never seen or experienced before. So the series will have to answer this question: How will she resolve that trauma for herself, and can she love a man who regularly deals death to others and returns reeking of their blood?

 Episode 2

I enjoyed this episode, although I thought Eun-soo’s continued antics around not understanding where (and when) she was went on too long for me. But it was interesting to see how locked in she was to her perspective. Clues about where she was (and wasn’t) were all around her, at least enough to know she was no longer anywhere near modern-day Seoul. I do the same thing sometimes, when I need to shift my mindset about something and stay locked into it for too long, ignoring other data that’s in plain view. Regretfully, Choi Young has yet to come rescue me from my own follies!

We’re also introduced to one of the main villains in Faith, Ki-chul. There’s already a comedic/absurd edge to him and his crew, as the ingredients and preparation of his skin formula are creepy and way over the top. Not to mention his bejeweled hair net! At the same time his ruthlessness is emphasized as he sentences the Goryeo advisors to death. That combination of humor/absurdity and cavalier ruthlessness makes him one of my most memorable villains. At times I’m even tempted to like him!

Lastly I was struck in this re-watch by how long Eun-soo hesitates as she’s about to go through the portal, back to modern-day Korea. She sees that Choi Young is having a big disagreement with Il-shin about her going, and the argument is heated enough that people are drawing their swords. If she only wanted to return to her world, why didn’t she just leave? I’ve decided that she knew he was in a serious dispute and was already starting to care about him. Song Ji-na, the screenwriter of Faith, wrote in her novel that Choi Young went and got Eun-soo at the portal not only to follow orders but also responding to something in him that didn’t want to let her go. I think their attraction went both ways right from the start.

 I4EwwTt.jpg

Here’s a question. After being stabbed, Choi Young told first the Woodalchi and then Eun-soo to leave him behind. Do you think he thought he could cure himself or that he would just let himself die? I think it was both, that if he could cure himself with his inner power, fine, but if not, he was just as ready to embrace death. What do you think?

I apologize if this is too long.  I just adore this series and have watched it, oh, 20-30 times and counting. Looking forward to Episodes 3 & 4!

Wow @msdot your recap. Wow. You perfectly summed up how I felt during the episode.
You pin point exactly what’s wrong with both characters in the beginning: they’re both emotionally shut off, one barely living (Choi Young, just performing his duties like a robot), the other focusing on her career and not caring about anything else. As you said though, this is exactly what’s so intriguing about the both of them, because it’s the tipping point to a beautiful development.

This is also another super interesting take! Can Eun Soo, whose life revolves around saving lives, love someone whose duty is to kill people for a living?

THE CONTRADICTION! THE FRICTION! THE ANGST!
The premises of both characters is just.... gaaah perfect. It’s a textbook example of a writing trope where opposites attract.

Came in for LMH, stayed for the character development.

I think something was responding in her too, and that their attraction went both ways right from the start.

I’ve always wondered about that too. She was always so eager to leave from the get go, and yet when it came to actually go back, she hesitated. Almost as if something irrational pulled her back. (Thats called gut feeling Eun Soo. Your heart and body reacting unconsciously because deep down, you want to bang that hot Daejang warrior ㅋㅋ)

Also YES. Song Ji Na wrote that Choi Young was also irrationally mesmerized by Eun Soo. We don’t perceive it on screen, but when Choi Young grabs Eun Soo and drags her back, it’s not only him responding to an order but also a part of him that wants to keep her. I remember Song Ji Na wrote that he was completely taken with her flowery perfume and fiery hair~
