"Confidential Assignment 2: International" was the most popular movie over the Chuseok harvest holiday, according to the Korean Film Council on Monday.

The action-comedy sold 2,098,000 tickets from Sept. 8 to 11, topping the local box office charts for four straight days. The film premiered on Sept. 7.

The comedy "6/45" sold around 304,000 tickets during the same period, coming in No. 2.

"Confidential Assignment 2: International" is a sequel to 2017's "Confidential Assignment," which told the story of a South Korean detective played by Hyun Bin and a North Korean detective played by Yoo Hai-jin, who team up unofficially to root out a North Korean crime ring in South Korea. That film sold 7.81 million tickets.

In the sequel, the duo’s assignment goes international and the pair are joined by Daniel Henney, who plays an FBI agent. They must catch the leader of a North Korean crime cartel played by Jin Seon-kyu.

Confidential Assignment 2 Becomes This Year's Chuseok Blockbuster After Gaining Whopping Number of Moviegoers

Confidential Assignment 2, officially titled Confidential Assignment 2: International, premiered on

Confidential Assignment 2 has been making noise at the Korean box office since its release.

The highly-anticipated sequel of the 2017 film Confidential Assignment finally arrived this month. The new film tells the story of trilateral cooperation between North and South Korea and the US in pursuit of catching international criminals.

It features Hyun Bin, who plays his other North Korean role aside from the one he had in Crash Landing on You. He scored the titular role of Lim Cheol Ryung, a North Korean agent tasked to South Korea to take down Jin Sun Kyu's Jang Myung Joon. The latter character is the leader of a huge North Korean criminal organization.

Only a few days after its release, the new movie broke new records and became a hit during South Korea's Chuseok celebration.

Confidential Assignment 2: International Reaches Milestones

Korea JoongAng Daily noted that, on Monday, the Korean Film Council officially announced that the action-comedy topped the box office charts for four days. From September 8 to 11, it saw nearly 2.1 million moviegoers, beating 6/45 that sold 304,000 at No. 2 rank.

The installment reached the milestone faster than the original film. For what it's worth, the first Confidential Assignment movie reached 1 million moviegoers in five days and 2 million in 10 days.

With the number of moviegoers that went to see the new movie, it also managed to beat Top Gun: Maverick despite Tom Cruise's movie being one of the biggest box office hits in the country last summer

Confidential Assignment 2 also stars Girls' Generation's YoonA, Daniel Henney, Yoo Hae Jin, Lee Min Ji, Park Hoon, and Park Min Ha.

Director Lee Seok Hoon Hoped For the Best

Before the release of the film, the director and cast members had a press conference to promote the film. During the gathering, director Lee Seok Hoon expressed his goal to share the movie with the whole family during Chuseok Holiday.

According to the Korea Film Council's integrated computer network for movie theater tickets, the cumulative number of audiences for this movie reached 3,02,456 people around 12:50 p.m. on the same day. It easily passed the break-even point (3 million). The number of viewers increased faster than the previous film, which was popular during the Lunar New Year holiday in 2017.

In particular, during the Chuseok holiday, 'Cooperation 2' attracted many audiences. According to the National Film Council's integrated computer network for movie theater tickets, this work mobilized around 2,098,000 viewers over the three-day holiday from the 9th to the 11th. It was the biggest box office hit during the Chuseok holiday. For three days, the share of sales reached 75.9%.

However, compared to the pre-COVID-19 period, theaters performed poorly during the holiday period. The total number of movie theaters for three days was only 2762,000. It fell far short of the performance of the holiday season before the pandemic, which exceeded 1 million daily audiences.

Week in Insights: Crash Landing Into Something New

No need to Google. If all went well, that should be hello in Korean. It’s pretty formal—how you’d address a business partner.

Of course, I like to think we’re friends now. So I could also use the polite and respectful greeting, 안녕하세요.

No, I’m not fluent in Korean. But I’m learning.

A few weeks ago, my family was poking around Netflix for something to watch together since most of our favorites, like “Ted Lasso,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “Derry Girls,” are currently on a break in the US—yes, I’m aware that our friends across the pond have already watched the finale of “Derry Girls.” No spoilers!

We settled on “Crash Landing on You"—a wildly popular South Korean television show. The premise feels ridiculous: A successful South Korean businesswoman accidentally paraglides over the border into the North Korean side of the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ). The show was, however, inspired by a real-life event—a South Korean actress and three others became lost while on a boat trip and drifted close to the Northern Limit Line (NLL). They realized their mistake after encountering a group of North Korean fishermen before eventually being rescued by the Navy.

My whole family, including my husband, was quickly hooked despite the outlandish premise. It is swoony, funny, suspenseful, and heartbreaking all at once—plus, we’re learning something about the culture. It inspired me to dig a little deeper: I even found articles and scholarly papers about the interplay of North and South Korean cultures in the show.

Don’t expect to binge watch—each episode is as long as a mini-movie. We’ve been watching long enough to do some planning. Last week, we ordered from our favorite Korean restaurant, and I even tried my hand at making some Korean staples. (I don’t mean to brag, but it was pretty delicious.)

The show is in Korean with subtitles. That inspired my daughter and me to learn some basic Korean by trying Duolingo and watching video tutorials. I’m no Jisoo, but I can utter and type a few words—if you need to say “yes” or order chicken in Korean, I might be able to help.

It has been a great reminder of how fun it can be to step outside of your comfort zone and try things that are literally foreign to you. I highly recommend doing something similar. And while I’m all for picking up a new language or watching something different, you can dip your toes into something a little less radical, too.

We can help.

Over the last several weeks, we’ve covered such wide-ranging topics as a deep dive into estate and succession planning in the Middle East and an overview of the tax framework in Angola, including opportunities for local and foreign investors. We’ve looked at an ambitious project on the state taxation of partnerships and the tax consequences of the New York Cannabis Control Board’s recreational cannabis licenses. That’s in addition to our great roundup below.

At Bloomberg Tax, we aim to make it easy for you to learn something new. Our experts offer great commentary and insightful analysis on federal, state, and international tax issues—no Google Translate required.

Similar to 'Cooperation 2' and 'Crime City 2'... 10 million-dollar action blockbuster

[SBS ENT NEWS]

The movie 'Cooperation 2: International' (hereinafter referred to as 'Cooperation 2') garnered more than 2.8 million spectators during the Chuseok holiday.

According to the National Film Council's integrated computer network for movie theater tickets on the 13th, 'Cooperation 2' mobilized 2.83 million viewers nationwide from the 9th to the 12th, during the Chuseok holiday. The cumulative number of spectators was 3,343,579.

Since its release on the 7th, 'Cooperation 2', which has never given up the number one spot since its release on the 7th, surpassed 3 million in 6 days. Compared to the box office speed of the first film, it is twice as fast. The break-even point of this movie, which cost 18 billion won to produce, is 3.5 million people. Breakthrough is certain this week.

The explosive success of 'Cooperation 2' is reminiscent of 'Crime City 2', which was released in May. 'Cooperation 2' is also in the same action genre as it is a sequel to a top actor.

0000287418_002_20220913114901593.jpg?type=w430

While 'Crime City 2' introduced a new villain Seok-gu Son to the return of Ma Dong-seok to enhance the fun of the movie, 'Cooperation 2' upgraded the fun of the movie by putting Daniel Henney and Jin Seon-kyu in the return of Hyun Bin and Hae Hae-jin.

'Crime City 2' gathered 3.55 million viewers in the first week of its release, laying the foundation for a 10 million box office hit. 'Cooperation 2' is not as good as that, but it seems to be a big box office hit as it is a solo performance with no competitors and is also gaining word of mouth.

In the current atmosphere, it is possible to surpass the box office performance of the first part (7.81 million people) and aim for 10 million box office hits. However, as the holiday season is over, a drop in the number of viewers is inevitable. It seems that the key to a long-term screening is how consistently it can attract audiences.

On the 15th, 'Oh! 'My Ghost', 'Wolf Hunt' on the 21st, and 'Life is Beautiful' on the 28th will be released on the coming 28th.
