S. Korean crime thriller sold to 56 overseas markets

SEOUL, Aug. 14 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean crime thriller "Deliver Us From Evil" has been sold to more than 50 overseas markets, according to its distributor on Friday.

The film, which has topped the local box office since its release on Aug. 5, was sold to 56 countries and territories, including the United States, Germany, Taiwan and Hong Kong, according to CJ Entertainment.

With the movie hitting Taiwanese screens this Wednesday, the distributor said it is in talks with its counterparts to fix the release date in each country.

Starring Hwang Jung-min and Lee Jung-jae, the crime action film has attracted 2.7 million moviegoers in South Korea as of Thursday, with a total revenue of 23.4 billion won (US$19.7 million).

 

Directed by Hong Won-chan, the film follows the story of an assassin, played by Hwang, who becomes embroiled in unexpected incidents as a mysterious killer, played by Lee, pursues him to avenge his dead brother.

[ KOFIC ] LEE Jung-jae is an actor who hardly opens up himself. A rare display of emotions may become a critical drawback to an actor. But that is not the case for him. He turns his weakness to an incomparable strength. He has an indifferent look on his face but unveils an inner wound that runs deep at heart. Strangely enough, his unemotional face makes a good fodder for romanticism. His romantic image has extended from a TV drama, <Sand Glass>, to films such as <An Affair> portraying a love affair with his fiancée’s elder sister ([LEE Mi-sook] ), <Asako in Ruby Shoes> where his character fell for a Japanese woman ([Tachibana Misato]) that he met just online, <Il Mare> where he costarred with [Gianna Jun] and portrayed love unbounded by time and space, <Interview> that asked endless questions over love, <Over the Rainbow> which rediscovered the forgotten first love. All of his characters are as charming as a face on TV commercials. LEE never loses his usual coolness even when he punctuates his career once in a while with self-destructive characters. His major movie roles include <City of the Rising Sun>, <The Last Witness>, <Oh! Brothers> and <Typhoon>. After a brief outing to the TV screens, he returned to the film sector with his role as a macho man in <The Housemaid> who cheated on his wife and seduced his housemaid. LEE’s image began to change in 2012, as he appeared in a charismatic turn in the smash hit <The Thieves>. He drew even more notice in 2013 for his leading role in the well-reviewed gangster saga <New World> and for his scene-stealing supporting role in the period hit <The Face Reader>, which earned him many industry awards. 2014 saw him take on the role of an MMA fighter who must go on the run as he is forced to participate in a dangerous game show when his brother is kidnapped in the film <Big Match>. 'Deliver Us From Evil' breaks even after 12 days

SEOUL, Aug. 17 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean thriller "Deliver Us From Evil" has reached its break-even point in 12 days despite the new coronavirus pandemic that has hampered local cinemas.

Some 841,000 people watched the film between Aug. 14 and 16 alone, raising the total number of viewers to 3.54 million, according to the data by the Korean Film Council. The film's break-even point is 3.5 million.

In addition to reaching its break-even point, the crime action film is set to outpace summer blockbusters that hit theaters earlier, such as zombie blockbuster "Peninsula" that has attracted 3.78 million since its release on July 15.

Starring Hwang Jung-min and Lee Jung-jae and directed by Hong Won-chan, the film follows the story of an assassin, played by Hwang, who finds himself mired in unexpected incidents as a mysterious killer, played by Lee, pursues him to avenge his dead brother.

Korea Box Office: ‘Deliver Us From Evil’ Holds on for $26 Million Total

Holdover title “Deliver Us From Evil” once again topped the Korean box office, over the weekend. It earned $6.74 million for a cumulative of $26.5 million after just 11 days on release.

The hitman on a last job thriller managed a strong hold, losing only 37% in its second weekend, compared with $10.6 million on its debut. It held on to a 51% market share. Its trajectory should see “Deliver” overtake “Peninsula,” until now the biggest post-coronavirus title, within a couple of days.

New release title, “OK! Madam,” a comedy starring Uhm Jeong-hwa, opened in second place with a $4.57 million haul. It played on 1,288 screens and accounted for 35% of the weekend box office.

“Steel Rain: Summit” which had played as the top film three weeks ago, was a distant third. It managed $619,000, a drop of 58% compared with last weekend. Its cumulative is now $11.9 million.

Overall, the aggregate weekend score was little changed at $13 million, compared with $13.4 million the previous session. That may reflect the limited new releases on offer as much as the ever-changing virus conditions.

In response to the discovery of a new virus hotspot, Seoul city authorities on Saturday raised their hazard warning to Level 2. While cinemas were not specifically mentioned in the directive, they are likely to be affected by the regulation which means that all private and public indoor meetings of 50 or more and outdoor meetings of over 100 will be banned. Seoul typically represents 35-40% of Korea’s national box office.

“Peninsula” held fourth place with $331,000, advancing its cumulative total to $27.6 million since its July 15 release. In fifth, was newly released Ukrainian animation title “The Stolen Princess,” with an opening score of $213,000.

'Evil' beats 'Peninsula' to become most watched summer film of 2020

SEOUL, Aug. 20 (Yonhap) -- The South Korean action thriller "Deliver Us From Evil" has emerged as the most-watched film at the country's box office this summer, outpacing the performance of homegrown zombie apocalypse movie "Peninsula," data showed Thursday.

The number of combined viewers for "Evil," starring Hwang Jung-min and Lee Jung-jae, reached 3.87 million as of early Wednesday, surpassing the 3.79 million aggregate tally for "Peninsula," according to the data by the Korean Film Council.

For the entire year to-date, "The Man Standing Next," starring Lee Byung-hun, remains the top grossing movie, with 4.75 million combined viewers from its theatrical release in January.

Meanwhile, "Peninsula" is set to open in the United States on Friday (local time) in a limited release in 126 theaters across the country, including on 59 IMAX screens. The film will open under the title "Train To Busan Presents: Peninsula" in the U.S.

According to its South Korean distributor NEW, "Peninsula," the sequel to director Yeon Sang-ho's 2016 smash hit "Train To Busan," has grossed over US$50 million at the global box office since its first release in Korea in mid-July.

CGV stops ticket sales to cut seating capacity on tightened social distancing

SEOUL, Aug. 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's multiplex chain GGV said Wednesday that it has suspended its ticket booking service to reduce seating capacities at screenings as part of precautionary measures against the spread of COVID-19.

From Tuesday, CGV, a movie theater operating unit of entertainment giant CJ Group, started to sell tickets for the upcoming Hollywood blockbuster film "Tenet," set to be released next Wednesday.

Nearly all available tickets for IMAX theaters had been sold out as of early Wednesday, according to CGV. The company has put about 70 percent of the seats on sale.

But following tightened social distancing guidelines placed on the greater Seoul region, CGV decided to lower seating capacities down to 50 percent, suspending its ticket booking service.

As a result, pre-sold tickets of "Tenet" for IMAX theaters were canceled and refunded, with CGV asking customers to reserve tickets again under the new seating arrangements.

Customers who have bought tickets for other movies of which booked seating capacities remain below 50 percent will be assigned new seating numbers, CGV said.

The move came as Seoul and the surrounding regions have reported hundreds of new daily COVID-19 cases for days, leading quarantine authorities to strengthen social distancing.

The recent spike in cases of the highly infectious virus has stoked a sense of foreboding within the film industry, which was hit hard by the new coronavirus this past spring.

The number of moviegoers hit rock bottom in April with an all-time low of 970,000, while dozens of homegrown and foreign movies delayed their release schedules.

Thanks to summer blockbusters, such as the zombie action adventure "Peninsula," however, total admissions rose for three straight months to reach 5.62 million in July.

But with the number of new virus cases growing fast, the recent upward momentum may end up short-lived. On Tuesday, theaters across the country drew some 140,000 moviegoers, down sharply from the 400,000 figure for Monday, according to box office data.

Jung Woo Sung will play Kim Jung Do, Park Pyung Ho’s partner and a rival. Following the re-surge in COVID-19, Netflix decided to put a stop on the production of all Korean content.

On August 21, Netflix announced that they have decided to halt all Korean content currently under production.

“Netflix has decided to suspend all content production schedules for the time being for the sake of government recommendations for public safety and the safety of all staff participating in the production of Korean content.

Although the progress of the production will be affected depending on the future situations, we will decide to resume the production by considering the safety of the creators and the production team as a top priority.”

As a result, all Netflix’s Korean content, including Round Six (starring Lee Jung Jae and Park Hae Soo) and All of Us Are Dead, will come to a stop. An official added, “All content currently in production or preparing for production has been suspended.”

Hardboiled Action Flick Draws over 4 Million Moviegoers

"Deliver Us from Evil" drew over 4 million viewers in less than a month since its release early this month. The feat is considered remarkable amid the coronavirus epidemic.

According to the Korean Film Council, the action flick has become the first film to attract more than 4 million moviegoers so far this year since "The Man Standing Next," which was released in January.

The film, packed with hardboiled action and relentless chase scenes, has drawn much attention as it reunites actors Hwang Jung-min and Lee Jung-jae for the first time since their 2013 hit "New World." Hwang plays a hit man, and Lee chases him all the way to Thailand to avenge his brother's death.

According to the Korean Film Commission’s records, “Deliver Us From Evil” surpassed 4 million moviegoers on August 22 at 1:30 p.m. KST. This is the first time in 2020 since the film “The Man Standing Next” (which was released in January and reached the milestone in February) that a film has surpassed 4 million moviegoers at the box office.

 

The cast thanked moviegoers for helping their film achieve the milestone. Hwang Jung Min, who is filming a new movie in Jordan, said, “I really wanted to say that I am sincerely grateful.” Lee Jung Jae said, “4 million people came to see our movie. Thank you very much.” Park Jung Min said, “It is thanks to the moviegoers that our film could receive so much love and that theaters can continue to show films. It is an honor and I am deeply grateful. I hope that everyone stays healthy and that Korean films continue to receive a lot of love.”

 

Despite movie theaters being impacted by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, “Deliver Us From Evil” reached 1 million moviegoers in just four days, became the fastest Korean film this summer to reach 2 million moviegoers, and surpassed the 3 million milestone faster than previous hit action films “The Outlaws” and “Believer.”

Crime-action movie "Deliver Us From Evil" has topped the local box office for 20 days as of Monday, according to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC). 

The council said the movie attracted 30,408 filmgoers on Monday, outdoing the comedy-action film "Okay! Madam" (15,368) and the Japanese anime movie "Crayon Shin-chan: Honeymoon Hurricane ― The Lost Hiroshi ―" (5,780).

But daily box office sales were only 63,788, largely due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) flare-up in Korea. 

Since Deliver Us From Evil hit local theaters on Aug. 5, it has sold more than 4.13 million tickets as of Monday. It is the year's second movie to draw an audience of more than 4 million after "The Man Standing Next" reached the milestone on Feb. 1. 

The film follows the story of hitman In-nam ― played by Hwang Jung-min ― who is chased by villain Ray ― played by Lee Jung-jae. The pair co-starred in the 2013 hit crime drama "New World."

Hong Won-chan, who was behind the success of the thriller "Office" (2014), directed the movie.

While the 41st Blue Dragon Film Awards announced the final nominees for the awards, fierce competitions are expected.

 

The upcoming Blue Dragon Film Awards, scheduled to be held on December 11, will present a total of 18 awards.  Today, 15 categories announced the nominations (the rest three are Popularity Award, Best Short Film, and Most viewed Picture) selected through a survey of film industry experts and ordinary moviegoers about Korean films that were released between October 11, 2019, and October 29, 2020.

 

The Man Standing Next was nominated in a total of 10 categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Screenplay, while Deliver Us From Evil was spotted in 8 different categories.  Moonlit Winter and Kim Ji Young, Born 1982 were each nominated in 7 and 6 categories.

[KOREA Box Office] Movies that Have Surpassed Break-Even Points This Year

The days when the “10 million viewers” movies were born are now in the past. With the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic from February, the number of moviegoers visiting the theater dropped sharply. Let alone the box office hit, movies that surpassed the break-even points are hard to find.

 

Last year, five movies drew 10 million audience, but this year, there is not a single movie that recorded more than 5 million admissions. So far, there are only 8 movies that have surpassed the break-even points. And considering the fact that the pandemic is still ongoing, it’s pretty impressive.

The first movie to break its break-even point was Hitman: Agent Jun, starring Kwon Sang Woo. Its break-even point stood at 2.4 million, which the movie reached on February 17. The second movie to exceed its break-even point was The Man Standing Next. The break-even point was initially estimated at 5 million moviegoers, but the final number stood at 4.75 million. However, it is rumored that the company has actually surpassed the break-even point by earning higher-than-expected in the secondary market. The third film is Honest Candidate, a comedy film starring Ra Mi Ran. The movie attracted a total of 1.52 million moviegoers, and the break-even point was 1.5 million.

As the number of COVID-19 confirmed patients skyrocketed in March, the number of moviegoers was frighteningly decreased, and the fourth movie that surpassed its break-even point came out in summer. #ALIVE, starring Park Shin Hye and Yoo Ah In, originally had the break-even point of 2.2 million admissions, but it fell to 1.96 million after making higher-than-expected sales in the VOD market. The final score for the movie was 1,903,727 viewers.

 

Peninsula, which was released in July, then surpassed the break-even point of 2.5 million.  Initially, the break-even point was estimated to be around 6 million, but it was reduced to 2.5 million after making a great profit in pre-sales. The movie attracted 3.81 million moviegoers. Deliver Us From Evil, which has a break-even point of 3.5 million, was released when the spread of COVID-19 dialed down a bit and recorded 4.35 million admissions in the end. With the R-rated Final Cut version released in October, the movie attracted 35,000 viewers.

 

The low-budget film Voice of Silence, starring Yoo Ah In and Yoo Jae Myung, also surpassed its break-even point. It totaled 400,000 audience, which is higher than the break-even point of 350,000. The most recent film that surpassed its break-even point is Pawn, a movie released in the Chuseok season. On November 9, more than a month after its release, the movie broke its break-even point of 1.7 million.  Since Pawn, Samjin Company English Class and Collectors kept up their pace and attracted more than 1 million viewers. Attention is focusing on whether the two films, which were released during these difficult times, can break their break-even points.

The two’s chemistry completes a desperate and deadly chase heading towards a catastrophe.

The Korean New Wave started a boom in domestic cinema during the late 1990s and early 2000s. It was partly instigated by the phenomenal success of the action thriller Shiri at the local box office in 1999.

 

Before the New Wave, South Korea did not have a home-grown commercial cinema of note, and viewers preferred to watch Hollywood films in cinemas and follow American stars.

 

The box office success of Shiri, which was released in 1999, opened the way for a blossoming of commercial films, and introduced the term “Korean blockbuster”, which came to describe big-budget – for Korea – crowd-pleasing movies like Silmido, Friend and Taegukgi, films which quickly smashed box office records in the country.

 

Audiences who had generally been indifferent to Korean films turned out in force to see such movies, and they were supported by critical acclaim. Korean films became lucrative as a result, and investment poured in. This boosted the careers of a group of directors including Park Chan-wook, E J-yong and Kim Ki-duk, some of whom had already seen success in the late 1990s, and led to the production of a wide range of films that spanned genres.

The film boom meant that talent was needed in front of the cameras, and this led to the establishment of a star system, with stars like Choi Min-sik not only matching, but replacing, US stars as fan favourites. In terms of adulation, the movie stars of the period were a precursor of today’s K-pop stars.

 

The effects of the New Wave were felt in the art-house sector as well as the commercial sector. A peculiar characteristic of Korean New Wave films was that some were commercial enough to play in cinemas at home but interesting enough to intrigue the foreign art-house audiences at film festivals.

 

Korean art house films had provoked quiet interest at festivals since the early 1990s, with the works of filmmakers like Park Kwang-su (To the Starry Island) and the country’s towering directorial genius, Im Kwon-taek (Sopyonje and around a hundred others), but they were generally regarded as marginal entries.

 

Commercially oriented films like E J-Yong’s An Affair had also pleased audiences at specialised Asian film festivals like Italy’s Udine Far East Film Festival.

 

But in the 2000s, Korean films became the “in thing” at international festivals, and achieved high-profile showings at major festivals like Cannes and Venice.

The success of the Korean New Wave primed international audiences for hallyu, the pop-cultural phenomenon that saw Korean television shows and musical acts become popular at first in Asia, and then all over the world.

 

What was so special about Shiri?

 

A quick answer to that would be the box office. Shiri, directed by Jacky Kang Je-gyu, was produced on a budget of around US$5 million but took US$26 million at the box office. Six million people in South Korea went to see it, with 2.4 million of those coming from Seoul. It topped the year-end charts as Korea’s highest-ever grossing film at the time.

 

In terms of plot, story and direction, Shiri – a mixture of espionage, romance and action – was little more than a competently staged action film. But it touched a chord with Korean viewers.

 

Korean audiences loved the fact Shiri looked as slick as an American film, and its accomplishments, both in technical and box success terms, evoked a sense of national pride. Koreans suddenly felt that their films could compete with those from the US, and proud audiences flocked to show their support.

Shiri’s story revolves around an undercover North Korean agent who falls in love with the South Korean agent who is trying to capture her.

 

The movie was groundbreaking in the way that it depicted a North Korean communist as a sensitive human being – a romantic lead, no less, albeit a murderous one. North Koreans had previously been depicted as evil communist stereotypes in South Korean popular culture.

 

Released during the time of the South’s Sunshine Policy, Shiri played into an optimism that a rapport could be achieved between the South and the North, an idea that was taken further and clarified in Park Chan-wook’s Joint Security Area.

 

What other New Wave films are important?

 

Korea had produced a number of lower-budget commercial films like the romantic The Contact before Shiri. These films, which were generally well received at home, paved the way for the post-Shiri surge. A small coterie of international critics, notably Variety’s Asian film expert Derek Elley, had already begun to comment on the slick and professional qualities such films displayed, and had written about them in the Western press.

 

Critics at home and abroad were quick to identify a new style of Korean film, noting strong commercial appeal and the directors’ propensity to mix genres – for instance, combining horror with a high school drama, or gangsters with comedy. The films also made use of tight narrative structures reminiscent of American movies, even though they were uniquely Korean in content and attitude.

 

Below are some of the New Wave films that created waves.

An Affair (1998)

 

Falling somewhere between a doomed romance in the manner of Douglas Sirk and a weepy television drama, An Affair marked the debut of director E J-Yong and the breakthrough of leading man Lee Jung-jae.

 

Veteran actress Lee Mi-sook plays a woman who falls in love with her younger sister’s dishy fiancé. The way the woman courageously takes control of her own destiny struck a chord with female viewers at home.

 

Christmas in August (1998)

Director Hur Jin-ho stood slightly outside the nascent New Wave scene, and this touching – and, of course, tragic – romance was considered a bit different at the time. Full of sensitivity, and compared to Francois Truffaut films by critics, it has been an enduringly popular film and has gained a cult-like following. The movie set actor Han Suk-kyu on the road to becoming a big star.

 

Peppermint Candy (1999)

Perhaps the best work by novelist-turned director Lee Chang-dong, this unrelenting drama shows how peer pressure and indoctrination can pervert even the most sensitive soul. The acting by Sol Kyung-gu and Lee’s direction are superb. One of the best Korean films of the 1990s.

 

Happy End (1999)

Brutal violence played a part in many Korean New Wave films, and it provided the twist in this movie by Jung Ji-woo, which begins as a typical romance before heading into psychodrama territory.

 

Lies (1999)

Art-house director Jang Sung-woo’s story about a sadomasochistic relationship between an older man and a young girl fails on all levels, but its racy subject matter still made it a talking point among critics and audiences when it premiered at the Busan International Film Festival.

 

The director was praised for challenging conservative sexual norms, showing the risk-taking approach of some of the New Wavers.

 

Il Mare (2000)

 

A cute romance seemingly influenced by the work of Japanese director Shunji Iwai, Il Mare tells of two lovers who communicate across time via letters posted in an old postbox. Tragedy ensues, of course.

 

The movie brought actress and former model Jun Ji-hyun to the attention of movie audiences, and shows the tone of the lighter efforts of the New Wave. It was popular enough to spawn a Hollywood remake.

 

Joint Security Area (2000)

Park Chan-wook’s film deals with the friendship that arises between two South Korean border guards and their counterparts in North Korea.

 

A well-judged drama that develops into a fully-fledged tragedy, the movie dared to say that, beneath the politics, communist citizens from the North weren’t any different to those from the South. Another box-office smash in Korea.

 

Friend (2001)

This big-budget gangster/coming-of-age drama owed a debt to Hong Kong gangster films, yakuza films, and Martin Scorsese’s work, and its potent mixture of harsh violence and sentimentality are common characteristics of the Korean New Wave.

 

By the time Friend was released, audiences were judging Korean films as “well made”, something that reflected the public’s feelings about Korean-made products in general.

 

My Sassy Girl (2001)

Jun Ji-hyun, in her breakout film, plays a gutsy young girl who puts an admirer in the shape of Chae Tae-hyun through his paces in a romantic comedy which pushes all the right buttons. The character’s independent spirit played well with female audiences.

 

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance (2002)

Uncompromising to the point of nastiness, this unpleasant sortie through some warped minds wasn’t much liked in Korea due to the excessive violence.

 

Director Park Chan-wook refined the revenge theme for his masterpiece Oldboy here. New Wave actress Bae Doona gives a typically idiosyncratic performance.

Jacky Kang Je-gyu’s blockbusting follow up to Shiri showed how the New Wave directors used the Korean war as a backdrop for spectacular entertainment rather than political propaganda, appealing to a younger generation of viewers who had not lived through it.

 

Viewers also admired the high-class production values.

 

How did the films become so successful internationally?

 

Cinematic new waves must be genuine outpourings of talent to succeed and sustain themselves, and that was certainly true of the Korean New Wave. But matters were helped internationally by a skilful publicity organisation in the form of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) and a powerful way of disseminating information, in the form of the newly established Busan (then called Pusan) International Film Festival.

 

KOFIC acted as a one-stop shop for those interested in Korean films at festivals, and instead of just focusing on foreign distributors, it actively courted international film critics.

Busan quickly became the venue to promote Korean films, and foreign critics were treated like royalty in its first years – they were provided with their own personal full-time guides to the city and given unlimited access to the filmmakers.

 

The openness and efficiency of the two organisations played a major part in disseminating news of the new cinematic wave abroad. The rest, as they say, is history.

It’s been a while since the star-packed roster became a new trend in Korean cinema. Unlike how one or two stars led the plot, now, several actors imprint their individualities and fill the play more richly and colorfully. From the audiences’ point of view, we can enjoy both the pleasure of seeing “star actors” and the fun of watching a movie. Let’s check out a total of 8 films, ranging from movies that showed rather disappointing results to movies that became a box office hit.

 

Beasts Clawing at Straws (2019)

Based on Keisuke Son’s novel, the movie is about the characters in desperate situations and their clashes surrounding a questionable money bag. It is a crime drama with a black comedy about a group of people blinded by desire and become hardened to blood or tears. Jeon Do Yeon, Jung Woo Sung, Youn Yuh Jung, Bae Seong Woo, Jin Kyung, Jung Man Sik, Shin Hyun Bin and Jung Ga Ram paint a terrible irony of clashing into unexpected situations as they try to seize the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

 

1987: When the Day Comes (2017)

Set in 1987, the film captures the chain of events that led up to a huge roar triggered by the death of a student protester. It is based on the true story of the unlawful interrogation and death of a student activist named Park Jong Chul that ultimately prompted the June Democratic Uprising in Korea, and starts as a cold thriller and heads towards a heart-breaking story. And the actors who took part in filmizing the critical event in modern history are simply outstanding. With Kim Yoon Seok, who turned into a ruthless commissioner Park Cheo Won, in the center, Ha Jung Woo, Yoo Hae Jin, Kim Tae Ri, Park Hee Soon, Lee Hee Joon, Jo Woo Jin, Sol Kyung Gu, Gang Dong Won and Moon So Ri (in voice only) vividly performed the moment of 1987 as if they were running a relay.

 

Juror 8 (2018)

The movie was inspired by South Korea’s first jury trial. The story of ordinary people being chosen as jurors and seek out the truth of a murder case through evidence, testimony, and confessions is unfolded quite speedily. Moon So Ri plays a presiding judge who always goes by the book, while Park Hyung Sik becomes a jury number 8 and drives the nation’s first jury trial into an unexpected direction with 7 other jurors played by Yoon Gyung Ho, Kim Hong Pa, Jo Han Chul, Kim Mi Kyung, Seo Jeong Yeon, Baek Soo Jang, Cho Soo Hyang.

 

The Thieves (2012)

This movie follows Korean and Chinese professional thieves joining forces to pinch a $20 million diamond from an impenetrable casino vault. Directed by The Big Swindle and Tazza: The High Rollers director Choi Dong Hoon, this slick caper flick unfolds a thrilling drama with colorful attractions of conspiracy, betrayal and mixed desires in the colorful criminal world. And the cast lineup certainly wields its dignity. From Kim Yoon Seok and Kim Hye Soo, who worked with Director Choi in his previous project, to Lee Jung Jae, Jun Ji Hyun, Kim Soo Hyun, Kim Hae Sook, Simon Yam, Angelica Lee and Kwok Cheung Tsang transform into characteristic thieves.

 

The Face Reader (2013)

During the Joseon period, when the King’s position is at stake, a disgraced nobleman with a gift for reading faces becomes enmeshed in a power struggle as he tries to alter the fate of Joseon. It combines Korean fortune-telling traditions of reading faces with historical events to create an intriguing story. Along with its unique narrative, the cast packed with A-list stars made headlines. Song Kang Ho and Lee Jong Suk become father and son, and on top of that, Jo Jung Suk joins as brother-in-law, adding to the fun. Lee Jung Jae, Kim Hye Soo and Baek Yoon Sik each play ambitious Grand Prince Suyang, entrancing gisaeng (Joseon’s courtesan) Yun Hong, and Kim Jongseo who has to protect the young King, and take part in dragging Nae Gyeong (Song Kang Ho) into a power struggle.

 

Secret Zoo (2019)

The story begins when a lawyer who is stuck in a dead-end temp position is given a special job to revitalize a failing zoo. The absurd plot of a lawyer and zookeepers disguise themselves as animals and experience wildlife on the other side of the fence in order to save an endangered zoo is unraveled with cute humor. Ahn Jae Hong, Kang So Ra, Park Yeong Gyu, Kim Sung Oh and Jeon Yeo Been deliver a pleasant laugh with fantastic chemistry even in the difficult situation of having to act in the masks of polar bears, lions, giraffes, gorillas and giant sloths, respectively.

 

Intimate Strangers (2018)

Friends meet for the first time in a long time and play a game of sharing the texts and calls they received that ultimately reveal each other’s secrets. Even though the story takes place in a limited space, fresh materials and unpredictable developments create a high immersion level, and the actors certainly show dazzling prowess. Yoo Hae Jin, Yum Jung Ah, Cho Jin Woong, Kim Ji Soo, Lee Seo Jin, Song Ha Yoon and Yoon Kyung Ho flawlessly become friends who start to feel more like strangers as they desperately try to hide their own untoward secrets. Lee Soon Jae, Ra Mi Ran, Jo Jung Suk and Jin Seon Kyu make special appearances as characters who cause embarrassing moments for the characters.

 

Parasite (2019)

It’s a tragicomedy in which families from two opposite ends of wealth distribution fall into unexpected situations when they are unintentionally bridged. The movie completes the portrait of modern people living in an era of polarization, showcasing the originality of every character, from the Kim family who are all either working low-paying temporary jobs or unemployed, and the wealthy Park family, to long-time housekeeper Moon Gwang who is driven to the edge and Geun Sae who has been secretly living in the basement. The chemistry between the actors who portray a story that spreads out of control is by far the best. Song Kang Ho, Choi Woo Shik, Park So Dam and Jang Hye Jin become a “real” family, while Cho Yeo Jeong and Lee Sun Kyun realistically portray the power couple that steps outside of the already existing dichotomous thinking. Lee Jung Eun and Park Myung Hoon, who bring about a shocking twist, also cast a heavy presence.

Actors Lee Jung-jae, Kim Soo-hyun as well as K-pop groups TWICE and BTS were honored at the 2020 Asia Artist Awards (AAA) ― the icing on the cake for their activities this year.

 

This year's ceremony was streamed online on MyMusicTaste, an online concert platform, Saturday night due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

 

Lee was named best actor in the film category for his role as ruthless villain Ray in hardboiled action film "Deliver Us from Evil."

 

"Thank you so much for this," Lee said after receiving the award. "It was fun to play such a unique character in Deliver Us from Evil. I received so much help from fellow actors and the film crew. I'd like to thank the audience for watching the film when it hit the theaters."

Kim Soo-hyun took home the best actor award in the TV series category for portraying Moon Gang-tae, a caregiver who buries his emotions to better care for his older brother, in "It's Okay Not to Be Okay."

 

"I would like to sincerely thank producer Park Shin-woo, writer Jo Yong and all the production staff. I am very thankful to Oh Jung-se, Seo Yea-ji and other fellow actors," the actor said.

 

"While filming 'It's Okay Not to Be Okay,' I was curious about how the characters with emotional wounds and backstories change over time. I truly enjoyed expressing the complex narrative arc of the character," Kim said.

TWICE won the Artist of the Year award for two straight years.

 

"Thank you for this honor. We feel humbled to receive this award for two consecutive years. A lot of people worked hard and cheered us on," TWICE's Nayeon said.

 

"Thanks to ONCE's (TWICE's fandom) continued love, we were able to receive such a big award again. We've been so far apart this year, but we could still feel your support."

 

BTS took home the Song of the Year award for "Dynamite" and Best of Best award, which was voted for by the public. Although the group couldn't be there in person to accept the award due to another engagement, BTS recorded a video for all the fans who voted for them.

 

"We're happy that Dynamite could give comfort and hope to listeners. Dear ARMY (BTS' fandom), you guys have been beyond wonderful all the years of our career. We haven't been able to see each other in concert, but we're able to sing and perform on stage with joy because of you."

 

Other big winners from the ceremony include NCT (Album of the Year), GOT7 (Performance of the Year), Monsta X (Stage of the Year) and Lim Young-woong (Trot of the Year). Hosted by Lee Teuk of Super Junior and Park Ju-hyun of Netflix original series "Extracurricular," the ceremony celebrated the best talents in the entertainment industry across 27 categories.

According to a media outlet, a total of 30 actors, including Park Seo Joon, Uhm Jung Hwa and Lee Jung Jae, will take part in 2020 MAMA as presenters.

 

Uhm Jung Hwa, who became the hottest topic this year in both the music and film industry with Refund Sisters and Okay! Madam, and Lee Jung Jae, who attracted 3 million moviegoers with his movie Deliver Us From Evil, have been chosen as award presenters. Park Seo Joon, who started the “Park Sae Roy craze” through Itaewon Class, will also be presenting an award.
