Choi Ji-woo returns with legal-romance drama

By Park Jin-hai The Korea Times

Actress Choi Ji-woo, second from right, stands with other cast members of the MBC's new legal romance drama "Woman with a Suitcase," during a press conference at MBC headquarters, western Seoul, Thursday.

Actress Choi Ji-woo, the iconic "Winter Sonata" heroine who stirred the first K-drama craze in Asia in the early 2000s, has returned to the small screen in a legal romance drama on MBC.

In "Woman with a Suitcase," which will premiere tonight and airs Monday and Tuesday, Choi plays a successful career woman Cha Geum-joo, a manager at an attorney's office, whose life goes into free-fall after she is framed and serves time in prison.

Written by Kwon Eum-mi, who previously wrote the romance drama "Royal Family" (2011) and crime thriller "Gap-dong" (2014), the new drama tells the story of Cha rising again to realize her dreams.

"I really wanted to play a bright but tough character," said the actress during a press conference at MBC headquarters, western Seoul, Thursday. "There's a combination of romance and mystery. I understood my character as a person who acts kind of silly sometimes, but is lovely. It was a little complex to depict her, but I did my best to portray her as an attractive person."

Unlike other legal dramas, "Woman with a Suitcase" will be lighter, spending more time out of the court. Instead of focusing on trials, the MBC drama will concentrate on the legal staff and other elements such as rampant social networking, websites-based rumor mills and paparazzi media.

Kwon said she wanted to that show the perspective that those who don't have "licenses" can do a better job than the licensed. "I thought that a legal drama shedding light on the ordinary people inside the legal circle, rather than lawyers, would be different and new," said Kwon. "I wanted to show that those unlicensed professionals can do better than those licensed lawyers and I also wanted to raise the question of whether those license–holders are doing their duty correctly."

Choi's love interest will be played by Joo Jin-mo, who takes on the role of paparazzi news agency K-fact's chief Ham Bok-geo. "As an outsider, my role is to reflect the voices of the viewers each episode I appear in and to deliver punch lines."

Asked about the difference from the recently ended tvN's legal drama "The Good Wife," a Korean adaptation of the popular CBS series with the same name that starred Cannes-winning actress Jeon Do-yeon and was directed by Kang Dae-sun, Kwon said that apart from the courtroom set, the new drama shares almost nothing.

"Our main sets are the public seating area in the courtroom and outside the court, since the protagonist runs to investigate outside. In terms of mood, if The Good Wife has been painted in a calm manner, ours will be more light and cheerful," she said.

Choi Ji-woo Stars in New Legal Drama

Source: The Chosun Ilbo

Actress Choi Ji-woo stars as a chief paralegal in a new MBC legal soap, which began airing on Monday.

Choi attended a press event for the new soap in Seoul last week.

"I was immediately drawn to the script. I had wanted to play a tough yet loving character, and the heroine was exactly that," she said. "I also liked that it had elements of a range of genres, including comedy, romance and mystery."

The series revolves around a fearless and successful working woman who bounces back after being framed for a crime and wrongly imprisoned.

Producers say the series' focus on the lives of paralegals, rather than lawyers, sets it apart from other legal dramas, which typically feature heavy, serious story lines.

Actress Choi Ji-woo Gives Final Thoughts on Ending "Woman with a Suitcase"

Source: STARNEWS via Hancinema.net

Actress Choi Ji-woo revealed that she was happy the entire time filming for "Woman with a Suitcase".

On November 16, YG Entertainment released the actress's final thoughts.

"I was happy throughout filming the entire drama because of my character, Cha Geum-joo. Towards the end, Cha Geum-Joo accomplishes her dream in becoming a great lawyer. This positive outcome made me happy to play this role", said Choi.

She also stated that because she was so focused on her character, she didn't notice time going by. She will deeply miss her role in this drama and will most likely feel a bit empty for a while afterwards.

She hopes that this drama gave hope and energy to the viewers as much as it did to her.

Actors, Idols, And Singers Feature On “The List” Of Most Fashionable Celebrities

Source: Soompi by C. Hong

On the April 24 episode of tvN’s “The List 2017,” experts selected which Korean celebrities they thought were the most fashionable.

G-Dragon topped the list and was especially noted for being a trendsetter, popularizing items such as skinny jeans and high-top shoes. Stylist Jung Bo Yoon said, “Even fashion school students get inspired by him. Luxury overseas brands fight over who gets to sponsor him.” Designer Jang Kwang Ho added, “He is a national treasure when it comes to fashion sense. I really want to know where he learned how to dress.”

Ryu Seung Bum

Second on the list was actor Ryu Seung Bum, who was noted for being ahead of the curve when it comes to fashion. Although he has been selected on “Worst Dressed” lists in the past, he has also received a lot of attention as a fashionista who keeps on top of new trends.

Gong Hyo Jin

This actress came at No. 3 on the list and was praised for being able to showcase a unique style that other people couldn’t even attempt.

Yoo Ah In

Sitting No. 4, the actor received praise from designer Jang Kwang Ho, who said, “Yoo Ah In is not ordinary. He has his own style.” Yoo Ah In has also shown interest in design and fashion in the past.

Ryu Jun Yeol

At No. 5 on the list, Ryu Jun Yeol’s aesthetic sense was attributed to his having learned fine arts from an early age. He even had experience in managing a shopping mall.

Jung Ryeo Won

This actress came in at No. 6 and was praised for creating a style that personally suits her instead of chasing after brands and prices.

f(x)’s Krystal

Well-known for being a fashionista among her many fans, Krystal was praised by Jung Bo Yoon for being the fashion icon that people in their 20s look up to. “She has a clean and polished casual style that uses basic items that everyone can own,” she said, and picked her tennis skirt as a trendsetting item among other girl groups. Krystal has also won the “Best Female Fashionista” title two years in a row at the Fashionista Awards.

Choi Ji Woo
