Production on CHOI Dong-hoon’s ASSASSINATION WrapsPeriod Thriller Expected for Summer Release by Pierce Conran / KOFIC

On January 31st, CHOI Dong-hoon completed filming of his next big-budget thriller, Assassination. Featuring stars HA Jung-woo, JUN Ji-hyun and LEE Jung-jae, the period film looks to be one of this summer’s biggest local films. Assassination’s lengthy production began back on August 27th in Shanghai and finished last month back on Korean soil, in Paju. The last scene filmed was one featuring HA and supporting star OH Dal-su. Set in the 1930s, during the colonial era, CHOI’s film features a group of rebel agents and mercenaries seeking to take out a pro-Japanese group. JUN plays a sniper who leads the group while LEE features as an interim government agent and HA plays Hawaii Pistol, a gun for hire. Director CHOI struck gold with his last film The Thieves (2012), which is currently the fourth most successful Korean film of all time with almost 13 million tickets sold. In addition to the headline stars, Assassination will also feature the aforementioned OH, as well as LEE Gyoung-young and CHO Jin-woong.
The film was produced by Caper Film’s AHN Soo-hyun and will be distributed by Showbox, which also worked with CHOI on The Thieves and his debut The Big Swindle (2004).

'Assassination' poster unveiled
The overseas promotional poster of upcoming crime film "Assassination," starring actress Jun Ji-hyun, has been unveiled.
The film stars Jun in the lead role alongside male actors Ha Jung-woo and Lee Jung-jae as coconspirators and partners in crime.
"Assassination" is set against 1930s Shanghai and Seoul, which was under Japanese colonial rule from 1907 until the end of World War II.

Jun plays freedom fighter and nationalist sniper An Ok-yoon in a change of roles from her more lively and sensual choices in the past.

Her costar Lee plays gang leader and Korean provisional government agent Yeom Seok-jin, while actor Ha plays contract killer Hawaii Pistol.
Director Choi Dong-hun previously worked alongside Jun, a popular actress and celebrated Korean beauty, in the 2012 crime blockbuster "The Thieves," which he both directed and cowrote.
"Assassination," which is in the second half of production, is set for release in Korea this summer.

There's something special about these top stars
Source: Sports Donga via Hancinema.net
photo587698.jpg
Top stars Song Kang-ho, Lee Jeong-jae and Son Ye-jin are now headed for the international market.
With complete promotional power and name value, these top stars have announced progress into Hollywood and China.
Lee Jeong-jae stars in the Chinese movie "Reversal Day" starting this July. This is his first foreign project in 20 years and collaborates with China Films and High Loon. Son Ye-jin is currently filming a Chinese movie called "Bad Guys Will Die", a dark comedy directed by Feng Xiaogang.
Their approach to the Chinese market is quite tactical compared to other stars that have made it to China. They are getting the help of many Korean movie makers who have been friends for a long time in addition to working with the best teams in China. Lee Jeong-jae's "Reversal Day" is in fact being overlooked by Doo Ta-yeon and Son Ye-jin's movie is directed by Kang Je-gyu. The movies are being filmed in Seoul and Jeju Island. They are starting off in a stabilized environment.
It looks like they will quickly take their places as role models in progressing to China. Hallyu agents claim they were very tempting to cast into the Chinese movie industry and they will be a good prime example for those considering progress into China.
Song Kang-ho chose to work with Warner Brothers which is investing in the movie, "Secret Agent" starting this August. The investment starts off with 100 billion won and this means a lot as it's the first time Warner is investing in a Korean movie. It is likely the movie will target not only Korea but China and other parts of Asia as well.

ASSASSINATION and THE TREACHEROUS Find Buyers Ahead of Cannes

Period Films Sold to North America, France and Asia

by Pierce Conran /  KOBIZ

FyZYEIaBuvgWLSGrUSpY.jpg

Showbox’s Assassination and Finecut’s The Treacherous, both period films, have secured buyers just as the Marche du film at the Cannes Film Festival has gotten underway.

Directed by hitmaker CHOI Dong-hoon, Assassination, a colonial era tale of espionage set in Seoul and Shanghai, sold its North American rights to Well Go USA, while it was also picked up across Asia, selling to Bona Film Distribution (China), Edko Films (Hong Kong), Moviecloud (Taiwan), Dream Movies (Singapore/Malaysia), PT. Prima Cinema Multimedia (Indonesia), Coral Culture Content (Thailand) and Viva Communications (The Philippines). Notably, the picture secured these sales based on the strength of a poster, which was revealed at the Hong Kong FilMart, and the bankability of its director and stars (including Gianna JUN, HA Jung-woo and LEE Jung-jae).

The Joseon Era tale of the tyrannical King Yeonsan, The Treacherous is the new film by MIN Kyu-dong and was sold to Pretty Pictures, an indie distributor in France that also acquired the film’s Swiss pay-TV rights. Another Finecut-repped period film, LEE Won-suk’s The Royal Tailor, was also sold to Sinema TV (Turkey), Coral Culture Contents (Thailand) and Viva Entertainment (The Philippines). Finecut will be quite busy at Cannes this year, as they represent the Un Certain Regard title Madonna, by SHIN Su-won, and are also presenting rough cuts of KIM Ki-duk’s Stop and YEON Sang-ho’s Seoul Station to buyers in the market.

Assassination will hit theaters in the peak late July period while The Treacherous will debut domestically on May 21st.
