Top 10 Korean movies of 2020: Virus cuts 'Parasite' triumph short

The year 2020 started off strong for Korean cinema with "Parasite" making history by winning four Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Director and the International Feature Film category.

Shortly after the historic moment, however, the Korean movie industry experienced a drastic pandemic-driven decline, with theaters around the country closing indefinitely and studios moving most of their big releases to 2021.

Leading multiplex operators raised ticket prices as part of their attempts to survive the pandemic. Highly anticipated big budget films like "Seobok," "Mogadishu" and "Hero" have pushed back their releases to next year. "Space Sweepers," starring Song Joong-ki and Kim Tae-ri, is taking the safe route by premiering on Netflix in 2021.

But a slew of good local films still made it onto screens during this exhausting year. Below are the 10 Korean films that caught the eyes of both domestic and international audiences.

1. The Man Standing Next

A political thriller chronicling the 40-day power struggle among former President Park Chung-hee's top aides before one of them assassinated him in 1979 has been selected as a national contender for the 93rd Academy Awards in the International Feature Film category.

Directed by Woo Min-ho, "The Man Standing Next" unfolds a hidden story of political maneuvering by the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA) in the 1970s, a time of military dictatorship under Park.

Park is one of the most controversial figures in Korean's modern history, suppressing the country's supposed democracy while generating phenomenal economic development.

Actor Lee Byung-hun, who plays the role of the KCIA chief who assassinated the president, won best actor awards at this year's Asian Film Awards, Baeksang Arts Awards, Buil Film Awards, Chunsa Film Arts Awards and Korean Association of Film Critics' Awards.

2. Lucky Chan-sil

"Lucky Chan-sil" is director Kim Cho-hee's dedication to "anyone pursuing a dream." The indie film tells the story of a 40-year-old female film producer, who suddenly loses her job and faces the biggest crisis of her life. The film was highly recognized by critics and audiences for its meticulous and realistic depiction of Korea's patriarchal and competitive society from the perspective of a single, unemployed woman in her 40s.

This film won several awards at local film festivals last year, including three honors at the 24th Busan International Film Festival. It also won the audience award at the 45th Seoul Independent Film Festival. It received recognition overseas too, being invited to this year's Far East Film Festival in Italy and Osaka Asian Film Festival in Japan. Buoyed by critical acclaim, the film, which originally hit theaters in March, was re-released on Nov. 26. It's also going to hit theaters in Japan in January 2021.

Actor Kang Mal-geum, who plays her first lead role as Chan-sil, won best new actress awards at this year's Baeksang Arts Awards, Buil Awards and Korean Association of Film Critics' Awards.

3. Time to Hunt

"Time to Hunt" became the first Korean commercial film to skip theaters and go directly to Netflix. The film, originally slated to hit theaters at the end of February, waited two months and faced a legal dispute with its overseas sales company before landing on the U.S. streaming giant.

Set in a dystopian near future where the whole country is suffering from poverty following a financial crisis, "Time to Hunt" follows four young men who map out a plan to escape the hopeless city. But they are chased by a relentless killer amid their struggle for survival.

It was invited to the 70th Berlin International Film Festival's special gala section, which highlights creative film formats on current topics.

4. #Alive

Zombie thriller "#Alive" became the most streamed film on Netflix in many countries around the world, the first Korean title to achieve the feat.

Just two days after premiering on Netflix on Sept. 8, "#Alive" topped the global chart of Top Movies on Netflix, according to streaming analytics company FlixPatrol. The film ranked No.1 in 35 countries, including the U.S., France, Spain, Sweden, Russia and Australia.

"#Alive," starring Yoo Ah-in and Park Shin-hye, is a story about two survivors trapped in an apartment complex during a zombie apocalypse. Viewers are able to empathize with the characters' predicament, as they too are have experienced varying degrees of lockdown amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

5. Peninsula

Director Yeon Sang-ho's "Peninsula," a sequel to his zombie blockbuster "Train to Busan," takes the zombie apocalypse to another level. The zombies are much faster and fiercer compared to the original version, according to the director. While the uninfected characters from "Train to Busan" escape from the zombies, the sequel shows how the survivors fight back and some even take advantage of the situation.

Starring Gang Dong-won and Lee Jung-hyun, "Peninsula" tells a tale of survivors on the zombie-packed peninsula four years after the events in "Train to Busan." It follows protagonist Jung-seok, who goes back to the zombie-infested peninsula on a mission. The film was selected for the official lineup of this year's Cannes Film Festival, and was sold to 185 countries, including Japan, Taiwan, France and Italy.

6. Deliver Us From Evil

This was the first film released since March to sell more than 4 million movie tickets in Korea when it came out in August, temporarily reviving the Korean cinema scene struck by the pandemic.

"Deliver Us From Evil" tells the story of hitman In-nam (Hwang Jung-min), who plans to retire after carrying out one last hit. However, he gets embroiled in unexpected incidents as ruthless villain Ray (Lee Jung-jae) chases after him. In a year without travel, the audience may enjoy the exotic locales as the film was predominantly shot in Thailand and Japan.

Lee was named best actor in the film category at the 2020 Asia Artist Awards for his role as Ray in the hardboiled action film.

7. Moving On

Director Yoon Dan-bi's "Moving On" is like flipping through an old diary. It reminds the audience of their childhood memories and enables them to empathize with characters in the film. The plot is rather straight and simple. It's about a brother and a sister staying at their grandfather's house over the summer vacation with their father, joined by their aunt. The complex family relationship is shown through the eyes of Ok-ju, the sister.

"Moving On," which was honored with four awards at the 24th Busan International Film Festival, nabbed the Bright Future award at this year's International Film Festival Rotterdam. It also won the Uncaged Award for Best Feature Film at the New York Asian Film Festival, New Talent Award at Hong Kong Asian Awards Festival, Osler Best Feature Film Award at the 24th Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival, Best Film Award at Torino Film Fest, Special Jury Prize at 35th Mardel Plata International Film Festival and Best Film Award at Nantes Three Continents Film Festival.

8. Steel Rain 2: Summit

If the hit TV series "Crash Landing On You" is a star-crossed romance between a South Korean heiress and a North Korean army officer, director Yang Woo-suk's "Steel Rain 2: Summit" is about an unlikely bromance between a South Korean president and a North Korean general despite geopolitical challenges.

Although it's a sequel to 2017's "Steel Rain," the plot is completely different. If the first film was a fantasy envisioning the hermit kingdom's collapse through a coup and the outbreak of military conflict between the two Koreas, the follow-up shows an optimistic approach to the situation on the Korean Peninsula, depicting a rare tripartite summit on North Korean soil to officially end the 1950-53 Korean War and clinch a peace treaty.

9. Voice of Silence

Director Hong Eui-jeong's feature debut "Voice of Silence" is not a typical crime thriller that blends ferocious, bloody action and dark investigations. Rather, the film employs dark humor and mise en scene aplenty in following the story of two peculiar characters.

The story develops as two men, who normally get paid for cleaning up crime scenes, become responsible for taking care of a girl who has been kidnapped by a member of a criminal organization but then dies suddenly. Through the film, Hong raises moral and ethical questions like what determines an action as good or bad/evil. This film was shortlisted as one of five nominees for best film at Blue Dragon Awards. Actor Yoo Ah-in, who plays the role of Tae-in, gives a splendid performance although he has zero lines in the film.

10. The Woman Who Ran

"The Woman Who Ran" is the latest film by arthouse director Hong Sang-soo, whose works boast extraordinary depth and ambiguity. Hong won the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 70th Berlin International Film Festival for this film, winning acclaim for his "Mobius-strip approach to time and memory."

The film revolves around Gam-hee (Kim Min-hee), who meets three friends over three days while her husband is away on a business trip. As she travels alone for the first time in the five years since her marriage, she explores new ways of seeing the world. The director's naturalistic approach and appreciation of small moments, like statically framed long takes on characters and the abrupt zoom of mountains and neighborhoods, shows a natural progression of ideas.

Will Lee Jung Jae fill Bae Sung Woo’s shoes?

The actor’s agency Artist Company shared, “It’s true that Lee Jung Jae was offered to fill Bae Sung Jae’s shoes in the drama Delayed Justice, but nothing has been decided. We are still discussing the offer.”

A few days ago, the fact that Bae Sung Woo was booked by police for drunk driving was reported, and the actor exited the drama midway. The production team officially announced Bae Sung Woo’s exit yesterday and said, “After episode 12, which will air on Dec 12, we will be taking three weeks of break to reorganize. Bae Sung Woo already finished filming up to episode 16, but we will try our best to edit him out, and the actor will not appear from episode 17 to 20.”

Then earlier today, a media outlet reported that Lee Jung Jae will replace Bae Sung Woo in the drama. Lee Jung Jae worked with Delayed Justice director Kwon Jung Hwan in the Chief of Staff series.

Actor Lee Jung-jae may take Bae Sung-woo's role in the SBS series "Delayed Justice" after the show dismissed Bae following him being charged with drunk driving.

The network said Monday that it was "in final talks with Lee Jung-jae" for the casting of Bae's character.

Bae, who was playing the role of crusading journalist Park Sam-soo, is being investigated after he was caught drunk driving last month. His blood-alcohol level at the time was high enough to have his license revoked, police said.

When the issue came to the fore following media reports on Thursday, SBS announced the decision to axe the actor in a statement the next day.

"We have discussed ways to manage the situation after hearing the news, and concluded that the actor's removal is inevitable," it said.

The series, about lawyer Park Tae-yong (Kwon Sang-woo) and journalist Sam-soo fighting for justice, is about halfway into its 20-episode run.

"The show will take three weeks off from airing after the 12th episode on Saturday," SBS said. "We will edit out as many scenes of the actor as possible from the four additional episodes that have already been filmed."

Bae's agency Artist Company has acknowledged the drunk driving reports and apologized, saying it "will take full responsibility."

"We are deeply sorry to cause concerns to those who have supported Bae and sincerely apologize for the trouble," it said.

KOFIC estimates Korean box office down 74% in Covid-hit 2020

South Korea’s film industry is on course to have shrunk 63.6% by year’s end, according to a Korean Film Council (KOFIC) report on the impact of Covid-19 published today.

The government-funded organisation estimates that, firstly, overall box office is on track to have gone down by 73.7% by year’s end, with approximately 60 million admissions for the year accounting for $467.5m (KW510bn).

Secondly, digital online sales are estimated to have gone down from $466.9m (KW509.3bn) last year to $333.28m (KW363.5bn) this year.

Thirdly, overseas sales of films, locations and services are estimated to have gone from last year’s $78.85m (KW86bn) to $36.1m (KW39.4bn).

Box office

KOFIC notes that when the country has 5,000 or more confirmed cases of Covid-19 a month, the next month’s admissions drop by 50%. December admissions are estimated to see a 92.7% decrease compared to last December to about 1.64 million admissions.

With major theatrical releases postponed and/or cancelled due to the pandemic, independent and arthouse films have been getting more play this year. Compared to the 353 titles that got 415,699 screenings in total last year, this year’s indie and arthouse films numbered fewer at 320 titles but got more play with 514,814 screenings.

With a lack of new commercial fare, films such as 1917, #Alive, Tenet and local comedy Oh! My Gran were able to stretch their runs to two months or longer.

Re-releases also increased from 95 titles last year to 250 this year. (The average for re-released titles 2016-2019 was 86.75 per year.)

All in all, Korean films took 68.6% of box office as of December 7.

Digital online

Although digital online sales for films are estimated to have gone down, the local OTT market (encompassing TV and other content in addition to films) grew from $581.9m (KW634.5bn) last year to $715.4m (KW780.1bn) this year.

Films that opted to skip theatrical releases and go straight to OTT platforms included Berlinale title Time To Hunt, which postponed release and went directly to Netflix in April – controversially cancelling overseas sales deals in the process – and much-anticipated sci-fi film Space Sweepers, for which investor-distributor Merry Christmas had planned a summer release but ended up announcing a deal with Netflix in November.

Jung Woo-sung takes over 'Delayed Justice' lead role following Bae Sung-woo's DUI bust

Actor Jung Woo-sung will replace Bae Sung-woo in the lead role of the SBS TV series "Delayed Justice" after it axed Bae following a drunk driving charge.

The network announced Monday that Jung has been confirmed for the role and will start shooting the series this week.

Prior to Jung's acceptance of the part, actor Lee Jung-jae was reported to be "in final talks" to take Bae's role as crusading lawyer Park Sam-soo.

As the co-founders of Bae's agency Artist Company, Jung and Lee have been keen on managing Bae's situation.

"Lee Jung-jae was in process of readjusting his schedule to allow him to join 'Delayed Justice,'" the agency said in a statement Monday, adding that it was ultimately unfeasible.

"Jung wished to take on the responsibility, after learning the news," it said. "He decided to step in, as he hopes for the series to wrap up production successfully."

With the new lead cast member, the network will resume airing the series from the beginning of January 2021.

The network will edit out most of Bae's scenes from the episodes that have already been filmed. And Jung will appear as the character from episode 17 through to the end, it said.

The series, which has aired 12 of its 20-episodes, halted production after the former lead Bae was reported to have been caught drunk driving last month. His blood-alcohol level at the time was high enough to have his license revoked, police said.

When the news of his charge came out on Dec. 11, the network made the decision the next day to dismiss him from the show, saying it "concluded that the actor's removal was unavoidable."

Theaters in December sat almost empty with nearly all highly anticipated films scrambling to push back their release dates due to a spike in the number of daily coronavirus cases. With the exception of small or independent films, only two films of note were released last month — “Josee” and “Wonder Woman 1984.”

Imminent releases include “New Year Blues,” “Seobok” and “Life is Beautiful” — all three of which were scheduled to hit screens last month.

Director Hong Ji-young’s “New Year Blues” stars an array of popular actors such as Kim Kang-woo, Yoo In-na, Yoo Yeon-seok, Lee Yeon-hee, Choi Soo-young and Yoo Teo. The movie is set a week before the new year, and the actors portray four sets of couples or potential love interests.

Director Lee Yong-joo’s “Seobok” was one of the most anticipated films of 2020, generating buzz for the collaboration between Gong Yoo and Park Bo-gum. The sci-fi film revolves around an ex-intelligence agent Gi-heon’s last mission to deliver humanity’s first human clone, Seobok, to safety.

“Life is Beautiful,” starring actors Yum Jung-ah and Ryu Seung-ryong, is a musical about a wife who, after finding out that her days are numbered, goes on a road trip with her husband to find her first love as her last birthday wish.

The three films are expected to unveil their premiere dates as soon as the current uptick in Covid-19 cases can be contained. But in the face of the unpredictable coronavirus, none of the film distributors can pinpoint a specific date, and that also goes for a plethora of other films which had hoped to premiere last year.

Director Yoon Je-kyun’s musical film “Hero,” director Ryu Seung-wan’s “Mogadishu,” and historical dramas “The Book of Fish” by director Lee Joon-ik and "Hansan" from director Kim Han-min are also waiting for a chance to hit big screens.

Based on the musical production of the same title, actor Jung Sung-hwa portrays independence activist Ahn Jung-geun (1879-1910) during his last year of life while in prison in "Hero." Jung starred as Ahn in the musical since 2009. Director Yoon was to have been immensely moved by the original musical and tried his hand at recording the songs live on the set, just as Tom Hooper’s “Les Miserables” (2012) did.

Action-crime film “Mogadishu” featuring actors Kim Yoon-seok, Zo In-sung and Heo Joon-ho, was another highly anticipated project which had already finished filming in Morocco early last year and was set for a summer release. The film is based on a real-life defection of two Korean embassies which took place in the mist of the Somali Civil War in the 1990s.

“The Book of Fish” is the second black-and-white film from director Lee after “Dongju: The Portrait of A Poet” (2016). “The Book of Fish” is the tale of a camaraderie that blossoms between Jeong Yak-jeon (1758-1816) who is a scholar from the Joseon Dynasty (1319-1910) and a peasant named Chang-dae who work together to write a book on marine biology titled “Jasaneobo.” The film features actors Seol Kyung-gu and Byun Yo-han as the scholar and the peasant.

“Hansan” is the second film in a trilogy based on general Yi Sun-sin (1545-1598), originally set for release this year. The first film “Roaring Currents” (2014) still ranks No. 1 in the history of local box office, having drawn over 17 million audience members. The film covers the period of the first battle after the outbreak of the Imjin War (Japanese invasion of Joseon from 1592-1598).

Another film set for release this year is political drama “Kingmaker.” Based on Uhm Chang-rok, a real-life kingmaker or person who brings leaders to power through the exercise of political influence, the film is anticipated to depict a gripping political battle as politician Kim Woon-beom (played by Seol Kyung-gu) strives to become president with the assistance of a kingmaker Seol Chang-dae (played by Lee Sun-kyun).

“Emergency Declaration,” a film which takes place on an airplane while the world below is plunged into an apocalypse, features stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Byung-hun, Jeon Do-yeon and Im Si-wan. It is director Han Jae-rim’s latest film and is also expected to hit the theaters this year.

The two maestros of Korea and Japan are each preparing for new projects as well. Director Park Chan-wook is filming “Decision to Break Up” (translated) with actors Park Hae-il and Tang Wei while director Hirokazu Koreeda is wrapping up a screenplay for his first try at a Korean film tentatively titled “Broker.” It is set to begin filming this year with mega-popular actors Song Kang-ho, Kang Dong-won and Bae Doo-na.

Korean-American director Lee Isaac Chung’s “Minari” is set to arrive in local theaters in the first half of this year. The film is based on the director’s own childhood and is about a Korean family that emigrates to Arkansas in the 1980s in search of the American dream. The film is receiving international accolades across the globe similar to director Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite,” and film critics reckon it's in with a strong chance for an Oscar nomination. The film features Korean and Korean-American actors such as Steven Yeun, Han Ye-ri and Youn Yuh-jung.

Continuing with films that were scheduled to premiere last year, Netflix, a platform which streams in 190 countries, became the host for many that chose not to premiere on the big screen.

“What Happened to Mr. Cha?” premiered on Jan. 1 on Netflix. Starring actor Cha In-pyo, the actor uses his actual name and adapts his own filmographies in the film to tell the story of a '90’s icon still caught up on his former glory and his struggles to become popular again.

Sci-fi film “Space Sweepers” stars actors Song Joong-ki, Kim Tae-ri, Jin Seon-kyu and Yoo Hae-jin as space pirates who come across a humanoid robot Dorothy, which is also a weapon of massive destruction. Netflix has yet to announce a release date for the film.

In terms of Netflix original series, be on the lookout for director Yeon Sang-ho’s “Hellbound,” “Kingdom: Ashin of the North,” and “Round Six.”

“Hellbound” is adapted from the Naver webtoon “The Hell,” in which the director scripted the story, and “Kingdom: Ashin of the North” is reported to be a side-sequel from the “Kingdom” series featuring actor Jun Ji-hyun. “Round Six,” starring actors Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo and Heo Sung-tae among others, is director Hwang Dong-hyuk’s latest film about a survival game in which the ultimate winner is awarded prize money that could change their lives.

Actor Lee Jung-jea will make a guest appearance on the SBS TV series "Delayed Justice," according to the network, Tuesday.

The broadcaster told local news outlets that the actor will briefly appear "as a courtesy for series director Kwak Jung-hwan." He worked with the director on the JTBC series "Chief of Staff," which ran for two seasons in 2019.

In "Delayed Justice," Lee plays lawmaker Jang Tae-jun, his character from "Chief of Staff." SBS said Lee shot the episode Tuesday.

Lee was originally "in final talks" to replace actor Bae Sung-woo as the lead character of "Delayed Justice" ― lawyer Park Sam-soo ― after Bae was axed from the series in early December after being charged with drunk driving.

Bae was reported to have been caught driving drunk in November with a blood-alcohol level high enough to have his license revoked, police said.

The network announced that Bae had been dismissed from the show soon after the charge made the headlines.

The series, which had aired 12 of its 20-episodes run up to Bae's removal, halted production for about three weeks to edit the actor out from filmed episodes and to find a new lead for further episodes.

The role went to Jung Woo-sung when Lee concluded he could not join due to his schedule. Jung will be taking over from episode 17, which is set to air Friday.

The 41st Blue Dragon Film Awards, which were postponed last year due to the spread of COVID-19, will be held on Feb. 9, the awards’ organizers said Tuesday.

The awards ceremony, one of the most prestigious film events here, was to have been held on Dec. 11 but it was postponed indefinitely due to the spike in the number of COVID-19 cases in late 2020.

“The Man Standing Next” has been nominated for 10 awards, followed by “Deliver Us from Evil” for eight awards, “Moonlight Winter” for seven awards and “Kim Ji-young, Born in 1982” for six awards.

Nominees for the best film are “Sibling’s Summer Night,” “The Man Standing Next,” “Voice of Silence,” “Moonlit Winter” and “Kim Ji-young, Born in 1982.”

Directors Yang Woo-seok of “Steel Rain 2: Summit,” Yeon Sang-ho of “Peninsula,” Woo Min-ho of “The Man Standing Next,” Lim Dae-hyung of “Moonlit Winter” and Hong Won-chan of “Deliver Us from Evil” are in the running for the best director prize.

Actresses Kim Hee-ae of “Moonlit Winter,” Ra Mi-ran of “Honest Candidate,” Shin Min-a of “Diva,” Jeon Do-yeon of “Beasts Clawing at Straws,” Jung Yu-mi of “Kim Ji-young, Born in 1982” are competing for best actress.

The nominees for best actor are Yoo Ah-in of “Voice of Silence,” Lee Byung-hun of “The Man Standing Next,” Lee Jung-jae and Hwang Jung-min of “Deliver Us from Evil,” Jung Woo-sung of “Steel Rain 2: Summit.”

Nominees for the awards were selected based on film critics’ and online votes for Korean films which took place Oct. 11, 2019 to Oct. 29, 2020.

This year’s awards ceremony will be held at integrated resort complex Paradise City in Incheon without an in-person audience for safety reasons. It will be broadcast live on SBS and Naver TV.

Jeon Hye Jin and Jin Seon Kyu are in talks to join Jung Woo Sung in Lee Jung Jae’s directorial debut film Hunt.

According to a media outlet, Jeon Hye Jin and Jin Seon Kyu are considering taking their roles in Hunt.

Hunt is a spy action drama in which the ace agent of the National Security Agent Park Pyeong-ho (Lee Jung-Jae) and Kim Jeong-do (Jung Woo-sung), are confronted with the huge truth while chasing the general manager of the North Korean spy.

Hunt made headlines as the directorial debut film of the veteran actor Lee Jung Jae, who has worked on the screenplay for about 4 years. Sanai Pictures, which presented several tentpoles movies, including Money, The Spy Gone North, Asura: The City of Madness, and New World, will take charge of the production.

Lee Jung Jae will be the director and lead actor of the film at the same time. Earlier on, Lee’s best friend Jung Woo Sung confirmed his casting as Kim Jung Do, Park Pyung Ho’s partner, and a rival. These two actors haven’t worked on the same project despite their well-known friendship since the 1999 film City Of The Rising Sun.

Jeon Hye Jin has been offered a charismatic NIS agent role, who works in the same team as Jung Woo Sung. If she decides to take the role, she will have been back to the big screen two years after the release of Ashfall. If he decides to join the movie, Jin Seon Kyu will be playing another NIS agent from Lee Jung Jae’s team.

Hunt plans to complete its major casting and start filming in the first half of this year.

In 1995, the drama Sandglass took South Korea by storm, and it was a critical shot for Lee Jungjae to impress the public. Playing the role of bodyguard Baek Jaehee, Lee shook the hearts of viewers with his character silently standing by the heroine with intense eyes and action performance without a single line. After leaving this indelible impression, Lee Jungjae made himself known on screen by playing Hongki, a young man in the youth action film City of the Rising Sun (1998), directed by Kim Sungsoo. Perfectly depicting a young man dazzled by money and dreams, Lee has since been always in his element without stepping down from the top star position on screen.

The 57th Baeksang Arts Awards unveiled its nominees for the categories of Television, Movies, and Plays.

The executive office of Baeksang Arts Awards announced the final list of actors and works for each category on the morning of the 12th through their official website. The nominees are chosen from those who were active in the past year in the fields of TV, movies, and plays.

Listed for Television series are Beyond Evil (JTBC), It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, Flower of Evil, My Unfamiliar Family (tvN), and Extracurricular (Netflix). Nominees for Best Entertainment Program were spread among various channels, including March of the Ants (KakaoTV), Hangout with Yoo (MBC), Sing Again (JTBC), You Quiz on the Block (tvN), and Legendary Stage – Archive K (SBS).

Furthermore, Architectural Exploration – Home season 3 (literal translation) (EBS), The Story of the Day Biting the Tail (SBS), Archive Project – Modern Korea 2 (KBS 1TV), Differential Class (JTBC), and Battle of the Century AI vs Human (SBS) were nominated for the Best Educational Show Award.

The competition for the best actor awards is fierce, as always. Nominated for Best Actor are Kim Soo Hyun (for tvN’s It’s Okay to Not Be Okay), Song Joong Ki (for tvN’s Vincenzo), Shin Ha Kyun (for JTBC’s Beyond Evil), Uhm Ki Joon (for SBS’ The Penthouse), and Lee Joon Ki (for tvN’s Flower of Evil). Who will take the honor of the Best New Actor, the award that can only be won once in a lifetime? This year’s Baeksang Arts Awards will take into consideration contents released between May 1st of 2020 to April 11th of 2021. This includes all Korean media from terrestrial, cable, OTT, and web channels. 40 total members of the professional judging committee within the industry conducted a preliminary survey to select final candidates.

The Baeksang Arts Awards will be held live on JTBC from 9 PM KST on May 13th. It will be hosted without audiences, due to the COVID-19 situation.

Director Lee Joon-ik of the period film "Book of Fish" and comedian Yoo Jae-suk were the big winners at this year's Baeksang Arts Awards.

At the ceremony that took place on Thursday evening at KINTEX exhibition hall in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, Lee became a three-time grand prize winner after taking home the same award in 2006 for "King and the Clown" and in 2016 for "The Throne" and "Dongju: The Portrait of a Poet."

"A period film costs so much to make. The cast and crew made sacrifices in order to bring this film to the big screen. The film wasn't a big success although it received good reviews from critics and movie fans. Thank you for the award," Lee said during his acceptance speech.

The acclaimed director also paid tribute to the late veteran film producer Lee Choon-yun, who passed away on May 11. He was the head of Cine 2000 and producer of hit films including "Art Museum By the Zoo" (1988) and "The Terror Live" (2013).

Director Bong Joon-ho attended this year's event as presenter, after he didn't show up at last year's event even though he won the grand prize for his black comedy thriller "Parasite." It has been reported that his next project will be an animated film about deep-sea creatures. He is now writing the script for a currently unnamed English-language film.

The female-driven mystery comedy "Samjin Company English Class" won the Best Film award, while director Hong Eui-jeong of the crime thriller "Voice of Silence" received the Best Director award. Filmmaker Park Ji-wan won the Best Screenplay award for his crime drama "The Day I Died: Unclosed Case."

Yoo Ah-in won the Best Actor award for his role as a mute crime scene cleaner in "Voice of Silence," while Jun Jong-seo took home the Best Actress award for her role as a psychopath in the thriller "The Call."

The Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards in the film category went to Park Jung-min, who played a transgender character in "Deliver Us from Evil," and Kim Sun-young, who played an ailing single mom in "Three Sisters."

Comedian Yoo won the grand prize for hosting hit variety shows such as tvN's "You Quiz of the Block" and MBC's "Hangout with Yoo." With the latest recognition, Yoo became a two-time grand prize winner following 2013 for SBS's "Running Man"

"I don't know what to say. It's such a pleasure and honor to accept this award. People call me a presenter or TV show host, but I'm a comedian. I'll try to arouse more laughter in the future," Yoo said in his acceptance speech.

JTBC's drama series "Beyond Evil" grabbed three awards ― Best Drama, Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Shin Ha-kyun. Kim So-yeon won the Best Actress award for her performance in "The Penthouse: War in Life."

The Best Director award in the TV category went to Kim Cheol-kyu of tvN's drama series, "Flower of Evil." The Best Supporting Actor and Actress awards in TV went to Oh Jung-se, who played a patient with autism in tvN's "It's Okay to Not Be Okay," and Yeom Hye-ran who played the leader of the counters in OCN's "Uncanny Counter."

For variety shows, singer-actor Lee Seung-gi won Best Variety Performer awards for JTBC's "Sing Again" and Jang Do-yeon won for MBC's "I Live Alone."

The TikTok Popularity Awards, voted by video app TikTok users around the world, went to Kim Sun-ho of tvN's drama series, "Start-Up," and Seo Yea-ji of, "It's Okay to Not Be Okay."

The organizing committee shrugged off a dispute surrounding Seo despite growing calls to remove her from the list of nominees as she has been embroiled in controversy over manipulating and controlling her then-boyfriend Kim Jung-hyun in 2018.

South Korea’s powerhouse film industry continues to produce titles such as Han Jae-rim’s disaster thriller Emergency Declaration, which plays here Out of Competition, and Hong Sangsoo’s In Front Of Your Face, the auteur filmmaker’s latest, which is in the new Cannes Premiere strand.

Korean sales agents in the market are showcasing everything from undead mystery thriller The Cursed: Dead Man’s Prey, written by Train To Busan director Yeon Sang-ho, to the highly anticipated Song Joong-ki vehicle Bogota: City Of The Lost, and debuting feature director Kim Min-sub’s Demilitarized Zone horror thriller Going Home.

The Cursed: Dead Man’s Prey

Written by Train To Busan director Yeon Sang-ho, this undead-themed mystery thriller stars Uhm Ji Won (Master), Jeong Ji So (Parasite) and Jung Moon Sung. Following a brutal murder case, the police are baffled to find out the assailant, whose body was found at the scene with the victim, had already been dead for three months. An anonymous caller, who claims to be the true killer, announces that three more murders will occur at the hands of the undead. The film is set for local release on July 28. Hwang’s action drama stars Kim Rae-won (Crazy Romance) as a former naval commander who becomes the target of a terrorist, whose modus operandi is to use improvised explosives that react to a certain decibel. Everglow

Starring veteran actress Goh Doo-shim and Ji Hyun-woo, this drama follows a documentary producer who visits Jeju Island to film a haenyeo — or ‘sea woman’ — who dives without breathing equipment for seaweed and shellfish. At first she strongly refuses to be filmed, but on realising how sincere he is, relents. Gradually they open up to each other and fall in love, despite their 40-year age gap. Firefighters

Based on a true event, Kwak Do-won (The Wailing) and Joo Won (Fatal Intuition) star in this firefighter drama from Kwak, whose last feature was 2019’s The Battle Of Jangsari. The story follows a new recruit to Seoul fire station who is sent on his first mission with a lionised veteran. Tensions between the two men fester when the experienced firefighter disobeys a withdrawal order that results in a girl’s life saved but also the death of a fellow fireman. Gangster Noodle

Winner of the Korean competition section at this year’s Jeonju International Film Festival, this drama follows three high-school students who end their poetry club to focus on college entrance exams. The next year, one of the girls invites one of the others to her place in Seoul. She is excited to spend time with her friend but it turns out the hostess is pre-occupied with sending emails to her professors to get her grades corrected. My Puppy

Yoo Yeon-seok and Cha Tae-hyun star in this family drama from the director of The Divine Fury. Enlisting the help of his cousin, who has a large social-media following, the pair set out to find the dog a new home, travelling from Seoul to Jeju Island. Love stories have become very rare recently. Romance is constantly seeking viewers on small screens, but the latest Korean films are mostly based on other genres. Indeed, some are them are in the production stage: Jeon Jong Seo and Son Seok Gu’s Romance Without Love (working title), Lee Dong Wook and Lim Su Jeong’s Single in Seoul, and Han Ji Min, Yoona, Kang Ha Neul’s Happy New Year. However, there are not many of them. Actors who have elicited various emotions in romance films in the past nowadays play characters with no love lines. Hoping to see the romantic side of the actors on the screen again, let’s relieve the disappointment with the movies introduced below.

Il Mare (2000)

Il Mare is a movie starring Lee Jung Jae and Jeon Ji Hyun, who rarely star in romance films nowadays. It depicts the story of a man and a woman living in a picturesque house called ‘Il Mare’ with a time difference of a year. They get to know each other’s existence by exchanging letters and slowly fall in love. Directed by Lee Hyun Seung, who received great attention for sophisticated color images with an urban sensibility in The Blue in You (1992) and Sunset into the Neon Lights (1995), it became the first Korean film to be remade in Hollywood (The Lake House, 2006). Unfortunately, it was relatively underrated at the time of its release compared to Ditto, which has a similar subject matter. Still, the affectionate love that unfolds in the beautiful footage and Kim Hyun Cheol’s “Must say goodbye” leave a long-lasting impression.

The Classic (2003)

The movie is based on Hwang Soon Won’s novel, Showers. My Sassy Girl director Kwak Jae Yong introduced the lead actors Son Ye Jin and Cho Seung Woo to the public. In it, Son Ye Jin played two roles in this movie and emerged as a star with clean and pure beauty. The story begins when a daughter accidentally finds her mother’s love letters from when she was young. Although it is somewhat sentimental, the meticulous setting that stimulates nostalgic feelings and the familiar melody of the music harmonize all together. Also, it is a rare work where you can see the heartbreaking performance of Cho Seung Woo, who has become a great actor.

Maundy Thursday (2006)

It is an adaptation of Gong Ji Young’s novel of the same title. The combination of Kang Dong Won and Lee Na Young attracted great attention. Director Song Hae Seong said, “If you look closely at the two actors, there is a subtle sadness. Just as Yoo Jung and Yun Su share similar wounds, the lead actors also resemble each other.” The movie tells the story of a man who faces the death penalty for a murder charge but desperately wants to live and a woman who has no attachment to life enough to attempt to commit suicide three times. Together, they miraculously share each other’s feelings. Despite having such different backgrounds and perspectives, the movie depicts the moment they bring out their painful wounds, loneliness, and despair to each other. Soon, they truly begin to connect, give comfort, and thus, love and understand each other. Although its subject is rather heavy, the harmony of plainspoken directing and the actors’ soul-stirring performances were impressive.

A Season of Good Rain (2009)

Many would consider A Moment to Remember (2004) as Jung Woo Sung’s best romance film in which he starred with Son Ye Jin. But I think his hidden masterpiece is A Season of Good Rain. Made by Christmas in August (1998) and One Fine Spring Day (2001) director Hur Jin Ho, A Season of Good Rain is a movie that brings excitement out of its beauty of simplicity. It follows a man and a woman who were attracted to each other while studying abroad in the US but could not open their hearts. After a long time, they run into each other in China and fall in love again. The chemistry between Jung Woo Sung and Gao Yuanyuan is good, and the whole movie is full of pleasantly refreshing feelings. The film has the lightest mood among director Hur Jin Ho’s other romance films.

Finding Mr. Destiny (2010)

Based on the musical of the same title, Finding Mr. Destiny is a film that focuses more on the actors, especially Gong Yoo, rather than the plot. It depicts the twists and turns of romance between Ji Woo, a girl who goes out to find her first love pushed by her father, and Ki Joon, who opened a search agency for his first love after being laid off because of his savvy personality. Although there were generic discrepancies caused by adapting a musical into a movie, Gong Yoo’s hot features made us overcome boredom, cringes, and cliches. He even looked dashing with the horrendous 2 to 8 side hair part. His collaboration with Lim Soo Jung is also lovely. At the end of the movie, you can listen to the song Gong Yoo sang himself. It is with a light melody that starts with the lyrics, “The moment we first met, I was quite scared of you.”

Late Autumn (2010)

This movie drew a lot of attention as Hyun Bin, who gained huge popularity with Secret Garden, and Tang Wei of Lust and Caution co-starred. It is a remake of Lee Man Hee’s 1966 film of the same title. It depicts an unforgettable love between a female prisoner who takes a three-day vacation and a man who is on a run. Their love story in strange places lacks big dramatic events, but the sad and lonely emotions left by a short encounter followed by a long separation leave a lingering impression. The foggy and inclement weather in Seattle also doubles the loneliness of the film.

Jung Woo Sung and Lee Jung Jae tested negative - Artist Company gave update

Jung Woo-sung and Lee Jung-jae are confirmed to be negative, and filming canceled due to confirmed case of Hunt...The movie industry is also on the rise.

Actors Jung Woo-sung and Lee Jung-jae were tested negative for covid-19.

On the 13th, Lee Jung-jae and Jung Woo-sung's agency Artist Company said, "Hunt has been tested preemptively in consideration of the recent spread of corona. Lee Jung-jae and Jung Woo-sung have been tested negative."

Earlier, Han Jae-deok, CEO of Manai Pictures, the production company of the movie Hunt, was confirmed to be COVID-19, and the production team, as well as actors Lee Jung-jae and Jung Woo-sung, were also tested for corona.

At the time, CEO Han Jae-deok did not visit the filming site, but conducted a corona test in a preemptive manner in case of an emergency. In the process, all filming was canceled after the field staff was confirmed.

An official from Hunt also said, "We will re-adjust future schedules, including the resumption of filming, while watching the situation."

Meanwhile, "Hunt" is Lee Jung-jae's directorial debut film, which is an intelligence film that faces huge truths while chasing the ace agents of the National Security Agency and the spy general manager of the South. Lee Jung-jae plays both as an actor and a director.
