“Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae, who recently returned home with an Emmy trophy for Outstanding Lead Actor has been confirmed positive with Covid-19.

His management agency Artist Company said Tuesday that the actor took a Covid-19 test after returning home on Sept. 18 that came out positive.

According to the agency, the 50-year-old actor left Korea on Sept. 8 to attend the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards held in Los Angeles and then traveled to Canada to attend the Toronto International Film Festival to promote his directorial debut film “Hunt” — a film which he produced, wrote the script for, directed and starred in.

The agency said he came in close contact with director Hwang Dong-hyuk of “Squid Game” as well as actors from the series including Oh Young-soo, Park Hae-soo and Jung Ho-yeon. He was with actor Jung Woo-sung, Lee’s longtime best friend who also stars in “Hunt,” while in Canada. Jung was on the same flight as Lee returning home.

Jung also took a test, which came out negative, the agency said. Jung came down with Covid-19 last November but Lee had not before caught the virus.

Jung and Park also assured the fans that they tested negative.

Lee was to attend the 2022 National Brand Awards in the field of culture on Tuesday; however, director Lee Chang-dong accepted the award on behalf of Lee, who is being quarantined at home.

SEOUL, Sept. 20 (Yonhap) -- Emmy-winning actor Lee Jung-jae has tested positive for the coronavirus, his management agency said Tuesday.

"Lee received a PCR test after returning home and got a positive result," said Artist Company. "Currently, he has halted all schedules and is in self-isolation at home in accordance with guidelines from quarantine authorities."

Lee went to the United States for the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards held in Los Angeles on Sept. 11, where he became the first ever non-English speaking performer to win best drama series actor for his role in the global phenomenon "Squid Game."

Then, he participated in the Toronto International Film Festival for the North American premiere of his directorial debut "Hunt" and returned to South Korea on Sunday.

Other "Squid Game" team members Park Hae-soo and Jung Ho-yeon, who also attended the Emmy award ceremony, have tested negative for the virus. (END)

Revisiting the acting career of Lee Jung-Jae

From rebellious 'Young Man' to pitiful Gi-hun in ‘Squid Game,’ Korean star shows how an actor grows, matures in roles

“I’m not going home until I make it big.”

Just as Lee Jung-jae said through the words of Lee Han, the character in his first-ever movie gig, “The Young Man” in 1994, the now internationally acclaimed actor returned home Sunday after becoming the first Asian ever to win for best actor in a drama series at the Primetime Emmy Award last week.

A day after his win, it was confirmed that Lee’s big-screen debut will be rereleased in local theaters on Sept. 29, offering fans a peak at the early days of the “Squid Game” star.

The rerelease is not a mere attempt to cash in on Lee’s recent success, but is meant to commemorate the 40th anniversary of “The Young Man” director Bae Chang-ho’s debut. In an interview with local media, Bae reminisced on how he felt Lee epitomized the image of Generation X in Korea, as a free-spirited, ambitious young man not afraid of what other people thought of him.

Lee’s performance in the flick won him recognition for best new actor at major film award shows, including Korea’s most prestigious Grand Bell Awards and Blue Dragon Film Awards. But his reputation as a thespian with a strong presence was not won overnight, with critics often viewing him as just another pretty face on the screen.

Pretty face on quest to prove worth

While Lee made a name for himself with his screen debut in 1994's hit TV drama “Feelings,” it was his subsequent appearance in a supporting role in 1995 drama “Sandglass” that earned him nationwide fame. His portrayal as a solemn bodyguard was a sensational hit, and there were floods of petitions to urge broadcaster SBS not to kill off his character.

As Lee later admitted in interviews, his character trait as a man of few words was a directorial decision to mask his poor acting skills. The 22-year-old was baffled by the influx of accolades at the time, which he felt was not well earned.

“I was cast as a fashion model while working at a coffee shop, then I shot a chocolate commercial, and got a gig in ‘Sandglass’ and ‘The Young Man.’ All this happened within a year and I was confused,” he said later in an interview in 2013, marking his career spanning 20 years. “I didn’t know how to act but I had work to do, so I made so many mistakes. It was embarrassing and stressful, so I decided to enlist to the military.”

Still confused as to how he was able to win so many awards, Lee served his mandatory duties as noncombatant military personnel. Despite his personal doubts, Lee continued his winning streak with the critically acclaimed “City of the Rising Sun,” for which he won best actor at the Blue Dragon Film Awards and the Korean Association of Film Critics’ Awards.

He also became lifelong friends with co-star Jung Woo-sung, who would go on to work with him on several projects in the decades to come.

What followed, however, was nearly a decadelong slump in his television career, coupled with middling successes on the silver screen that were few and far between. After the success of “Squid Game,” Lee admitted in interviews that there had been times when he felt cornered, struggling between financial problems and a lack of good scripts.

Impressive acting, impressive filmography

The 2010s marked a turning point for Lee’s career, starting with his appearance in 2010 thriller “The Housemaid.” In the film directed by Im Sang-soo, Lee played the authoritative patriarch, leaving an impression on the audience while playing opposite the internationally acclaimed Jeon Do-yeon and Yoon Yeo-jeong.

Lee went continued his winning streak with heist film “The Thieves" in 2012, featuring an ensemble cast consisting of big names like Kim Yoon-seok, Kim Hye-soo, Jun Ji-hyun and Kim Soo-hyun. It became the most financially successful Korean film at the time. It still remains No. 6 on the all-time Korean box office list.
“The Thieves” director Choi Dong-hoon and co-star Jun would reunite with Lee in another smash hit film, “Assassination" in 2015. The period piece portrayed the fictional assassination attempt on Japanese military leaders during Japan’s 1910-1945 colonization of Korea.

Lee played another man caught between two worlds just two years earlier in crime-thriller “New World" in 2013, where he portrayed an undercover cop having an identity crisis while his yearslong infiltration of the biggest corporate crime syndicate in the country. Despite sharing screen time with Choi Min-sik and Hwang Jung-min, considered among the most accomplished male actors in Korea, Lee’s performance was widely praised and his presence left a lasting impression on the audience.

Lee Jung-jae in “The Face Reader” (Showbox)

Lee shined in another period piece that opened the same year, opposite Song Kang-ho -- the eventual winner of the best actor award at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival -- in “The Face Reader" in 2013 as the ambitious Prince Suyang, who overthrows his nephew, King Danjong, to ascend as king in the Joseon era.

His first appearance in the flick occurs after over an hour of buildup about the treacherous prince, and is considered one of the most memorable entrances in Korean film. Marked by the bloody corpse of an animal he had just hunted, his scarred, menacing face appears with the monologue of the titular face reader on how Suyang has the face of a traitor.

In 2017 and 2018, Lee played a minor but memorable role as the charismatic king of the underworld in the popular “Along With the Gods” trilogy, and played the menacing hit man in 2020’s “Deliver Us From Evil,” winning actor of the year at the local Asia Artist Awards.

‘Squid Game’ and beyond

Despite his series of home runs on the big screen, Lee did not really have major success on TV, save a moderate hit as the lead for “The Aide: People Make the World Go Round” on JTBC in 2019. While Lee’s career as a film actor took him to new heights in the 2010s, the aforementioned series was the only TV show that he appeared on in the decade.

That was, of course, before his unprecedented international success as the lead of “Squid Game” in 2021. He plays a debt-ridden man down on his luck who partakes in a precarious, deadly game in the show on Netflix, which was highly praised for its social satire and memorable characters, quickly becoming the platform’s most watched show ever.

The show boosted Lee to international stardom, making him the first Korean to win for outstanding performance by a male lead actor in a drama series at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, outstanding lead actor in a drama series for Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globes nomination.

Lee’s global fame also landed him the lead role for the upcoming Disney+ series “Star Wars: The Acolyte,” although information about his character or the release date has not yet been released. What has been confirmed, of course, is Lee’s return as the lead for the second season of “Squid Game,” currently slated for 2024.

At 49 years of age, the Korean movie star is now shooting for a new realm. At the Cannes Film Festival in March, Lee made his directorial debut with the espionage thriller “Hunt,” co-starring with his close friend Jung Woo-sung as rival agents in the Korean intelligence agency during the 1980s.

The film received mostly favorable reviews following its Aug. 10 release in Korea, and is now the sixth highest grossing film of the year here.

In a post-Emmys celebratory press conference for the cast of “Squid Game” on Friday, Lee said his biggest joy was that Korean content is being shared and beloved by the international audience.

“Through writing the script for ‘Hunt’ and directing it, I also am beginning to meet with the international audience with Korean content in hand. Such meeting should occur more often in the future,” he said. “I think (we) need to think about how to introduce (to the world) more Korean movies and Korean dramas.”

A year after its release, 'Squid Game' proves K-content is not a passing trend

Two years after “Parasite” rewrote the history of Korean cinema by winning four Oscars, “Squid Game” rewrote the history of Korean small screen productions by taking the Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Lead Actor awards in the drama category of this year’s Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 12 in Los Angeles.

Outstanding Directing went to "Squid Game" creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk, while Outstanding Lead Actor went to Lee Jung-jae.

The Emmy Awards, hosted by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), is one of the four major American awards for performing arts and entertainment on television and streaming platforms. The award show is divided into two parts, with the Creative Arts Emmy Awards that honors behind-the-scenes personnel, and the Primetime Emmy Awards for actors and directors.

At the Creative Arts Emmys which took place on Sept. 5 in Los Angeles, “Squid Game” garnered four awards — Outstanding Guest Actress for Lee You-mi, Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour Or More), Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Single Episode and Outstanding Stunt Performance.

This is the first time ever for a non-English drama series produced completely outside of a Western country to win multiple awards — let alone be nominated in major categories — in the Emmy's 74-year history. Foreign television productions were traditionally ineligible for the awards unless it was the result of a co-production between U.S. and foreign partners, with the intent to air on U.S. television.

Massively popular foreign productions such as French mystery series “Lupin” or Spanish caper series “Money Heist” — which still sits as one of Netflix’s 20 most-streamed series of all time — were therefore not eligible for the Primetime Emmys.

Instead, foreign series had to settle for the International Emmy Awards, a separate annual award ceremony usually presented in New York in November, since 1973.

“Truth is, not enough Primetime Emmy voters watch most foreign-language series at a level to score nominations,” American media outlet Indiewire wrote in its 2021 article titled, “Want to See Foreign Language Content at the Emmys? It’s Time to Elevate the International Emmys.”

“Designed to give recognition to international shows, they are largely ignored here in the States, but add traction in each local market.”

The traditionally strong locality of the Primetime Emmys is what makes the wins and nominations of “Squid Game” more significant, and serves as palpable proof of the cultural impact the series had across the globe.

Los Angeles city council recently designated Sept. 17, the release date of the series on Netflix, as “Squid Game Day” to commemorate the massive influence it had on American pop culture.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti praised the series’ success as “a victory in the fight to grow representation of the AAPI [Asian American and Pacific Islander] community in film and entertainment, exposing audiences to Korean culture and traditions while paving the way for other AAPI communities to also have their stories told.”

The series has not settled as a passing syndrome, but rather has become a game changer for the local content industry.

Actors shine

“What I felt as I stood on the global stage of Cannes is that cinephiles and countless fans worldwide are recognizing Korean content,” Song Kang-ho said at a press interview for Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Korean-language film “Broker,” for which he won Best Actor at this year’s Cannes. “Wherever I go, they talk about Korean films and content.”

Back in the early 2000s, Korean actors had to knock on the doorsteps of Hollywood if they wanted global recognition, which is essentially what Lee Byung-hun, Jung Ji-hoon, Kim Yun-jin and Bae Doo-na have done. Fluency in English was a must, only adding to the barrier for foreign actors hoping to debut in Hollywood.

Kim, a Korean-American actor active in both the United States and Korea, was the first Korean celebrity to star in lead roles of American television series, in “Lost” (2004-10) and “Mistresses” (2008-10).  Kim, at a press interview for Netflix Korea’s remake of “Money Heist: Korea ― Joint Economic Area” in June, said the set of the series “felt surreal” to her.  “It’s like a dream come true, to be able to work with Korean actors, writers, directors, to communicate and perform in Korean for a Korean production and have it be available for streaming worldwide,” she said.

Through the success of “Squid Game,” the beckoning of Korean acts to Hollywood has been altered: From model and actor Jung Hoyeon to veteran actor Lee Jung-jae, fresh and well-established names are being welcomed to Hollywood with open arms.

Jung, who had her screen debut with “Squid Game,” instantly shot to global stardom for her character as Kang Sae-byeok, or player No. 687, winning the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor this year.  After signing with American talent and sports agency Creative Artist Agency (CAA) in November, the actor was reported to have landed roles in Apple TV+ series “Disclaimer” directed by Mexican filmmaker Alfonso Cuaron and American film “The Governesses” by Joe Talbot.

Lee Jung-jae, the main protagonist of the series, also signed with CAA in February and was reported to have been cast as the male lead in Disney+’s Stars Wars series “The Acolyte” earlier this month.

Other players of the series, such as Oh Young-soo, Park Hae-soo, Lee You-mi, Wi Ha-jun, Heo Sung-tae, Kim Joo-ryung and Indian actor Anupam Tripathi have experienced their share of the global spotlight and began to appear more actively in other Netflix projects or drama series.

Spoiler

Diversification of genres

Netflix definitely paved the way for local content to become easily accessible worldwide, but it is not only Netflix originals, nor survival horror series similar to “Squid Game,” that are now being globally recognized.

Local content is certainly enjoying a heyday, to the point where the public is no longer surprised to see local drama series sitting atop the most popular global charts of Netflix.  Be it rom-com, thriller, action, fantasy, historical fiction or courtroom dramas — such as tvN’s “Hometown Cha-Cha-Cha” (2021) starring Kim Seon-ho and Shin Min-a, “Alchemy of Souls” (2022) starring Jung So-min and Lee Jae-wook, “Yumi’s Cells” (2021-22) starring Kim Go-eun, Ahn-bo-hyun and Park Jin-young, “Twenty Five, Twenty One” (2022) starring Kim Tae-ri and Nam Joo-hyuk, SBS’s “Business Proposal” (2022) starring Kim Se-jeong and Ahn Hyo-seop, KBS’s “The King’s Affection” (2021) and ENA’s “Extraordinary Attorney Woo” (2022) starring Kim Eun-bin — Korean series have been enjoyed far and wide by global viewers, with some series dominating Netflix charts for weeks at a time.

“The reason behind the popularity of K-content is simple: The world loves Korean films, dramas and K-pop,” Kim Ji-yeon, CEO of Siren Pictures, the production company behind “Squid Game,” said at a local press event at Westin Chosun Hotel in central Seoul on Friday, freshly back from the Emmy Awards.  “Before, [local creators] used to think only local viewers who understood Korean would watch our content. But now, there is a passageway that can connect us to the rest of the world, and viewers in other countries can enjoy [our productions] anytime they want. Through the internet, people have a better understanding of different cultures from different continents.”

Kim emphasized that securing the environment of creative freedom for local creators was the most important.  “From my experience, trying to deliberately target or create K-something, in the long run, can actually lead to a disappointing outcome,” Kim said. “It’s more important to have patience to give more opportunities for local creators and wait for their achievement, and invest in both tangible and intangible assets to provide a creative environment.”

Hwang points out the dynamicity of Korean content for its global popularity.  “BTS, ‘Parasite,’ ‘Squid Game’ and more, we’ve always tried to put our content overseas,” he said. “[The Korean economy] lived primarily off of exports, more than domestic demand for our in-house products. It’s the same for culture as well. K-pop has been targeting the global music market, and local content as well bloomed to its fullest with the fast-changing media environment. Because Korea is such an intense and dynamic society, the content that comes from within it is also dynamic and reflects society, which is why I believe Korean content has been receiving so much love and attention.”

The importance of IP

After “Squid Game” hit the jackpot that is Netflix subscribers, becoming the platform’s most-watched series after being streamed for more than 1.65 billion hours, attention gradually shifted toward its profit. The series that took $21.4 million to produce has generated $891.1 million for Netflix, according to Bloomberg’s article published last October.

How much did the cast get? One-time bonuses to compensate them for their work on the most-popular show in history on Netflix. According to the Bloomberg article “'Squid Game' Team Didn’t Get Rich From Season 1. What About Season 2?” the bonus that the cast received was less than what the stars of HBO series “Succession” get paid for one episode.

The deal with Netflix is that, while the streaming platform shoulders the entire financial responsibility of a project, they also take charge of the global distributing rights and Intellectual Property (IP) of the show it invests in.

This means that for all official merchandise related to “Squid Game” or from the upcoming reality show “Squid Game: The Challenge” based off from the series — none of the creators or local production company will get a hand in the profit.

Lee Sang-baek, CEO of the local production company Astory behind the hit “Extraordinary Attorney Woo,” said at a local press conference of Broadcast World Wide (BCWW 2022) in August that the primary reason why he decided to air the series on newly-found cable channel ENA was so that he could have the sole rights to the IP. Astory is also behind Netflix’s zombie horror hit “Kingdom” (2019-), written by Kim Eun-hee.

“After ‘Kingdom,’ my longing to go overseas with local content grew," Lee said. "Netflix proposed to have ‘Extraordinary Attorney Woo’ made as its original series, but I turned it down and only decided to sell distribution rights. I chose ENA because we could preserve the show’s IP, even though the channel was newer. The only way production companies can survive lies in holding the IP rights.”

“Extraordinary Attorney Woo,” which topped Netflix’s global weekly charts for weeks all throughout its airing, is being made into a webtoon, and will eventually be adapted into a musical as well. Lee also revealed at the event that the show is also up for a remake, proposed by numerous companies from the United States, Japan, China, Turkey, the Philippines and Germany.

“We are still in the works on the details [of the remake] from other production companies, and Astory will actively partake in the production of any remakes as well,” Lee said.

According to Kim, the contract for Season 2 of “Squid Game” was a better deal than for Season 1.

“We cannot reveal the specifics of the contract for Season 2, but we believe it’s a good deal,” Kim said. “The rights over the show’s IP is a newfound paradigm between the person financing the show and the show’s creator […] which is why it has become more important for production companies to have power and influence over their capital. Currently, the size and capacity of local production companies are small [compared to overseas], and if private and government-led organizations can support them, companies would have more power as they gain their own capital.”

Squid Game star Lee Jung Jae to launch directorial debut Hunt at LEAFF after Emmys success

Emmy award-winning Squid Game actor Lee Jung Jae will be in London making his directorial debut at the London East Asia Film Festival (LEAFF) in October for the UK premiere of his new film Hunt.

The film made its global debut at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, with early reviewers calling it ‘sleek and serious, burnished and brutal’, and it became the fifth-highest-grossing film of the year to date in South Korea.

The veteran South Korean actor is directing and starring in the 1980s thriller, which centres around a spy who is tasked with unearthing an espionage plot in the country’s government agency.

Set against a backdrop of political and military tension between North and South Korea, Jung Jae also stars in the role as Foreign Unit chief Park Pyong-ho at the Korean Central Intelligence Agency (an early iteration of the South Korean secret service).

His search for a mole lands him in the middle of an assassination plot, and what follows is an urgent struggle amid blood-soaked action sequences.

Though Jung Jae is a seasoned and talented actor with a lucrative list of films under his belt, it is his role in the tense Netflix survival drama Squid Game, where he played the main character Seong Gi-hun, that catapulted him to the global sphere.

The Hunt will premiere in London next month

To call Squid Game, created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, a cultural world phenomenon would be an understatement.

Within 10 days of dropping on Netflix, it became the platform’s highest-ranking show in 90 countries. Millions of viewers were from outside of Korea – in fact, most were international viewers – giving the ‘Korean Wave’ of the 1990s, characterised by the global popularity of South Korean culture, a new burst of energy.

It is a series that took a simple schoolyard game in Korea and brought it across the world, with a macabre, social commentary twist.

People in England, in the US, across Latin America, Europe and the Middle East found themselves playing the childhood Korean game; the soundtrack for the Netflix show became TikTok viral sounds and made their way across social media; scenes from the show were given the meme treatment and celebrities, including Trevor Noah, got in on the cultural moment.

The success of the show was reflected in the award space, too, and Jung Jae made acting history after becoming the first person from a foreign-language show to win best actor in a drama at the Emmys. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk won the prize for outstanding directing for a drama series.

And Jung Jae’s mark on the world stage is only beginning. Earlier this month it was revealed that the 49-year-old has been cast as the male lead in the new Disney Plus Star Wars series The Acolyte from Lucasfilm.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, LEAFF film festival founder and director Hyejung Jeon, said: ‘The fact that everyone empathises with Lee Jung-Jae’s acting in Squid Game is confirmation of the tremendous sense of community in the present day.

‘His performance, which created a common code – the world sharing the same emotions, proves that he is an actor with great strengths, not only limited to Korea.

‘That is why we wished to focus on his career and dedicate a strand to him. We are so glad he was recognised by so many institutions (including the Emmys).

‘This year, LEAFF’s overarching theme is utopia and dystopia, which is something we can all imagine living in the present day. In that sense, the invitation of actor/director Lee Jung-Jae is expressing a message – to experience and dream with the global audience in the present day which is what LEAFF strive for.’

'Squid Game' selected as Rolling Stone’s Greatest 100 TV Shows

By hoho@donga.com | September. 28, 2022 07:38

Netflix’s Korean drama “Squid Game,” which won six Emmys this month, was named “100 Greatest TV Programs” by Rolling Stone. The magazine announced on Monday (local time) that “The Squid Game” was ranked 95 out of the 100 greatest TV shows of all time.

"’Squid Game’ is the newest and only non-English show among the works on this list. It symbolizes content barriers being broken down in the online streaming era,” the U.S. popular culture magazine said. "It's a captivating thriller and ruthless socio-economic satire about a death race using children's play for huge prize money. It’s a great showcase for Lee Jung-jae, who won the Emmy Award for Best Actor.”

In 2016, Rolling Stone also selected “the 100 Greatest TV Shows.” This time, 100 new shows were selected after consulting with actors, drama officials, critics, etc. The first place was taken by a timeless masterpiece, “The Sopranos” (1999-2007), which deals with the life of a mafia family in the United States, and the second place went to the animation series “The Simpson's (The Simpson Family in Korea),” which aired season 1 in 1989 and has been loved globally for over 30 years. In the third place, a show, “Breaking Bad” (2008-2013), which deals with the drug trade of a high school teacher with a short life to live, was selected. A lot of over-the-top (OTT) works such as “The Crown” and “Squid Game” were included on the list.

The 100 Greatest TV Shows of All Time

A ranking of the most game-changing, side-splitting, tear-jerking, mind-blowing, world-building, genre-busting programs in television history, from the medium’s inception in the early 20th century through the ever-metastasizing era of Peak TV

The newest show on this list, and the only non-English one, Squid Game is emblematic of the way the streaming era has broken down content borders, so that your new obsession can just as easily be an Israeli drama about an Orthodox Jewish man who falls in love with a widow as it can be the latest Disney+ Marvel series. But beyond what it represents for the TV business, Squid Game — in which a group of financially desperate South Koreans compete in a deadly series of children’s playground contests with a huge winner-takes-all cash prize — is a gripping thriller, a ruthless socioeconomic satire, and a great showcase for actors like Emmy winner Lee Jung-jae.

^ No, it is not true.  Vogue Korea admitted that their article (in 2013) was distorted and not based on the truth.  You can read about some info here: https://www.resetera.com/threads/lee-jung-jae-squid-game-found-to-have-apparently-assaulted-someone-twice-and-had-2-dui’s.629824/post-92918512

Mirovision

Fans of Lee Jung-jae will get a chance to see the “Squid Game” star in his earliest starring role, as a manipulative male model in 1994’s “The Young Man.”

Korean indie distributor and sales agent Mirovision has added the 1994 picture to its sales lineup at the Asian Contents & Film Market, on the sidelines of the Busan International Film Festival.

Set in Seoul’s Rodeo Drive district, the film sees Lee play a model trying to break into commercials. After he accidentally kills an agent and dumps the body in a river, he has to turn up the charm to get away with the slaying. The role earned him best new actor awards from four organizations.

Lee is currently in huge demand. In addition to his breakout role in “Squid Game” and the Primetime Emmy Award that he collected for his performance, Lee has recently established his credentials as a film director. His “Hunt” premiered in Cannes in May and went on to head the Korean box office for three weeks. The popular picture has grossed $31.5 million to date.

Nostalgia aside, Mirovision’s Busan lineup consists principally of films that will hit screens later this year and in 2023, and play out across the drama, romance, comedy, horror, thriller, fantasy and action genres.
Currently in post-production “Love Chemistry” is a romantic comedy about a miraculous perfume that turns men into magnets for women. Trouble follows when the characters attempt to figure out the perfume’s mystery. The picture is directed by Lim Sung Yong. It stars Seol In-ah (“Emergency Declaration” and TV’s “Business Proposal”) and Yoon Si-yoon (TV’s “Bread, Love and Dreams”).

Set for a 2023 release, “Honest People” sees a successful writer of other people’s resumes unexpectedly receive a complaint. “Flowers of Mold” kicks off with a betrayed woman rummaging through her neighbors’ trash to try and find a sense of closeness to other people. In “Skip,” a sports star gets hurt by someone she trusted and tries to get back on her feet. Mirovision’s “Immortals,” is a mockumentary about the ‘ageless disease’ Koreans exposed to the Hiroshima atomic bomb live with. “Weed People” set a man on a journey in search of Korea’s cannabis farmers. In “Move To Mind” a girl with an incurable disease puts her life at risk after deciding that love and dreams are what matters most.

How Much Will Lee Jung Jae Get Paid Per Episode of ‘Squid Game’ Season 2?

According to reports, Lee Jung Jae will be paid $697K per episode for Squid Game Season 2.

TV Daily reported that the actor will begin shooting the sequel next year and his new per-episode salary will be around $697K. If the second season gets nine episodes like the first one, he will be making a total of around $6.3 million for shooting the whole season. Moreover, the exec producer of the series, Hwang Dong Hyuk, has reportedly received a bonus compensation for the success of the series and continuing his series on the platform.

Reports say that the Squid Game production team and Netflix had a lengthy discussion on the production costs and incentives related to the show’s sequel as its first season gained sensational popularity worldwide. Although the South Korean series was a huge success, the production team was not able to receive any additional incentives or profits due to the exclusive contract they had signed with Netflix. However, the two reportedly agreed to revise the terms of acquisition, with season 2 being announced.

The production cost for Squid Game 2 is estimated to be $69.7 million, excluding the appearance fees of all major stars in the series. However, the cost is projected to rise with global premieres and promotional events to be scheduled ahead of its release.

Later on the day, a representative from Cyron Pictures shared, “Squid Game Season 2 is still in the works. Everything, including Lee Jung Jae’s payroll, has not been finalized yet.”

HUNT 헌트

SQUID GAME superstar Lee Jung-jae makes his directing debut with this 1980s-set thriller, in which he also plays an intelligence chief who uncovers a plot to assassinate the president of South Korea while hunting for a mole within his own agency. Korean superstar Jung Woo-sung co-stars as a fellow agent also trying to smoke out a mole.

Following a failed assassination attempt on South Korean President Chun Doo-hwan, KCIA Foreign Unit chief Park (Lee) and Domestic Unit head Kim (Jung) are charged with the task of identifying the conspirators. The men share a fraught history — some years ago, Kim subjected Park to an interrogation that left him with permanent nerve damage — and each suspects the other of being a double agent. While the rivals search for incriminating evidence against each other, their investigation leads them to a shadowy figure, codenamed Donglim, who appears to have infiltrated the agency. Uncovering Donglim’s true identity will keep the men tethered together and set them on a path involving shootouts, car chases, and much bloodshed.

HUNT plunges the viewer into a labyrinth of secrets where nothing is quite what it seems. The result is one of the most impressive action movies in years.
